Board Of Directors

Ron ThomasHas previously held the position of Chairperson. Ron’s background is in advertising and marketing and he brings 30 years of experience to the Board of Directors. Ron has been awarded 2 PHF including Sapphire for his community work and is very active with the Rotary Club of Central Launceston where he has served as President and held many Board positions. He actively promotes the commercial activities of Self Help Workplace to the business community.

Erin SimsAfter a successful career with Archer Bushby, Erin set up her own company providing property transfer/conveyancing services. Erin holds an Arts/ Law (Honours) degree from the University of Tasmania. Self Help Workplace has benefitted from Erin’s commercial and legal expertise.

Peter BushbyHas been involved in Self Help Workplace for more than 25 years, including the role of Treasurer for 9 years and also in the capacity of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson. Peter is a Fellow of Certified Practicing Accountants, a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries, a Registered Company Auditor and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Peter’s financial experience is invaluable to Self Help Workplace.

Natalie SankeyJoined the Board in 2013. Currently employed as the Manager of the Launceston and North East offices of Australian Hearing, Natalie brings many years of experience in administration, customer and health services in a varied career in Tasmania and interstate to her role as a director.

Pablo AlmendrasPablo is one of the newest members of the Self Help Workplace Board and has recently taken on the role of Deputy Chairperson. Pablo’s background is in engineering. He holds an Engineering degree from the Victoria University and has worked for various consultancy companies in Sydney and Melbourne before relocating with his family to Tasmania in 2005.

David Galloway Recently joined the Board in June 2013, David comes from a timber background, working in a variety of roles including Despatch Manager, Customer Service Manager, Timber Retail Yard Manager and recently in IT. These roles have taken David to 10 years’ service. David the current “C” Grade State Champion in clay target shooting , enjoys fishing and the outdoors and is Vice President of the Scottsdale Crows Football Club.

Lin FarringtonComes with a strong background in special education, career guidance and vocational education.Currently working in Learning Services, North in a role as Learning Support Leader and previouslyas Co-ordinator of Studentworks, she developed strong collaborative partnerships with a range ofstakeholders, including students, parents, industry and government. Lin is committed to providing authentic learning experiences to disadvantaged youth.

Ken BassettKen rejoined the Board of Directors of Self Help Workplace in 2011. Ken is recently retired as Launceston Manager of Tasmanian Perpetual Trustees Limited. He has had more than 45 years experience in the financial services industry as a senior banking executive in bothTasmania and interstate, and more recently in the trustee services industry in Tasmania. Ken has a Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) and has been a Justice of Peace since1975. Other community interests include a directorship of Clifford Craig Medical ResearchTrust.

Margaret RidgersHas the honour of serving as the longest continuous director of Self Help Workplace having served in a range of capacities for more than 17 years. Margaret is the Principal of the Northern Support School which comprises St Georges and Newstead Heights Campuses. Margaret is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and is a Registered Psychologist and Teacher. She is the Tasmanian Representative on the Executive of the Australian Special Education Principals’ Association. Much of her work has involved supporting inclusive practices, and equal opportunities for young people with disabilities.

Shaun BleathmanIs the association’s Treasurer. Shaun is a partner in 145 Financial and has applied his accountancy and financial planning experience to the work of Self Help Workplace since joining the Board in 2007. Shaun is a member of CPA Australia and holds a Diploma in Financial Services and a Degree in Commerce.

Matthew GreenIs the Chairperson. Matthew has a strong background in the design and construction industry.He currently works as a project Co-Ordinator for Launceston based national firm Artas Architectswhere he has been employed for the last 12 years.

2012-2013 has been a year of rewards and challenges. The highlight was undoubtedly the celebration of Self Help Workplace’s 50th year. The 50th anniversary celebrations included the staging of an exhibition at the Academy Gallery at Inveresk, the publication of a commemorative book and a gala dinner.

The anniversary was an opportunity to take stock of where Self Help Workplace has been and where we are going. It was a year of significant changes. The changes were probably no bigger or smaller than that which has faced the organisation in the past, but the magnitude of the changes this year attracted much of the enterprise’s attention. In order to operate effectively and fulfil its mission to provide people with a disability with meaningful and productive employment, Self Help Workplace must work effectively in two very distinct areas. First, the enterprise must operate on a strong commercial footing, as two thirds of the enterprise’s income generated from our commercial activities. Like many businesses in the state, Self Help Workplace had to cope with the decline of retail trade, reform in the timber industry and tough times facing our customers and suppliers. Fortunately, Self Help Workplace has retained the support of many of our customers, particularly those who purchase our extensive range of timber products and utilise the services of our business services arm. We are grateful for the loyalty of our customers and the support of our suppliers.

Second, Self Help Workplace, as an Australian Disability Enterprise, has had to come to terms with the reforms introduced by the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Self Help Workplace, like all providers of specialist disability services in the state, spent a great deal of the year influencing the design and developing technical knowledge of the scheme and its implications for our existing and new employees. The scheme run by DisabilityCare Australia is a significant reform. It will change the way services are designed and provided to people with disability. Its promises to substantially improve the lives of people with disability so that they can enjoy live the lives they choose. Self Help Workplace, alongside the Australian community will bear responsibility for delivering on that promise.

In amongst all of these issues, the enterprise continued to grow. We made more products than ever before, including pallets, customised timber packaging, survey pegs and tree stakes. We assembled more products and mailed more material than ever before. We refreshed our corporate catering service and looked at new ways to market the enterprise.We also improved facilities and equipment. A major project completed at the beginning of 2013 was the repair and upgrade of the yard, truck loading bays and storage areas. The new drainage, asphalt and concrete that covers almost 2,200m2, has resulted in a more efficient and safe work area.

The achievements of the year are due to the contributions of many people. We acknowledge and thank the Board for their leadership and their unwavering commitment to the enterprise’s vision and to the staff and volunteers who worked hard each day to build the business and support our employees. We are particularly grateful to Peter Bushby who retired during the year after 25 years of leadership and service.

At the heart of our enterprise are our supported employees. Their enthusiasm for work was unwavering. Their smiling faces and energy continued to inspire all of us to do better. And as a team, we did. We grew the book club, which now includes numeracy training. We continued to run accredited training in transport and warehousing with a third group enrolling in a certificate I and a group completing certificate II.

Self Help Workplace is an optimistic enterprise. We believe that all people with a disability who want to work should be able to. We believe that the Tasmanian business community will continue to invest in a social enterprise such as Self Help Workplace because we deliver strong economic and social outcomes. We believe in the generosity of donors, supporters and sponsors who humble us each year with their generous financial support of our endeavours. We believe that Self Help Workplace will be around for at least another 50 years and we look forward to continuing to fulfil our mission to provide people with disabilities with meaningful and productive employment so they can enjoy independent and fulfilling lives.

Self Help Workplace bid farewell and good luck to one of our long serving employees, Kathleen Bayles who retired during the year.

Kathy worked at Self Help Workplace for 36 years and was a dedicated employee who loved coming to work and very rarely missed a day in all of those years. She enjoyed playing tenpin bowling with her work mates and being a member of the New Horizon Club. Kathy represented what our enterprise is all about and will be missed, but we are sure she will enjoy relaxing and taking things easy and after 36 years she deserves to.

This year the Business Services team has been busy undertaking mail outs, print finishing, rag cutting and product assembly, for which we are known. But during the year we also took on some very different jobs such as making up stubby holders out of possum fur and bagging chicken feed.

In Business Services we are always happy and willing to try to do any task that others may find a challenge.

This year we applied tape to 65,000 paper bags which end to end measured over 26 kilometres. During the year, we also printed 263,438 statements and invoices just for one customer.

Our rag cutters have also been busy with cutting over 3000 kilograms in rags.

We would like to thank all of our customers for your support during the year and look forward to continuing with providing our quality goods and services to your business.

Unfortunately the quantity and quality of donations seemed to be a lot less this year compared to previous years. This seems to stem from people tightening their belts with the cost of living going up. But still Encore will always strive to meet out customers needs by maintaining a clean shop with quality, fashionable and laundered clothing.

Thank you to our customers for their ongoing business and loyalty.

I would like to give a big thank you to the wonderful crew we have in Business Services who make it a pleasure to be a part of Self Help Workplace. My thanks also goes to Kim for her ongoing support and to our amazing volunteers Selena Hext and Linda Yardley for their dedication to helping Encore and Business Service be more efficient.

2012/13 has seen another year of steady growth for production with a large volume of work going out the doors. The increased workload has also seen the number of employees grow from 17 to 19 which is pleasing to see. An exciting development during the year has been the partnership formed with Neville Smith Forest Products. The result has been the installation of a parquetry docking machine. The team is excited to be producing parquetry flooring again as it had been something Self Help Workplace was doing 10-15 years ago. I think we will see this partnership being strengthened as we come up with other ways to work together for our mutual benefit. All the new equipment that was purchased last financial year has been working overtime. The new saws have cut a lot of studs and garden stakes and the new nail guns have fired 100s of thousands of nails. We also completed yard works earlier this year which was a huge project to manage considering the workload we had at the time. It was a real credit to everyone involved that we minimised the loss of production during the whole process considering at times we couldn’t access the yard or driveway. I want to thank everyone involved for their persistence and patience during the process.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all customers that have bought our products and services over that past 12 months and would like to extend a special thankyou to Bradken Resources, Freight Connections, Tasmanian Alkaloids, TPI Enterprises, ECKA Granules and NSFP. We are grateful for your continued support.Most certainly, the past 12 months has had some challenges for us and the much publicised difficulties in the timber industry this has seen sawmills close down. This has created challenges to source new suppliers and purchase timber at the right prices so that we could do the best thing for our customers. I can see some significant challenges ahead as the manufacturing and mining industries continue to slow down. We are going to have to be smart and diversify where we can within a changing economy.

I would personally like thank my 19 loyal and hardworking employees; Tom for stepping up when required and been a huge help; and Donna and Tracey for their guidance when required, and allowing me to make decisions over the past 12 months. Without all your efforts this place wouldn’t be the success it is today. I look forward to working through what will no doubt be a challenging and rewarding year ahead.

Self Help Workplace is, as always, proud to offer a unique work environment that allows employees to learn valuable life skills that will enhance their lives and promote independence through involvement in our Life Skills Program

The program was once again primarily funded by the Bruce Wall Foundation Trust during 2012-2013 and has continued to be a rewarding and educational experience for employees.

Highlights of the program this year:

• Another half a dozen employees completed the Launceston City Council’s on line food handling course ‘I’m Alert’;

• Employees cooked hundreds of lamingtons and sausage rolls to raise funds to support Self Help Workplace’s 50th anniversary celebrations;

• A number of new employees who have not participated in the life skills program before started their cooking experience in the kitchen and loved every minute of it

• Employees assisted with preparation on dozens of catering orders and the delivery of those orders to our loyal customers.

• Employees got to show off their cooking skills for a number of special events including presentation of a life membership award to Faith Layton and visit by Senator Jan McLucas and Geoff Lyons MP.

• 5 employees completed Certificate II in Transport & Warehousing and 6 more commenced the course due for completion by the end of 2013.

• Employees participating in the Book Club have continued to gain confidence in their reading as well as increasing their numeracy skills, with the latter being introduced into the Book Club program this year.

The success of the program however is best shown in the faces of our employees in the photographs.

The members of the workers committee for 2012 - 2013 were:

The workers committee members, as always, were very dedicated this year, with one member, Karmen Newton, even coming into the workplace on her day off to attend meetings. Each member took turns chairing the meetings and diligently followed the agenda which saw many issues raised and discussed including workplace behavior, breakfast club etiquette, lunchtime activities, upgrades to the toilet facilities, flu injections and site improvements.

2012 marked the 50th Anniversary of Self Help Workplace. The committee wanted to assist with fundraising for the gala dinner and decided to do a lamington and sausage roll drive. Thanks to their efforts, and the support of our loyal customers, a total of 618 lamingtons and 690 sausage rolls were sold and the committee raised an amazing $869.90!

Other causes that the committee chose to support through the year included:

Dale Kean commenced work with Self Help Workplace on 24th July, 1978 as a fresh faced 19 year old and quickly became a valuable member of the Self Help Workplace team.

Through the years, Dale’s tasks have varied immensely including working in the bottle recycling shed, building pallets, docking timber, driving the forklift, serving as a member of the Workers Committee and even putting his hand to cooking in the canteen. Some things have remained constant however and they are Dale’s friendly and caring nature and his strong work ethic.

A previous recipient of this award in 2006, Dale has won the award again because of his support of his work colleagues and his hard work.

Celebrating 50 remarkable years

In 1962, a group of parents and supporters came together in a small weatherboard cottage in Amy Road, Newstead, determined to create productive and meaningful employment for their children with disabilities. From these modest beginnings, Self Help Workplace has grown to be Launceston’s largest employer of people with disabilities with an annual turnover in excess of $1.3million. So when work started on the planning of our 50th birthday, we knew there was much to remember; much to celebrate; and much to look forward to.

One of Self Help Workplace’s strengths over 50 years has been the community’s involvement in and support of the enterprise. We decided that our 50th anniversary celebrations would be the same. Self Help Workplace was overwhelmed with offers from the community. Jenny Gill, a local writer, volunteered to research and write the commemorative book; students and teachers from the Department of Interactive Design & Media at the Polytechnic spent a day capturing images of the workplace; The University of Tasmania agreed to stage an exhibition at the Academy Gallery; and businesses and individuals from throughout the state donated items for the gala dinner and auction.

The photographic exhibition, commemorative book and gala dinner all provided a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the company of old and new friends and thank all those organisations and individuals who have helped Self Help Workplace over 50 fabulous years. Thank you to our friends, donors and supporters who made our 50th anniversary celebrations so memorable.

The Directors of Self Help Workshop Inc submit the Financial Statements for the period ending 30June 2013. The names of the Directors in office at the date of this report are: The principal activities of Self Help Workshop Inc. in the course of the period were the supported employment and training of people with a disability. During the period, there was no significant change in the nature of those activities.

The net amount of operating surplus for the period was $9,401. Self Help Workshop Inc. is exempt from income tax.

Matters or circumstances have not arisen since the end of the period that have significantly affected or may significantly affect the operation of Self Help Workshop Inc, the results of those operations, or the state of affairs of Self Help Workshop Inc, in financial years after the period 30 June 2013.

Artas Architects, of which M. Green is an employee received professional fees ($1000 exc GST) to design and prepare documentation for toilet refurbishments to Self Help Workplace. In the opinion of the Directors:

• The attached Statement of Financial Position is drawn up as to a give a true and fair view of the balance sheet.

• The attached Statement of Financial Performance is drawn up to give a true and fair view ofthe profit and loss.

• The attached Statement of Cash Flow is drawn up as to give a true and fair view of the cash flow.

Accounting Policies

Basis of AccountingThe financial statements are special purpose financial statements that have been formed on an accrual accounting basis and in accordance with applicable Australian accounting rules and in part with International Financial Reporting Standards.

Depreciation PolicyDepreciation of assets is calculated on the diminishing value method at rates calculated to write of the cost or re-valued amount of each asset during its effective useful life.

Bad & Doubtful DebtsSelf Help Workshop Inc. reviews all outstanding receivables and makes specific provisions where there exists a reasonable doubt as to whether the receivable will be recovered. All known bad debts are written off in the year they are recognised.

Taxation LiabilitiesSelf Help Workshop Inc. (ABN 46 307 410 837) trading as Self Help Workplace and Encore Clothing is a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) with Deductible Gift Recipient Status (DGR) and is endorsed to access the following taxation concessions:

• GST Concessions• Fringe Benefit Tax Exemption• Income Tax Exemption

Donations to Self Help Workshop Inc. over $2.00 are tax deductible.

Employee EntitlementsLiabilities for employee entitlements in respect of wages and salaries, annual leave and other current employee entitlements are accrued at nominal amounts calculated on the basis of current wage and salary rates.

1. Long Service Leave. The classification of the liability for long service leave has been completed on the basis that entitlements in respect of service greater than five years are shown as a current liability.

2. Sick Leave. The liability for sick leave is capped at $20,000 due to the probability that sick leave taken in the future will not be greater than entitlements that will accrue in the future.

3. Annual Leave. Annual leave is accrued at the rate that would be payable in the event that Self Help Workshop Inc. would be required to pay this entitlement in full to all employees.
