Self-Serving Talent For every modern PD-turned-fireman faced with two new fires for each one he puts out, there is a talent trying to improve despite the programmer’s increasing distractions. Even more are trying to get the edge for that next big job. Building on last month’s conversation with talent coaches Tommy Kramer and Steve Reynolds (CAW 10/29), Country Aircheck turns to KMNB/Minneapolis morning man Paul Koffy to identify some ways personalities can sharpen their own skillsets and maximize their visibility in an increasingly competitive job market. Self-airchecking is key. “The first thing you listen for is what you said that’s different than everybody else and the second is repetition,” says Kramer. “If you can’t tell a story that goes in a straight line without repeating yourself, you’re not a good storyteller. Every book goes through multiple rewrites and every movie goes through severe editing, but too many radio people think that they can open a mic with no further planning than the idea of ‘I’m going to talk about Christmas.’ You can’t waste people’s time and PPM proves it.” “I analyze whether or not I talked ‘to’ or talked ‘at’ after every break,” says Koffy. “It’s like that part in Howard Stern’s Private Parts when his wife says, ‘You know when you just stopped, and just started talking? Kids of The Baby Boom: KASE/Austin’s Steve Gary (c) is flanked by The Bellamy Brothers, Howard (l) and David, during a back stage meeting at the Austin Rodeo in 1988. Got memories? Send to [email protected].

P A G E T H R E E P I C The idea was hatched six years ago when Diamond, now a five-year WIL vet, was temporarily on the beach. “Kate and I started a vlog called Lipstick And Laundry,” Diamond says. The audience grew to about two million hits within a couple of years, because, as she reasons, “We were hitting a target of real moms. We’re not Jersey housewives with nannies and maids. We’re kind of edgy and say what we want.” Two years ago, a local production company showed interest, a seven-minute sizzle tape was shopped and Nick Jr. bought in. The show was green-lighted a year ago, coinciding with Diamond getting bumped from weekends and joining WIL’s top-ranked Cornbread Morning Show. That was great timing for Diamond, but as she explains, “I was worried because this isn’t something the station asked for. I told the producers, hey, you have to respect the radio show and if Cornbread doesn’t want you in studio, you have to leave.” But Diamond feels support from both the station and her radio partner. “WIL was open and excited about it. I never brought it up to Cornbread, but he started airing calls and promoting the show.” There were personal considerations, too. “I had to ask myself and so did Kate: do we want to have our kids involved? I told the kids if they didn’t want to be involved they didn’t have to.” All opted in. The personal and professional lives have intersected more than expected. “When testing the show, people liked watching behind-the-scenes of a radio station,” she says. Two upcoming episodes focus on Cornbread’s efforts for the Susan G. Koman walk for Breast Cancer, in which he recruits more than 7,000 team members. As Diamond points out, “The reality show and the radio show have the same target demographic.” As for her grueling, seven-day-a-week schedule, Diamond says it’s not so much a physical challenge. “Instead, it’s being ‘on’ constantly with no time to decompress from the moment your mike is turned on at 5am. Then they start taping at 11am and shoot until 8pm.” Luckily, she’s not the show’s only protagonist. “The network said it’s 25% Kate, 25% Judi and 50% the two of you.” Diamond says. “We’re in and out of each others lives

every day. And, you forget the cameras are there. I’m on a morning show so my life is an open book anyway.” And how does Diamond like watching that open book on TV, versus listening to it on the radio? “When my PD is playing an aircheck, I don’t mind listening because I get notes and I know the next time we’re on the air, we can change it,” she says. “But with the TV show, it’s already in the can; I can only watch it once and cringe, because I know there’s nothing I can do about it.” MFF airs Mondays at 9:30pm. – RJ Curtis

Kramer illustrates: “I had a newsman once read, ‘A three-alarm blaze has erupted in a three-story apartment building next to the SMU campus; a fire department spokesman says the blaze is expected to continue for several hours.’ Nobody talks like that! there, it’s still burning!’ Use real language. He turned into a great newsman once he was freed from what he thought the company wanted from him. Sharpened skills might bring a personality closer to their dream job, but rising above a crowded field of airchecks is also required. “We all know it’s a standard rule to try to capture me in the first 30 seconds and that’s still true,” says Reynolds. “Do it by not giving me bits of shtick, but by being real and relevant. If you are truthful and genuine with the audience, then I can expect you to be the same with me. Beyond that,

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Southern Ground’s Neda Tobin discusses her most influential artists, songs, albums and concerts:1. Neil Diamond/Cherry, Cherry: It was the first record I ever bought. Neil was a rocker and my inspiration to get into the music business ... for which I am grateful!2. Johnny Cougar’s Chestnut Street Incident: This was John Mellencamp’s first album that included covers of “Pretty Woman,” “Jailhouse Rock”, “Do You

Believe In Magic” and “Twentieth Century Fox.” I would literally play it for everyone who walked though my front door even if I had to strap them into a chair and make them listen! I was sucked in by the raspy voice way back then. But paired with his stellar songwriting, he has kept me a fan for life. 3. Def Leppard opening for Loverboy: I went to see Loverboy, who were on fire with “Working for the Weekend,” and was looking forward to checking out Def Leppard, who had a hit with “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak.” That was all it took ... I started dreaming about Joe Elliot and the next thing I know, landed my first label job hanging posters in record stores for Polygram Records. My boss at the time, the most wonderful LC Hensley, nicknamed me “Neda Leppard” because they were all I talked about.4. John Mellencamp’s Scarecrow Tour: My first regional promo gig was also at Polygram and this was one of my very first tours. Being a fan for several years and not ever having seen him live, I’ll never forget sitting in the audience in Clemson, SC with tears running down my face from an outpouring of emotion. To this day, it’s one of the most pure live performances I’ve ever seen.5. Lonestar/Amazed: I owe my passion for today’s Country music to this song. I first heard it while I was working at a Top 40 station in Dallas. They never front or back sold it so I called the PD who told me it was a country song and my first reaction was, “That’s country?!” Not only was I enamored with the romantic lyrics, but Richie McDonald’s vocal truly “amazed” me. So I started watching CMT to see who they were, and in the process discovered the likes of Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Keith Urban and Blake Shelton. It was then that I knew I had to be a part of this format. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Pink Floyd’s The Wall. I’m familiar with a song or two, but never listened to the entire album. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Please don’t throw things at me ... I’ve tried and tried, but just don’t get Coldplay.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Too many to mention. A sampling: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s Live Bullet, Def Leppard’s High ‘N’ Dry, Matchbox 20’s Yourself Or Someone Like You, Zac Brown Band’s The Foundation.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Cricket On A Line” by Colt Ford.

I’m looking for people who own a perspective, are comfortable enough with themselves to share it and have fun with it, are accessible, real, and that stand

out. We have so few positions now that I always encourage hiring good people; the ones who are going to put the group ahead of the individual, will work tirelessly and won’t undermine the greater goal of the manager or the station.” Koffy agrees. “Remember that being a good air talent also means being a good employee,” he says. “Radio is still a business and I’m not an independent

entertainer who’s contracting out my show. The job of radio station talent is to reinforce the brand and you have to remember that.” Improvement may not come easy and it arguably comes faster when there’s an objective voice to help jocks get there. But when the fireman’s busy fighting fires, Kramer, Reynolds and Koffy encourage

OFF THE RECORD : K R I S T Y L E E C O O K Broken Bow’s Kristy Lee Cook puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KRWQ/Medford, OR. Love them because they've always believed in me and continue to support me to this day.The first time I heard myself on the radio I honestly can't remember who I was with, where I was, or even when it was because it was during the whirlwind

of my first radio tour. It wasn't until I got home a few months later and heard it on my local station that it really sunk in. As for my current single "Airborne Ranger Infantry," I haven't heard it while randomly driving down the road yet, so I look forward to that moment of "that's me!"There’s no place like home, but if I had to be stuck somewhere it would be Wyoming. I love being in the middle of nowhere and the countryside, so probably Jackson Hole. Or maybe somewhere in New Zealand. If I don’t have my stuffed animal when I travel, I go insane. I know, I’m pretty lame because I still sleep with a stuffed animal, but I love it. They’re cozy and mine makes me so happy. My most interesting road companion would have to be Broken Bow VP/Promotion, Lee Adams. She’s the coolest, has supported me through some rough times and really cares about me as a person. I’ve truly enjoyed becoming friends with her through our travels. My latest Skymall wish was a dog bed to spoil my mastiffs.I can’t walk out of a truck stop without a bottle of water. I drink water like its going to be gone tomorrow and it sucks because I end up needing a bathroom break every 20 miles. If I saw Garth Brooks in the airport, I’d definitely say hello and, “Hey, I hear you’re having a tour in 2014 ... need an opening act?”The best advice I ever got was make sure you stay grounded and remember that you are where you are because God allowed it. Stay humble and have faith! My mom and my sister Terina both said that to me, and I’ll always cherish it.
