EVENTPROGRAM
SIR ZELMAN COWENSCHOOL OF MUSIC

WELCOMEIt gives me great pleasure to introduce the program of events for semester 1, 2020 at theSir Zelman School of Music at Monash University. This is version 2 of this program. Theimpact of COVID 19 hit the Monash community in our week 2, they day face to faceteaching commenced, as our first Artist in Residence was coming to campus from theairport. In our week 3, we shifted all delviery online, and whilst our ensemble units, lunchtime concerts and research seminars went into pause, we were able to continue ourengagements with visiting artists, ensembles and artists in residence. We changed ourapproach to ensure Australian artists would be supported by offering a series ofcommissions to create online Australian content for our students. It was important to usthat students would be able to continue thier music studies during these difficult times, and we have remained determined to ensure quality of that experience.
We also worked to retain the key parts of studying music at Monash - the experience ofmeeting, performing with and listening to key artists in the field - from Australia andaround the world. Mid semester, we returned to running our Lunchtime Concerts andResearch Seminars online, and are planning our Online Day of Play. The benefits of thesefreely available online presentations are passed on to our broader community, seeingmore engagement than our in person events previously. Our talented staff work withstudents, and students with each other, to produce an exciting and diverse range ofopportunities online for us all to engage with some of the most exciting repertoire around;across jazz, improvisation, classical, pop, indigenous, world, electronic, interactive andexploratory musics. From gamelan to a string quartet, established artists to emerging composers, choirs tojazz trios, pop bands to a laptop ensembles, big band or orchestra; it's hard to imaginethe range of experiences awaiting us all in this fantastic collection of opportunities. Thisprogram represents what the school stands for: championing music made in Australia, thefeaturing of a diverse range of composers, performers and styles, the pursuit ofexcellence and innovation. I hope to see you at one of our events soon. Professor Cat HopeHead of School

In 2020 the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music commissioned 10 presentations,
workshops and/or performances focusing on elements of Australian music practice for
2020 in a quest to support our local arts community during the COVID 19 pandemic and
its impacts, while simultaneously enriching our students' online learning experience.
The commission offered 10 x $1000 bursaries to the Australian music community to
create online materials for our students that we can deliver in 2020. These could be from
performers or composers across classical, pop, jazz and improvisation, as well as
producers, audio engineers, software programmers and freelance academics. The
selection panel was made up of convenors from the different streams in the school, and
the alignment of the material to the school’s vision was key in our decision making. This
included our focus on music in Australia, opportunities for Indigenous artists, gender
equity as stated in our Keychange Pledge, as well as innovation and collaboration.
