On Tuesday, May 21st, Lena-Winslow hosted a Stem day in the junior high gym.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students

from fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades got the chance to work togeth-

er in certain activities that were based upon the events of the book The Detective’s

Assistant. The book is about a detective group focused on stopping the assassina-

tion attempts targeting the president elect at the time, Abraham Lincoln. Eighth

grader Drew Streckwald said, “I feel that the activities were fun and engaging, and

it was fun to work with people I have never really worked with before, such as

fourth, fifth, and sixth graders.” Every group was separated with one student from

each grade. Although it may have been scary for the younger students, everything

went smoothly. Some students even got copies of The Detective’s Assistant. Au-

thor Kate Hannigan even appeared to explain why she wrote the book and an-

swered questions from students. We owe a big thanks to NIU, Mrs. Gallagher, and

Mrs. Daughenbaugh for setting up the event.

In the month of February, student leadership put on a Valentine’s Day dance. There

were many enjoyable activities to do at the dance. There were games, a raffel, and a

photo area with a backdrop and photo props. While the D.J. played various types of

music, from current hits to 90s music, everyone danced on the dance floor. The

overall feedback from the dance was very good and student leadership hopes to do

more dances in the future. Money was raised from the dance from admission fees

and concession stands. Some of the money went to paying for the D.J., while some

of it went to Bob Stewart, a nearby firefighter, to help pay for some of his medical

bills. The students had a great time and the donation made to Bob Stewart put a

smile on his face. Overall the 2019 Le-Win Valentine’s Day dance was a success.

On Monday, May 27th, the Lena-Winslow Junior High Marching Band will be marching in the

Lena Memorial Day Parade. The band members will be performing “Battle Hymn of the Repub-

lic” and “The Star Spangled Banner”. The students will be wearing black dress pants, natural col-

ored tennis shoes and, and a school issued polo. The Lena parade starts at 10 am, and will feature

the marching band. Then at 1:30 pm, the eighth grade and high school will be marching in the

Winslow Memorial Day Parade. The dress code will be essentially the same, featuring the same

polos and dress pants. The band will be playing the marching song “American Patrol” and “The

Star Spangled Banner”. The parade is expected to be a big success, given the marching band has

been practicing relentlessly these last few weeks. Be sure to be there to support our Veterans!

Another fundraising event student leadership did in the month of February was sell cans of Crush.

Students could buy a can of Crush soda for $1 and send it to someone anonymously or with identi-

fication. But there was more to it than just that. Each color/flavor of Crush stood for a different

thing. For example, the red crush would get sent to someone’s crush and the orange flavored crush

would get sent to one of your friends. Student leadership was able to raise plenty of money from

this that was later donated to Bob Stewart.

On May 20th, the 2018-2019 student leaders who met the year’s re-

quirements were rewarded with a fascinating trip to iFLY. Their day

began with a drive to Chicago, which is where the indoor skydiving

facility is located. It was there where they were given a STEM presen-

tation, and learned several tings about indoor skydiving. They got to

work together to hypothesis how certain objects would react in the

chamber, and discovered that factors such as frontal area and weight

determine much of this. Each person was instructed on what to do once

in the chamber, and they were even taught hand signals to use while

they were skydiving so they could communicate with their instructor.

Overall, it was an amazing experience for everyone and very exciting.

On Friday, May 24, the Lena-Winslow Junior High Annual Pinball Battleball

Tournament will take place. Pinball battleball is a game that is found just at Lena.

The game is set up with two teams, each team having four pins on their side. The

objective of the game is to knock out all enemy players or pins with foam balls.

The game not only requires a high amount of physical skill, but mental skill as

well. Several high-tear teams have been beaten by less glorious teams due to

strategy. There are several good strategies to winning a game of pinball battle-

ball. The one most commonly used among all teams is being highly offensive

then quickly dropping back to guard the pins. This gives the enemy team little

time to adjust, and therefore making them vulnerable. This strategy is effective

but if countered by a different well thought-out strategy, it would quickly crum-

ble. My personal team, the Off-Brand Tryhards will be using a certain playstyle

where every player has a different job based on their physical skills and attrib-

utes. This will ensure maximum success in each category of the game, with some

players being aggressive and others protective. The tournament will take place in

the gym on Friday and will feature an action-packed array of teams and tension-

filled games keeping you on the edge of your seat until the time is up. Be sure to

be there and cheer someone on!

Daely Kluck is our January Student of the Month! Daely is hard working

and always has a smile on her face. Daely describes herself as, “Someone

who is themselves around anyone, and can talk about almost anything

with anyone.” She says, “I don’t like drama and I let people think what

they want about me because I know what’s true and they don’t.” Daely

has two older sisters that she loves very much. Daely wants people in

school to think of her as someone they can talk to and always be comfort-

able around. Daely’s birthday is April 15th, and her favorite food is Spa-

ghetti. In school Daely’s favorite class is Social Studies. She says, “it is

because of the teacher.” After school Daely rides the bus home, does

homework, then she hangs out with friends and watches T.V. Her favorite

color is purple and her favorite animal is the koala. A rule that Daely lives

by is, “Even when things get really dark, there is always light! It may take

a while to find, but it is still there!” Daely is a role model in the school

and is always smiling!

two cats. In her free time, she enjoys napping, shopping, or hanging out

with her friends. Livia’s favorite food is asparagus. Livia is always kind to

other classmates, she always tries her hardest inside and outside of school,

and she is an overall excellent student. In the future, she hopes to graduate

from Georgetown University and later pursue a career as a lawyer. She is

currently 14 years of age, and she was born on August 6th, 2004. Her big-

gest fear is spiders. Her favorite subject to learn about is social studies,

Why student leadership?

Student Leadership is important to me because I would like to

give back to the community for all it has done for me. I also feel like a

better person when I help the people around the community.

How I can make the school have a better environment

One way the school can have a better environment is rewarding all the amazing kids

at Lena-Winslow Junior High is by having an Accelerated Reader (A.R.) goal. An example of

a goal would be for all of the students to earn 10,000 A.R. points. If we reach that goal we

would get a pizza party or an electronic day. Then we could have a battle between the grades

or the class to see who get the most A.R points. Whichever grade wins, could get an award.

The contest will encourage kids to read more. That will improve their reading skills. Then

that makes school easier. The outcome will make school more enjoyable or have a better en-

vironment.

Ideas for 2018-19

Wouldn't it be amazing if the world could get along better? One way to help people

get along is to teach them teamwork. Team building skills are a great way to figure out how

to get along with each other. You could do relay races, a human knot, or a scavenger hunt as

team building activities.

Past community service

I have led the following community service events. There was a family in the community

whose son was traveling to get a surgery. My friends and I had a lemonade stand and donated

all the money to that family. For my 8th birthday party, instead of receiving presents, I had

my friends bring canned goods for a food drive and donated them to the local food pan-

try. Another thing I did that year was had my family buy shoes and I donated all those shoes

to the elementary school. This summer I helped with landscaping that was done at the high

school.

I really hope you consider me as a student leader so I can become a better person.

P A G E 2 1

Why I want to be on the Student Leadership Committee

I want to be on the Student Leadership Committee because, I want to

make a difference in the school and community. I will do this by being

kind, positive and showing courage to share my ideas and thoughts and

listening to others ideas. I also want to build and improve on my leadership skills.

I have had the following opportunities to serve in the community:

-Delivered flowers to the Lena Living Center and Assisted Living Apartments for Love Your

Neighbor Week

-Walked door to door for Andrew Chesney campaign

-Walked in parades last fall and this summer for the Andrew Chesney campaign

-Served as a Student Leader for KidzLink at Crossroads Community Church

-Helped create food baskets at Christmas for the Lena Lions Operation Good-

fellows

These opportunities to serve have helped me to learn new things, have joy in serving and see

the happiness from the people I helped.

I have many ideas to make the school a more positive place. I will talk to people to

find out what they are having trouble with and help them to figure it out, this will help lessen

the drama. I will include all people in events and activities. I will be open minded to other

people’s ideas and thoughts.

I have many ideas for the upcoming school year, I would like to the see the creation of:

-An Art Club

-A Tech/Robotics Club

-Book Club

My name is Rachael Setterstrom and I am a sixth grader at Lena

Winslow Junior High School. I would like to be considered to become a

member on this years Student Leadership Committee. I want to have a

positive impact on my school, community, and classmates. I think I have

the qualities of a good student leader.

Here are some ideas on how I think I can make the school a more positive environment. I can

make the school a more positive environment by having a positive attitude towards my class-

mates and teachers. I could sit with someone who is eating alone at lunch, or someone who is

having a bad day. I could also pick up garbage and help take care of our school.

I have several ideas for student leadership projects in the upcoming 2018-2019 school year.

One project would be going to the nursing home and visiting the residents. Another idea is

raising money and collecting old towels and blankets for for the local pet shelters. My last

idea that I have is to collect Christmas presents from the students to donate to a local family

in need during Christmas.

I have enjoyed opportunities to help others in the past. I have watered my neighbor’s flowers

when he was gone during the summer. I have volunteered at my church for the yearly ham

supper. I participated in Wee Deliver for three years when I was in the elementary school. I

also volunteer as one of the Lena Winslow Panther’s football team water girls.

Over the years I have earned some achievements. I have gotten straight A’s in third,

fourth, and fifth grade. I also got the Presidential Award when I was in fifth grade. I was also

on Mr. Milder’s Caught Being Good poster in elementary school each year.

I hope I have shown you how I could be a good Student Leader. Thank you for your time

and consideration.

Sincerely, Rachael Setterstrom

I think I should be in Student Leadership for many reasons. I think the

ideas I have, added with ideas other people have, will greatly improve the

school and it’s students. My experience in the past will help me in the future.

Making the school a better place to learn and have fun is one of my goals I

hope to achieve.

These ideas as well as other students’ ideas will make the school a

place that kids look forward to going to not someplace they are forced to go.

One of my ideas is to make signs or posters to hang up in the library or around the school. Maybe this

would give more things for the students to look at and make their day a little more bright and colorful.

My second idea is to celebrate student Birthdays by having the Student Leadership members decorate

the inside of the birthday girl/boy’s locker. I think this is a good idea so that they feel special and hap-

py that someone remembered their birthday and made a point in saying so. One idea is we participate

in Socktober. Socktober is when you donate socks to give to a homeless shelter this is a good idea be-

cause most homeless shelters don’t have enough socks. Not only will these ideas improve our

school but areas around us.

We can take these ideas forward by communicating with people who can help us.

We can ask the art class or we can make the posters ourselves. We can ask Ms. Voreis if she could

have the art students make posters for the school, I think this would help the student feel more in-

volved in improving their school. The steps we'd have to take to decorating kids lockers would be;

asking for permission from Mr. Lobdell, student's birthday and locker number. Lastly we would have

to buy the supplies and decorate their locker and wait for them to come. For Socktober we would have

to ask Mr. Lobdell if he could mention something about donating socks on the announcements. After

we reach our goal of socks we can find the nearest homeless shelter and donate the socks there. By

taking forward these ideas we are not only just saying we are going to do it but we are taking it to an-

other level and making our ideas happen.

There are many I am doing or that I have done that will make me a great candidate. I have been in Girl

Scouts since I was in kindergarten. Girls Scouts is all about making the world a better place and a

more positive place to live in for ourselves and for the people in the future. Last year I made a tie

blanket in Girl Scouts for Project Linus. Project Linus is when you make a tie blanket and you donate

it to cancer patients at hospitals and to make their day a little less gloomy and full of happiness and

warmth. All throughout my years in school I have been a straight A student. I have never had a B or

anything worse than that on my report card. Last year I made a Poster against bullying with the other

Girl Scouts. We made these posters to make our town and school a more positive environment . These

things not only helped me be a better person but helped people in the community and people who just

needed a little more happiness in their life.

I think that Student Leadership would help me become a better person, by helping the community and

people in need. My ideas can help others if our goals are achieved. Our ideas can improve the commu-

nity and make it a more positive place to live in. I think my achievements in the past are paving the

way for the future. Now that you have heard all of the positive changes I will work hard to accom-

plish, I hope you consider me Student Leader worthy.

Sincerely,

Mya Ortiz

My name is Max Krzeminski and I would like to join Student Leader-

ship. I have always been told I am a good leader and I plan on continuing

that. I also like to help others. Seeing others in need then helping them is

a good feeling. I have done many jobs volunteering for my campground

and for my soccer club.

Every year on 4th of July weekend at my Campground I volunteer with the pancake break-

fast and other things happening on that busy weekend. It always is good to help out places

you love and visit regularly. We do fun activities such as a ball race, a patriotic golf cart pa-

rade, and we also do a live performance where I helped in the concession stand.

I have also helped clear the roads within a mile of our house. We cleaned for about 5 hours

and we ended up clearing about 7 bags of trash. Half of the trash was beer cans. The other

half was random garbage including a legless chair. I want to continue picking up trash and

making sure people know it is illegal to litter.

I think I would be a good student leader because I know how to be helpful to a big group of

kids. I always know when to let everyone contribute to a big project or discussion. I also

know when to help people if they have made a mistake instead of making fun of them for it. I

think all of these skills will also help me work well with all the other student leaders. So the

school would have an overall better positivity level.

I think a good idea would have to be to have more activities around the year. But to also

make sure there are days for the sportier people and for people who are not into sports. One

idea is a junior high field day. The elementary school field day is always a big success!

Bringing it back for the junior highers and updating some of the games and events would be

really fun!

-Max Krzeminski

Serving others is an important responsibility. One way that I can

help make our school and community a better place is by volunteering

and helping my school, community and others in any way that I can. I

have learned that many events and activities would not be possible if it

weren’t for the volunteers who put in their time and effort for others.

I want to be in Student Leadership so that I can help make our school a

great place for all of the students. I have experience volunteering and helping others. In June

I volunteered at St. Joseph’s Church in Lena and helped prepare for the Strawberry Social. I

worked at the church for three days helping to make the pies and other foods that were served

at the Social. I also worked at the event helping elderly guests carry their meals to tables and I

also helped bus the tables. Last school year I helped run concession stands at Junior High

events. I also have picked up trash along roads in our area. Last school year I spent two days

a week helping the elementary teachers and students. I was also involved in making and

serving breakfast for all of the teachers in our district.

I always try to be a positive leader and good role model during class, outside of school, and

while I am participating in sporting events. I encourage my classmates and teammates to be

positive and kind. I will be a person who stands up for those being bullied or treated badly by

others. I am not afraid to speak up for what is right and fair. I will give my time to help out in

any possible way and want to do all I can to help make Lena-Winslow Junior High the best

place it can be.

Some ideas I have for the upcoming school year are: collecting clothes and necessities for

families in need, selecting children to purchase Christmas gifts for who might not get a gift

otherwise, helping and spending time with patients at the nursing home, having Penny Wars

in order to raise money for different organizations, providing babysitting services for young

children to attend while their parents are attending Parent Teacher Conferences in the Junior

High, picking up trash around our school and town, having a Battle of the Grades by collect-

ing canned goods to donate to the Soup Kitchen, and providing breakfast to the staff once

each quarter as a way to thank them for their work.

Thank you for considering me for Student Leadership. You can count on me to be a positive

student leader.

P A G E 2 6

I believe that I would be a positive addition to Student Leader-

ship. Some of my accomplishments that I think should be considered

when selecting to be a Student Leader are earning top science student,

accomplishing top math student (along with one other person), receiving

straight A’s for at least the last three years. I keep up with all of my work

and participate in sports, fine arts, and church activities. I was also select-

ed as Student of the Month last year.

Because I have proven myself to be responsible and worthy during my 6th grade year I feel

that I would make a good Student Leader. If I get into Student Leadership I will watch out for

all students. If I become a Student Leader I will try to make the school a better place. I think

that I have very strong leadership qualities and that I would make a great Student Leader be-

cause I am comfortable standing up to my peers.

I believe that Student Leaders should not get treated differently than any other students.

I know that last year some of my friends would talk about how fun of an experience and how

much fun they had. I think Student Leaders should be people that are good role models and

are good representatives inside and outside of the school. Student Leaders should be friends

with everyone and I think that if I get on Student Leadership I will try my best to be friends

with everyone and make them feel like they have friends.

In my opinion Student Leaders should be at as many school functions as possible. Since my

mom is a teacher and a coach I am at school at 7:00 a.m. most mornings, so that will make it

possible for me to help with things like candy grams, donuts, and anything that would require

a Student Leader to be at school early in the morning. Since my mom is also a coach, I go to a

lot of volleyball games and tournaments and usually help with the concessions during home

tournaments. I also run concessions and ticket taking during summer league most weeks.

I believe that I would be a positive addition to Student Leadership and should be considered

as a new member to Student Leadership. I believe that I have very high leadership qualities

and very good grades. I believe that with all of my accomplishments, I should definitely be

considered as a new Student Leader.

Hello, my name is Jake Zeal. I’m in 8th grade at Lena-Winslow

Jr. High School, and am once again applying for student leadership. I

believe that I will be able to uphold all of the responsibilities included.

Last year I was able to keep my grades up, which was my num-

ber one priority. I was also able to manage my time. For example, even

when student leadership takes place during guided studies, I never had a late assignment in

any of my classes in 7th grade.

I am good with kids, and I am never afraid to be involved. I am very involved in my

church, by acolyting and working the video equipment for people that are not able to get to

church (too sick or elderly). I possess leadership skills that are needed. I am responsible, hard

working, honest, and trustworthy. There is a lot of work that I will have to do in student lead-

ership, and I believe that I can do it all.

This year, I think that we should do a dance. Every year, we have to choose between a movie

and a dance. I feel like every school should have a dance, and when the school choses a mov-

ie there are others that think that we should do a dance, and it isn't fair for them. I think we

should do more activities to boost pride in our school. We can also use this as a fundraiser,

like bring a dollar, and wear a hat.

I will try to get more people to attend sporting events. We can do something like a whiteout,

or a blackout, and make our own student section like the high schoolers do for home sporting

events.

I hope that you will pick me to be a student leader. I know I will work hard, and I have en-

joyed the past two years as part of student leadership. I look forward to continuing the good

work that student leadership does.

P A G E 2 8

My name is Madison Young, and I would like to be a part of

student leadership. I was on student leadership last year, and it was an amazing

experience. I feel that I am hard working, reliable, kind, helpful towards other

students, always able to maintain good grades, and a leader. I always try my

hardest when it pertains to school, sports, and other activities. I believe that

these are characteristics that all student leaders should have. Some of my big-

gest successes and achievements are through school, 4-H, and other extracurric-

ular activities such as volleyball, softball, and just volunteering. I have received

multiple Perfect Attendance awards through 4-H and school. In fact, I haven’t missed a day of school

since the fourth grade, therefore I believe that people can rely on me. Other awards I have obtained

through the years include the Presidential award and the Science award. And last year I received the

Citizenship award and student of the month. All of these award require a huge amount of work and

dedication.

I do many volunteer activities through school, 4-H, and my church. I thoroughly enjoy help-

ing out in the community and working with young children. Some examples of things I volunteer for

are working at children’s church on some select Sundays, helping at vacation bible school, help pre-

pare the food for the Strawberry Social, helping at My Friends Closet, and going down to the elemen-

tary to help with the kindergarteners. At the Lena Living center, I have brought in some of my show

animals for 4-H, made valentines day cards for the residents, and went Christmas caroling throughout

the whole building. Through school I have volunteered to work the concession stand at basketball

games and help with some events at track meets.

During school, I feel I always have a positive attitude which creates a more positive environ-

ment. A positive environment is very important, being that children spend most of their time there. I

am always there to cheer someone up when they are having a bad day. I get along with all my peers

and teachers. Although I am surrounded by lots of positive people that have a great effect on me, I still

see a lot of bullying throughout the school. One idea that I have for the upcoming school year is to see

more done to help prevent bullying. We could make posters to hang around the school. These posters

can cover the things you should do if you see someone being bullied and some could list positive

things that remind the victims that they do matter. I highly believe that everyone matters and people

should treat others how they want to be treated.

My second idea I have for the upcoming school year is having more fundraising events. For

example, having each student leader bring in some sort of bake good and they could be sold at a vol-

leyball or basketball tournament. Baked goods can be inexpensive, simple to make, and we could

make a lot of money off of it. The proceeds we make could then be donated to select charities.

These are just some of the reasons why I believe I would make a great candidate to be on the

student leadership team. Thank you for reading and considering my essay.

Sincerely,

Madison Young

Hello, my name is Kanzas Renee White and I would be interested in applying

for one of the positions as a Student Leader. The opportunity to become a helping part

of the Student Leadership Committee interests me because I am very fascinated with

all of the positive things that this group accomplishes. My high grades, positive behav-

ior, and relevant two years of past experience as a Student Leader has educated me of

the high level of expectation and responsibility that this group is seeking. I feel that if I

was given the opportunity, I could help out in a very positive way that would reflect

well on not only the school, but also the community. My beliefs are that everything this

group does is very helpful and memorable. The difference and positive change that Student Leaders have made

is such an amazing thing, I would be more than honored to hold a spot on the committee. School is the place where all kids, young teens, and even some adults spend a large amount of their

time. Therefore, it should be a very positive environment. It wouldn’t be good to have students in a negative

environment, because the type of environment you are in hugely impacts you and your actions. There is even the

theory that students with a more positive attitude tend to receive higher grades. To ensure that the school main-

tains positivity, I would recommend that we make posters with positive messages on them and place them

around the school. Also, we could create a system where whenever someone does something good that stands

out, the witness or person who was affected writes the situation or deed on a notecard left with the name of who-

ever did the positive thing. Whoever wrote what they had experienced or saw could then either leave their name

or remain anonymous. The slip of paper could then be placed in a box that would remain in the office, or in any

other relevant place. To make sure that all the notes were positive and genuine someone responsible could read

through them, and if there was an excessive amount, they could possibly even be sorted by how big the deed

was. Eventually, there could be a drawing, and whoever’s name was drawn who had done the positive deed

would receive a prize. If they had been sorted, there could be a larger and smaller prize for seperate drawings.

This idea would encourage students to do positive things throughout their day at school. Looking into the upcoming school year, I would love to see creative and effective fundraisers. An idea

that I would like to propose would be to do a T-shirt fundraiser. We could create inexpensive shirts, then sell

them for slightly more than we had purchased them for. If there was concern that we would have too many lefto-

ver shirts, then we could create order forms instead of ordering several shirts beforehand. The shirts could be

based on whatever we are raising money for, and if there were enough people willing to participate then we

could possibly involve the elementary and high school as well. If the elementary and high school were going to

participate, we could create different shirts for them that would go to a different cause. So in the end, this idea

could potentially raise money for three different needs all at one

time. I have volunteered to help out the community several different times. A few years ago, I had volun-

teered at St. John’s Church to help create pregnancy care packages for moms who were in need of basic necessi-

ties for their newborn babies. Just the volunteer work brought many kids together from the community, and it

was an overall great experience that was fun and enjoyable for everyone. Because I have been in Student Lead-

ership the past two years, I have also volunteered to work concessions on many different occasions, which

teaches great responsibility. Also, I have volunteered to clean trash along the ditches, and worked shifts at the

thrift store. All of these things have helped me become prepared for the upcoming expectations. Sincerely, Kanzas White

P A G E 3 0

Hi, my name is Owen Gilbertson, and im in eighth grade. Last

year I had the pleasure of being in Student Leadership, whether it was

helping out the pre-schoolers or helping others with homework. I would

love the opportunity to help out some of the younger ones again, that was

an experience I will never forget.

This year I have done many things to help out, even if it was just

mowing the lawn for my dad. The thing I was most excited for, was umping because I just

love sports so much. Other things that I did were things like helping out at Shepherd’s Table,

which is at Shepherd of the Hills church in Schapville, IL, and we serve food to others. Last

year during lunch when it looked like someone was having a bad day, I would buy ala carte

for them. A few times during our football season last year, I would go to help with conces-

sions right after practice. Last year, any time I didn’t have homework, I would willingly go

down to help with the preschoolers during Student Leadership.

If I am picked to be a Student Leader this year, I would do many things to try to help

the school. The main thing I would be focused on would be helping with more school events.

I think if we have them more often everyone could brainstorm for different ideas.

I would also like it if everybody had a say in more things, because there can be a big-

ger opinion outside of Student Leadership. An example of that would be if there were 15 out

of the 27 students in Student Leadership liked comedy movies over horror movies, while out-

side of Student Leadership 130 out of 200 liked horror over comedy.

My favorite thing to do as a Student Leader last year was showing the upcoming 6th

graders the Junior High. That was my favorite because I got to see how they felt in compari-

son to how I felt. For them, it didn’t seem like they were as worried as I was about getting to

each class on time, but there were a few. I told them that they would be fine as long as they

didn’t mess around in the halls.

Thank you for considering me for Student Leadership this year, and I would really

appreciate the opportunity of helping out the community and the school. Thanks for reading

about my goals for this year’s Student Leadership.

Sincerely,

Owen Gilbertson

P A G E 3 1

I, Rowen Schulz, believe I can be an excellent student leader. I’ve been in-

volved in student leadership for the past two years. As a student leader, I’ve been help-

ing teachers at the elementary, working concessions at numerous amounts of games

during the volleyball and basketball seasons, teaching the elementary students how to

be nice, caring, and helpful instead of being a bully, cleaned the sides of the roads, and

helped hang, price, and throw away clothes at the thrift store.

In my opinion, student leaders should provide many excellent traits, such as

being responsible, dependable, compassionate, generous, courteous, and intelligent. A student leader must pro-

vide assistance when asked, be willing to work hard and work voluntarily, be a great friend to the people around

him/her, work well in groups, and represent Lena-Winslow with a positive manner. I believe I have accom-

plished this over the past two years as a student leader, and will continue to do so in the future. I also believe

that I acquire most of the traits that student leaders need. I am responsible and dependable because I watch my

siblings by myself most nights while my sister has sports, or my parents work late. I am intelligent, as I have

achieved straight A’s over the course of the last three school years. I am generous, compassionate, and provide

assistance when my friends call me or text me to ask questions about the latest homework assignment and I an-

swer them. I’ve swept at the elementary for the past four years after lunch, and that shows that I’m willing to

work hard and voluntarily. Because of all of this, I am certain that I possess all of the traits needed to be an ex-

cellent student leader.

A big part of what our student leadership program stands for is helping the community. In the past, we

have cleaned the sides of the road and worked voluntarily at the thrift store. I believe we need to do this more

often instead of just one day every year, maybe once or twice every month. To make sure we aren’t missing sig-

nificant school time, we could clean the roads early in the morning before school, or after school and after extra-

curricular activities. In the past we’ve also donated to Gigi’s playhouse, whether we did a coat drive and donated

the clothes people brought in, or if we donated the money we earned. This is something we need to continue to

do for the community. Other than these, I have some other ideas that will help the community and our school.

For our community, we could have an unwanted toy drive. Whatever toys people bring in will be donated to

Gigi’s playhouse. It could just be a random event, or it could be one of the games in battle of the grades. Anoth-

er idea I have for the community is to have a school party/movie night, but, to get in, you have to bring one item

per person to donate, whether it’s a toy, food, or clothes. Not only would this help the community, but it would

also help the school. At the party/movie, kids would become closer and friendlier towards each other. An idea I

have for our school is to have parties, movie nights, and open gym nights throughout the school year. When stu-

dents attend and participate in these events, they bond and get closer to one another. When students are close

and bond well they become happy. And when students become happy, they learn better, because they are more

attentive to what the teacher is saying. These are just a few ideas I have for the school and community to be-

come a better place.

Thank you for taking the time to read my application for student leadership. I await your decision and

am excited to get back with my student leadership team to make the community, and school, a better place.

Sincerely,

Rowen Schulz
