Dear Parents, Next Wednesday, 29 October we will celebrate the elite performances of our academic, cultural, sporting and civic achievers in our school at our 56th annual Speech Night. It is never easy for our students to make it to this most prestigious night on the school calendar. Education at Wavell is founded on the four pillars of endeavour; academic, cultural, sporting and civics. There are so many outstanding achievers at Wavell across these areas. I congratulate all of those students who will be honoured this year and urge other students to continue to aspire to great heights in their area of strength. I will also have the privilege of presenting our 2015 Prefect-elects and naming our four School Captains. The nominees for School Captain all spoke with a passion and commitment to serve the school that they love. I am sure our Prefects and Captains will step up to the challenge of supporting our new Year 7 and 8 students who will start at Wavell High next year. I am positive they will fulfil all the roles expected of Prefects and Captains at Wavell State High School with distinction. I congratulate our determined students and staff who participated last weekend in the World War I Queenslander Challenge, a 100 kilometre walk from Woodford to Brisbane through the D’Aguilar State Forest. This challenge required our students and staff to carry with them a brick engraved with the names of Queenslander’s who died in World War I. This event is one of the many which will lead up to the 2015 commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of WWI and Gallipoli. Wavell State High School, named after Lord Wavell, has continued to have very strong links to the service of our men and women to our country. Wavell has a strong partnership with the Kedron Wavell RSL sub-branch through Mr Greg Peak (President). Our new building, due to open for our Junior School next year, will feature a mural wall dedicated to the ANZAC spirit and will serve as a continuing display and living reminder of our history and significant events linked to our service history. We are grateful that this project has been funded though the ANZAC Commemoration Grant provided through the Lilley Electorate and the Department of Veterans Affairs as part of the 100 year ANZAC Commemoration. Tonight, our final Showcase Concert of the year will commence at 7:30pm and will highlight our graduates from Year 12. These talented students only have four weeks of school to complete and I am sure the instrumental music performances will be at the usual very high standard. Mr Bell, Mrs Piggott and Mrs Jones have prepared all our bands and vocalists for an entertaining and enjoyable evening. Exam timetables for our seniors are now posted on the school web-site. Year 12 students have two weeks and Year 11 students three weeks until block exams commence. I expect our students will all continue to perform at their very best for these important end of year exams. Our Year 12s must ensure that they are presented with a certificate to be proud of at graduation on Friday, 21 November . We are currently finalising enrolments and timetabling arrangements for our new Years 7 and 8 classes for 2015. Orientation Day, Monday, 8 December, is fast approaching and we like to be organised and well planned for the day. If you still have a child to enrol or know of a family looking for a great secondary education please ensure their enrolment process and interview has been completed by the end of November. There are thirty (30) places remaining for out of catchment enrolments across Year 7 and 8 at this stage and about twenty (20) vacancies exist for Year 11 academic students. Enrolling early avoids the disappointment of not securing a place. Please phone our enrolment officer Ms Sandra Lock on 3350 0328 for an enrolment pack, interview or to organise a school tour.
