Structural Formula, ShowingMolecular StructureThe chain segments which make upfluoropolymers are referred to as chainmolecules or thread-like molecules, whose characteristic is that they are verylong in relation to their thickness, andthat they have a thread-like mobility.
Fluoropolymers consist of many suchthread-like molecules, whose arrange-ment within the material determine itsstructure, which may be partially crystal-line or highly crystalline.
Partially crystalline means that themolecules are partly amorphous, partlycrystalline, as shown in Fig. 1 .
In contrast, there are also plasticsmaterials with an amorphous structure,i.e. the thread-like molecules are ar-ranged irregularly, like a ball of cottonwool, such as rigid PVC, as shown inFig. 2.
Plastics are solid materials because ofthe forces which are active within thematerial. These are linkage forces whichhold the thread-like molecules together, and forces between the thread-likemolecules, i.e. intermolecular forces,as shown in Fig. 3.
The intermolecular forces change if thedistance of the thread-like moleculesfrom one another alters (cf. magneticforces). If these distances are small, theintermolecular forces will be great, ifthey are large, the forces will be small.
The distance between the molecules—and therefore material strength—can beinfluenced by heat.

Semi-Finished ProductsDetermination of Melt Flow Index(MFI)The melt flow index of a thermoplasticpolymer is determined in accordancewith DIN 53735 to assess its flowbehavior in the plastic state.
The amount of material which issuesfrom the test instrument in 10 minuteswhen subjected to a load of X kg and atemperature of Y °C, is known as themelt flow index (MFI = Y/X in g/10 min.).
If a large amount of material comes outof the nozzle, the melt flow index will behigh (low viscosity). A highly viscousmaterial will thus have a low melt flowindex (high viscosity).

IntroductionIn the fabrication of plant componentsusing FEP, MFA, and PFA lining lami-nates, the sheet edges must be weldedtogether. A perfect weld is of the utmostimportance for the plant to be service-able, since defective welds will enablehighly corrosive chemicals to seepunderneath the lining and attack thestructure underneath. The presentinformation covers various methodswhich have proved suitable for weldingFEP, MFA, and PFA lining laminates.
WeldingFEP, MFA, and PFA can be welded eitherby hot air or by heat element welding.Since the former is the most widely usedand requires the least equipment weshall deal with it first.
FEP, MFA, and PFA sheeting is welded, using 3.5 mm dia. FEP, MFA, or PFAwelding rod and a current of hot air tomelt the material to above its meltingpoint. Since the sheet has a meltingpoint of above 280°C/536°F, theheating element inside the hot airwelding gun must be capable of deliver-ing air at a temperature of 385°C/725°Ffor FEP and MFA, 405°C/761°F for PFA,measured 5 mm in front of the nozzle. No inert gas is needed to protect thepolymer, since it does not oxidize atthese temperatures under normalconditions.
If the temperature is too low, the plasticwill not melt sufficiently, resulting in adefective weld, referred to as a "coldweld". Too high a temperature on theother hand degrades the polymer andresults in a very weak weld and/orstress cracking.
Before welding FEP, MFA, and PFA, thefabric backing must be removed at bothedges in order to achieve a clean joint. The fabric should be removed for adistance of about 6 mm from the edge. This is extremely important since con-tamination by glass fibers is the mainreason why welds are defective. FEP,
MFA and PFA can be welded from bothsides once the fabric backing has beenremoved.
The molds should then be prepared forthe spark test. If metal tables or moldsare used for welding, no preparatorywork is necessary. If, on the other hand, wooden or plastic molds are used, adhesive aluminum tape can be placednear the weld so that the spark test canbe carried out.
The edges of the sheets to be weldedmust be right-angled and parallel, andshould be placed at a distance of about0.8 mm from each other. To preventwarpage due to the very high weldingtemperature, both edges must beclamped down. For straight welds onecan use metal rails, for cylindrical weldsmetal bands. These clamping devicesshould be left in position until the mate-rial has cooled down completely. If theFEP, MFA, or PFA is covered with a FRPconstruction, most of the welding iscarried out before. FEP, MFA, or PFA isbuilt up with the plastic side facing themold.
Immediately before welding, the edgesof the sheets to be joined, as well as thewelding rod, should be cleaned withsolvent, e.g. Freon 113, to remove alltraces of dirt and oil.
FEP, MFA, and PFA do not melt whenheated, only becoming soft. Therefore, inorder to achieve a strong weld, thewelding rod must be forced into thesoftened sheet. For this purpose it ishelpful to use a high speed weldingnozzle fitted with a device for automati-cally feeding the welding rod to theinstrument. Another improvement is ahigh speed nozzle equipped with awheel which exerts pressure on thesoftened welding rod as it flows into thejoint. This type of nozzle may be ob-tained from Electro Chemical Engineer-ing and Manufacturing Co., Emmaus,PA.

17.8 GEORGE FISCHER ‡
As soon as the weld has cooled down,it is subjected to a non-destructivespark test, using an ordinary sparktester, with a maximum voltage of50,000 volts. The sensor should not bekept in one spot for too long, since itcould then burn a small hole in thesheet.
If the sensor indicates that there is ahole in the weld, this should be re-paired. The first step is to remove thebead from the immediate vicinity of thehole. The weld is then renewed and thebead extended on both sides in orderto provide re-inforcement. This reinforc-ing bead should extend about 25 mmbeyond the two ends of the new bead. The repaired weld should then betested again for holes, using the sparktester.
The spark test solely detects small holein the weld. No non-destructive test isknown which can be used to detectinadequate welds apart from thosewith a small hole. It is therefore impor-tant that every welder must qualify byhaving sample welds produced by himsubjected to destructive tests. In thisway one could lay down the conditionsnecessary to regularly achieve hightensile strengths, i.e. amounting to 90 -95% of the tensile strengths of the basematerial.
The above mentioned general methodcan be used to weld FEP, MFA, and PFAlining laminates prior to installation inthe FRP or steel plant component. Thereare, however, differences in the way thewelds are made, depending onwhether the component is made of FRPor steel, and these are dicussed in thefollowing two sections.
Duallaminates (reinforced with FRP)FEP, MFA, or PFA lining laminates/FRPreinforced tanks are made by firstproducing the liner, in a second steparound which the FRP laminate is builtup. All welds (except pipe socketconnections) are made before the load-bearing part of the tank etc. is fabri-cated. This requires certain specialpoints to be considered.
Since FEP, MFA, and PFA is fairlyflexible, especially when it has beenheated, it must be well supportedduring fabrication. This means thatmolds or tools have to be made, on topof which the liner is fabricated. Thesemolds or tools should, however, be keptfairly simple and are usually made ofplywood, sheet metal, or FRP. They arenevertheless essential to obtain prod-ucts with the prescribed dimensions.
When the molds have been prepared, the FEP, MFA, or PFA clamped inposition and the first, above describedwelds have been produced, the weldsshould be made in such a way that theFRP component can be easily fabri-cated. Once welding has been com-pleted, the welds are covered with acap strip of FEP, MFA, or PFA, which iswelded to the original weld so as toobtain a 100% glass surface, whichcan then be readily reinforced with FRP.
When all welds have been covered inthis way, they must be prepared for aquality test. An earthed compound ismade by mixing 45 - 50% w/w ofgraphite flakes with a certain amountof the resin being used to make the FRPlaminate. Masking tape is stuck downon both sides of the weld, and theearthed compound applied. The tapeis then stripped off as soon as thecompound has set. It is also possible touse a graphite-filled non-woven tape(Sigratex®, 30 g/m2) about 20 mmwide.
In this way one can produce a ribbon-like earthed electrode inside the tanketc., which is compatible with the FRPreinforcement wall and forms anintegral part of the liner. This electrodeenables the welds to be spark-tested atany time after the tank etc. has beencompleted.
Steel liningsLining metal tanks with FEP, MFA, or PFArequires a different technique than thatused for duallaminates where the load-bearing walls are already in existence.

Semi-Finished ProductsHere, the liner is prefabricated andbonded to the steel wall and for thisreason it is not possible to make all thewelds before the liner is bonded inposition.
Welds made prior to bonding the linerto the steel wall are produced in thesame way as those for liners intendedfor FRP equipment. However, since thetank walls are electrically conducting, not every weld has to be provided withan earthed covering.
When bonding FEP, MFA, or PFA lininglaminates, these should be brought asclose to each other as possible, withoutoverlapping. As soon as the adhesivehas set and the liner adheres firmly tothe steel surface, the remaining weldscan be made.
Excess adhesive must be removed fromthe weld area before welding canbegin. There will be adhesive in thespace between the two sheets and thishas first to be scraped out beforewelding, which is done by placing alength of round-section welding rod inthe gap and welding in the usual way.The finished weld should be checkedwith a spark tester and repaired wherenecessary.
ConclusionFEP, MFA, and PFA lining laminates canbe welded by various methods. It is upto the fabricator to check whether weldsproduced by the technique suggestedby him are, in fact, sufficiently strong. Itshould be possible to achieve weldswhose tensile strength is 90 - 95 % ofthat of the parent material. Since weldsand welding techniques have a decisiveinfluence upon the quality of FEP, MFA,and PFA lined tanks, special care shouldbe taken to ensure that they are ofconsistent quality.

Bonding TechniquesThese 1-8 mm thick sheets are especiallyrecommended for making equipmentand storage tanks, as well as for liningpurposes. They can easily be joined tothe support material, e.g. glass fiberreinforced plastic (FRP) or the insulatingmaterial. The special stretch-fabric islaminated across the entire width of thesheet by a proprietary technique. Testscarried out during manufacture ensurethat the required minimum adhesion ofthe fabric to the sheet is guaranteed.
These sheets can also be thermoformedand welding presents no problems.
George Fischer engineers will bepleased to advise on the design ofplant and similar projects if the follow-ing are known: composition of theattacking medium, its temperature andits pressure or vacuum.
Characteristics of SYGEF-PVDF SheetsUsed for FRP StructuresLike most polyolefins and chlorinated orfluorinated thermoplastics, SYGEF-PVDFis used for applications in combinationwith FRP in the form of sheets of differentthicknesses (1 .5-5mm). The thicknessesgenerally used are 2-3 mm and 4-5 mm,depending on the conditions. Thesesheets are usually extruded and have aglass cloth or synthetic fabric backing. The latter type of backing has theadvantage of giving a satisfactoryadhesion in combination with excellentthermoforming properties.
The backing is designed to provide anoptimum bond between the SYGEF-PVDF sheet, the anti-corrosion barrier, and the FRP structure which provides thenecessary mechanical strength.
The bond between the SYGEF-PVDFsheet and the FRP structure is thusclearly one of the main features of thesystem. According to British standard4994 which relates to the construction ofequipment made of FRP and compos-ites, the shear strength of compositestructures based on sheets of thermo-plastics in combination with FRP should
be 3.5 MPa and their peel strengthshould be 5 N/mm. It is generallyaccepted in line with the British stan-dards that adhesion values in excess ofthese figures provide a guaranteeagainst the risk of delamination betweenthe composite parts.
The adhesion measured on SYGEF-PVDF/FRP composites according to BS4994 at various temperatures between23-120°C/73-248°F gives values whichare substantially above those requiredby BS 4994 in the case of all the differ-ent types of polyester tested (orthoph-thalic, isophthalic, bisphenol, vinylesterand furane resin).
Other types of adhesion tests, namelythe Climbing Drum Peeling Test (ASTM D1781) and the tensile test (according toDIN 53397) show satisfactory results ofthe SYGEF-PVDF/FRP composites.
Principle of SYGEF-PVDF/FRP Struc-turesThe parts which make up the SYGEFanti-corrosion lining (sheet with backing, thick semi-finished parts, various tubes)are shaped and joined by welding thedifferent parts together, and the systemas a whole is made rigid and reinforcedby the usual techniques based on glassfiber reinforced polyester resin (FRP).
Choice of Reinforcing MaterialsThe type of synthetic fabric to be usedwill depend on the application tempera-ture and the chemical resistance, flame-resistance and resistance to UV re-quired. It is generally accepted that theresins chosen should give the bestpossible performance in order to ensureadditional protection, should the equip-ment be damaged.
Depending on the application, lay-uptechniques such as hand lay-up byplacing mats and glass cloths alter-nately, filament winding, are chosen soas to ensure the performance necessaryfor the application concerned.

17.12 GEORGE FISCHER ‡
Design and Methods of CalculationUsed for Composite StructuresThe SYGEF-PVDF sheet is not taken intoconsideration in the calculation of thethickness necessary for equipmentbased on FRP/thermoplastic membranecomposites to withstand mechanicalstresses. The recommendations con-tained in the codes of construction andgood practice established by SGIPA(Syndical General de l'lndustrie desPlastiques), BS (British Standards), VDI(Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) or SPI(Society of the Plastic Industry) shouldtherefore be consulted.
Use of Composites for the Manufac-ture of EquipmentThe SYGEF-PVDF sheets are molded byconventional methods and joined bybead welding by means of standard hotair torch or by mirror welding using anautomatic welding bench.
It should be noted that SYGEF-PVDF hasa welding factor of approximately 0.85and is consequently particularly safe forconventional welding techniques.
After the welding operation, the weldsare coated on the reverse side with alayer of polyester resin containinggraphite powder filler. The integrity ofthe welds can be checked by sparktesting during the various quality controland acceptance operations and whenthe equipment is in use.
We strongly advise against using a stripof metal or wire to cover the reverse sideof the weld because of the risk ofrapidly spreading corrosion. The weldsare checked by the high frequencyelectric spark test at a level of 10 kV permm thickness of SYGEF-PVDF.
The SYGEF-PVDF sheets joined in thisway are then reinforced using conven-tional lay-up techniques, ensuring thatthe backing fabric is completely wettedby the resin used.
ControlsThe finished equipment is subjected toconventional acceptance tests such as:
• integrity of the welds using an electric spark (on the SYGEF-PVDF side)
• determination of the bond betweenSYGEF-PVDF and FRP according toASTM 1781 on cut sections of manholes, pipe or fittings
• conventional FRP acceptance tests
Field of ApplicationSYGEF-PVDF/FRP-based compositeshave proved reliable for the constructionof conventional equipment used forchemical engineering applications suchas reactors, extraction, neutralisationand distillation columns, storage tanks, covers for electrolytic cells, mixer/decanters, piping etc.
Few industrial sectors exist which do notmake use of SYGEF-PVDF/FRP compos-ites and ample evidence can be foundin fields such as the chemical andpharmaceutical industry, the productionof metals, surface treatment operations(degreasing, electroplating) where thistype of product has been used to solvethe problems connected with suchapplications.
ConclusionsCompared with the thermoplastics thatare generally used in the field of lami-nated structures such as PVC, CPVC, PPor other polyolefins, SYGEF-PVDF consid-erably extends the range of applicationsfor such structures because of its greaterchemical resistance, better resistance toabrasion, greater level of purity, widerrange of application temperatures andgreater reliability in welding applica-tions.

DescriptionSYGEF-PVDF EK (elastomer backed) sheetis a two layer laminate of PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) and vulcanizedchloroprene rubber. Available are threethicknesses of these linings, with thethickness of the PVDF available in1 .2 mm, 2 mm, or 3 mm. The chloroprenelayer is 0.7 mm thick in each version.
ApplicationSYGEF-PVDF EK Sheet is primarilydesigned as a lining material for metalvessels. It can also be applied to othersubstances such as concrete. EK Sheetprovides the excellent temperature andcorrosion resistance of a fluoroplasticcombined with the ease of installation ofa rubber lining.
Service CapabilitiesThe EK Sheet is recommended forcontinuous service at temperatures up to176°F (80°C) and is inert to most acids, chlorinated solvents, halogens, andaromatics. It is extremely resistant toabrasion and due to its chemical "slick-ness" resists caking. It is also recom-mended for use with foods, ultra-purechemicals, and Dl Water as a contami-nation-free lining material.
Advantages over Conventional LiningMaterialsThe major problem with thermoplasticlinings for metal vessels has been thevast difference in thermal expansionbetween the two materials leading tosevere shear stresses, and delaminationat the interface when exposed to el-evated temperatures. The elastomerbacking on the EK Sheet helps distributethese stresses and allows the thermoplas-tic to move alleviating those stresses. TheEK Sheet also provides a tough surfaceresistance to abrasion and wear fargreater than spray coatings. The en-hanced temperature and chemicalresistance of PVDF extends the service ofrubber linings.
The Adhesive SystemThe EK Sheet has its own speciallyformulated adhesive system. The adhe-sive system is provided in a kit form tocover approx. 10 square feet. The kitconsists of a primer to be applied to the
sand-blasted surface of the vessel, acontact adhesive and a catalyst.
