The focus of this year’s seminar is the Horse, the Hoof, and the Biomechanics of the Hind Limb and will begin with a welcome to the Gluck Center from our interim Director. Following the welcome, Dr. Stuart E. Brown II, DVM, Vice President for Equine Safety, Keeneland Association, will overview the current status of racetrack safety matters. Dr. Brown will moderate the morning session which presents as an update of progress in the area of motion sensor technology in racing and sport horses, with a focus on optimizing safety for both horse and rider. The Equinosis technology presents first, with Professor Kevin Keegan reviewing current racetrack data collection and analysis, followed by a presentation from Dr. Clara Fenger on motion sensor technology data from yearlings. Then we have an update from Dr. David Lambert on accelerometer data acquired from racing Thoroughbred horses and the biomechanical challenges faced by racing horses. This presentation will be followed by Dr. Emmanuelle van Erck Westergren, who will outline the applications and uses of the Arioneo motion sensor technology in sport horses. We then go to Hong Kong, where Dr. Bronte Forbes will bring us up to date on use of the Equinosis “Lameness Locator” technology in Singapore and elsewhere. The morning program closes with a round table discussion moderated by Dr. Stuart Brown, with Dr. Keegan, Dr. Lambert, Dr. van Erck Westergren, Dr. Forbes, Mr. Sandy Hawley, Dr. Clara Fenger and Dr. Robert Holland. Lunch will be most generously hosted by Mr. Doug Watkins and Breeder’s Farrier Supply of Lexington.

The afternoon session will focus on the hoof and the Biomechanics of Hind Limb Function and will be moderated by Professor Scott D. Stanley of The Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center. The area of Hind Limb structure and Biomechanics will first be overviewed by Mr. Mitch Taylor, following which Dr. Kent Allen will present an analysis of hind limb pathologies in sport horses. Mr. Steve Stanley will present shoeing strategies that both protect the hooves and optimize Hind Limb Function. Professor Michael Savoldi will present an analysis of two common pathologies of the equine hind foot, and Dr. J Ramon Batalla will present an analysis of hind limb lameness in relation to the foot. The afternoon session closes with a round table discussion moderated by Professor Stanley with Mr. Taylor, Dr. Kent Allen, Mr. Steve Stanley, Professor Savoldi, Dr. J. Ramon Batalla, Dr. Rob Holland, Mr. Duane Raglin, Mr. Hans Albrecht and Dr. Thomas Tobin.
