Line art using Photoshop Line art images are produced better in

Adobe Illustrator. There are multiple ways of creating line

art effects from images in Photoshop, but not all produce satisfactory results for illustration.

Two methods are described here.

Method I

Tracing over the image by hand with the help of Pen tool.

Stamp filter (Filter > Stylized > Stamp) is used to produce a smooth edged black and white image.

Any unwanted pixel spots are erased.8

Limitations of Method I

It produces highly stylized but recognizable portrait.

It requires to know where the Pen lines are needed to be drawn, and tiresome to continue with complicated outlines.

Method II

On a duplicate layer of the photo, Smart Blur filter is use with Edge Only mode.

Creates an inverted outline.13

The image is inverted. Poster Edges filter is applied. (Filter >

Artistic > Poster Edges)

A crosshatch pattern is needed to shade the image (drawn with white background).

Straigt line selections are drawn and stroked. Alt + Shift + Right cursor is used to nudge a copy of it by 10 pixels.

A square area is selected and pattern is defined.15

On another duplicate copy of the photo, the Threshold effect is used to produce a dark version of the image. (Image > Adjustments > Threshold)

Using the Magic Eraser tool all the white portions are deleted.

From the Layer Style dialog box, Pattern Overlay is used to apply the diagonal stripes to the layer.

They only show up over the black areas.

Using another duplicate copy of the original photo, Threshold effect is applied to create a paler version.

With a new version of the stripes pattern with lines in the other way, the image is shaded.

Layer mode is set to Multiply.18

The original inverted Smart Blur layer revealed and brought to the top.

The Layer mode is set to Multiply.

On another copy of the original photo, Threshold is used to retain only the darkest parts of the image.

The layer is brought to the top and set to Multiply.

Features of Method II

It is more automated and requires no drawing skill.

The results are impressive and no part of the image is lost.

For a more naturalistic approach, concentrated circles or wavy lines can be used instead of straight diagonals, although it takes some time to arrange the curves convincingly.
