DIRECTOR’S CORNER

Happy March and April. The calendars are full of exciting things to do at the Senior Center. I encourage you to take part in something that will bring joy to you. Thanks always to the many, many members who volunteer their time to make this Senior Center so vibrant. I recently completed a yearend report to the Board of Trustees. As I reflected on 2017, I was reminded that we accomplished lots and those accomplishments were due to YOUR involvement! We can always use more volunteers. If you want to teach a class…let us know. If you can drive a couple of hours a week…your help is invaluable. If you have time to be part of a committee…we can use you. Whatever you can do, we want you. Have a great spring! Karen Wolford, Executive Director [email protected]

Housing Needs AssessmentCommunity Conversation On Thursday, April 5 at 10:30 am the Senior Center Great Room will be the site of one of the community conversations that the Village is having after the recent housing needs assessment. Be part of the conversation. Have your voice heard!

From the Transportation Desk “I am going to try to pay attention to the spring . . . I am going to close my eyes and listen.” Anne Lamott. Anne Lamott’s counsel is terrific for hikers in the Glen. For those of us behind the wheel of a car not so much. Spring is a time to pay close attention to the road ahead. Winter will play havoc with early Spring, with the occasional snow and ice. The startling discovery of a new tirewrecking pothole on your street is likely. More creatures in the rightofway is also certain to occur as the days get longer. Hibernating animals are emerging from their Winter naps, and bipeds, too, are awakening and taking to the streets on all types of wheeled contraptions. Be safe! Be alert! The Senior Center is always looking for volunteers to help get passengers to and fro each week. As I write this post, there are over 20 rides scheduled for the week ahead. The effort volunteers extend to meet the ongoing demand for rides is outstanding! They could use your help. If you care to “Give a Lift” to the community, use my contact info below, and discover how easy it is to contribute to seniors’ mobility. Robert Libecap, Transportation Program Manager 7675751 x 104, [email protected]

2018 Greene County Senior Recognition Luncheon Join the Greene County Council on Aging to honor an outstanding

senior citizen or couple from each of the 10 senior centers in Greene County. A surprise honoree will be chosen from the Yellow Springs Senior Center! The luncheon is held on Wednesday, April 25 from 11 am to 1 pm.The cost is $10. You can register to attend the event at the Yellow Springs Senior Center. Registrations are due by April 13.

State tax assistance is available at all locations for instate residents, and may be available to outofstate residents of select neighboring states. Please contact sites in your neighboring state to confirm availability.Site hours are subject to change on a weekly basis. Therefore, please check again the day before you plan to go to the site.

HOMEMAKERS LENDING A HAND

The Homemakers from the Yellow Springs Senior Center are pleased to offer seniors in the Village and beyond a helping hand. Cleaning, running errands and cooking cover some of what can be done for you. The Homemaker Program works to help create

a circle of care so people who need help can remain in their homes.

ACTIVITIES PROGRAM A sincere thank you to all new and renewing members of the Senior Center! Memberships are the bedrock of support which makes the Center run. The $20 single membership does not seem like a lot when you think of all the things that it helps operate throughout the year. Just in the Activities Program alone it helps with transportation, planning, organizing, facilitating and supplying 41 groups, games, classes, events, parties, meals, outings, support groups, medicalrelated activities, language learning and exercise activities. Just taking that last category alone, there are ten exercise classes or exercise groups! Members receive the newsletter in the mail so you know when everything is scheduled. Looking forward to seeing you at the Center! If you have any ideas or suggestions for Activities, please let me know.
