Background
In accordance with NCAA regulations and in an effort to continually improve the quality of both the educational and
athletic experiences of students at Alderson Broaddus University, the University released an anonymous survey during
the final few weeks of the 2016 Spring Semester. The survey was open to all graduating senior athletes and covered a
wide range of topics concerning their experiences at ABU. Participants were entered into a random drawing for one of
three $50.00 Visa Gift cards as an incentive for their cooperation. Identifiable and demographic information regarding
these student athletes has been withheld from this compiled report.

10) In your opinion, what changes would make the most significant improvement in the
academic success of student-athletes, keeping in mind the questions listed above?
N/a
Flexibility of schedules
not missing so much class and if missing class setting aside time for the players to work
on homework on the bus, at the hotel or between games during down time.
Have the coaches more willing to allow academic success and harsher punishments with
missed classes and other academic blunders.
More tutors available for athletes
SENIOR ATHLETE SURVEY RESULTS 2016 - OCTOBER 7, 2016 13
The professors and the coaches being on the same page and not on 2 different planets.
Also the coaches caring about ALL the players and not the "starters"
Possibly have more games during the weekend
It's always important to take care of academic stuff before traveling for matches. For
example, exams/quizzes should be taken prior to leaving campus.
a forum for student athletes to have fun and express their thought and opinions
More consideration of course load and difficulty
I am a biology major and I believe for my major the most important aspect to doing well
in class is to show up. It is very easy to get behind when you do not attend your class
sessions so I think that my coach not allowing us to skip any class unless we were
playing or traveling was very beneficial.
If students are struggling in a class, and there is a study group with professor/ TA during
practice time, letting that student attend the study session.
move due dates back for athletes
Allowing professors
The teachers (not all) being a little more lenient, it's almost like they want you to fail.
A student organization comprised of student athletes who send the notes from class
when an athlete is absent due to traveling to a game. This would help keep student
athletes up to date on class material.
More mandatory study halls and more teacher flexibility
More support from the faculty and staff. Some see athletics as a bad thing and can be
less flexible. On the other hand, student-athletes have to put in the extra effort to work
with the faculty and staff better.
The competition schedule was very repetitive, so I would miss the same classes every
week. Make the schedule more flexible different throughout the weeks.
SENIOR ATHLETE SURVEY RESULTS 2016 - OCTOBER 7, 2016 14
Have professors be more understanding and having coaches athletes And professors
work closely together
Having the coaches actually do the study tables due to we have not had that when coach
Tierney came to Alderson Broaddus. I have never had a professor lead study sessions
either.
N/A
Coaching allowing school to come first without penalizing layers for it
Part of being a student athlete in college is time management when it comes to
academics and athletics. The university and athletic programs can only do so much. The
rest stems from the student athlete them self. it doesnt matter how much mandated
academic help you provide, if the athlete isn't willing or motivated to do their part, it's
totally futile. Study hall does help and teacher flexibility as well. Knowing that the faculty
support the athletic programs helps the student to be more motivated to stay on top of
their work while in season. But when a teacher is not very helpful or is demeaning
towards the athletics, it will reflect in the academic performance of their students.
Shorter practice scheduling and coaching keeping in mind that athletes also have other
work to do so cutting out 10pm practices during the weekday
Professor/student relationships
Travel and competition, having to leave every weekend, and leave Thursday and miss
majority of Friday classes was hard on the academics.
Hold more study tables
None
Friday meets were a big challenge for a lot of my teammates because they had to miss at
least 4-5 Fridays worth of classes and sometimes even a Thursday.
Playing games only on weekends.
SENIOR ATHLETE SURVEY RESULTS 2016 - OCTOBER 7, 2016 15
place more game days on weekends, are have travel time according to the dates. have
games on sundays instead of staurdays if away
Be more flexible with mandatory study hours to accommodate student specific needs.
I don't think that athletes should be forced to complete assignments days before the rest
of the class. I also don't think we should be given extra days because we are athletes i
just feel like professors should make assignments due during the week or have their
tests in the middle of the week when athletes are less likely to be gone. A lot of the
professors here don't understand the time commitment of being a student athlete or just
don't seem to care. When i started here as a freshmen it seemed as though almost all
the teachers resented us however as time has gone on it has gotten better and there are
some professors now who are more willing to work with our busy schedules.

Have events for the girl’s game so that we have fans rather than always having
themes during the men's game.
In regards to gym time, I think it is unfair that with the issues i have, sports get
bumped or double booked do to carelessness in the scheduling. Each year I have
been here there has been some sort of conflict, and it is always in regards to
basketball taking precedence over other sports that are now on campus, and how
they just so happen to take priority every time.
Cross country needs more support of fellow students to come to meets. No one
comes

Cause there's nothing here
Just to get away from ab for a little
To go to the store, to go out to the bar or club, to go to Arden.
Because we are not allowed to do what we want on this campus, which actually makes
it less safe due to the traveling to where we needed to go.
Dry campus
To escape and recover. Not worry about things for a little
We are not always treated as young adults so students feel the need to go off campus.
Due to the lack of activities on campus, students choose to go off campus.

having fun for a situation they over reacted to (it wasn’t a riot) You can’t do anything

To go to eat or the grocery store or the movies
Great question and I hope you actually take these answers into consideration. I live in
Kincaid and there have been many times which the RD's (especially Lexi Elliot) have
unfairly treated students and specific rooms. She would have campus security waiting
to see individuals enter and leave rooms then have security enter and write the rooms
up. This is ridiculous. You cannot trap students in their rooms and make them feel as if
they have no freedoms and expect them to obey your rules. It's baffling to me how we
pay to live here, this is private property and a private campus, and yet you still have
the Philippi police being called for non-security related matters and threatening to
charge students with public intoxication. According to the law the Philippi police cannot
patrol or hand out citations unless it's a matter of safety. A couple drunk, compliant
people in the courtyard is not a matter of safety. Also when students are doing outdoor
activities in the courtyard and get sent to their rooms, you cannot threaten them when
they are on their catwalk. Another example of how the staff here does a very poor job.
This is my home for 8 months out of the year and you will not make me feel as if I am
trapped in my room. I don't believe this campus should be a dry campus. Students are
going to drink, and making this a dry campus is just asking for more trouble for the
RA's and is like setting a trap for the students. Last and most importantly, we are all
adults, and if you want us to act like adults you must stop treating us as if we are
children. We go off campus for social events because the rules here are outlined so
heavily that no matter what you do, you're still at risk of getting in trouble. Especially
with Lexi Elliot, she is a very poor leader and does not know how to handle conflict
situations ex. Greek week.
Not much to do on campus / for better/ different food. Dry campus.
because the rules at AB are to strict and we can’t be a real college campus, it's like a
glorified high school
More opportunities
For a release from this isolated school, that has a dead end town. The location of our
school kills spirits.

Because there is not a lot to do at Alderson Broaddus outside of sports and class, and
it is a small campus so sometimes you just need to get away (change in scenery). To
be honest, there is not a whole lot to do in Barbour County and Philippi either, though I
am not complaining. I wanted a small school in a more rural setting when I was
picking, and I do love it here.
The campus is so small and acts like a high school. People want to get away from that
and explore.
Aruda
Don't want to get written up. More to do off of campus rather than on campus.
The rules on campus do not allow you to have optimal fun. Off campus housing is
limited and not reasonable.
Because we can't have fun hour getting in trouble right away
I mean, we live here 24/7. Sometimes it's just nice to do something different or go
somewhere else.
Deven ruins everything. Fun isn't allowed.
Because there is nothing to do on campus
It is the same thing very weekend, and times of other events would always run with
games or practices, so going off campus on the weekends when there was lack of
activities was the best choice.

we went off campus.
To engage with others. Much of WV revolves around nature, which includes areas
outside of campus
It’s not a wet campus. The campus is too small, and OSA is too trick, enough for
people to not want to stay on campus
As a student athlete I'm afraid to participate in social activities because of
repercussions I might face if I was 'caught' participating in.
There is really only so much we can do here on campus without getting in trouble,
being 22 years old and getting in trouble for drinking a beer is absurd. Also to
seclusion of such a small town doesn't offer much in the way of social activities.

partially
Yes and no, the alcohol free campus is a bit ridiculous. But overall i believe so.
Not completely, I thought people would have been nicer and there would not have
been so much petty drama. I also thought athletically there would have been more
compassion and love for the game by all players at the college level.
Yes, they were, would not change a single thing.

The first year, yes. However, the school is a completely different place now. I did
know that some things were going to change when I came here, but I do not feel that
they are all positive. I would much rather the school be like it was my first two years,
but then again that much change in so little time would be hard for anyone.

39) How can we make the athletic program and experience better for student-athletes
who are to follow in your footsteps?
Response
Cut the football program.
More communication between coaches and teachers for better schedules during
season or more flexible ones.
Recruit people that are here for the right reasons and create a more positive
environment within each team.
Allow other teams, besides football, have better traveling accommodations and
practice facilities. i.e. a dome for the turf. Also have the football not stand on the
sidelines during one of the games. Basically just if the AD could be fairer, that would
be great.

Fairness from the coaches to the players. Fairness to all the players. And the

Have better coaching staff
At least let them have a forum to voice their opinions and concerns. A place to have
fun. Keeping some of the facilities like the turf field open to practice and run on
Better facilities
Athletically, my experience here was pretty good. Bring RD's and student affairs
workers in who are competent and can handle situations fairly.
be more understanding about study groups
better budget
Be open and honest as possible with scholarships and what your expectations are
from the incoming student-athlete.
I don't know.
Bigger locker rooms. Better transportation to games. The AD should not also be a
coach of sport. This creates latent bias.
Not make everything about the football team. Have more of an emphasis on all
sports
I think the programs need to work to build a better respect with the campus
community. Certain teams have reputations that are not positive, and this effects
everyone on that team and the department. More involvement with the other
organizations, and more camaraderie between each of the teams would go a long
way. I know that some teams do not like, or know the other teams. If our
organization is not united, how can we expect other organizations and departments
to unite with us?
SENIOR ATHLETE SURVEY RESULTS 2016 - OCTOBER 7, 2016 41

Have a better student athlete community. Build the different programs up and
support each other.
Encourage joining other thing
Get better facilities such as the coliseum and better equipment that is new and
improved for the weight room. Invest on another facility for more room and not
having early morning and late practices. Better food for the athletes.

Get a new girls basketball coach
I don't know
Get coaches that care about academics as much as they care about sports
Have more activities at sporting events to get a better outcome of students to come
to all eventS.
Be clear about things going on. Bring in coaches that are going to take teams to the
next level, people will look at schools that are growing and reaching out to be
better. If something is going to be enforced, enforce it, do not just say it.
Hire better coaching staff
It's already a good experience
Better facilities, more coaching staff, and more throwing equipment.
Announce Games more often throughout campus. Promote attendance.
If people want to transfer, allow them to transfer
Be real with incoming student athletes when recruiting.

Update the weight room. Maintain the field better. Also I know it’s hard for football
because there are so many players but it would be awesome to get some free gear

Update athletic training facilities so the hydro pool gets fixed!! It's been broken for 6

40) If you were being recruited again, would you choose Alderson Broaddus University?
Why or why not?
Response
Yes
Yes the reason being is because i met alot of good friends here.
I am not sure because I have enjoyed meeting all the students that I have but if I
knew how much drama was here at AB I maybe would have changed my mind about
where I went to school and not played sports in college.
Yes, not many people can say they started a program.
I have mixed feelings about this. I enjoy the people I have met here and experiences
here but just the way the school has handled situations on campus I do not agree
with.
no. Because it was not the experience i wanted to have for 4 years. There was more

leaders and are not good at their jobs with regard to the alumni relations coordinator.

No, because I could have gone to a better program
Yes, I've made several friends and memories here. Best four years.
Strong possibility that I wouldn't, but I cannot say for sure.
No, i would have chosen a bigger school in a better town, with better funding.
No. Student life here sucks, RA's are always trying to catch you doing something
wrong. We get kicked out of school if were caught drinking when we are of age. Feels
like the athletic department only cares about recruiting and not wins. That's not a real
program. Real programs care about wins/losses cause that's what gets recruits here.
Plus weight room id\s ran just by football so it is god awfully hard trying to get better
at this place.
I do not know, honestly. When I was being recruited, this was a different place. The
AB that I came to was a perfect fit for me! I do not know that I would have changed a
thing (it was still a "college" then). I loved the setting, the team, the faculty;
however, now that it is almost unrecognizable from that time I do not know that I
could give a definitive answer.
Yes, Although I didn't get the experiences I thought I would, I still had a blast.

No, there was no consistency, the coaching was awful the last 2 years, and to top it all
off I was told that my surgery for an ACL injury I had three years ago in the beginning
of the season would be taken care of financial wise and that was not the case. I have
to pay $4,000 out of pocket now.
No, I do not regret my decision of coming here but if I could do it again I would pick a
place where I could start
Yes, if Josh Allen would have stayed my coach
Yes I would. Because I'm happy with the education I received and the friends I made
No, the recruiting process was full of lies and the coach wasn't the man I thought he
was going to be
No, it is not what I expected With all the changes
From an athletic point of view, maybe not just because there was a lot to go through
for four years, such as finding four new coaches. I do believe that what would bring
me here is certain people, and where the program was going, and not hearing what
people want to hear, but say actual facts about the programs.
Yes, they provided me with a free education and a chance to play the sport I love
Yes, I like the small campus, players and coaches
Despite the lack of coaching, facilities, and equipment, yes I would choose to go to AB
all over again. I have made some amazing friends here, through track and school, that
have turned into my second family, and I wouldn't trade my time and experience with
them for anything.
Possibly, The field for competition is sub par at best. We do not play many home
games but we could have played more if we had a nice field. The opportunity to play
right away was still an attraction.
I would for the people and the facilities, but not on the hands of administration or OSA
SENIOR ATHLETE SURVEY RESULTS 2016 - OCTOBER 7, 2016 45

This is too difficult a question to answer simply because honestly if i were to go back
in time i probably wouldn't have played football. I guess I wouldn't though, not that I
don't like the people here because i do, I have made a lot of friends and my coaches
were all great. The food was terrible to say the least and i think thats probably the
biggest turnoff. Also a lot of the teachers and other faculty/staff were rude. So no I
probably would not choose to come here again.

Response
-Recruit for quality, not quantity!
As I have stated previously, I think you need to very much consider the University's
stand on the alcohol policy. You are setting the students up for failure and pushing a
lot of your athletes to transfer. The RD's really are setting a very negative tone on a
University that is overall pretty good. Our economic situation is not good enough to
be pushing students away because the policies are not well thought out.
An needs to lighten up on rules, we are a college out in the middle of West Virginia, it
was fun but being at college didn't make it fun is I didn't have the team or my friends
on campus I would have left
I wouldn't trade my decision upon choosing AB for anything.
Not happy after these three years here. Just feel like everything is about football. Not
to mention our program was not tough enough. Kids took it as a joke and it in turn
ruined my career.
I do love the school. I have had many great and valuable experiences here that I
may not have had in other places. There are so many different people here from all
over, and I love that I got to be in the mix. I will miss all my friends, coaches, and
teachers so much. Because it is a small school, I had the opportunity to meet so
many people outside of sports too.
If coach d was here all four years the softball program would be unstoppable. When
bowers was here he only cared about a few girls. Coach d has her whole heart into
this program and will continue to go up even if we didn't have the best season. I
honestly think she is what will be good for this program and will continue to make it
grow and be there for her players
People don't give AB as much credit as it deserves. Yeah, there are things that suck
about it but at the same time, nothing in life is perfect and if you learn to get by with
what you've been given, then you'll be just fine.
SENIOR ATHLETE SURVEY RESULTS 2016 - OCTOBER 7, 2016 48

AB has been a great experience, but tell recruits the truth and do not fill their heads
with thoughts of what could be, tell them what will be.
Alderson Broaddus was a great fit for me academically and athletically. The social life
experience was average. Academically, I was able to build a strong relationship with
my professors which helped a lot as an athlete. The facilities are well below average
which makes recruiting very difficult. The coaching staff was a strong attraction so
strong facilities would really help enrollment at this institution. Overall, no
complaints. I sincerely enjoyed my time as a student athlete at Alderson Broaddus.
Being a senior student athlete I faced enormous pressure and anxiety regarding my
sport. I wish that I had been able to be more open about these problems with my
coaches/professors/advisers.
I liked almost all the people and all my teammates. I feel like my coaches would
definitely do anything they could to help any one of us out if we needed it. Strictly
speaking about athletics I had a very good experience and had memories that I will
never forget.
