Currently, 44 million Americans are responsible for the care of an older adult according to AARP reports. A recent survey of more than 2,500 family caregivers found that 25 percent of participants said they felt unprepared to serve as a caregiver. Only 17 percent of older adults reside in a nursing facility. Most are cared for at home. In-home care expenses are significantly less than long-term care facility expenses, but many Americans anticipating caring for an older family member still feel unprepared for the

Be Prepared to CareBy Caitlin Campbell, Region 3B Area Agency on Aging

financial burden. Children and grandchildren of older adults say they are anxious at the prospect of caring for an aging family member. Yet in most cases, it is adult children or other family members who provide nearly all of the care for older adults. And most “retired” caregivers will say they would do it again because of the satisfaction it brought to them and for the person they cared for.So how do you prepare for the care of an older family member? Here are a few key questions to answer as you prepare to care for an aging parent, spouse or sibling:•DoIknowwhattheirwishesareiftheywereunabletomakemedicaldecisionsorwere

not able to continue living alone?•DoIknowwhereimportantdocuments, suchasinsurance, wills, orfinancialstatements

arelocated?DoIhavetheauthoritytotakeoverhisorherfinancesiftheagingfamilymember can no longer manage money?

• Ismyhomesetuptoensureeaseofaccessandmobilityforanolderadultorpersonwitha disability?

•WhatarethepotentialcareneedsanddoIknowtheagenciesandresourcesinmycommunity that can help us meet those needs?

•CanImanageallofthecareneedsby myself?

•Whatadditionalservicesmightbeneeded as my elder’s care needs increase?

•Howcan Igetsupportor takeabreak?

•HowdoItakecareofmyself?

These are just a few of the questions and issues you may need to think through before you become a caregiver. Preparation and planning is your ally. Lack of preparation and planning can be your enemy if the need for caregiving comes on quickly, such as after a fall or unplanned hospital stay.Work through thesequestionswithyour parents, spouse or other family members who may need care as they age in place. You’ll be glad that you were prepared to care.

Duringthe last15years therehasbeentremendousstridesmade inthe treatment of varicose veins. There is no longer any place for the old fashioned “vein strippings.” Besides having a potentially difficult recovery, the success rate for the operation was only about 80 percent. The newer treatments have a 96-99 percent rate of success, and can be done in the office, with a minimal recovery. Most patients are back to normalactivityin3-4days.Withthepropertreatment,notonlywillyourlegs feel better, they will look much better too. Venous insufficiency is when the blood does not get out of the legs efficiently, putting pressure on the nerves, the veins in the skin, and the skin itself. This results in pain, heaviness, aching, varicose veins, spider veins, skin rashes, skin itching, ulcers, or infections and can occur in anyone; young or old, obese or thin, men or women, athletes or couch potatoes.

Are You Afraid Of Varicose Vein Treatment? Well Fear No More!

On November 1, President Barack Obama declared November 2011 as National Family Caregivers Month, a continuation of an effort started in 2009 to use the month of November to recognize the efforts of family caregiv-ersintheUnitedStates.Inmakingthisdeclaration,PresidentObamastated,“Wehonorthetirelesscompassionof Americans who heal, comfort, and support our injured, our elders, and people with disabilities…let the quiet perseverance of our family caregivers remind us of the decency and kindness to which we can all aspire.”

Originally recognized as a week of acknowledgement, it has now expanded to encompass an entire month anchored by Thanksgiving, a holiday celebrating the importance of family. The National Family Caregivers Month initiative seeks to educate and raise awareness of issues involving family care while celebrating the support of family members that commit to caring for a loved one in need. It also highlights the important efforts of these caregivers and brings awareness to local programs and services that can support family caregivers.

Caregiving is a year-round effort for the 65 million Americans who provide care for family members. Their efforts are valued at more than 375 million dollars. Fortunately, there are resources in our community to help family caregivers in their efforts to ensure dignity, compassion and quality care for elders. The National Family Caregiver Program, funded by the Administration on Aging and administered locally by Region 3B Area Agency on Aging, offers support, resources, and services to help caregivers in our community. Locally, this program is housed with Senior Health Partners (SHP). SHP has many support groups, educational programs, health and well-ness and emergency respite services for caregivers and older adults throughout Calhoun County. To learn more about their programs, contact Anne Clark, SHP’s Program Coordinator, at 269-441-0920.

There’s no place like home. But “home” isn’t always safe if Alzheimer’s has slipped in through the back door and attacked one of its occupants. It’s never the front door where this dreaded visitor can be confronted and promptly escorted out. No, Alzheimer’s sneaks in subtly, often leaving the one closest to its victim the last to recognize its presence. Caring for a loved one through the many stages of Alzheimer’s isn’t easy. The once casual reminder eventually turns into the need for repetitious prompting—to the exhaustion of the caregiver. An incident thirty years ago becomes more familiar to the victim than a con-versation with a spouse in the last five minutes. The inability to perform daily activities, let alone process new information, makes for frustration and fear—for everyone!Doesthissoundfamiliar?Haveyourdaysturnedintonightsandyournightsintonight-mares?Ifso,don’tletpridekeepyoufromaskingforhelp.Don’tletguiltkeepyoufromdoing what’s best for both you and your loved one. You can do it!Short term memory loss may make your loved one forget which decade and in which home he resides, so don’t let the car leave your drive without you. This is a good time to make an appointment with the doctor and let him say “driving is off limits until tests results are in.” If your doctor is at all familiar with dementia, this won’t be a problem, and with reminders of the doctor’s remarks, you won’t personally suffer as much backlash when you refuse to hand over the keys.As with driving, leaving an Alzheimer’s victim who is an elopement risk alone while you slip off to the store can be disastrous. Locking the doors while you’re gone should NEVER be done.Whatifthere’safire?Howwillhe/shegetout?Nowisthetimetolookatpermanentresidency in a memory specific home. Find one with a professional, friendly staff to take over the care you’ve been doing for so long. This will not keep you from “caring” for your loved one, and your own health may improve. So, if it’s Alzheimer’s, there is something you can do. Start by researching memory care facili-ties. Ask about staff-to-resident ratios. Staff credentials. State citations. Are exit doors secured? Is it clean? Are there smells? Are exer-cise, art, music, activities and religious services offered? Is there a secured outside area for resi-dents to enjoy during nice weather? And finally, are residents happy? It won’t be easy, but if you act while your loved one can still acclimate to a new “home,” it will be so much better for him or her—and eventually even you.

Not always does a title reflect what someone does. The title Care Giver is a succinct literal definition of a role many assume in their lifetime. A Care Giver is anyone who is engaged in the pursuit of providing any level of care to someone. The recipient of the care, for the pur-poses of this discussion will include family, loved ones, neighbors, and anyone who needs care. The care given may range from a “hands off” approach, guiding and directing the recipient through the myriad of agencies and service providers. To delivering direct patient care twenty four hours a day to a frail parent or loved one. Regardless of the specific type of care or the particular recipient there seems to be a few common obstacles to doing this job. They include but are not limited to: time, self determina-tion and mixed messages. Time is the most common cause of frustration and burn-out. Time slices in two directions. Not enough time to care for the loved one and not enough time for the care giver to recover from this exhausting work. The first temporal frustration is linked to unrealistic expectations. How long does it take to eat a meal? It is common to assume that a frail elderly person needing help eating should be able to eat a meal in fifteen minutes however it is not uncommon to need 30-45 minutes to help feed someone, this difference between realities (forty-five minutes) versus the expected out come(fifteen minutes) leads to frustration. If one multiplies this thirty minute disparity by ALL of the chores required to

give care one could end up spending hours more than expected pro-viding care for a family member. The second aspect of time for care givers is that they do not invest time into recharging their own spirit. It is crucial that all care givers take time to nurture themselves. Try the 10 percent rule as a guide. Try to reinvest ten percent of the time spent care giving into you. Go for a walk, read a book, exercise, take a nap. Recharge yourself. Self determination can be a source of frustration. In America the freedom of self determination is wonderful. But as a care giver it can be frustrating when the decisions of a capable loved one conflict with the goals of the care giver. Good advice to care givers is that some-times you need to walk away from unreasonable demands. The law and principles of ethics give a person the right to make poor choices. These same constructs of our civilized world give you the right to walk

away from “unreasonable demands”. Unfortunately a care giver needs to give a capable adult enough room to fail and then perhaps a reasonable solution to a problem can be reached. The final barrier to caregivers is “mixed messages”. It is crucial as one gives care to a loved one that clearly articulated outcomes and goals of specific care issues are discussed. Everyone involved in the care of an individual needs to be on the same page. It is important that questions about pain control, diet and nutrition, activities and end of life be clearly answered. As mentioned earlier a capable adult should make their own decisions and care givers should comply to the extent that the request is reasonable. In situations that involve more than one decision maker a clear consensus must be reached. Not many challenges in life bring the satisfaction that the job of care giver conveys. This exhausting and rewarding role requires time, respect for the decisions of others as well as clear communication.
