We have a solution to offer you. Scot and Paula Ruska will be hosting a small group which will meet at the church building at 10:30 AM on Wednesdays. The first meeting will be Wednesday, November 15th, and we plan on taking about an hour to discuss what we want to do about timing and food for future meetings. Light refreshments will be served. We’d be delighted if you would join us! If you can e-mail us in advance at [email protected], it will help us to know how many to expect. If you can’t email us, please come anyway. Their phone number will remain the same as in our directory. We wish them well. VOTE The presidential election on November 8th will be decided regardless of our feelings and opinions about the two main candidates. Our country’s direction (economy, energy, immigration, education, foreign affairs, safety, terrorism, and Supreme Court) for many years will be determined by our vote. It is imperative that we VOTE! Absentee: Tuesday, October 11th - November 5th Early vote: Saturday, October 22nd - November 5th Election Day: Tuesday, November 8th WELCOME We welcome Mary March to Netherwood. Mary attended the Avalon congregation for many years. She is no stranger to Netherwood, as she has been an avid Senior Matinee fan for about nine years and often enjoys attending our Sharing Our Love luncheons as well. We love you Mary!

CONGRATULATIONS We congratulate Wes and Glenda Gray (former members of Netherwood Park) for their winning the New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity horse race! The two-year-old filly (girl), Waltzing Attila, won over eight boys and one other girl by three lengths. She placed 3rd in her first race and 2nd in her second race, before winning this, her third race. GET READY Get ready to come and enjoy our traditional Thanksgiving Luncheon. As usual, our feast will be catered by Cracker Barrel with the entertainment provided by the “Plumb Adequate Band” (David Hise of the Belen congregation), featuring Easy Listening and Classic Country music. Paddington Bear

When he first shows up at London's Paddington Station, the smallish orphan bear with the bright red hat is really feeling … a little lost. He knows he's been sent here from Darkest Peru to find a loving human family to take him in. The sign his aunt put around his neck says as much. But the reactions from the many Londoners bustling past him aren't quite what he expected. They hardly even listen long enough for him to politely introduce himself.

Perhaps he isn't doing it right.

His loving Aunt Lucy - who, by now, is settled comfortably in a home for retired bears - had told him about human ways, you see. She assured him that they would "not have forgotten how to treat a stranger." After all, the English explorer who long ago met Aunt Lucy and her husband, Uncle Pastuzo, in the wilds of Peru had happily taken the time to teach them about everything from the joys of human speech to the wonders of marmalade.

Are these people here all so very different?

Finally, a human family does stop long enough to listen to the little bear. Well, actually the kind woman of the family, Mrs. Brown, stops to listen. Her husband, Mr. Brown, doesn't want to get involved and their two children, Jonathan and Judy, aren't all that excited about the delay either.

But the Mrs. can't bear leaving such a lonely little bear at the station on such a blustery, rainy night. She says they should at least take the talking fur ball—whom she cheerfully dubs Paddington—into their home for the night. Then in the morning they could direct him to the right people.

Mr. Brown, who is an insurance assessor, worries over the ramifications, though. Why, bringing a real bear into your home - even a talking one - increases a family's risk of damage by some 4,000%, he tells his wife. Mrs. Brown assures him that, again, it will just be for the night and that's not such a very long time, is it? What could possibly go wrong?

Paddington silently agrees to come, giving them all a “beary” grin. After a night of good rest, he can go padding around the city looking for the English explorer in the morning. And with the Browns' help he'll be certain to find his way. Indeed, what could possibly go wrong?

Well, it seems they're all about to find out in this cinematic adaptation of Englishman Michael Bond's series of children's stories he launched in 1958.

Men’s Ages as Determined by Trips to Home Depot

There’s a need to run to Home Depot™… too bad it is way across town. It depends on age listed below… when you find your world upside down.

The middle of your job incomplete… you are sweaty—covered in dirt. Your shorts have a large hole in the seat… a huge stain spread over your shirt.

In your 20s? Shave, take a shower… brush, floss, run a comb through your hair.

So what if it takes you an hour… cute girls might be your checkers there. Flexing your muscles, smile on your face… might meet the teacher of your son.

Add cologne ‘cause you’re not commonplace… that’s better than when first begun. In your 30s? Get clean shorts, shoes, shirt … wash your hands, check mirror, comb hair.

In case you don’t get off all the dirt… you add cologne to show you care. In your 40s? Let your gut hang out… wrap sweatshirt around; tie, don’t pin.

It will cover short’s hole without doubt... hopefully clerk is next of kin! In your 50s? Wipe hands on your shirt… grab bait-shop cap with “I GOT WORMS”.

Cover short’s hole with cardboard insert… then walk backwards under those terms. In your 60s? The cap states “inept”… You forgot your glasses—here’s clues!

Be more concerned about where you stepped… you’ve now got dog poo on your shoes. Though there’s underwear beneath short’s hole… the young chick gasps, wrinkles her nose.

Impressing the clerk is not your goal… old men come with too many woes. In your 70s? I might have guessed… You could not find the Home Depot™!

You’ve been lost at Walmart™ so distressed… thinking car was towed for repo! A gal brings you back inside the place… says, “Sit here on this comfy stool.”

Suddenly you remember her face… Head cheer leader at old high school! Without glasses you have “conniptions”… when they tell you it’s the wrong place.

You insist. “Where are the prescriptions?” … You retreat, with a bright red face. In your 80s? They ask and yell, “Hey… you know a big hole’s in your shorts?”

The smell of dog poo keeps them away… Oh well, I guess it takes all sorts! We will not go into the 90s… you should not be allowed to roam.

You’re still wearing those shorts with a hole… you’re now kept locked up in the Home!

Life Stories: Featuring Bob Hoyt (Part 1)

The Priest and the Pastor Bob fondly recalls an interesting sight when he was just a young teenager living in the small town of Cambridge Springs, PA. His grandfather, Mortimore “Mort” Clark, was truly a man everyone liked and appreciated. Likewise, the town priest, known as Father Simpson, was very much liked and appreciated by folks and was well-known for his singing voice. Bob said that everyone in town could hear the priest when he was practicing singing while using a microphone, and my…what a beautiful voice he had! Mort’s singing may not have been as outstanding, but he was loved as a preacher and teacher. Actually, Mort spent a good amount of time preaching out of town, like a circuit preacher, and he would sometimes get paid with eggs, or maybe a chicken. Ah, the good

old days. But…back to the point of the story. One-day Bob was walking down the road, past his granddad’s house. He couldn’t help but take notice that on grandpa Mort’s front porch was quite a sight; there sat pastor Mort and Father Simpson and they were laughing, smoking cigars and eating peanuts! It was obvious they were having a

grand ‘ole time. Really makes for an interesting picture in one’s mind! Later in life when Bob grew up and married, he was presented with a very special gift from his priest friend. It was, and still is, a beautiful set of wine bottles and small wine glasses from Italy. The Judge An unfortunate thing happened in Bob’s life after he was grown and married to JoAnn. One particular

week-end had been especially difficult and tiring. You see, Bob was not only a part-owner of a grocery store (which was his main job) but he was also a fire chief, working for the volunteer fire department in Cambridge Springs, PA, where he grew up. He was tired from fighting a very large fire. The place that burned was a plastic foam plant and lasted over two days, so he did not make it to church that Sunday. The following Sunday, he and JoAnn were attending church when, out of the blue, the

preacher (not Bob’s grandfather) looked straight at Bob, and might as well have been pointing his finger at him, and said, “I was talking to a young man recently who said he was just too tired to come to church last Sunday.” After that Bob made sure this particular preacher never saw his face again at church. Much has changed since then. Strange Happenings It is amazing how Bob made the change from part ownership of a food market to maintenance work at the Medical Center in Meadville, PA.

First, we will establish some facts at this time in Bob’s life: 1) The Army was no longer a part of his life; 2) He had ‘hung in there’ with his partner in the food business for 25 years; 3) His health had spiraled downhill, to the point that his doctor said he had to do something different; 4) Bob knew he had to do something different; 5) He now had a large family; and 6) He was still running the emergency truck for the fire department. Bob’s friends were telling him that he should apply for work at the town’s medical center and one friend, in particular, was encouraging Bob to do so because he worked there. Even though Bob could not imagine himself working at the hospital, he applied anyway. Bob and his friend just happen to be out at the same time and place. His friend was picking out a Christmas tree and died of a heart attack right in front of

Bob. The ambulance from the medical center got there quickly with all their equipment, but were not able to save his life. Bob was given his friend’s job. We sometimes do not understand how or why things happen the way they do. Bob said he really enjoyed working there, his health just kept improving and he was there for 14½ years. Eventually Bob became ambitious enough and strong enough that he decided to build his own house to accommodate his large family. Since he certainly wasn’t a contractor and had never built much of anything, he did confide…or maybe I should say asked, a contractor friend for advice if he ran into trouble. This friend let him know and understand that he would not build the house, but only give advice from time to time. The contractor friend did lay the corner stones, but that was all he did physically. It took Bob over four years to finish the house. Before I saw the picture of Bob’s

accomplishment, I was thinking it would be something smaller and architecturally more simplistic. However, when I saw it I thought to myself, “Wow, it looks awesome!” By the way, the house that Bob built also had a good size balcony at the second level which does not show in the artist’s painting. When the house was finished they invited the contractor friend to their “open house”. The contractor took

Bob’s wife, JoAnn, to the side and whispered, “Honestly, I did not think Bob would ever finish this project.”

Getting to Know You

[Editor’s Note: Karen Talley, former editor of the Senior Connection and now a resident of

Sierra Vista, Arizona, was kind enough to share this story with us.]

Huachuca Mountain Storm

It was a dark and stormy night. (This has been called: "The archetypal example of a florid, melodramatic style of fiction writing.") But that night really was dark and stormy! It was the first night of the visit

of my 8-year-old grandson, Jonathan, and the Huachuca Mountains chose that night to serve up one of their namesake displays. (Huachuca is an Apache language term meaning “Thunder Mountain”)

I love these "donner and blitzen" nights! But my young grandson was daunted by this storm's ferocity. To help him feel more comfortable we turned out the lights and opened the dining room curtains, which gave us a 6' by 4' view of the show. I lined up 4 chairs at the window, and there we sat; Jonathan, his mom, his 13-year-old brother, and me.

First, I assured Jonathan that we were very safe from the storm. As we sat there we talked about fireworks shows and how the flashes and booms were very similar to those shows; the difference was that God was putting on this show and it was much more spectacular. At each flash and boom the three of us would shout, "Yea!" or "Wow, that was a big one!" Soon it became obvious to Jonathan that we were having a great time. Slowly he left his mom's lap and took his own seat. I can't recall all the conversation that night, but Jonathan learned that God's handiwork can be both frightening and beautiful. The next day I asked if there were another thunderstorm that night would he want to watch it. His answer - a big smile and a "Yes!" After the family returned to their home in Colorado I was working on my 6K Challenge bible reading, and there it was:

Job 37:1-5 (NIV) “At this my heart pounds and leaps from its place. Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice, to the rumbling that comes from his mouth. He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven and sends it to the ends of the earth. After that comes the sound of his roar; he thunders with his majestic voice. When his voice resounds, he holds nothing back. God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.

And also:

Job 37:23-24 (NIV) The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress. Therefore, people revere him, for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?

Genesis 9:13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me

and the earth.

An Elder’s View

What is in a Name?

We see throughout scripture that names are significant as far as God is concerned. We have several examples of where God names someone or changes their name. Some are given names prior to their birth, as they are designated for a purpose. Others are given a new name when God sets a clear change in direction from which they had been previously walking.

In Acts Saul had his name changed to Paul. As we read through the life of Saul/Paul, we clearly see a change in this man, not from the aspect of his passion, but from his direction and understanding of the will of God.

Genesis 17 describes the changes that took place when Abram’s name was changed to Abraham (from High Father to Father of Multitudes) and when Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah (Mother of Nations). God promised them, because of their faith, that they would take on a new role for all of mankind.

Matthew 16: 13-19 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people

say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say, John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and

others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon

Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed

are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in

heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell

shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you

bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

So, from this passage we see that God does not take the name of someone for granted. This is where I really began my study. In almost every case, we hear people ending their prayers by saying, “In Jesus Name”. Think about it; to close out a request, plea or thankful request to God, we close it by saying “In Jesus Name”. How powerful is the mere name of Christ? The name of Jesus was a directive from God. Matthew 1:21 tells us that an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and told him he was to give the child the name Jesus because he was to bring about salvation to the world. We read in Romans 10:13 that, “…Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” At the beginning of the gospel of John, Jesus is referred to as the “Word”. This is fitting because Jesus was sent to deliver the word to all ends of the earth. John then says in Revelation 1:8, that Jesus is the “Alpha and the Omega”, the beginning and the end. By closing our prayer to God by using Jesus’ name, we are implying that the request offered up to God is aligned with Jesus. If our requests are for personal pride, as seen in many

sports venues, or if our requests are for personal gain, are we then using the name of Jesus for our will instead of His? Therefore, when we make our requests using the name of Jesus, let us offer requests that are aligned with what He came to this earth for. Looking at Jesus Christ, we find He is described in many ways. Each provides us comfort, peace, power and salvation. Here are just a few names attached to the son of God: Almighty One - Alpha and Omega - Advocate - Author and Perfecter of Our Faith - Authority - Bread of Life - Beloved Son of God - Bridegroom - Deliverer - Faithful and True - Good Shepherd - Great High Priest - Head of the Church - Holy Servant - I Am - Immanuel - Indescribable Gift - Judge - King of Kings - Lamb of God - Light of the World - Lord of All - Messiah - Our Hope - Peace - Redeemer - Rock - Savior - Son of Man - The Way - Truth.

If God, through the scriptures, attached the following names to Jesus Christ our Savior, we can trust that He truly is able to do all things.
