Where Have We Been, Where Are We Now, Where Are We Going?

Self-Discovery and Individuality in English 12

We’ll explore the roots, influences, and impressions that have molded us as individuals. What have been the contributing factors to who we are today? How have our decisions shaped us, and how will they continue to do so as we move forward?

We’ll conduct a self-analysis of beliefs, positions, thought basis, platforms. How does one find his or her place in society? What is your truth as an individual?

Knowing what we know about our roots and our present self, we’ll explore the future self—dreams, goals, ambitions. Where do you want to go? What are your aspirations? How are you going to get there?

Reflecting on celebrations, failures, and difficulties can push an individual toward a new awareness. We’ll be trying to achieve this awareness through

Grade 12

Room 209

Fall 2013

…as well as non-fiction, poems, essays, short stories, articles, literary criticism, and more.

GradingThough each assignment will vary in point value, you will be made aware of the value when the assignment is given. Grading will be based upon the following:

Class participation and preparedness

Homework Tests/quizzes Essays and other writing

assignments

Homework PolicyAll assignments are due at the beginning of class. You’re expected to complete all homework assignments on time. No partial credit will be given for unexcused late assignments. If it’s not completed at the start of class, it’s a zero. Major assignments (essays, projects, and so on) will be docked 10% per day late (not per class meeting).

Absences from classIf you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the work. This is very easy:

1. Check the class website. All assignments will be posted the day they are assigned.

2. Email me. I can send an assignment home, answer any questions, etc.

3. Find me. Room 209—before school, before class, after class, anytime.

4. Ask a friend. They should know what’s going on.

There are no excuses when getting missed work is this easy. Don’t ask, “Did I miss anything?” Of course you did. Follow the steps above, stay on track, and you’ll be set.

MaterialsThe things you’ll need to succeed:

Three-ring binder Loose-leaf paper Highlighter

All this AP talk…

This is not the AP Language course just repeated in 12th grade. This is Senior English—same books, same general class

Still have questions?Make an appointment with me, stop by my

room, check the website or email me… you’ve got lots of options!

theme as your peers. The only difference is simply your having the option to take the AP Lang exam in May (whether or not you’ve taken it in the past).

What are the benefits of taking the AP exam?

College credit. Depending on your college of choice, you score high enough on the AP, you earn credits (for much cheaper than what you’ll be paying next year).

Learn 2 Write Good. It’s a skill you’ll need for the rest of your life. Let’s refine and improve it now before you leave VHS for the (dun dun dunnn) “real world.”

Rigor. Hard work pays off—you’re more than capable of this college-level work. What better way to get you prepared for college?
