Graduation! The Wilson Memorial High School graduating Class of 2011 would like to invite their families and friends to celebrate with them in a Baccalaureate Service on Sunday, 5/29 at 7:00 PM at the Blue Ridge Church of Christ. Straight From the Career Coach Exciting things are happening this spring at WMHS! Seniors are busy waiting the final word from colleges and universities, and their parents are eager to receive financial aid package information. For those Seniors who have not made a formal decision on where they will be headed after high school, I am planning a trip to Blue Ridge Community College on Wednesday, 4/20 during first and second blocks. We will be touring the campus, learning about all of the degree and certificate programs that are offered, as well as discussing how to enroll and schedule classes. There will also be employers on hand to discuss how seniors can increase their chances of landing a high paying job after graduation. If your student is interested, please have them stop by to ask to be included on this trip, or email me at [email protected] . Soon thereafter, I am working with our Guidance Department and Virginia Cooperative Extension to coordinate a budgeting simulation known as “Reality Store.” The entire sophomore class will take part in this event. Students will jump into their future to live for one month as a 26 year old with a career (including a realistic salary), family responsibilities (they may be married and/or have children). They will have to stretch their monthly income as they make choices about housing, transportation, clothing, entertainment...even whether or not to donate to charity! This activity is happening on Friday, 4/29. Parents, we would love to have you join us this day to staff a booth and help our students make solid financial decisions. Dear Parents, Once again, the WMHS After-Prom Committee will be hosting a celebration following Prom on April 30. This is a huge endeavor, with an estimated cost of $6,000 to provide the facilities, entertainment, food, activities, prizes and monetary incentives for students who stay for the entire event. Please help us to provide our students with an alcohol and drug-free environment that will help to ensure their safety and the safety of our community. Any donation will be greatly appreciated, and every cent goes to the students. We will also gladly accept donations of beverages for the actual event, as well as tickets, coupons, gift certificates or merchandise to give to the students in the form of prizes or the end-of-evening goodie bags. All donations are tax deductible. We ask that you send your monetary and/or other contributions to the school, or make arrangements to have items picked up by a committee member by April 1, 2011. CAMP WILSON FOR UPCOMING FRESHMAN Help your student get off to a great start to high school by attending Camp Wilson to be held on Tuesday, 7/26 and Wednesday, 7/27 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Camp Wilson is a wonderful opportunity for all incoming freshman. During the two day course we will give them campus tours, lockers, possibly schedules, and introduce them to the administration. The introduction to the high school lifestyle and the freedoms and choices that come with it create a new challenge for young adults entering Wilson Memorial High School. Our goal is to ease this transition for the kids and allow them to create relationships with the administration, camp counselors, teachers, and guidance for them to be successful. We would also like any upper class students who would like to volunteer to assist in the Camp to contact Mr. Grove so that they can contribute to this wonderful experience and the new faces entering our school. Straight From the Library
WMHS library will celebrate National Library Week April 10-16, with this year’s theme of “Create your own story @ your library.” During the week, the library will hold daily drawings from all students who have signed into the library that day. Winners will receive a coupon for food at Sheetz or McDonalds. On Thursday, 4/14, a representative from the Augusta County Library will be here during all three lunch blocks to sign up students for library cards. Remember that a library card gives access to the Staunton and Waynesboro libraries as well as the ACL. It’s a great deal! There has been a real increase in database use by students to locate credible information for their papers and projects. Just a reminder: ALL students at WMHS have access to Gale databases and World Book online from school and remotely from home. Simply go to the WMHS homepage, choose “Library” at the top, and then “Databases.” The Gale databases password is “augusta” and the World Book user name and password are “augusta1” and “worldbook”. Please don’t forget that the library continues to collect used printer and inkjet cartridges for recycling. The funds we receive go towards purchasing more library materials. Blood Drive News!

We hope you support and encourage your child’s decision to donate blood. He or she is showing civic responsibility, maturity and a sense of community pride by donating. Blood donation is a safe procedure using single use sterile supplies. It is normally a pleasant experience, and drinking plenty of fluids and eating well prior to donation can reduce donor reactions. The donation process may occasionally cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, tenderness, bruising, bleeding, nerve damage, or even infection at the site. State law allows 16 year olds to donate blood with written permission by a parent or guardian. All students donating at WMHS will be required to have a completed permission form.

From the Guidance Desk Course Selections: 2011-2012
Guidance counselors are completing registrations for all students for the 2011-12 school year. Final course selections will be based on completion of courses, plans after high school, and the fulfillment of graduation requirements. You will receive a letter with the fifth 6 weeks report card listing the courses that have been selected. Please make any changes or indicate the requests are acceptable, and return the form to the Guidance Office as soon as possible. The deadline is Friday, 5/13. Due to budget constraints & reduction in staff, NO CHANGES will be made after the 5/13 deadline.

What an exhilarating year it has been for our school’s National Honor Society group! It saddens me that the year is nearly over, but we have accomplished so much. Although the other officers and senior members of the group will soon be on their own paths, I am confident that the Woodrow Wilson chapter of NHS will continue to do great things even after we’re gone! Here’s the buzz on what has happened—and what will happen—inside NHS for our 2011 year: On Wednesday, 2/16, we met in the library to hear a very motivational and influential speaker, Mrs. Sandy Powell. Mrs. Powell is currently identified as the fastest endurance runner in the United States and has been running ultra-marathons (marathons that are farther than the traditional 42 kilometers) for more than twenty years. During her speech she mentioned that while running takes up the majority of her time, it is certainly not her “life.” Outstandingly, she manages a full-time
job as a teacher for children with emotional/psychological disabilities at a therapeutic school. When asked about her inspirations for both her job and devotion to endurance running, Mrs. Powell mentioned that her mother was diagnosed with cancer several years back, and Relay for Life proved to be a perfect outlet for her athletic ability and yearning to help others with life-threatening conditions as well. While admitting that she “wasn’t a really good student” in high school, she told us how her perseverance in running and overall charitable spirit wound up leading her back to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Education. “If I could do it, anyone can!” she enthusiastically preaches. Mrs. Powell is planning on breaking a running world record and is planning to complete a cross-continental run to raise money for children with various disabilities. Way to go, Mrs. Powell! She has proved herself to be a terrific example of service, leadership, scholarship, and citizenship to the United States and our school. We couldn’t have asked for a better embodiment of such NHS-worthy spirit!
NHS has two upcoming Group Service activities:
A club-day visit to Wilson Elementary will occur during our club block on Wednesday, 4/20, and we will be reading stories to classes, assisting children with homework assignments, chatting with a few students during lunch, and enjoying some inner-child nostalgia by playing with the kids during “recess” time.
A full-day visit to both Wilson Middle School and the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center will occur on Friday, 5/27. At the middle school, we will be conducting a morale booster for the excellent faculty and staff by giving them free car washes in the parking lot. After we have finished washing cars, we are going to head on over to the local Rehab Center and assist both patients and caregivers with much-needed socializing and chore completions. This activity not only benefits them, however….if you are interested in someday becoming a doctor, nurse, occupational or physical therapist, or any other career in the medical field, this could be a very opportune shadowing/mentorship opportunity, too!
Concluding our year is the final Gold Cord Ceremony, currently scheduled for Wednesday, 5/25 at 7:00 PM at the Woodrow Wilson Library Gardens in Staunton. Each member is expected to attend, and special attention will be paid to honor our senior members and officers. The ceremony will be outdoors, as it always has been, with chairs provided. An alternative location will soon be announced in case of inclement weather. Upon the start of the ceremony, each senior member will be called (alphabetically by last name) to rise from their seat and stand beside the officers. They will be garnished with a long, golden cord around his/her neck and will have a brief “moment of glory” when time is allotted for friends and/or family to get their pictures taken alongside that senior and our newly-elected officers will share a few little-known tidbits about each senior. Forms will be passed out to the seniors a few weeks in advance and need to be completed as soon as possible. To our group members—if you have any questions regarding upcoming events, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]. I will also be sending intermittent updates and changes to our plans through e-mail as well, so be sure to check your Inbox when it is close to an important activity date. And remember….although NHS is on hiatus in the summertime, the qualities that enabled you to become a part of NHS will continue to benefit your life. Make good decisions, treat others well….and equally important, have a FANTASTIC summer!

WMHS Ruriteens
The WMHS Ruriteens have been busy with community service projects and fundraisers the past few months.
The Coat Drive resulted in 104 coats being donated to the Valley Mission for needy families of the Shenandoah Valley in November.
During the Christmas Season the Ruriteens were able to raise 745 pounds worth of non-perishable items for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
In the Spring semester, the Ruriteens kicked off a Tupperware Fundraiser from March 16- April 4 to aid in their community service projects. Thank you to all who contributed to this fundraiser!
On Saturday, 5/7, the members of Ruriteens will also be conducting a Car Wash at the Fishersville Preston Yancey Fire Department. Please come out and support the organization that continuously gives back to the community!

March Into Careers!
Every first Wednesday of each month, the WMHS Faculty sponsors a TEAM Activity Day. The theme for March was career and skill sets needed for students after graduation. The month-long focus kicked off with a Career Fair in the new gym of the school during Homeroom. Students were able to visit the booths of 45 local businesses to learn about future occupations available in the Shenandoah Valley region. They also collected signatures from those vendors to play BINGO and receive door prizes throughout the day. Continuing through the rest of the month, every Monday the WMTV News aired four videos related to the career search. They included a skit on “What To Do and What Not To Do in an Interview,” the opportunities at Valley Vocational and Technical Center, and finally the opportunities through the Augusta County Mentorship Program as preparation for future careers. In addition, students could answer weekly career-related questions, and the winners of those questions also received door prizes donated from local businesses.
Relay for Life News
WMHS has worked very hard to help to raise funds for the Relay for Life event in May. Through various fund raisers teachers, TSA, the math department, and other hard working volunteers we have exceeded our goal of $2,500 to raise over $3170.65. We hope to continue to raise funds to reach $5,000 by the Relay event on Friday, 5/13. We are currently holding a raffle for a handmade oak mantle clock. Our very own Matt Haskins crafted this clock for us. It is on display in the glass case outside the school office. Tickets are $4 each or 3 for $10. Please see Jay Singleton or Sarah Miller for ticket information. You may buy a luminary bag to donate in honor or in memory of someone. Suggested donation for a white bag is $10 and for a gold bag is $25. Bags will be available until Relay weekend (Friday, 5/13 - Saturday, 5/14) and at the Relay event. They will be lit shortly after dusk at the Relay event. See Mr. Singleton or Mrs. S. Miller to get one.
WMHS Class Olympics 2011!!!
What you ask is CLASS OLYMPICS 2011? It’s the latest and greatest in field days and spring flings! On Friday, 5/13, the WMHS Student Council will be hosting the First Annual 2011 Class Olympics. That’s right. We are going to have one more opportunity for the classes to compete for the spirit stick. There will be a variety of competitions, activities, and fun opportunities for students to socialize, compete, and relax with their friends and classmates. It’s free, so everyone will attend the Olympics. We will have live bands, competitions to earn spirit chips, food, and much more. Clubs will be sponsoring food and drink booths as fundraisers. There will also be a dunking booth to cool off some willing teachers, dance-off competitions, tug-of-war between classes, fast-pitch competition, truck-push competition, various field activities (bocce ball, corn hole, sack races, Frisbees, ladder ball, etc), an obstacle course, and a bounce house! The SCA is super excited to offer this last opportunity to unwind before SOLs and exams and to build relationships before summer vacation! Bring on the fun and games!

Chorus News
Congratulations to Ladd Elementary, Hugh K. Cassell Elementary, Wilson Elementary, Wilson Middle, and Wilson Memorial High School for their successful joint concert on Saturday, 4/2. We had a wonderful turnout and the performances were amazing! Although admission was free, Tri-M (WMHS' music honor society) accepted donations for our charity project "Playing for Change". We were able to raise a little over $300.00 which is a wonderful jump start to this project. Thanks to everyone who participated and for our supportive community! Congratulations to Jackie Kania who will be participating in the State Chorus April 28-30. The Chorus Spring Concert is Sunday, 5/15 at 3:00 PM in the auditorium. The concert is free so please come join us!
Annual Jazz Social The Wilson Jazz Band will host its Tenth Annual Jazz Social in the WMHS Cafeteria on Saturday, 5/7 at 7:00 PM. There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, dessert, dancing, and great music. The cost is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids 12 and under. Come and support the music program!
2011 Virginia Index of Performance Award
Governor Bob McDonnell and the Board of Education announced that 728 schools and nine school divisions earned 2011 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement. The incentive program, which was created by the Board of Education in 2007, recognizes schools and divisions that achieve excellence goals and far exceed minimum state and federal accountability standard. Wilson Memorial High School earned the 2011 Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award for having met all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and is making progress toward the goals of the governor and the board. Dr. Shifflett, principal, stated: “The success at WMHS is credited to the dedicated teachers and students who work hard to do their best each and every day. It is an honor to be recognized for our excellence as we prepare students for the world after high school as productive community members”.

Students will not be allowed to have charges on their lunch accounts after Friday, 4/29. All outstanding balances must be paid by Friday, 5/6.

Straight from the Clinic!
Welcome to the end of another school year with a few reminders from the Clinic. If you have ANY medication in the clinic, please have a parent come by and pick up by Thursday, 6/9. After 6/9/2011, ALL medications will be discarded. Letters will be sent home as a reminder. For the 2011-2012 school year, any student with a health care plan will have forms sent home to have physician complete by the beginning of the school year. Please try to have in by the first week of school so all health care plans can be completed and signed by September. New medication forms will be sent home in May as well. If medications need to be given at school for the 2011-2012 school year, please have the medication and the completed medication administration form to the clinic by the first day of school. Any students that need to carry an epi-pen or inhaler should check in with the nurse the first day of school as well with their inhaler. All forms can also be found on the WMHS web site under Health News and Updates. This year our staff recommitted themselves to wellness. We had 19 staff members participate in the Wilson Memorial High School Biggest Loser Contest. Staff members lost over 160 pounds together! Mr. Baraclough was our overall winner, with Mrs. Larner in second and Mrs. Lilley placing third. Congratulations to all the participants. In addition, we also continued our Humming Hornet exercise incentive for staff. Staff members recorded amount of time of participation in physical activity ranging from shoveling snow, biking, aerobics etc. Each month names were place in a container and a winner drawn for a prize. Events were also held on Saturday, 3/5 to help raise money for Relay for Life. Thanks to all those who supported our fundraising efforts. Members will be attending Technosphere 2011 in Chantilly on 4/28-5/1. Best of luck to all those who are competing!
FCCLA News! The next several months FCCLA will be very busy. In April, at our meeting, we had a guest speaker from March of Dimes to talk about “March for Babies” to be held at Augusta Health on Saturday, 4/30. Our FCCLA chapter will have a team to represent Wilson, which we have represented well in the past few years. We will be collecting money in our third block classes to donate towards March of Dimes. At our April meeting we also recognized those dedicated members who have been a part of several FCCLA sponsored projects. Sadly, we say good-bye to four of our senior officers: Tori Amato, Hannah Shields, Cheyenne Benson, and Ashleigh Harris. They have led our chapter well and we are sad to see them go. We wish them well on their future endeavors!
Go Green Club! Our Go Green Club has been working hard to increase the amount of recycling we do here at WMHS. With some funds raised earlier, we purchased some bins for teachers to collect plastic bottles and paper. Together we have worked with WMS, WES, Augusta County central offices, and WWRC to recycle a great amount and save it from going into our landfill. We have also donated money to maintain a portion of the rainforest in Brazil. Students in the club obtained information about different areas and decided that the money would go to the rainforest. Due to the hard work of these folks on the complex we have won a special award. Woodrow Wilson Complex Recycling Program has won a Silver Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award! This award is quite an achievement and speaks highly of what people can accomplish when working together! A plaque will be awarded to the folks in charge of this program at the Environment Virginia Symposium at VMI.
CLUB NEWS
Tri-M
Wilson Memorial High School's music honor society, Tri-M, will be hosting its annual induction ceremony and "pot luck-style" dinner for members and their families on Tuesday, 5/24. Students in the Tri-M club will receive an invitation with specific details about the event near the beginning of the month.

Staunton Augusta Art Center Display
The following WMHS students will have their art work on display at the Staunton Augusta Art Center in downtown Staunton now through Thursday, 4/7. Congratulations to:

The opening reception was on Sunday, 2/27. The center is located on New Street in Staunton. This exhibit is in celebration of March, which is Youth Art Month.
Art News
The Richmond “Art” field trip is Friday, 4/29. Students will be going to the Virginia Museum of Fine Art to view a once in a lifetime exhibit featuring 176 works by Pablo Picasso. They are very excited about going. We usually go to Roanoke to the Taubman Museum for our spring trip, but couldn’t pass up an opportunity to see Picasso.
Also, ten art students will have the opportunity to go to JMU for “Art Day” on Sunday, 5/13. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience a day creating art with JMU graduate students as instructors. Students will pack a lunch and spend the entire day in art workshops making art.
WMHS Art Club and the National Art Honor Society have met several times to create hemp jewelry as a fund raiser for our sculpture garden, opening spring of 2012. It will be located outside the art rooms and we hope to reward art students with passes to eat lunch outside on picnic tables in warm weather. We hope to acquire our first piece of sculpture for the garden by 2012 as well.
The WMHS Art Club has also created a video for recruiting club members for next year. We hope lots of students will view the video.
Last, the Staunton Augusta Art Center’s Youth Art Month art exhibit closed on Sunday, 4/3. The following students had an opportunity to have their work on display: Cassie Engstrom, Kerri Krabbenhoft, Rachel Daley, Drew Cook, Elizabeth Mansfield, and Ellery Beellendorf. Congratulations to them!
The Rotary Code of Ethics Winners
The Rotary Code of Ethics Award is presented to one male high school senior and one female high school senior. This award is voted on by their peers from the Senior Class and honors these two students with the following characteristics: ethics, moral character, service, and fairness. The winners of the Rotary Code of Ethics Awards are Domenic Puzio and Ariel Harper. Congratulations!

Valley Vo-Tech Horticulture Department
Valley Tech announces its Spring Plant Sale Schedule and hope you plan to stop by and see what plants the students have been growing for your garden. They are open every school day from 9:30-11:00 AM and from 12:30-2:30 PM but will be closed for Spring break Friday, 4/22 thru Monday, 4/25.

Other major medical issues currently being treated by a physician If a member of the medical staff disqualifies your child from participation, it is due to concern for your child’s safety and wellbeing. This is not open to discussion. WMHS will refund your $20.00 payment. Please follow up with your regular physician.

MANDATORY AP Meeting! There will be a meeting on Tuesday, 4/26 for all students interested in taking English 11AA, any Advanced Placement class at WMHS, and English 12 Dual Enrollment next year. A parent is requested to attend also. There are several reasons for requesting both student and parent to attend this important meeting.
Teachers (with the exception of Ms. Rose) will be introduced.
The meaning of “dual enrollment” and “advanced placement” will be explained.
The cost of advanced placement exams will be communicated.
Summer assignments and materials will be distributed.
The date, assignment, and materials for the English 11AA and AP History placement tests will be distributed.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM in the auditorium. Introductions and general comments will be made there. Students and parents will then be divided into groups based on the classes they are interested in taking. This is a mandatory meeting for any student interested in any of these classes. A parent must accompany their student.

AM to 4:00 PM. The date for the evening fee collection and Freshmen Orientation will be Tuesday,
8/16.

Yearbook price is now selling at the discounted price of $70.00 thru Saturday, 7/23. It then goes up to its regular price of $75.00. Distribution is in early August! Seniors will have their yearbooks mailed to their
