SENIOR NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY 2014
Message from Mrs Sales
Welcome back to all staff members, parents and students! I am privileged and hum-
bled by the opportunity to be principal of the senior school. Thank you to Mrs Gous
who has been very gracious and supportive during the hand-over period. Together
with the new management team of the senior school (Mrs van Zyl, Ms Stoop and Mrs
Tuniz) and the senior school staff, we are hoping to make 2014 an unforgettable year!
We welcome:
Mrs Schult who is teaching English and RE . Anke Jacobs who is
coaching water-polo, diving, learn to swim and netball. She has a de-
gree in sport psychology. At present she is the Protea water polo goal-
keeper. She recently participated for South Africa at the Common-
wealth Games. All our new Grade 8, 9 and 10 learners.
We thank Mrs Marland for coming in to teach Speech and Drama for the first term.
We wish you all a long and happy association with the St Dominic’s Family!
The following poem reminds each of us that the most important day is today. We have
to remember that we have today, and can only change today as it unfolds. We can
prepare ourselves by thinking the positive today. There are not too many things that
can’t be fixed; we must accept what can and what cannot be fixed. If today is to be,
then it is up to me to make it happen.
Just For Today Just for today I will be happy and smile at everyone.
Just for today I will try to give my mind more strength and knowledge.
Just for today I will take care of my physical self and I will also look after my spiritual self and
serve God who is the head of all.
Just for today I will try to lend a helping hand to someone who needs help and will take time to
remember that I have countless blessings.
Just for today I will remember that I have everything I need and many things I want.
Just for today I will not let anything upset me.
Just for today I will not be discouraged. I will have faith in everything and set an example.
Just for today I will not think negative thoughts, and if they come, I will change what I am
thinking.
Just for today I will tell someone that I love them.
Just for today I will let my mind believe the impossible. I will embrace today as if there is no
tomorrow.
Just for today I will forget and forgive so that I can be forgiven.
Just for today I will be at peace with all humanity and will pray for peace in our Nation.
Just for today I will not complain about anything. I will accept what life brings, though I may
not understand, because I know that God has a plan and I’m sure His plan is for my own good. (An extract taken from the Catholic Schools Office Newsletter)

Grade 8 Camp Discovery
On Sunday 12th of January, an excited and nervous bunch of
grade 8’s climbed onto buses and headed to Camp Discovery,
where we spent 2 eventful nights. Here we went on a game
drive, battled our way through obstacles, got covered in mud,
participated in team
building activities, worked in groups to make the
best chicken potjie we could, using the few cook-
ing skills we had and most importantly we made
new friendships. The motivational movie we
watched called ‘No arms, No legs,”
gave us all something to think
about.
The Grade 8’s would like to thank Mev Van Zyl, the Grade 8 teachers and
the Top 9 Matrics for organising the camp and making it so much fun.
Stop Hunger Now
On Saturday, 8 February, Mrs Ross accompanied by 12 Grade 8, 9
and 10 girls worked at the ‘Stop Hunger Now’ warehouse in Germis-
ton. Together with members of the public and a number of other
schools a record number of 30 000 meals were packed. These meals
consist of vitamins, soya, rice and dried vegetables. The meals are
distributed monthly to crèches in informal settlements. Stop Hunger
Now is not a feeding scheme but its goal is to eradicate child hunger.
Funds are desperately needed for this organisation and we ask for our gen-
erous St Dominic’s parents to collect all their brown money and small
change and pass this on to Mrs Ross, who will make sure it reaches the
organisers.
Mr Loring, our Headmaster, was proud to attend the
Awards Breakfast held by PMR Africa on the 2nd of
December 2013. The awards were based on an
independent random sample survey from 150
CEO’s, MD’s, business owners and company direc-
tors conducted by PMR for the Ekurhuleni Metro.
St Dominic’s were very proud when they received
the Silver Arrow Award with a rating of ‘Very Good
for Private Schools 2013’. This award was made in
the Leaders and Achievers Category for companies
and institutions doing most in their sector over the
past 12 months to stimulate the economic growth
and development of Ekurhuleni.
Eurotour 2015

minded that we are plan-
ning a Eurotour for

About Colour Blind Faith
OCASIONALLY IN THE AFFAIRS OF MEN there appears a giant who drastically im-proves the lives of all he meets; a colossus who during a lifetime achieves what oth-ers dream of doing in an eternity; a leviathan whose presence is a joy and inspiration to all who share it. An ordinary, likeable, friendly man who without any particularly ob-vious talents, simply gets on with things to astonishing effect. Such a man was Irish Franciscan friar, Father Stan Brennan.
Colour Blind Faith recounts the life of Father Stan, whose dogged resistance to the might of the South African apartheid machine brought comfort and opportunity that would otherwise have been little more than another distressing statistic in the coun-try's roll of dishonour.
Told in an accessible and engaging way, Father Stan's life stands as a role model for every person who feels disempowered in today's world, or who is tempted to fall back on the excuse that one person can never make a difference. Colour Blind Faith gives the lie to that attitude, and everyone who reads this remarkable story will be motivated to give a little more, to achieve a little more.
Today's 'enemies' may not be as brutal or omnipresent as apartheid, but the power of faith and the human spirit to effect change is as relevant in every corner of our mod-ern world as it was in the South Africa of the 70s and 80s. David Gemmell is a writer and editor. He wrote the bestselling biography of Joost van der Westhuizen, The Man in the Mirror.
'I just loved this big teddy bear of a man with the huge smile and, as it turned out, very big heart.' TOKYO SEXWALE, ANTI-APARTHEID ACTIVIST, BUSINESSMAN AND POLITICIAN
