Senior of the Month By RICK RUDDEN

[email protected]

Watch out for that twinkle.

It’s there. Look close. The one in Earl Lindstrom’s eye.

The Carney resident puts it to good use. It shows up

once in awhile when he’s reminiscing about his time in

the Army, or sometimes when he’s talking about all his

years in the lumberyard, or growing up on the family

farm. But it’s always there when he’s talking about one

particular subject: his wife of almost 59 years, Lillian.

It’s funny how the little twists and turns in life can

change a person’s life. Take Earl and Lillian. If Earl and a couple buddies didn’t have a hankering for

smelt in 1956, he and Lillian would have never met. Yep, there’s that twinkle. Earl and his friends were

headed to the Days River near Gladstone, and stopped for a bite to eat at Skinny’s Bar. “We had a bite

to eat, and maybe a drink. I don’t know (insert twinkle),” Earl said. Now he’s not even sure if they ever

went smelting on that day. One thing he is sure about, though, is that’s the day he met Lillian. She was

also getting lunch at Skinny’s.

They talked. He gave her a ride home and asked her out on a date. “We’ve had a whole lot of dates ever

since,” he said. The rest, as they say, is history.

Earl quit school when he was 16 to work on the family farm. No mechanical plows back then, so that’s

when he started his long, positive relationship with horses. “When you plowed with horses, they pulled

the plow around. But when they got stuck in rocks, you pulled the horses back.”

He said that was the exact moment he adopted a philosophy he has put to good use his entire life: “I got

it in my head that you just got to get to work and get the job done.”

He lived his entire life in Carney except for the two years he spent in the Army after getting drafted in

1951. “I got a letter of invitation from President Truman,” he said. Twinkle time.

He spent 18 months in Germany, and fell in love with the country and the people.

After his stint in the Army he started working in lumberyards, first as a sawyer, then a head sawyer and

retired 32 years later as sawmill foreman. He still gets a little poetic about the work. “Each log is a differ-

ent story,” he said. He retired in 1982. “I just got tired of getting up and going to work.”

His wife, Lillian, was a nurse during her working life. Now she and Earl have gone through a bit of a role

reversal. He’s helping her through a few health problems. “Without it, I could never stay home,” she said.

He also does all the cooking. Also, he men-

tions in passing, that he goes to church every

Sunday.

In summer, Earl gets nutrition and exercise

working the garden. “In winter I gained a cou-

ple inches. I want to lose that, but have to wait

until I start bending over in the garden.” Straw-

berries are his favorites.

He also enjoyed deer hunting back when it

meant walking in the woods. No sitting by a

bait pile. He said he and fellow hunters “would

chase deer out of the woods, and then you

have high-speed beef.” Twinkle-time, again.

NUTRITION AND YOU

Escanaba Senior Center Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Happy March. Hope you all survived our brutal Febru-

ary! We had tons of fun here at the Center, and hope

to be able to see you soon. We’ve had a lot of new

seniors join us for lunch, and our group is growing.

We are happy to have you here.

We are adding Laughter Yoga to our calendar, led by

Christine Pada, a licensed Laughter Yoga specialist.

It’s proven to improve not only your

outlook on life, but your breathing and

relaxation as well. An all-around activ-

ity, we hope to see you for our first full

session on Friday, March 25, begin-

ning at 11. There will be a nominal fee

to help pay Chris’ transportation cost.

At the present time, it will be $5 per

person. This may end up being lower

on the date of the event.

We have several events coming up,

the first is our St. Patty’s day Party March 17. Wear

your favorite green, and be the best leprechaun in

the bunch! Gathering at 11, goodies at 11:30, lunch

at noon with corned beef and cabbage.

This will be followed by our Easter Dinner Wednes-

day, March 23, and our Birthday Dinner Thursday,

March 31. Our bake sale will also be March 31, so

we hope you are able to contribute to

the baked goods to sell. All proceeds

benefit programs provided by the cen-

ter.

DATA Bus trip to Marquette will be on

Saturday, March 12. Call the Center to

reserve your seat. Pre-payment of $10

required. Deadline to register is Mon-

March 2016 Newsletter

Menominee Senior Center Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

I can’t believe we are

marching into the third

month of 2016 already.

That means we are even

closer to spring. March is

“National Nutrition Month.”

Why not celebrate by trying

one of our nutritious

meals? Our senior center

kitchen will be whipping up

some amazing meals this

month. We hope you take a

look at our menu and find a meal that appeals to your

liking and join us. The Senior Nutrition Program goal

is to ensure seniors do not go without a balanced

meal. Suggested donation for our meals is $3 for sen-

iors age 60 and over and their spouses. Guests under

60 are welcome to attend, but must pay $7 per meal.

There are no dishes to do, and tipping isn’t allowed. I

think that it is a pretty good deal, don’t you?

Our monthly digital camera/computer two-day class is

set for Tuesday, March 15, and Tuesday, March 22,

from 1-4 p.m. This month’s classes will “focus” on

photo editing using Photoshop Elements. Students

are asked to bring in their laptops for hands-on in-

struction. This course is $25 per person and preregis-

tration is necessary.

Our first party of March is our St. Patrick’s Day Party

on Thursday, March 17. Shenanigans will begin about

11:30 a.m., followed by a corned beef dinner served

at noon. After lunch, we will have entertainment by

the “Two Tones.” Dance to the music or just sit and

enjoy the songs you know by heart. Preregistration is

required for the dinner, but the entertainment is open

to anyone.

Our Craft Day is set for 1 p.m. Monday, March 21. We

will be making eggs made of yarn and glue. Bring a

friend for some messy fun. No preregistration re-

quired and is free to anyone wanting to play with us.

Join us for an “egg-cellent” time at our Easter Dinner

Wednesday, March 23. The party hatches at 11:30

a.m. with a ham dinner served at noon. Everyone will

pick an egg for a chance to win a door prize. Please

reserve your seat in advance.

The movie day this month is Tuesday, March 29. We

will begin the movie at 12:45p.m. This month’s show-

ing is “The Martian” starring Matt Damon. Free pop-

corn, soda and candy.

Our “Monthly Birthday Party and Salad Bar” day is

Thursday, March 31. Salad bar begins approximately

11:30 a.m. and dinner served at noon. One lucky

March birthday person will receive a small floral bou-

quet compliments of the center. Please call and re-

serve your seat at least a day in advance.

Many of you are calling about your Homestead or

Home Heating Credits. I will be taking appointments

to assist you. Appointments are necessary so I can

help you with your taxes yet still run the daily opera-

tions of the center. If you need help filling them out,

please take the time to get your paperwork together

and then call for an appointment. The forms do not

take very long to fill out if you have all the information

at hand.

It will be a busy month for parties. Larger parties

mean less parking. Remember, we do have a bus ser-

vice to get you to and from our events. Just call at

least a day in advance to schedule your ride.

It is March folks, and if weather comes in like a lamb,

and goes out like a lion, the center could experience

days when we close for business. If we do have to

make that judgment call, we do alert radio stations in

Menominee, and the local television stations to get

the word out. For those receiving in-home services,

we make every attempt to contact everyone person-

ally to let them know. As always, use caution and

safety first when venturing out in winter weather.

Hang in there as spring is on its way!

Toodles!

Celebrate Women’s

History Month March is national “Women’s History

Month.” Do you have any famous fe-

males in your family tree? If you have

a story you would like to share or a

photo, we would love to hear about it. They could be

famous or infamous, but if and you would like to

share, please do. We will set aside a bulletin board

for any photos or stories you would like us to post.

Your famous female could be the first in town to

have a driver’s license or the first on the moon.

Even if you’re not sure if the story is historically ac-

curate, we would love to hear it.

We will be sharing your stories and photos at the

Monthly Birthday Party. If you would like to tell your

own story, please attend that day’s meal. For those

of you who are a bit shy, you can submit your story

to Renelle before March 21 and she can read it to

Women’s Day.

HOMESTEAD and HOME HEATING CREDITS

Tax season is once again upon us. I can assist you

with your simple tax credits such as the Michigan

Homestead or Michigan Home Heating Credit. If you

are low-income and do not have to file any other fed-

eral tax forms, these credits could lead to a refund.

If you would like to make an appointment to see if

you qualify, please gather these items together to

bring to the appointment:

Proof of income from Social Security or any other

sources of income to claim such as rental properties

or pensions, annuities, etc. Proof of income is re-

quired for either credit.

For Homestead Credit, I need to know the taxable

value of the homestead and the total amount of

taxes you paid for in 2015. For those who don’t own

but rent, I would need to know the amount of rent

you paid in 2015, and the landlord’s name and ad-

dress.

For Home Heating Credit, I need to know what you

paid for heating expenses from Nov. 1, 2014,

through Oct. 31, 2015. You can ask your utility pro-

vider for a print out, or bring in all of your bills from

that time period.

To help you get the credits you deserve, sometimes

we can deduct the amount you paid for health insur-

ance premiums. So, if you have paid for health insur-

ance premiums, bring proof of that, too.

If you have issues I don’t feel comfortable with, I will

ask you to seek a professional tax preparer. Other-

wise, attaining these credits could cost you an un-

wanted expense at an accounting firm. I am a tax

volunteer who doesn’t charge for the paperwork or

prep time. Call to set up an appointment if you are in

need of my assistance.

MEDICARE MINUTES Question: What do I do if my medications are not

on my formulary for my part D plan?

You have a few options to remedy this situation:

1) You can ask your doctor if there is something

similar that he/she could prescribe that your plan

accepts.

2) You can see if a patient assistance program

could assist you until you can compare and change

plans in the fall.

3) Sometimes, your plan will allow the medication to

be covered if there is prior authorization. Again, your

doctor will need to be involved to assist with that.

4) Call your local MMAP counselor and set up an

appointment. We can assist you with the process to

help you get the medications you

need.

It’s All About Person to Person…

That's the essence of a Senior Companion in action: Giving the same kind of boost that usually comes from a friend. Joking over a cup of coffee as well as offering a ride to

the doctor, picking up prescriptions or doing some light grocery shopping.

Talking about old times. Senior Companions help ease loneliness. Senior Companions do not replace other workers.

Who are Senior Companions? They are selected adults age 55 and above who help certain adults, in-cluding developmentally disabled or mentally ill adults in foster care facilities, assisted living homes,

Hermansville Senior Center UPCAP’s free Diabetes PATH (Personal Action To-wards Health) workshop will begin April 20. The work-shop helps people living with daily challenges of dia-betes to attain skills and tools needed to improve their health and manage their symptoms. Two trained lead-ers conduct the workshop (one or both also live with diabetes). Subjects covered include symptoms of dia-betes, stress, managing fatigue and emotional prob-lems, exercise, healthy eating, medications, and work-ing with health care providers.

The six-week class will meet on Wednesday morn-ings, from 9-11:30, beginning on April 20

h and ending

May 25. Pre registration is required; family and care-givers are welcome. Refreshments will be provided and those who complete the program will receive a grocery gift card. Please call the Senior Center at 498-7735 or dial 2-1-1 to register. For more information, visit www.upcap.org.

pencils are provided for you along with many coloring pages. These pages are of flowers, birds, African wild-

life, North American wildlife, cats, dogs, and sea life. Stop down and check this fun activity.

Alzheimer’s Speaker An expert will speak at the center 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, on the subject of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer's is not the only cause of memory loss.

Many people have trouble with memory — this does NOT mean they have Alzheimer's. There are many dif-

ferent causes of memory loss. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of dementia, it is best to

visit a doctor so the cause can be determined.

Come join us for this informational talk on Alzheimer’s. The information could be helpful to you or a loved

one .

Medicare Moment Medicare Summary Notice

What is it? It’s not a bill. It’s a notice that people

with Original Medicare get in the mail every three

months for their Medicare Part A and B covered ser-

vices. The Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) shows

all your services or supplies that providers and sup-

pliers billed to Medicare during the three-month pe-

riod, what Medicare paid, and the maximum amount

you may owe the provider.

When should I get it? You’ll get your MSN every

three months if you get any services or medical sup-

plies during that three-month period. If you don't get

any services or medical supplies during that three-

month period you won’t get an MSN for that particu-

lar three-month period.

What should I do if I get this notice? If you have

other insurance, check to see if it covers anything

that Medicare doesn't. Keep your receipts and bills,

and compare them to your MSN to make sure you

got all the services, supplies or equipment listed. If

you paid a bill before you got your notice, compare

your MSN with the bill to make sure you paid the

right amount for your services. If an item or service

is denied, call your doctors and/or other health care

provider’s office to make sure they submitted the

correct information. If not, the office may resubmit.

If you disagree with any decision made, you can file

an appeal. On the new MSN design, the last page of

the MSN gives you step-by-step directions on when

and how to file an appeal.

Becky is a MMAP counselor and would be happy to

answer any questions you may have. You may reach
