What connection does your heart have to your ears? Your fun fact for the days is that the ears are very vascular, meaning they need a lot of blood flow for healthy performance and function. Many studies have shown that good circulation plays a role in maintain-ing good hearing health. We are also finding that things that im-pact blood flow such as strokes and other cardiovascular pathol-ogy can directly affect hearing. Furthermore, vascular hearing loss even causes very distinct patterns in hearing loss, with marked decline in the low frequencies, which is typically the opposite configuration for the vast majority of hearing loss.

The link between the ears and the heart is so correlated, that ex-perts in the field such as Dr. Charles Bishop an Assistant Professor at University of Mississippi Medical Center says that “the ear may be a window to the heart.”

Because of this correlation, it is important for anyone that has ex-isting heart conditions such as heart disease, stroke, or any other cardiovascular disease to receive annual audiological evaluations to monitor the ear.”Hearing health should not be assessed in a vacuum,” said Bishop. “There is simply too much evidence that hearing loss is related to cardiovascular disease and other health conditions. It’s time we maximized the information we have in order to benefit the individual’s overall well-being.”

HOME HEALTH CARE 4 CHECKLISTBefore you contract for care in your home go over the first list to be sure your home is prepared. The second list are questions you should ask your care agency before hiring them.

YES NOMAKE SURE HOMES ARE READY FOR PATIENT CARE:q q Have you checked for any physical obstacles or made any necessary space alterations?q q Is the home arranged to guarantee maximum independence?q q Checked home for safety hazards? (Loose wires, slippery floors, rugs)?q q Called pharmacist in advance for any necessary prescriptions?q q Made a list of important telephone numbers to call in an emergency?q q Made a backup list of people in case a caregiver does not show up?q q Arranged transportation to hospital or physical therapy?q q Can the patient drive himself if the car is properly equipped?q q Placed a calendar near the telephone for easy and quick reference?q q Are there working smoke detectors on every floor?q q Keep electric fans out of reach. Cover radiators with radiator guards?q q Is there a storage area for prescriptions and/or over the counter medications?q q Inform neighbors of any safety features in home that may restrict entry?

HOME HEALTH CARE SERVICES:q q Does the agency conduct an in-home assessment prior to developing a care plan?q q Will the agency consult your doctor or other professionals before developing a plan?q q Does your agency assess the patient’s ability to perform normal daily activities?q q Does your agency render aid as necessary, but not make the patient more dependent?q q Does the agency consider your home environment?q q Do they take into consideration your financial situation?q q Do they provide or coordinate social support?q q Will you receive a written, detailed plan after assessment?q q How flexible is this assessment plan?q q Do you have all agreements in writing? (This is very important!)q q What are the agency’s supervision policies?q q Who provides supervision and when is that person available?q q Can your agency provide a visit by a registered nurse on a regular schedule?q q Can services be covered by Medicare, Medicaid or Insurance? Any out of pocket expenses?q q Are there any conditions a patient has that won’t be cared for?q q Does the agency provide medical equipment or coordinate with another entity?q q Does the agency let family members know how they can help?q q Does the agency offer specific healthcare services like nursing or physical therapy?q q Does the agency meet my special needs like language or cultural preferences?q q Do they offer personal care services like help with bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom?q q Do they offer support services, or help arrange for services, such as Meals on Wheels?q q Do they have staff available to provide the type and hours of care my doctor ordered?q q Is the agency recommended by my hospital discharge planner, doctor, or social worker?q q Does the agency have staff available at night and on weekends for emergencies?q q Does the agency conduct background checks on all staff?q q Does the agency have letters from satisfied patients, family members and/or doctors?

QUESTIONS TO ASK: What services are provided?What kind of support is available to the family and caregiver? What roles do the attending physician and hospice play? What does the hospice volunteer do? How does hospice keep the patient comfortable? How are services provided outside of business hours? How and where does hospice provide short-term inpatient care? With which nursing homes or long-term care facilities does the hospice work? Can this service be brought into a nursing home or other living facility? How long does it typically take the hospice to enroll someone once the request for services is made? How does the physician work with the family and patient? Is the hospice licensed or certified? If so, for what types of services? Are services offered in the home? Is the service insured against liability? Is the care plan developed in consultation with your loved one’s physician? Are family members, including myself, included in reviewing and contributing to the care plan? Is the care plan completed in person with a nurse or social worker?
