The White House officially recognized March as National
Professional Social Work Month in 1984. From 1984
until 1998 the centennial year of the profession—NASW
selected asocial issue to promote every year.
Topics included the health care crisis, hate crimes,
violence prevention, racial and ethnic harmony, HIV/
AIDS, children in poverty, aging parents, value of work
homelessness and more. From 1998 to 2004, Social Work
Month themes promoted the profession with general
campaigns about who social workers are and how they
benefit society.

DO YOU HAVE A DISABLED PARKING PLACARD ???
Beginning in February 2017, Disabled Parking Placard issued by the RMV will
have a new appearance. What the change is and what this means for you:
*Small blue wheelchair symbols will now appear behind the Placard Number and
Expiration Date. This is a security feature to prevent fraudulent placards.
*Old style placards WILL remain VALID until the date of expiration
shown on the placard.
*You do NOT need to do anything if you have a placard. A new one will be
sent to you when your old placard expires!
Anyone needing help filling out an application for a disabled parking placard, or if
you have questions about your existing placard, please contact
Sharon Felton or Lynne Barrett at 978-744-0924.
RMV NEAR ME
The Registry of Motor Vehicles is partnering with area Councils on Aging (COA) to provide five of the most common
transactions online at COA sites to hopefully decrease wait times at registry branches. The Salem Council on Aging is
happy to announce “we are one of those sites.”
Transactions are:
-License renewals (for licensed drivers younger than age 75)
-Registration renewals
-Change of address
-Duplicate license or registration
-How to report a lost or stolen disability placard & how to request a replacement
You must have a valid checking account orc credit card to process any transaction (no cash will be accepted).
Please be advised that the staff/volunteers at the Salem COA are not required to provide assistance and there maybe
instances where the Salem COA staff/volunteers my decline to process your transaction with the Registry.
For more information or to schedule an appointment please contact Sharon Felton or Lynne Barrett at 978-744-0924.

When the Salem public schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Senior
Center cancels its scheduled activities, transportation appointments, This allows
for the Department of Public Services and our own Building Manager to focus
on snow removal and plowing during a storm and its aftermath. You may call the
Senior Center on a snow day and speak with one of the staff or leave a message
for us. As always, we encourage you to stay safe during a storm and to let us
know how we can assist you in the aftermath.
