“People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy”.
(Anton Chekhov)
Last Saturday, 21 June marked the Winter Solstice. Thankfully our days are becoming
slightly longer each day. Today marks the end of the second term. It has been cold and
wet, but the glorious days in-between soften the wintery weather. Our students
completed their June Examinations this week and reports will be emailed. Please book
appointments to meet with your child’s teachers at our Teacher-Parent Liaison Meetings
to be held in the first week of next term (details have been sent out). Triangulation of
communication between teacher-parent-student is advantageous to improving
academic results.
We commend our students on all their achievements this term- academic, sport,
cultural and in the sphere of community service. Thank you to the Academic Staff for all
they have undertaken. We acknowledge the important contribution of the
Administration and Support Staff too. We thank our Parents for their positive support of
our school and their child’s education. We wish all families a restful and gentle winter
break. If you are travelling, return to Cape Town safely.
Herewith some end-of-term news and important reminders for the start of next term:
Admin staffing: We say ‘thank you’ and ‘farewell’ to Anne Bareham as she
looks forward to her retirement, travels and family-time. Therese Doidge will take
over as SP/ College PA and we warmly welcome Antoineta Da Silva as our Front
Office Receptionist.
World Challenge Expedition to Vietnam: Lia Wulfsohn (Gr 10), Matt
Feinstein (Gr 12), Daniel Raubenheimer (Gr 10) and Bradley Wilcock (Gr 10),
accompanied by Ms Kirsty Rielly will be joining with RH Bedfordview and
Bryanston High on their expedition to Vietnam. They will undertake a community
project at a hospital assisting disabled children and the elderly, as well as a hike
through the Mai Chau region. We wish them safe travels and salute the work
they will be undertaking.
Congratulations to the SP Drama pupils on their exceptional achievements in
the recent Cape Town Drama Eisteddfod. We acknowledge the professional
assistance of Ms Cathryn Edwards.
The SP pupils enjoyed a fun Winter Sports Day. Well done to all the
participants and thanks go to Staff along with Mr Client Musamba and the
supportive parents.
The College students benefited from several Life Orientation based courses
and workshops and others enjoyed a fun Inter-House Soccer day. Thank
you to Staff for facilitating and organising these events.
Congratulations to Kirstie Davies (Gr 7) and Kayleigh Davies (Gr 9) on
receiving their WP Colours in Artistic Gymnastics.
The Woolworths MySchool card has 203 supporters and raised R5572.43. The
funds are used to purchase Library books and resources. Our Library in turn
assists other libraries in need. Thank you most sincerely to all our parents for
your support. If you would like a card, please contact the school.
We wish our Muslim families well for the month of Ramadan

Dear Mums and Dads
Phew… do I hear tangible
sighs of relief as the academic
term draws to an end? Yes, the
June examinations have come
and gone. Today you will receive
your child’s report via electronic
mail. Please read your child’s
report carefully. Teachers have
spen t t ime formu la t in g
meaningful comments that
accompany the marks or
symbols presented for each
subject. Set aside some time to
discuss your child’s report with
them, highlighting the strengths
and weaknesses. Perhaps this
might be a good time to assist
your child to set some new goals
for the new term. Support
classes are available for all
subjects. See the end of term
envelope for details regarding
times and venues for these
support classes. Whilst it is
imperative that your child has a
break during the upcoming
vacation, it is also very
important that your child
continues to read, read and
read. Reading has a positive
impact on the comprehension of
all of your child’s academic
subjects. It is vital!
Please be so kind as to
remember to book your place for
the upcoming TPL should you
wish to discuss your child’s
progress with their teachers.
Best wishes for the upcoming
break.

SPOT OUR ART
Grade 4s soar! The Gr 4s were inspired by images of birds and artworks my South African artist, Maggie Laubser, to begin new artworks. Searching for fabrics and interesting ‘bird’ things, together with much cutting, pasting and attaching, gave us these interesting results! Well done, Gr 4s! Grade 5s create! The Grade 5 pupils ended this term by creating their own Egyptian gods, based on work they had addressed in So-cial Sciences. We look forward to seeing the final ‘Egyptian pyramid wall’ when the creations are complete. Grade 7s print!
The Gr 7s have finally seen the outcome of many weeks of preparations to at last print their lino blocks! It was wonderful to see the very happy faces when the first prints were revealed! Well done to each and every one of you for your perseverance! I am very proud of you! And especially the results! Marja de Witte
This was a very busy term for the extra curricular Drama pupils. Grades 5-7 were entered into the 2014 Cape Town Eisteddfod, which was held at the Seapoint Civic Centre. Pupils were entered into various categories. These being, Prose, Group Dramatic Extract and Creative Adverts. All pupils were enthusiastic and came to all rehearsals, even the ones held on Saturdays! We are very proud of each pupil, as they showed great commitment to Drama, as well as to their aca-demic studies, as the Eisteddfod was held during and just after the examination.
The following scored a diploma (90-100%): Alexi Shaff (Grade 6) and Sydney Mainstone (Grade 6 individual prose) "Family Meeting" (Grade 6 Group piece)
The following scored honours plus (85-89%): Creative advert (Grade 7) Olivia du Toit and Mila Terespolsky (Grade 7 individual piece) India-Rose Roelofsz, Isabelle Facey, Lukhanyo Graham, Jenna Coetzee, Mila Methvin, Kate Rich, Cas-sandra Evgenicos (Grade 6 individual prose) "James and the Giant Peach" (Grade 5 group piece) "Beauty is a Beast" (Grade 6 Group piece)

The Grade 6 pupils once again
had the opportunity to be creative
in the Afrikaans class. They enjoyed
making their Fathers' Day cards in
class. We not only had
fun, but learnt a wide variety of
new words!
