Navigation District Attorneysof Texas gather in Houston

for biannual meetingAlgenita Davis, counsel for the Port ofHouston Authority, recently participated inthe biannual meeting of the NavigationDistrict Attorneys of Texas in Houston. Thegroup allows attorneys representing thestate’s ports to meet and discuss maritimeand legal issues. In addition to Davis, PHArepresentatives included then AdministrationDirector William Colburn and Jack Rook,PHA contract administrator.

CHAMBER AND HEDC FORM BOARDThe Greater Houston Chamber of

Commerce and the Houston Econo-mic Development Council have an-nounced plans to create an umbrellaorganization that will govern and co-ordinate both entities.

Directors for the two groups in-structed a coordinating committee todevelop plans for the new organi-zation, the name for which has notyet been selected.SEPARATE IDENTITIES The chamber andHEDC will maintain separate iden-tities and missions after the neworganizational structure is in place.However, executives with each groupwill report to the president and chiefexecutive officer of the umbrellaorganization.

Lee Hogan, currently president ofHEDC, will be president of the neworganization.

Charles Savino has been serving asacting president of the chamber.Gerry Griffin recently resigned fromthe chamber presidency to accept aprivate-sector position.BACKGROUND HEDC was established

in 1984 in response to Houston’seconomic recession. The council hasconcentrated on diversifying anddeveloping the city’s economy.

The two organizations have dif-ferent missions, said HEDC ChairmanJohn Walsh. The chamber seeks toprovide a supportive environment forbusiness in Houston, while HEDC’sgoal is to create jobs by promotingbusiness start-ups, expansions andrelocations.

"These two functions are very dif-ferent processes involving differentactivities and professional re-quirements, yet the overall program’ssuccess depends upon effective coor-dination," Walsh said.FUNDING HEDC is funded by thebusiness community, the City ofHouston, Harris County and the Portof Houston Authority. The chamberis funded by membership dues. Oncethe new organization is in place, con-tributors may specify which organiza-tion their money should go to or maysplit their contributions between thetwo groups.

The honors were announced re-cently at the Admiral of the Ocean SeaAward dinner held at the SheratonCentre in New York.ROSETTE In addition to the Mariner’sPlaques, a Mariner’s rosette went toCapt. John Hunt, master of the vesselSEA ISLE CITY, hit by a Silkwormmissile in the Persian Gulf on Oct. 16,1987. Hunt was severely injured andblinded in the attack.

The second annual Seaports Con-nection conference will be held April5-7 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel indowntown Houston.

ARTICULATED BUS TRAVELS TO WESTCOAST VIA PORT OF HOUSTONThe M/V SAUDI HOFUF, operated bythe National Shipping Co. of SaudiArabia, recently discharged an Italian-made bus at the Port of Houston. TheMetro System of Seattle, Washington,has agreed to buy 232 of the buses,which were made by Bredo Costruzi-one in Pistoia, Italy. The buses will beshipped over an 18-month period.Houston was selected as the port ofdischarge because of the availability ofall-water service from Italy.
