Dear Seniors, I hope this message finds each of you well and you’re enjoying the peak of the summer season. I sure do miss seeing and visiting with everyone. Who would have thought that the COVID-19 pandemic would continue for this long? The added heat and higher than average temperatures this particular time of year has certainly added to the discomfort of many seniors. Lack of proper cooling such as adequate and operable air conditioning, fans, and other cooling devices can also pose a health hazard for seniors with heart disease, asthma, and breathing difficulties. and blisters. You may recall having chickenpox as a child, Shingles is caused by the same virus, the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). After you recover from chickenpox, the virus continues to live in some of your nerve cells. It is usually inactive, so you don’t even know it’s there. In fact, most adults live with VZV in their body and never get shingles. But, for about one in three adults, the virus will become active again. Instead of causing another case of chickenpox, it produces shingles. We do not totally understand what makes the virus go from inactive to active (sound familiar)? Although, having shingles doesn’t mean you have any other underlying diseases. In this month’s Senior Times Newsletter I would like to share some information about Shingles, which I hope you will find helpful and resourceful. How Do You Get Shingles? • Anyone who had chickenpox has VZV in

their body and is at risk for getting shingles. Right now, there is no way of knowing who will get the disease. But, some things make it more likely:

• Advanced age. The risk of getting shingles increases as you age. People may have a harder time fighting off infections as they get older. About half of all shingles cases are in adults age 60 or older. The chance of getting shingles becomes much greater by age 70.

• Trouble fighting infections. Your immune system is the part of your body that re-sponds to infections. Age can affect your immune system, so can an HIV infection, cancer, cancer treatments, too much sun, or organ transplant drugs. Even stress or a cold can weaken your immune system for a short time. These all can put you at risk for shin-gles.

Can You Catch Shingles? Shingles is not contagious. You can’t catch it from someone. But, you can catch chicken-

pox from someone with shingles. So, if you’ve never had chickenpox, try to stay away from anyone who has shingles. If you have shingles, try to stay away from anyone who has not had chickenpox or who might have a weak immune system. What Are the Symptoms of Shingles? Usually, shingles develops only on one side of the body or face and in a small area rather than all over. The most common place for shin-gles is a band that goes around one side of your waistline. Most people have some of the fol-lowing shingles symptoms: •Burning, tingling, or numbness of the skin •Feeling sick, chills, headache, upset stomach,

or fever •Fluid-filled blisters •Skin that is sensitive to touch •Mild itching to strong pain •Depending on where shingles develop, it

could also cause symptoms like loss of vi-sion or even hiccups.

For some people, the symptoms of shingles are mild. They might just have some itching. For others, shingles can cause intense pain that they feel from the gentlest touch or breeze.

How Long Does Shingles Last? Most cases of shingles last 3 to 5 weeks. Shin-gles follows a pattern: • The first sign is often burning or tingling

pain; sometimes, it includes numbness or itching on one side of the body.

• Somewhere between 1 and 5 days after the tingling or burning feeling on the skin, a red rash will appear.

• A few days later, the rash will turn into fluid-filled blisters.

• About a week to 10 days after that, the blis-ters dry up and crust over.

Page 3: Senior Times Newsletter 2020... · the discomfort of many seniors. Lack of proper cooling such as adequate and operable air conditioning, fans, and other cooling devices can also

• A couple of weeks later, the scabs clear up. • Most people get shingles only one time, but

it is possible to have it more than once. Long-Term Pain and Other Lasting Problems After the shingles rash goes away, some people may be left with ongoing pain called post-herpetic neuralgia or PHN. The pain is felt in the area where the rash had been. For some people, PHN is the longest lasting and worst part of shingles. The older you are when you get shingles, the greater your chance of de-veloping PHN. The PHN pain can cause de-pression, anxiety, sleeplessness, and weight loss. Some people with PHN find it hard to go about their daily activities, like dressing, cook-ing, and eating. Talk with your doctor if you have any of these problems. There are medicines that may help with PHN. Steroids may lessen the pain and shorten the time you’re sick. Analgesics, antidepres-sants, and anticonvulsants may also reduce the pain. Usually, PHN will get better over time. Some people have other problems that last after shingles has cleared up. For example, the blisters caused by shingles can become infect-ed. They may also leave a scar. It is important to keep the area clean and try not to scratch the blisters. Your doctor can prescribe an antibiotic treatment if needed. See your doctor right away if you notice blisters on your face—this is an urgent prob-lem. Blisters near or in the eye can cause last-ing eye damage or blindness. Hearing loss, a brief paralysis of the face, or, very rarely, swelling of the brain (encephalitis) can also occur. Have a Rash? Go to the Doctor If you think you might have shingles, talk to your doctor as soon as possible. It’s im-portant to see your doctor no later than 3 days after the rash starts. The doctor will confirm whether or not you have shingles and can make a treatment plan.

Although there is no cure for shingles, early treatment with drugs that fight the virus can help the blisters dry up faster and limit severe

pain. Shingles can often be treated at home. People with shingles rarely need to stay in a hospital. The Shingles Vaccine The shingles vaccine is a safe and easy, one-time shot that may keep you from getting shingles. Most people, age 60 and older,

should get vaccinated. You should get the shot even if you already had shingles or don’t re-member having chickenpox. However, if you have a weak immune system or allergies to certain medicines, make sure to check with your doctor first. You can get the shingles vaccine at your doctor’s office and at some pharmacies. All Medicare Part D plans and most private health insurance plans will cover the cost. What Can You Do About Shingles? If you have shingles, here are some tips that might help you feel better: • Get plenty of rest and eat well-balanced

meals. • Try simple exercises like stretching or

walking. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

• Apply a cool washcloth to your blisters to ease the pain and help dry the blisters.

• Do things that take your mind off your pain. For example, watch TV, read, talk with

Page 3 Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center, Inc.

friends, listen to relaxing music, or work on a hobby you like. • Avoid stress. It can make the pain worse. • Wear loose-fitting, natural-fiber clothing. • Take an oatmeal bath or use calamine lotion

to see if it soothes your skin. • Share your feelings about your pain with

family and friends. Ask for their under-standing.

Also, you can limit spreading the virus by: • Keeping the rash covered • Not touching or scratching the rash • Washing your hands often In addition to practicing COVID-19 safety measures such as staying away from large congregated groups, wearing masks, and social distancing— educating and making senior citizens equally aware of the symptoms associated with Shingles as well as the available vaccine is a step in the right direction for ensuring every senior has a safe and healthy summer.

I hope & pray that you will embrace and look forward to when we can all be together again. Please be assured my staff and I are focused on keeping seniors healthy and safe. We’ve been drafting and working on new & revised safety protocols and changes that we will have to make once the Governor lifts the order for senior centers across the state to no longer be closed and we are legally permitted to re-open. Even though we don’t know when exactly that will be, one thing we no for certain is that we won’t be able to simply go back to our old ways of hosting and doing things. This will mean changes for our consumers and cli-ents too. We remain very diligent at work even though the building currently remains closed to the public. Although we will not be hosting Senior

Day at the Guernsey County Fair this year due to COVID-19 related health and safety concerns, we do look for-ward to when we can all get together and not have to

worry about where everyone has been, where they’ve traveled, or if they’ve been exposed to the Coronavirus. Until then, please stay safe and have a healthy & enjoyable summer. God bless you and God Bless our nation…...I really do look forward to visiting with you soon! Sincerely,

• Stay hydrated! Stay hydrated! Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.

• When heat and humidity rise, everyone should avoid long exposure to the sun; drink plenty of fluids (water is best); avoid caffeine and alcohol; and try to spend as much time as possible in an air-conditioned or cool environment.

• During hot weather, when fans are used they should be used in well-ventilated areas. They should never be used in a closed room, as the intense heat is merely redistributed in other areas. Fans should be checked for safety and should be utilized with precaution according to individual manufacturer’s recommendations. Never leave electrical fans and other heating or cooling applications unattended.

• It is advisable to take cool baths or showers, wear lightweight clothing and avoid strenuous activity, especially during the warmest time of the day. It is also wise to avoid heavy meals, using cooking ovens, and avoid using salt unless directed by a physician.

• Above all, take the heat seriously; do not ignore danger signals like nausea, dizziness and fatigue. If you or anyone you know needs medical attention, call 911 immediately.

• Family, friends, neighbors, and in-home care providers should check on elderly individuals to ensure they are withstanding the heat and that they are comfortable during their normal sleep times.

• Educate yourself on the warning signs: dizziness, rapid heartbeat, diarrhea, nausea, cramps, thirst, throbbing headache, dry skin (no sweating), chest pain, great weakness, mental changes, breathing problems and vomiting. NOTE: These symptoms can also signal other major related health problems, such as heart failure. Again, if you experience any of them, contact 911 and/or a doctor immediately.

• Limit or curtail physical activity during extremely hot weather. Activity adds to heart strain.

• Avoid alcohol. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, resulting in fast water loss. In addition, alcohol can promote impairments making you less aware of the danger signs of heat stress.

• If you live alone, make arrangements for a trusted relative or neighbor to check in on your regularly.

• Take the heat seriously, pay attention to the danger signs and contact emergency personnel such as 911 or you doctor.

• KEEP COOL. The best advice is to keep as cool as possible. So if you or someone you know is vulnerable or faces a special risk from heat stress, please do your part in taking some helpful precautions to help and protect them this summer.

It’s more important now, than ever before, to make sure you complete the 2020 Census! The 2020 Census asks how many people are living or staying at each address. For each per-son, we ask about name, sex, age, date of birth, relationship, Hispanic origin, and race. We also will ask whether the housing unit, such as the house, apartment, or mobile home, is owned or rented, and for contact infor-mation in case additional information is needed.

Steps to complete by phone:

1. Dial 1(844)330-2020 2. Stay on the line until the messaging

prompts offer "say representative' or dial "0".

3. From there you will complete the decennial census with a live representative. There is a wait time as the call centers are running low staff due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Census Bureau will never ask you for:

• Your full Social Security number. • Your bank account or credit card numbers. • Anything on behalf of a political party. • Money or donations.

The Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center, Inc. is a registered 501 (c) 3 non-profit multi-senior services county-wide provider that is funded in part by the Ohio Department of Aging through The Area Agency on Aging-Region 9. Additional funding sources include a Senior Services Tax Levy, United Way of Guernsey County, as well as donations and contributions that are made by our countywide supporters. No one-single funding source supplies 100% of the funding that is required to sustain the many programs and services that GCSCC provides. All funds are obtained on a reimbursable basis and are received by GCSCC only after services have been provided to eligible senior citizens living throughout Guernsey County.

For over 47 years we have steadfastly continued our mission of serving older adults in Guernsey County. Due to the growing need for senior based services and programs the Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center, Inc. depends a great deal upon the kindness and generosity of others in helping us to fulfill our mission and goals. Your donations greatly assist us in our mission of serving senior citizens as well as help us to serve a growing and increasing aging adult population. Quality services including, but not limited to; home delivered meals, transpor-tation, and homemaking, are each provided on a “Donation Only” basis, whereby seniors will not be denied services based on their ability or inability to make a donation. Suggested Cost Sharing fees are recommended for some programs. Rising gasoline prices, increasing food costs, and other expenses require us to share this reminder about how crucial your donations are and how they go directly toward GCSCC achieving and fulfilling our mission of serving senior citizens.

Please remember GCSCC when structuring your Will; listing beneficiaries; and when making in-memoriam contributions are appropriate. We sincerely appreciate your kindness and support…and most importantly we know that the seniors that we serve appreciate your support too! Please help us secure the future of senior based services so that they are readily accessible and available for you or when someone in your own family or circle of friends might need them.
