Home Away from Home: Time for a New Beginning
by Helen K. Peterson, contributing writer
“mom and dad, I think we need to talk.”
How many Vancouver senior citizen homeown-ers have heard this familiar refrain from their adult children? A great many, it would seem.
the offspring of seniors can become con-cerned for the safety of their beloved parents. What if one of you has a medical incident and no one is there to help? What if a home inva-sion occurs at the house and the senior is too frail to fight them off, or a con tries to bilk a senior of their money?
or, in the case of a widow or widower, what if the person becomes so lonely and isolated that depression kicks in? or a slip down the front stairs results in a broken hip and the devastating health issues that ensue?
these are just some of the myriad questions that seniors and their families are faced with on a daily basis. there can be a lot of resis-tance to leaving the family home. It was
bought with elbow grease and hard work… the garden planted and the children raised… collectibles scattered throughout… this is the abode where memories were created, and leaving it seems unimaginable.
If, and when, senior homeowners decide that it is time to “downsize” – and by that they mean eliminating all the cooking, yard work, cleaning and looking after a residence that has become overwhelming — then there are many resources to assist in making the transi-tion seamless.
A wealth of knowledgeable consultants are available to provide assistance in clearing out clutter, pricing antiques, packing, and orga-nizing belongings in a caring manner that will help to start a new chapter of a senior’s life.
Vancouver’s retirement residences are the finest in the country; seniors will be amazed at the lack of intimidation and the welcoming they will receive when moving into their new “home away from home,” often right in their existing neighborhood. many offer comple-mentary tours, so seniors can get to know the environment and the people they may be sharing the next chapter of their life with.
there are always choices, and options. But it’s all about having that discussion.
“I am very content here. I believe it is a superb, well-managed residence.
Cavell Gardens has become my second home and I share it with a caring
community of interesting seniors.” Woodrow coward, resident

vancouver seniors’ guide 2014 15
by Helen K. Peterson, contributing writer
the overall percentage of seniors nationwide is expected to nearly double by 2036, from 13 per cent of the population to 25 per cent. this represents a staggering level of growth, as the post-war ‘baby boomers’ continue to slide in to the 65-and-over category.
Generally hailing from a frugal generation, to-day’s seniors and those that follow will have accumulated a generous amount of personal wealth, borne of working hard, buying a home at the right time that appreciated, investing wisely, and perhaps for those whose parents passed before them, acquiring inheritances.
estate planning may seem highbrow to some (luxury mansions, Rolls Royces and butlers, you say?), but in fact careful and professional plan-ning of a maturing family’s finances and wishes can help alleviate a lot of future problems.
You often hear about the heirs to an estate fighting over collateral in court for years on end. the animosity can rip through a family, leaving relationships devastated. A senior’s
hard-earned and well-managed personal es-tate deserves to be allocated properly, and financial planners and wills and estates law-yers can assist with every detail, including naming an executor.
there is also a Representation Agreement that can be drawn up; it’s a legal tool that ensures a senior’s wishes are followed with respect to their health care and finances, should they be-come unable to make decisions. In this case, a Power of Attorney (generally a trusted family member) will be named.
seniors are renowned for being very gener-ous when it comes to donating to local chari-table organizations. legacy experts can dis-cuss whether a senior wishes to contribute cash, interest from an investment, or other manner of contribution, to the cause that is most important to them.
And finally, death and taxes are no laughing matter, but they are inevitable. Knowing that final details are worked out can put the fam-ily’s mind at ease. today’s funeral planning companies are not the intimidating, hallowed halls of old. Funeral directors can sit down with the family and plan ahead so when the time comes, there is no “What do we do now?” situation. It’s about creating peace of mind, and seniors have truly earned it.
Forward Planning: Financial and Final wishes Put in Place
“You should review your Will every few years to ensure that it is current, as circumstances can change in regard to
your executor and beneficiaries.” Vancouver lawyer, Richard Bell

Healthy Living: Taking Advantage of the Products and Services
by Helen K. Peterson, contributing writer
People of all ages state that optimum health and well-being ranks as their number one con-cern and desire. Yes, even more than winning the lottery!
needless to say, for seniors it is even more of a pressing issue. mcmaster University’s paper on seniors’ Well-being stated that 81 per cent of seniors report at least one chronic condi-tion affects them regularly. And a further 33 per cent of seniors aged 85-plus have some form of dementia.
these numbers are arresting, and even more so when it’s considered that the life expectan-cy of canadian seniors has risen dramatically since 2000, but that the number of chronic diseases is also increasing.
the toll on society is even more apparent, as the children of seniors with issues are placed into situations of being caregiver to their parents. In fact, 77 per cent of family caregivers are female
– with 22 per cent of those employed full-time, creating a stressful environment.
overall, given these potential health and wellness issues, a senior who may be dete-riorating in the years to come needs the as-sistance of family, but also those of the prac-titioners who serve the city of Vancouver. Preventative health measures – from eyesight issues to hearing loss, from arthritic condi-tions to heart problems, to cancer preven-tion… and everything in between – need to be addressed before they get out of control.
Fortunately, Bc’s medical system ranked as supe-rior as far as taking care of basic medical needs, but families of seniors need to involve themselves in creating a health plan for senior individuals, to assist them with any serious issues.
Pay a visit to one of Vancouver’s experienced and professional health practitioners and begin the steps to a healthier older age. From the lo-cal podiatrist who eases foot pain to the kindly denturist who gives a senior a new lease on life with some comfortable pearly whites, Vancou-ver’s health providers are there to help out.
like the pharmacist who gently explains the prescription protocols, or a home care assistant that takes care of your medical and companion needs… what would you do without him or her? After all, it’s a life worth living to its fullest!
“I like the quality of the shoes and the knowledgeable salespeople. I have issues with finding the right support
for my feet and Foot Solutions is the answer for me,” says client, Beverly Ann

Activity Time: Fitness - and fun - helps slow aging
by Helen K. Peterson, contributing writer
Did you hear about the 96-year-old Japanese man who is still running marathons? Well, he must be exceptional, and the majority of se-niors could not even imagine trying that. But within their own boundaries, there is much to look forward to.
the 2012 Bc seniors Guide (a ministry of Health / seniorsBc initiative) challenges the notion of geriatric inevitability with positive results. It states that seniors are redefining the concept of aging and increasing life expectan-cy by being more physically active and more involved in groups in their communities.
Physical, and mental, engagement is para-mount to seniors enjoying their lives and staying out of hospital or long-term care for as long as possible. statistics canada says just 30 per cent of the way we age is due to genet-ics. And you can actually reduce your risk of chronic disease and disability by activity, di-etary and other means, and by avoiding falls and related injuries.
Vancouver’s wealth of activity centres, commu-nity centres and travel and leisure opportunities
mean there is something affordable for every pace and interest, too. And social interaction wards off isolation, making for happier lives.
If a senior lives in a retirement residence, the daily line-up of activities is there for the asking. Bingo, movies, bus trips, chair yoga, parties… it’s a healthy good time, and many residents say they haven’t time to become el-derly, with all the excitement!
Hobbies help the body and mind to age gracefully. there are workshops to show ar-thritic people how to take care of their backs and joints when gardening; for those who like to stroll daily, the latest walking poles make an ergonomic difference.
there are many lifelong learning options at local educational facilities, with tuition priced right for seniors, as well as recreation-al opportunities at the local YmcA.
With retirement can come a lack of struc-ture and goals, and that’s where volunteer-ing comes in. Vancouver seniors are highly valued for their generous hours of service donated to all number of causes. some may even choose to work part-time and be paid.
Whatever seniors choose to do, “just doing it” enhances quality and longevity of life.
“Dr. Fry had a wonderful time at the 411 Seniors Centre sing-a-long;
keep up that great voice work!” a comment on Hedy Fry, age 72,
a 20-year mP of Vancouver centre

Our Story:
Robin’s Pharmacy comes by its small-town feel and approach to customer service quite honestly.
“One of the biggest advantages to operating an independent pharmacy is that you get to provide care the way you want to provide it,” says Manweiler.
“We know the names of all of our customers and have very good relationships with them. I think they appreciate the level of personal service we give them, as opposed to feeling like they’re just another number at one of the larger chain stores.”
“We have a wide spectrum here — small families, professionals, the LGBT population, the elderly, First Nations and the mentally ill — so we have to understand the needs of each distinct group because it’s definitely not a homogeneous community,” says Manweiler. “We pride ourselves on being able to speak to each of those groups based on what their unique needs are. Every one of our customers has different needs, so we are very focused on providing advice or solutions that are specifically tailored toward them.”
People react differently to medicine as they get older, and using medications to maintain good health will likely increase. This means that you need a pharmacy that truly cares about you. At Robin’s Pharmacy, we help you:
• Understand how to take medication correctly and what the medication does for your health.
• Thoroughly understand prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and medical supplies.
• To read medication labels correctly, including dosing information and warnings.
• To take medication at the appropriate times.
• Understand drug allergies and their implications if you have them.
• Address problems with things like swallowing large pills, cutting pills if needed, and providing pill bottles that are easy-to-open.
• Review your medication history to determine how to better improve your overall health.
This is just a small list of services we provide. Visit us at the pharmacy, and let us get to know you on a first name basis. Our biggest service that we provide is that we care and we get to know you personally. Come in and say hi!
