Meet Adam Otto Generations United Summer Intern

How many young adults today learned how to play bridge or heard insider details of World War II? I have because of the time I’ve spent with older adults. That’s what makes my interest in intergenerational issues personal. I lived with my grandparents for about 15 years, and they were very involved in my life before that. Because of this, I know firsthand some of the difficulties that grand-families face. My grandmother is a strong advocate for kinship care issues. In the past, I worked with her local Relatives as Parents Program group, where I learned about various policy issues. Now, I’m a 24 year old graduate of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV. I’m also an intern at Generations United. Most of my work here will focus on grandfamilies and be research and policy related. During my time here, I’ve enjoyed attending meetings on topics ranging from neighborhood revitalization initiatives to child hunger program reforms. In June, I’ll also be working on “Raising Caregiver Voices,” an advocacy training session that will help form a “grandnetwork” in addition to training a new generation of advocates. I’ll also take part in the release of the joint advocacy agenda, Advo-cates for Families First, in collaboration with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the North American Council on Adoptable Children, and the National Foster Parents Association to be held at the Capitol Visitor Center on June 18. My interests span beyond kinship care policies to intergenerational collabora-tion. Since I grew up around older adults, not only am I aware of senior issues, but I also feel my time around them really enriched my life and gave me experiences unique to the typical young adult. Many seniors are eager to share their years of knowledge and experience. There is also a lot the youth can offer seniors. A youth’s vitality and enthusiasm can be invigorating for an older adult. For several years, I spent time with a feisty woman in her 90s. I ran various errands and tasks that she couldn’t do alone. Even though she has since passed on, I’ll cherish our friendship for the rest of my life and make use of what she taught me. I’m excited to be working at Generations United, helping to advocate for inter-generational issues, giving back to the people who helped me along the way. For more information on how you can help seniors in our community, please contact Amy at 304-263-8873 ext. 130 or at [email protected].

EXERCISE FOR THE FUN OF IT!Summer is finally here! Perhaps your exercise routine is in full swing. But now you can enjoy walking outdoors. You can switch from the boring stationary bike to a real bike, cruising through the neighborhood to check out other peoples’ gardens. If your exercise program slipped through the cracks in the snow, now is a good time to get it going again! Sound like fun? Yes? No.Don’t despair. Sometimes it’s just hard to get motivated. According to the Amer-ican College of Sports Medicine, women, in particular, are more likely to be less active during the winter months---30% less active than in warmer months. In an online article published on WebMD, “Why is it So Hard to Exercise?”The author, Linda Wasmer Andrews, credits certified health behavior coach Shelly Hoefs with the following statement: “When we try to start exercising, we think of all the excuses for not doing it and all the things that have gotten in the way before.” Hoefs suggests five steps to help you get started and to keep you on target.

Personal MotivationWhat goals do you have that exercise can help you reach? Weight loss? Lessen-ing the risk for diseases like heart and lung disease, diabetes, sometypes of cancer? Feeling more energetic? Increasing strength to better perform activities of daily living and stay independent? All of the above?

Realistic GoalsThe Council on Fitness and the American College of Sports Medicine recom-mend that adults perform at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise on most days of the week. Aerobic exercises are activities like walking, biking, and swimming. To keep goals realistic, start slowly if you have been inactive for a while.Exercise in intervals to achieve 30 minutes if necessary. You can set a goal to participate in a 5K run/walk event or other walk for a cause in your local commu-nity. Ask your friends and family to join you. Don’t think “Exercise”. Think fun.

Do Something You EnjoyKristen Dieffenbach,Ph.D., assistant Professor of athletic coaching at WVU encourages us to try a variety of classes or exercise devices. Something will click with you! Liking what you do for exercise makes it easier to invest time in it.

Plan How to Fit Exercise into Your ScheduleMake it a normal part of your day. Have a standing appointment with yourself to exercise!Researchers at Penn State found simply having a supportive friend, family mem-ber, or significant other makes you more likely to follow an exercise plan. When you know someone depends on you to meet them for a walk, you are more likely to join them, and vice versa.

Bounce Back From Set backsIf you miss a day of exercise at the gym because of unforeseen circumstances, don’t dwell on it. You can take a walk at home that evening and get back to exer-cise class the next day. If you are feeling under the weather, back off your pace and distance or have a rest day. You can return to your normal pace or resume exercise when you start to feel better.

The BSS Quilting Class who meet at the Senior Center every Thursday from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm, spent five months sewing this piece of art. They generously donated the Quilt to the

Activities/Wellness Department for a raffle prize.

Tickets are on sale now for $1.00 for a chance to win this beautifully handmade Log Cabin (queen plus size) quilt.

The drawing will be held at the 24th Annual Senior Picnic on Oct. 3rd. All proceeds will benefit Berkeley Senior

SOME THOUGHTS ON MEDICARE

STEVE ENGLEBRIGHT, BSS SHIP COUNSELOR

Medicare can indeed be confusing because of its many different parts as well as when chang-es take effect. If you are new to Medicare or if you are a Medicare enrollee, here are a few

things you should keep in mind:All parts of Medicare have deductibles and co-pays. You need to familiarize yourself with your “Medicare and You” book to know how those de-ductibles and copays may affect your cost shar-

ing for services.New enrollees to Medicare qualify for initial di-agnostic testing and I highly recommend that

you take advantage of this service.

Which part covers what?Medicare is comprised of 4 major programs; parts A, B, C and D. Parts A and B are often

referred to as original Medicare.

Generally speaking, part A covers in-patient hospitalization. There are copays and deduct-

ibles that apply. Part B covers outpatient services and some oth-er medical care such as doctor visits, lab work, blood work and diagnostic services. Generally speaking, you will be required to pay the copays and deductibles applicable to the acceptable

costs for these.

Part C is Medicare “advantage plans”. These are structured more like group health insurance plans such as you may have had during your working years. There are high deductible ad-vantage plans as well as advantage plans that have no initial deductibles before they begin to

pay their scheduled amounts.

Some are PPO plans and some are PFFS plans.

It is important that you are aware of the differenc-es.

Part D is the Medicare prescription drug bene-fit that provides insurance coverage for medica-tions. These can significantly lower your costs

for your medications.

This year’s open season for current Medicare enrollees will begin in October of 2014. It is al-ways a good idea during the open season to re-view your options and your current plan to find

the best costs for the new year.

Anyone who will become Medicare eligible be-fore then can call me for an appointment at: 304-

263-8873, ext.105.

I will be more than happy to help guide you through the process.

AARP SMART DRIVING COURSE

SCHEDULES FOR JULY AND AUGUST 2014

The AARP Smart Driving Course is specifically de-signed for the older driver, although there is no age

limit restriction. This class is geared toward decreas-ing accidents.

Summer is a good time to brush up on driving skills, and to inquire about an insurance discount at the

same time.

Please call the instructors for further information.

Berkeley Senior Services offers an 8 hour course to do this on July 16 & 17, and again on August 20 & 21.

Aminah Fidai instructs the first class from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, both days. She can be reached at 1-404-

468-3821 or 304-300-5234 to register.

The second class, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on both days, is instructed by Morley Shamblen.

Please call Helene Brill at 304-267-8756 for preregis-tration. Walk-ins are welcome at both these classes.

Each insurance agency offers a different policy for discounts on car insurance ñsome even pay for the tuition of the course ($15 for AARP members, $20

for nonmembers). To determine your discount, call your insurance agent.

Drive smart to keep your summer safe.
