SenseScotlandAnnual Review2010/2011
Welcome to our Annual Review 2010/11
A year in the life of Sense Scotland. Sense Scotland works with children and adults who have communication and support needs because of deafblindness, sensory impairment, learning or physical disability. We lead the field in communication and innovative support services for people who are marginalised because of challenging behaviour, health care requirements and the complexity of their support needs. We provide direct services to hundreds of people and their families across Scotland, all designed to provide choice and continuity across all age groups.
Inside, we share some of the highlights of our busy and fulfilling year, from our 25th anniversary lunch at Glasgow’s City Chambers to our fantastic Good Vibrations event at TouchBase. You’ll also meet some of the people at the very heart of Sense Scotland, our service users and their families.
Our current strategic priorities are to:

Greig needs support to communicate and socialise with other people. He visits Newark Drive, Sense Scotland’s family resource centre, for residential short breaks.
“For me it’s real peace of mind that he’s looked after so well. Newark Drive is a wonderful place for children. It’s also great for me to get a bit of a break, but most importantly he’s happy.
And when Greig’s happy, I’m happy.”

“It’s so easy to be isolated when you have a child with disabilities, so things like respite care and day services are invaluable,” says dad-of-three, Neil Doherty.

Fun, friendship and the community spirit
Was the order of the day
When we celebrated Burns night
The Auchtermuchty way.
The local farm supplied
The tatties and the neeps
And Carolina from the chip shop
Peeled the spuds with her machine.
Angela’s dad wielded his axe
To chop the neeps up small
As she began the cooking
Hoping there was enough for us all.
The helpers hung the tartan
And set the tables many
As Alan the accordionist
Got his gear set up and ready.
The Haggis was piped into the hall
By Jacqui - the farmer’s wife
Then ably addressed by our Bill Wood
And ‘cut up’ with a knife.
Poosie Nancy looked so lovely
Gina did her proud
And John Ross wowed us in his kilt
As he led them through the crowd.
Poosie recited the Selkirk Grace
And we toasted Robert Burns
Then we tucked into traditional fayre
To fill our hungry tums.
Molly danced the Highland Fling
Once we’d had our dinner
Then Beth recited the ‘Puddock’
Followed by Lee and the ‘Sair Finger’.
John Ross entertained us all
Singing the famous ‘Moon River’
And Steph had the room in silence
When she performed another.
As folk danced and mixed and mingled
The night was flying past
Then Ivor’s kilt fell to the floor
It gave us such a laugh.
People came from far and wide
To join the celebration
Catching up with fellow friends
They hadn’t seen in ages.
And so another Burns Night passes
We wish you all good cheer
And all that’s left for us to say is ‘Haste ye back next year!’
