Here at the Rockland JudoClub we train with respect, honor, discipline, devotion anddesire, all for the purpose ofself- improvement and develop-

ment. In Japanese, the concept that encompasses allthese traits is Oni gashi mas which means "please teachme" or "please join me." When we practice Judo, wecare about each other, each others welfare and we en-treat one another to share in each others journey. Youcan't properly play Judo without another judoka (judoplayer); hence by nature, Judo is a people sport.

When we train, the judoka must have good uchi komi orfree practice. This free practice is based on the threepillars of Judo (leverage, timing and speed). Throughthese three pillars, we provide not just free practice butunderstanding of the principles of Judo with goodsportsmanship in a safe environment. Welcome to Judoand to a better you. Sensei Michael Demaio.

Sensei Michael has over 44 years of experience in Judo;having trained under Walter Schumway (5th degreeblack belt) at the New City Judo Club, he brings awealth of information as a Shodan Black Belt Judoka.

JIGARO KANO

Jigaro Kano is the founding father ofJudo. Born in the Hyogo prefecture inJapan on October 28, 1860. Master Kanowas in his personal and professional lifean educator, who innovated not just theart of Judo but introduced the white, black belt systems (i.e. from novice toseasoned practitioner of Judo) and Danranking systems (ranking system amongstblack belts) within and amongst fellowpractitioners. Initially Master Kano was apractitioner of Jujitsu and developed Judo

(the Gentle Way) out of the principles learned from his study of Ju-jitsu.

Master Kano also played a key role in introducing and promotingJudo internationally to the Olympics. Master Kano's definition ofJudo was, 'Judo is the highest and most ifftcient use of both pf?ysicaland mental energy. Through training in the defense and attack tech-niques of Judo) the practitioner nurtures their pf?ysical and mentalstrength) and graduallY embodies the essence of the W cryof Judo. Thus) the ultimate o~jectz"veof Judo discipline is to be utilized as ameans of se!f-perfectz"on)and them·iforth make a positive contributionto society. ))This positive contribution is self perpetuating.

What is fascinating about Judo is that it i hard t believe that somuch can be accomplished with so little. Master Kanonoted) "Maximum ifftcienry with Minimum effort. ))Judo done properly is using the leverage, timing andspeed of your own body in concert with the opponentsto yield maximum results. Master Kano understood thatbeing able to defeat one's opponent is only one aspira-tion of Judo, but the higher aspiration is to improveone's self for the benefit of all.

To the right is the Japanese symbol for Judo.

Ranking sytemOn the next few pages you will discover the ranking system of TheRockland Judo Club. These ranking systems work in concert withthe ranking system as published by the International Judo Federa-tion of which The Rockland Judo Club is affiliated.

Below the ranking systems are found the throws, submission holdsand chokes of the Judo martial arts system. (see note on pg.6)

Dojo EtiquetteWhen you enter the Dojo you must remove your shoes to showrespect for the Dojo and for the Sensei (teacher/Instructor). Bowwhen entering and leaving the dojo, bow when you are bowed toand to say thank you.

When practicing Judo, you should adequately prepare for the en-counter by washing your body and hair because the contact is closeand the engagement is physical. It is disrespectful to not washyourself when you know you are going to interact physically withanother Judoka. Please wear deodorant. Wash your uniform andair dry it, do not put it in the dryer, as it may shrink.

Clip your fmgernails because the Gi's (judo uniform) are usuallymade to withstand a lot of punishment and the fabric can pull yournails back when you are trying to practice. There is no gum chew-ing, no conversing about issues outside of Judo while working out;keep your mind on the moment. If you're going to be absentplease send a text to Sensei ok. Fee's shocld be paid on time but ifthere is an issue work it out before they're due. To come to classowing dues and you haven't worked out they're payment beforeclass creates strain on the relationship. Sensei is reasonable soplease handle the business in a timely fashion.

Do not question the Instruction of the Sensei. If you have a ques-tion about the practice please ask it. Questions are wonderful op-portunities to explore Judo but when you bring "another voice"into the dojo to compete with the Sensei's "voice" it is disrespect-ful and offensive. Never challenge the Sensei. Come expecting tolearn. Do not try out other techniques learned elsewhere on fellowJudoka, except what is permitted by Sensei. Learn your Judo.

not strength. If you lower your center of gravitybelow your opponents and pull them, you canthrow anybody. This is why the martial arts arecalled martial sciences because if you have an un-derstanding of leverage, it'll work.

Please feel free to look up some of the moves onYoutube or 5 uperJudo TV to help you conceptualizeand add to what Sensei is already teaching you. Wealso recommend two texts that might be helpful aswellJudo Unleashed and KodokanJudo.

Judo is a chess game that you play physically withyour opponent. You are always trying to out smartand out think or countermand his/her attack. Asyou grow in Judo you will develop physical intelli-gence and sensitivity. Your sensitivity to yourstrengths and limitations will become more appar-ent and freeing. As you grow in Judo be carefulnot to chase 'color', meaning don't do Judo toclimb the ranks, do Judo to become more than whatyou are today. Some people do martial arts toclimb ranks. They have missed the essence of theArt.

The above throw is called Uchi mata and it is an In-ner thigh throw. What is wonderful about thisthrow is that it is probably one of the mostly usedthrows practiced in competition. If you are inter-ested in competing and even if you are not, youshould attend a competition to get a feel for whatcompeting is like. Who knows, you might actuallywant to compete as you move up in rank. It is anexcellent opportunity to see 'If you got the goods'because the real opponent is not the one oppositeyou on the mat, the real opponent is YOU. As amartial artist you are working to beat yourself, yourselfishness, your ignorance, your laziness. The realopponent is the person staring back at you in thenurror,

Chokes and submission holds are also apartof Judo. If you are in law enforcement, sub-mission of an assailant is important. Re-straining a criminal or an attacker is essentialand could make the difference in a life threat-ening situation.Holds in Judo constitute the means by whicha person restrains bodily the body of an op-ponent.
