Let’s Discuss What is the difference

between something that is abstract and something that is concrete?

Does it make a difference which one you use in your writing?

Why is it important to add detail?

How do we do this? Using Words that paint

pictures Sensory detail = Sight, Sound,

Smell, Taste, Touch Using Figurative Language

Simile Metaphor Personification Hyperbole Allusion Onomonopeia And more

Using Strong, Active Verbs stalk vs walk, tired vs exhausted, funny vs side-splitting

Using vivid describing words Describe specific emotions or

feelings

Let’s Practice Students should take out a draft that they

considered particularly difficult or “boring” in their opinion, or perhaps that is too low on the word count. Identify 5 places within the draft that they could add additional detail by: Using Words that paint pictures Using Figurative Language Using Strong, Active Verbs Using vivid describing words Describe specific emotions or feelings
