Planters are perfect! You can use them as decor either indoors or outdoors. Planters provide an excellent way to spruce up various areas in your home, such as the walls inside your home, or your patio outdoors. However, you may be uncertain about why you should select planters over other types of decor. Here are some of the main benefits of planters, including wall planters:
1. Planters are attractivePlanters can spruce up various areas in your home. For instance, adding one or two planters on the walls of your home can make the wall and the room more at-tractive. Use wall planters to create a focal point in the room. You can also use them as accents, to complement other decor on or off the walls. While the original planters are for plants, you can enjoy wall planters for the beauty of the containers themselves!
2. Planters can be used with or without plantsBy definition, the original purpose of planters was to hold plants. Wall planters differ somewhat, as their main purpose is as decoration. However, you can also add either real or faux flowers or foliage to them, in order to enhance the planters further. Still, wall planters, such as metal wall planters, can also function well without the plants. The color and style of the planters can liven up any room!
3. Planters can be used indoor and outdoorsYou can add wall planters to both the interior and exterior walls of your home. Adding them to the interior of your home can help to bring dull walls and rooms to life. You could also add them to your decks and garden areas, to create the same effect. The versatility of wall planters makes them the perfect wall decor.
4. Planters are sturdyManufacturers produce planters, such as wall planters, using a variety of sturdy materials. Metal and wood are typically the most common ones. One of the main benefits of using such sturdy materials is that you can hang the planters both indoors and outdoors. This can be a welcome benefit whether you want to liven up a particular room in your home, or create the same effect for your deck, patio, garden, etc. In these tough economic times, we are looking for value more than ever. Fortunately, wall planters are built to last--and last, and last.
5. Planters are available onlineMaking our lives more convenient, metal wall planters are available online. With our day-to-day lives becom-ing increasingly hectic, this is a welcome benefit. We can avoid waiting in traffic, waiting in line, and waiting for stores to open. Internet shopping makes finding wall decor easier than ever. With a few clicks of the mouse, we can easily browse and select the wall planters that best meet our needs!
If you need to spice up areas on the interior or exterior of your house, then consider wall art decor, such as metal wall planters. While you can use them without plants, never plan your decor without them!

Many people today are refocusing their priorities on family and home. Industry experts say more homeowners are creating a home theater experience in their home instead of going out. Perhaps you’re thinking about treating yourself to a new HDTV. Or maybe you’re getting a new home theater system just in time to invite friends over to enjoy this fall’s football or hockey games in big-screen style.
But do you know how you’re going to incorporate this new technology into your home decor? Here’s some tips to streamline your space and cut out the clutter. The new term “Techorating” means combining technology and interior design so that a room works as one unified space.
Start by recycling all of your old technology. You don’t need your old box TV or huge computer monitor anymore, so why not be environmentally responsible, get it out of your house and recycle it? Many companies offer recycling programs for unwanted electronic products.
Pick a focal point. Now that the old stuff is gone, find your room’s focal point and work your way out. In large rooms, make sure you don’t go overboard with one particular theme, pattern or technology. With just a few integral pieces, the room can be made to feel spacious, yet comfortable. And remember to streamline by removing unneces-sary clutter and installing shelving units or wall-mounting your new HDTV.
Consider your space. This is a case where bigger is not always better. Technology needs to fit the space you have; otherwise it can overwhelm a room. While large flat-screen HDTVs are a nice upgrade, they can overpower the room if the screen size is too large for the space. You need other items on the wall to offset the presence of the TV. If you’re still shopping around, take measurements of your wall space along with you to make sure you get the perfect sized technology.
Practice cord control. Nothing causes more headaches than trying to hide all the cords behind furniture while still trying to reach the available
outlets. Go wireless - many leading technology companies, offer wireless speakers and TVs, giving your living space a crisp, modern feel.
Use digital accents. Digital photo frames placed throughout the room and house can hold family photos during the regular year, but bring a reminder of your favorite team’s great season when you have everyone over to watch the games. The photos can help get the conversation going, especially if everyone has just met. Plus, this is a decoration you don’t have to clean up -- either reprogram the frame or take it on the road to the next game party.
Whether you’re equipping a tiny den, medium-sized bedroom or expansive media room with the latest in consumer electronics, techorating is a way to get the most from your new equipment and your new digital lifestyle.

omeowners always have something in mind when it comes to their house. They know that they have to have that one thing that their heart desires the most. Some would want
to see metal wall sculptures. Others prefer to have paintings. There are even those that collect and buy things from all over the world and make it part of their décor. No matter what décor or sculpture you decide to have, you know that you will be happy once you see in your house.
Wall sculptures are something more and more people want to have in their abode. It just gives character to the house as well as the room where it is situated. Putting it in the corner beside your sofa is okay. If you have a fireplace, you can also put it near there. Just try to imagine where the family as well as the guests that enter the room will see the wall sculpture. You can even add more décor around it to make sure that the people know that this is something they should look at.
The first thing you have to consider when looking for that perfect wall sculpture is its size. You also must know the size of the wall where you will place the wall sculpture. This is very important because you want the wall to come alive by means of the décor. The problem is, you might buy something that is too big for the wall, and it would not look nice once you hang it. One recommendation is to list down or memorize the size of the wall so that you can gauge on how the metal wall sculpture will look in your house.
Another thing you have to know is your budget. This is not an issue if you know that you can buy whatever wall sculpture you like since money is never an issue for you. However, if you are those individuals that must set a limit on their expenses, that is fine too. You can still find a good wall sculpture if you know where to look for. Sometimes, you stumble upon nice décor and then when you see the price tag, it is relatively cheaper than those you find in the malls.
Lastly, inspect the metal wall sculpture before you buy it. It is best to ask if they have new stocks always just to make sure that it is new. If ever there is no more stock left and the only one
available is the one on display, you can get that too. Nevertheless, you can still look around if there are stores that have the same item that you want. Once you decide to buy the one on display, you must inspect it carefully. There might be some flaws. Minor flaws are okay especially if it is barely noticeable. However, if you can see the damages already, you had better look for another one. Such items are not worth your money. Who knows, you might be lucky and find something better than what you saw.

1. Wait until the perennial top growth has completely died back before preparing
these flower beds.
2. When the top growth has died you will want to cut the perennials back almost to
ground level.
3. Compost the cuttings that are disease infested. Again, if you do not have a
compost pile then you should start one if you like.
4. Gently rake the existing mulch that you have around the perennials away from
those perennials for now.
5. Add a thick layer of compost around the perennials.
6. Rake the mulch back in place along with adding a new layer of mulch around
the perennial.
If your flower beds have perennials, flowers that
grow back every year without replanting, or the
flower beds have both annuals and perennials then you will
need to follow these steps:
• Carpet • Linoleum • Ceramics • Hardwood
• Laminates

Everyone wants his or her home to be as presentable and warm as possible. When guests arrive, they want them to feel at home and not be too shy about sitting on the couch and the likes. Adding some hanging wall art is one great way to make your home more inviting. Guests would definitely want to stare at this especially if it is an exceptional piece.
Homeowners would want their homes to be aesthetically beautiful too so, that it catches the attention of passersby. They might be even able to get inspiration by merely looking at the façade. Some individuals who plan to build their own house can draw ideas from what they see in your home. It does not matter whether they get inspired from your miniature collection of things or from the paintings
that hang on your wall. All you have to do is to try to make yourself happy by putting almost everything that you want. However, you have to know when to stop on adding.
Another way to make your home look great aside from hanging wall art is to make every room an extension of yourself or your family. You add a family portrait here and there. Experimenting with the color of the photograph can make a huge difference when a person looks at it. If you feel that, you have to make a certain picture black and white, do so. Such color combination makes the photo more dramatic and nicer to look at. If you want a photo to be in the sepia tone, it is okay too. It gives the picture a sort of aged look.
However, retaining the vibrant color that the photo has is still okay. There is nothing wrong with that especially if you feel that the colors brighten up the picture. Editing is also an option but there are just some shots that you do not need to touch at all. They are okay in their original form and do not need any further enhancement. Sometimes, people tend to overdo it just to show off their photo editing skills. It is a recommendation that you too have to know when you have to retouch the picture or not.
Lastly, you have to have a theme to your house. This keeps the rooms in harmony with one another. In addition, your hanging wall art can be a bit different so that it stands out in the room. This is an effective way if you want your guests to take notice of the other, more special, things in your abode. Just try to make everything within range. Making everything exaggerated might not be pleasant to your guests and relatives. However, if they already know that you are such person, go for it. Everyone knows that you can learn so much from people by merely exploring their house. This time, make yourself known to those who do not know you. Show them who you really are and be proud of it.

You do not specifically have to live in the Wild West or be a real cowboy to decorate your bedroom with a western theme. There are many people who have western style homes and enjoy this atmosphere everyday in their rooms. This type of theme is a great décor for any room and gives it sense of the old west culture.
Creating a bedroom with a Western style can actually have an inviting and masculine feel to it. Mixing and matching different items associated with the West like wooden carvings or cowboy hats can truly make your room your personal space. To create a cowboy or western style for your room, here are a few ideas you can use.
• The color of the wall of your room will be very important. Warm and vibrant colors are usually used to depict a western mood to it. A western look often consists of browns, blacks, tans and other dark colors. To highlight the color contrast, select white ornaments for a splash of brightness. One good idea is to use white cow print fabric to make the bed set and curtains. A white carpet with dyed with black odd shaped spots will also create a dramatic effect
for your room.
• Decorating the wall with western wall art is an artistic way of incorporating the western theme. Sometimes you can find these inexpensive wall art in garage sales and flea markets. Take the time to visit these places because you’ll never know you
might just find the perfect piece of art to hang in your room.
• Hanging up a rope lasso or making small ones glued to your lampshade can also show a western theme to it. You can also cut pictures of horses, cattle, or Indians and use this as a border around the top of your room.
• Decide on having your floor generally made out of hardwood. Also choose area rugs which are flat woven styles or maybe even fake fur skins.
• To create a cowboy look and feel, decorate your room with saddles and leather straps. These can be draped over your table chair. Use your imagination and come up with ingenious ways on how to make western accessories using horse shoe, Indian outfits and cowboy hats.
• Using items made of iron such as iron lamp bases and cabinet knobs will fit well in a Western room.
• You can decide to design your room in a number of ways. You can go with the country theme or even the old west route. It really depends on your preference. Include things such as cowboy boots and guitars to enhance the western culture in your room.
• Nowadays, there are available door knobs in the market with designs that reminds us of the Wild West. Choose a design you like and replace your old door knob with this western-inspired knob.
• Alternative wall hangings can include horse whips, chaps and stirrups. Wooden items can be found in craft stores. There are numerous shapes and sizes to choose from. Paint these shapes and hang them on the wall.
• Window treatments should be in basic colors and not too drastic. Look for wooden shutters or simple curtain panels.
• Old trunks and stressed wood furniture can be placed inside your room and will definitely keep the western look going.
Incorporate all these ideas from painting your room with dark colors up to hanging up the western wall art to achieve the Western look you want to accom-plish. After you have all the furniture and decora-tions in place, you will have produced a warm, cozy bedroom where you can enjoy and relax. It will be like living in the Wild West but still in the comfort of your bedroom.

Is your home the place where your friends and family tend to gather for sporting events, card games or just a great place to hang out on a Friday night? Why not consider building a home bar to add a little flare to your entertaining? Building a home bar is a great addition to any home, but deciding on building a bar is just the first step. Many decisions have to be made throughout the building process to determine what the bar will look like, where is will be located and just how much money you want to spend on such an endeavor.
In many homes the bar is located in the basement in a large rec room. If you have the space to do this, it makes sense to locate the bar there, but it is entirely up to you where you locate it. If you are not handy with tools, it’s likely best to hire a contractor to build a proper home bar that you will be proud of, however if you do have some technical skill, building a bar doesn’t have to be difficult. It is possible to even purchase a home bar kit that can make it much easier to build. Most people however prefer a more custom bar that fits in with their current decor
Many types of home bars exist to suit any decor including Tiki Bars, Tuscany Bars or a Renaissance Bar. For those in warmer climates, a home bar could even be installed outdoors, around a pool or on a deck. Tiki bars are often popular choices for poolside bars. For people that live in parts of the country that have cold winters, an indoor home bar may be more appropriate. Depending on the current decor of your home, some bars work better than others, but if you are looking to build a themed room or build out an unfinished basement, any style will work.
Once you decide on style, now comes the important decisions of what your home bar will include. A simple bar does not need to include electricity or water, but both these utilities will greatly improve what you can do with the bar. With electricity and water your home bar can include a sink, a beer fridge, an ice maker and even a kegerator. With all these elements you can have a fully stocked bar without having to make trips to the kitchen for ice, water or cold beer. For those that want to provide their guests with an authentic bar experience, installing an LCD TV on the wall can add to the ambiance and a pool table would also be nice if space allows.
Once your home bar is finished, all your friends will want to spend their spare time lounging around your bar, having great conversation. Of course during those big games like the Super Bowl or NHL Playoffs, your home bar is sure to make it a fun time with cold beer and good friends.

When you look at waterfall designs, there are those that are absolutely beautiful and those that just don’t quite make it. So, how do you create a spectacular one?
The key is to make it look as natural looking as possible. Observing those found in nature will allow you to see how those created in home landscapes should look.
Although you will see some water features where the water flows gently over rocks, many have very dramatic waterfall spillways. A waterfall spillway often is created by a large flat rock, which is built up beneath it by smaller round stones. Picture a step with an overhang. The higher up the flat stone is from the level beneath it, the higher the waterfall.
These flat stones might be pieces of bluestone. They also might be thick slabs of fieldstone. There is no reason why you can’t mix them as this might occur in our natural environment also. Another aspect of waterfalls in nature is that they generally will have more than one spillway.
The sides of the waterfalls are often made of different sized stones. Larger ones are mixed in with medium, small and even pebble sized rocks.
Plants are usually incorporated into waterfall designs. In the woods, soil deposits in and near the falls would have created pockets for plant seeds to lodge. Plants that are suited to the specific conditions of the area will grow well. If the waterfall is in a damp, shady area, you might find such plants as ferns. If the area happens to be sunny, those plants that like the sun will survive. Plants that are indigenous to the area will
be part of the landscape as that is where they grow best.
All of these ideas can be used for various types of waterfalls. One thing that is good to remember is that all waterfall designs look best when it appears that water is tumbling down from a higher eleva-tion. You don’t want an unnatural mound sitting
there. This is true whether you are creating a waterfall for a swimming pool, pond or stream.
If you are lucky enough to have property that slopes down towards the area you are
going to be viewing the waterfall from, you will have the best type of water feature. Sometimes you can tweak your viewpoint to take advantage of this. For example, if your land slopes towards your house, you will be able to see the waterfall clearly from your home. However, if your land slopes towards the rear yard, this is not so. In this case, you might want to add a special sitting area in which you can view the waterfall from.
There are many different stone types and colors. Some are fieldstone, found in the woods. Others come from mines. I mentioned above mixing different kinds of flat stones. Mixing stone types or colors can be done, although the majority should be similar. If you think about mountains and geology, similar stones collect in certain areas. Sizes, however, should definitely be mixed.
These are things that you can mimic when creating your own waterfall. Try to create your waterfall as you might see it in the woods or mountains. It will be more successful this way.

Waterfall Designs -
Page 18 Issue #36- Sept. 10/09
Get your creative juice flowing and design the look you want. Here are some ideas to get you started...
For bathroom floor tile, you can’t go wrong with ceramic tile. Every bathroom is a wet place. What with wet people standing around plus overflowing toilets and splashing in sinks, you need a floor surface that’s up to the challenge. Ceramic surfaces are the best choice in a wet place.
You can rest assured that floors will be wet. With many ceramic tile surfaces you don’t need to worry much about slipping though. That’s not true for all tiles. But many choices are really not slippery which is a big plus in any bath or shower.
If you’re always looking to save time, the right choice of bathroom tile can help with that too. Ceramic surfaces are easy to maintain and difficult to damage. Just an occasional clean-up is about all that’s required. An occasional application of a sealer will make it even easier. Just a few minutes a week with a simple mop up and the floor looks good as new.
Ceramic tiles also are a perfect medium for your creative juices. That’s so because the tile comes in every shape and size imaginable. You can even hand paint tiles or buy them already hand painted too. Add different types of tile in combination to add interest. Plus you can use tile not only on the floor, but on walls and even ceilings. Plus don’t forget tile showers and tile tub surrounds as well.
Now when you shop for bathroom floor tile, you’ll quickly notice the great variation in prices. Beware of really cheap tiles in your search. Here’s why. Often discount tile will vary greatly in size. You can use tile like this to make a beautiful project. The problem is it takes much more time to get the best fit. So stick to your budget, but get quality materials.
One of the most visible parts of a tile floor is the grout that covers the gap between tiles. You can choose tinted colored grout depending on your preference and the color scheme of the floor. The grout color can either draw attention to itself or blend in with the tile. It’s your preference. It’s helpful after the grout has cured to apply a sealer. The sealer maintains a fresh, clean look for a longer time.
Before you look for bathroom floor tiles, take some time to sketch out a few designs using different colors and positioning to see what you like. By knowing what you like before you leave home, you’ll find it simpler to make choices and get the right materials. Think about the size of tile as well as the best arrangement for accent tiles. Plus are there accent pieces you wish to include?
Of course you can go with the same tile all over the floor and that’s fine. If you’re looking for flair and personality, create a design with several different tiles and you’ll be pleased.
Also consider a design theme you like. For example, bright ocean colors like blues and greens can give a soothing, peaceful and airy look and feel. Then again, light pastels and floral motifs add a Victorian air. The style you choose can be further enhanced by the accessories and fixtures you add.
Ceramic bathroom floor tile can really add a luxury touch to any bathroom. It’s luxury with a practical side too. Your floor can be easy to maintain and long lasting and trouble free too. Add a tile floor and it can be the base for changing the entire look and theme of a bathroom. On top of that you can do the work yourself if you choose.

• The Falls at Niagara are about 12,000 years old
Falls were formed when melting glaciers formed massive fresh-water lakes (the Great Lakes) one of which (Lake Erie) ran downhill toward another (Lake Ontario). The rushing waters carved out a river in their descent and at one point passed over a steep cliff like formation (the Niagara escarpment). From the original falls going over the Niagara Escarpment, the water began to wear its way back up the river. The path that it left is known today as the Niagara
Gorge (a deeply-cut and very scenic river path).
• Currently, Niagara Falls wears its way back another approximately 1 foot/year.
• The Niagara River flows at approximately 35 miles/hour (56.3 kilometers/hour).
• There are actually two waterfalls in Niagara, the American Falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
It is the combination of height and water flow that makes Niagara Falls so beautiful.
• The Horseshoe Falls are 180 feet (57 meters) high and allow 6 million cubic feet (168,000 cubic meters) of water over the crestline every minute during peak daytime tourist hours (that is about a million bathtubs full of water every minute!).
• Man-made attractions of Niagara Falls include Maid of the Mist, Table Rock Scenic Tunnels, Spanish Aero Car, Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum, Marineland, Casino Niagara, IMAX Theatre, and the new Butterfly Conservatory.

Following healthy eating guidelines and improving your diet is all very well, but what if the food itself is causing you a problem? Eating healthy food will boost your immune system, and give more energy and vitality - but only if the food itself is wholesome. There are many food borne bacteria and diseases which can cause food poisoning or worse which are a real threat to our health and wellbeing. As we move into the summer months we have to be even more careful as we tend to eat in a more relaxed environment and food preparation is handled differently. There are a number of basic precautions you can take to prevent any problems. Most safety tips when handling, preparing, and storing food are just common sense, but it is surprising how quickly that can fly out of the window when the sun comes out.
Food temperatures, both when cooking and storing, are most important. It is sensible to use a thermometer in order to make sure that you meat is reaching a high enough temperature inside. Some meats, such as beef, can be served rare with no problems, but pork and chicken must be thoroughly cooked through - especially if you are barbecuing. This will ensure that any bacteria will be safely destroyed. In the case of burgers and other loaf meats that have been ground or minced and formed into patties, they must be cooked right through.
When your food has been cooked, you should continue to watch the temperatures at which you store it. The common sense rule is hot means hot, and cold means cold! Cold foods should be stored at less than 40F and hot food should be maintained at a temperature of no less than 140 F for safety and good health. When cooling food for refrigeration make sure you cover it well and put it in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking. Adequate care also needs to be taken when thawing food from the freezer, whether you have just brought it home from the supermarket or taken it out of your own freezer. Place the food in a bowl or dish that will hold any water that comes out of the food to prevent contamination and thaw it slowly in the fridge rather than at room temperature. If you use your microwave to defrost food, make sure it is thoroughly
defrosted before you start to cook or eat it.
Cross contamination is probably the single biggest problem in food preparation. Bacteria can easily cross from one food item to another in any number of ways. One of the biggest culprits is the chopping board, cooked and raw foods should never be cut on the same board and you should keep meat, fish, dairy and vegetables separate. I use different colored boards - all of which can go in the dishwasher. Always use clean dishes and containers for different foods and make sure they are properly washed - not just swished under a tap. Make sure you use different utensils for each type of food - knives are the worst culprits. If you use a knife to cut raw chicken and then use it again on cooked food the bacteria from the raw chicken will almost certainly transfer to the cooked food which then has the potential to make you very ill. Always clear as you go in the kitchen, keeping your work area clean, wiped and dry. The most important food safety guideline is to wash your hands regularly in hot soapy water. Putting them briefly under a running tap does not count! Each time you touch any raw foods, you should make sure that no bacteria remains on your hands.
These simple precautions will ensure that you and your family enjoy your healthy food and stay healthy after you have eaten it. Healthy Eating Guidelines will serve you well in terms of your diet and common sense will make sure you get the most benefit from the delicious foods that you prepare.

from Weber’s Real Grilling™ by Jamie PurviancePrep Time: 15 minutesMarinating Time: Grilling Time: 16 to 23 minutesSalsa• 2 ears of sweet corn, shucked• Extra virgin olive oil• 1 large clove garlic• 1 ripe avocado, roughly chopped• 1/4 cup nely chopped fresh basil• 6 green onions, white and light green parts only, nely chopped• 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 4 New York strip steaks, about 8 ounces each and 1 inch thick
Rub• 1 teaspoon paprika• 1/2 teaspoon pure chile powder• 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt• 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1. Lightly brush or spray the corn with oil. Grill over direct medium heat (350°F to 450°F), with the lid closed as much as possible, until browned in spots and tender, 10 to 15 min-utes, turning occasionally. Allow to cool. Cut the kernels off the cobs and place in a medium bowl. Scrape the cobs with the back of a knife to release the milky juices. In a food processor, purée half the kernels, all of the milky juices, and the garlic, and then transfer the mixture back to the bowl with the remaining corn kernels. Add the rest of the salsa ingredients. Stir to combine.
2. Allow the steaks to stand at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before grilling. Lightly brush or spray the steaks on both sides with oil.
3. In a small bowl combine the rub ingredients. Season the steaks on both sides with the rub. Grill over direct high heat, with the lid closed as much as possible, until cooked to desired doneness, 6 to 8 minutes for medium rare, turning once (if are-ups occur, move the steaks temporarily over indirect high heat). Basically, the difference between the herb and spice families is that herbs grow in temperate climates while spices come from the tropics. The leaves of herbs usually provide the seasonings, but the leaves of spice plants are seldom used for the same purpose. Herbs and spices accent and complement food, and can enhance the flavor to all kinds of recipes.
Since the strength of herbs and spices varies so much, it can be difficult to know the exact quantities you should use. Start with just a small amount, 1/2 teaspoon of mild herbs and 1/4 teaspoon of strong herbs or spices. Taste and experiment with the amounts used, changing the amount to fit your own tastes.
Essential oils are the source of the characteristic aroma and flavor given off by all herbs and spices. These oils are released either by grinding, as with a pestle and mortar, or by fine chopping. This is one of the reasons that herbs and spices that are bought already ground lose their flavor more quickly than those that are whole seeds or leaves. Replace your herbs and spices as soon as they lose their scent. Keep them away from light by storing in a dark place and in dark, solid containers.
HERBS
Some herbs are so popular or easy to grow that they can be bought throughout all of the seasons. Parsley is a good example of one of these herbs. These herbs are very easy to grow, and can be planted in window boxes or pots on the patio.
Some of the more popular herbs are parsley, basil, dill, mint, sage, tarragon, savory and thyme. I bet you considered most of these herbs spices, didn’t you?
SPICES
Spices were an important ingredient used in the Middle Ages. True spices come from tropical plants so are not normally grown by the home gardener. They are the seeds of fruits, the fleshy covering of the fruits, the unopened flower buds, the roots, barks or berries. They can be sweet, like nutmeg and cinnamon, or peppery like black pepper, ginger and cloves. When cooking with spices pay attention to the odor as well as the taste buds in determining the exact amount needed for a recipe. Your personal taste will dictate how much of a spice a dish needs.
Many cooks like to purchase “whole” spices and grind them just prior to adding them to a recipe. Spices that are freshly ground are much more full-flavored than those that are already ground and put in containers for marketing to grocery stores.
Some popular spices include allspice, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, ginger, mace, nutmeg, dried peppers (chili, cayenne, Tabasco, paprika), saffron, curry, sesame and vanilla. Again, spices should be stored in a dark , cool cupboard or pantry.
Vanilla, although it is not a “dried” spice, comes from the vanilla bean, which comes from an orchid (of all things). In ancient times, it was used only as a flavoring for hot chocolate, but now is used in many different recipes to enhance flavor.
Herbs and spices can be extremely useful in creating delicious meals. Remember to store them properly and replace with fresh when their scent becomes weak.

Almost everyone on the planet has heard of Chardonnay, in fact it is so popular that some people even name their children after it.
Chardonnay is commonly ordered as a type of wine from bars and restaurants but it is in fact the name of the most popular and possibly the most versatile grape in the world.
Almost all white Burgundy from Bourgogne Blanc to Chablis is made from 100% chardonnay grapes. The Chardonnay grape is also the mainstay in many types of
champagne and is now even being used in Spain to make Cava.
The Chardonnay grape is so popular because it is easy to grow – that is probably why it is championed by so many grape producers. It can also be crafted into many different types of wines. Perhaps it is also so popular because it has little indig-enous character of its own and instead displays the characteristics of the soil and climate where it is grown. Char-donnay has a propensity for acid and glycerine which is responsible for giving it a velvety texture – this is what is important in this type of grape. It is this texture which makes it so versatile when it comes to producing wine. It can be crafted into fresh lemony unoaked wine or aged in barrels to produce wine for a much richer palate. It is often seen as a cheap wine that is not worth trying but remember these grapes are used in top quality Chablis and Champagne, so don’t dismiss this grape and wine out of hand.
Chardonnay now comes in a host of different styles – gone are the days when all the bottles were heavily oaked, there is a chardonnay suitable for every palate and pocket and because of the versatility of the grape from almost every wine producing country in the world.
So which are the types of Chardonnay to look out for? What do
they taste like? Here are a couple of generalisations to get you on your way. Of course the best way to find out which one is your favourite is to get your glass out and start tasting your way around a few of the bottles!
France produces a ream of different Chardonnays. For pure unoaked Chardonnay look for a Chablis labelled unoaked. This is great with fish as it is delicate and unobtrusive. For a clean flavoured wine with a subtle fruit aroma look to the Meursault and Montrachet regions
California produces wines that work well with grilled seasoned foods. The Napa valley produces great oaky fruity wines which are ideal for outdoor eating and drinking. For an even fruitier riper flavour try something from the Santa Barbara region, these highly flavoured wines will even taste great with grilled meats.
For a Chardonnay that is intensely flavoured and almost best drunk without food head to Australia and try something from the Hunter Valley. This tropically flavoured wine is great chilled and shared with a friend.
There are so many different types of Chardonnay from so many different countries that you are bound to find something to suit your palate. So what are you waiting for?

Dear Reena,Can dandelions be thrown into the compost? Love your books! Gertha Hi Gertha,I can honestly say it depends on who you ask. Some gardeners say that hot and colder composting kills most weed seeds including dandelions. Another group of gardeners will tell you that you are just asking for a yellow field of dandelions if you add them to your compost. Decomposing dandelions provide mineral rich composted matter and nitrogen to the soil. It is true that if you add fresh dandelions to the top of your compost pile you will quickly notice a formation of puffy white dandelion seeds therefore, it is important to turn your compost pile regularly. Doing this will force dandelions to the center of the pile where they breakdown amongst temperatures exceeding 55 °C (131 °F) for several days, and do not survive as seeds. Did you know? Dandelions have has been historically considered one of the most edible of plants in the vegetable gardens. The Celts ate them and introduced them to the Roman legions when Caesar invaded the north. AngloSaxons and the Normans used them as a preventative for scurvy. It was a staple food and medicine (diuretic) in the monastery gardens of the middle ages. Puritan settlers brought seeds to North America as a common garden vegetable. The moral of the story, if you have never treated your dandelions with weed killer you can treat your tummy to a healthy dose of dandelion salad. Hi Reena,What do you recommend to keep crickets away and from coming inside that is safe to use? Thank you. Enjoy reading your tips! Don and Dolores Dear Don and Dolores,Well it sounds as though you would prefer not to keep crickets as pets like some people. It also sounds like you care about not hurting the little critters who are invading your home. It is true that some crickets feed on a wide variety of fabrics, foods and paper products. Cotton, linen, wool, rayon, nylon, silk and furs are susceptible, along with soiled fabrics, sizing from wallpaper, glue from bookbinding’s, fruit, vegetables, meat and even other crickets. An occasional cricket or two in the home usually presents no serious problem. However, large populations may congregate around lights at night, making areasunattractive.Sanitation is the most important means of eliminating nuisance crickets. Keep all areas in and around buildings free of moisture, dense vegetation and weeds (1 foot band next to foundation). Mow lawns, cut weeds, and clean up garbage collection areas. Remove piles of bricks, stones, rotting wood and other debris. Caulk and seal all cracks and crevices, especially near the ground level at basement windows and doorways. Keep crickets from entering your home: Using a garden hand sprayer combine eucalyptus oil and water. Spray around foundation and doorways and reapply after rain. Another option is to spray water and dried banana leaves where crickets tend to congregate, this does not cut down on crickets but it does cut down on the chirping You can also create a no-kill trap for crickets. Using an empty 2-liter pop bottle. Place the lid on and cut the bottom part of the bottle off. Put dry banana peel inside. As you lure
crickets into the bottle, you can catch them and bring them outside.Did you know? Only male crickets sing (chirp) unlike human who use their lips to sing, male crickets “sing” using a pair of their front wings. Dear Reena,I am on a trip with my family and only have ‘Household Solutions 3 with Green Alternatives’ with me (the other two books are at home). I have a dog who chewed a gel pen which then exploded all over the carpet, how can I remove the stain? Would you suggest the ‘Fantastic Carpet Cleaning Recipe’ or just rubbing alcohol, or something else? Derek Dear Derek,Yes, either rubbing alcohol, hairspray or a mixture of Oxy Clean and water. Just be sure to test everything on an inconspicuous area first as you don’t want to discolor the carpet. If you notice that ink is being transferred to the cloth that you are cleaning with keep doing what you are doing because you are on the right track. Next wash the area with dish soap and water. Blot with a generous amount of water and let air dry. Last resort; paint thinner but test first and rinse well after because it does smell. Dear Reena,I really enjoy your column, you have great solutions and I’m hoping you have one for me. I did the unthinkable and spilt nail polish on my carpet, can I get it out? Or should I just call my insurance company? Thank you, Faye Hello Faye,The “unthinkable” is a lot more common than you might think. Before trying anything else, soak the area with a generous amount of white vinegar. Leave for one hour and blot. Next pour one quarter teaspoon dish soap and one cup of water onto the area. Blot to lift remaining color. Let me know how it goes and we can determine if we need Plan B.

Just about to go out on the town but your blouse is wrinkled? Lynda Baxter sent in this solution: Use a flat hair iron to remove the crease. Heat the iron and insert fabric, smooth fabric with the heat and voila.
No more smelly feet. Wash your feet and dry them well. Apply deodorant to feet bottoms before putting on socks. Also soak your feet in vinegar for five minutes nightly. Airing out shoes and pouring a bit of baking soda inside shoes also helps.

Perennials are one of my favorite types of plants to have in the garden.
Perennials are flowering plants that go dormant in the winter and return each spring. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of different types of perennials. Perennials have as many different blooming seasons, colors, textures and sizes as there are types. This is what makes perennials so fabulous. Complete gardens can be created from using strictly perennials
By planting different types of perennials in your gardens you can have color from the first of spring until a hard frost in the fall.
Some perennials are grown for their striking and beautiful foliage, others for their flower. Some perennials will only bloom once per season, but the show is spectacular! Many perennials will bloom repeatedly throughout the growing season. Dead-heading the spent flowers will encourage more to bloom. Use a good, sharp pair of pruning shears or garden scissors to remove the spent foliage.
Adding compost or organic fertilizer twice per season (spring and fall) your perennials will be lush and beautiful. After a few seasons you will be able to spread these perennials around in your own yard and share them with friends. Another added benefit of perennials, they multiply! Most perennials can be divided easily. Choose a cool day for dividing your plants and make sure the plants get plenty of water, so they will recover quickly.
Planting perennials for the best show...plant them in groups. By planting a few (or more) in the same area you will end up with waves of color in your
garden. This is striking. If you would like a more informal look spread them out, so you have color here and there.
When creating a perennial garden, as is a good idea with any garden, lay out the design and place the plants before putting them in the ground. This will give you a good idea of how the garden will look when it is finished. It is easier to make changes before all the holes are dug. Check the information tags to find out the requirements of each plant. If you plant the perennials where they will be happy, the results will astound you.
I even use perennials in my planters. They make an interesting and unusual look in pots and even hanging baskets. I only use annuals as an accent tucked here or there in my planters. This is also a time saver in the spring, your pots will grow all by themselves.
You will get many compliments on your planters, because they are not the same old Impatiens or Petunias. There are many plants that are only peren-nial in warm climates. That’s ok! If you like it, grow it. In the fall simply pull up the plant, (many of these have bulbs or tubers) and store it in a cool dry place for the winter.
Using perennials will allow you to use your creativity and your imagination to create the garden of your dreams.

The majority of North Americans consider autos as their second biggest asset of after
homes. Studies show that the average cost of regular car is around $28,715. Therefore, it
makes logic to get your car cleaned annually to preserve as well as maintain it. Technical
experts say that aesthetic maintenance of autos is important to maintain their value as well
as integrity. Hence, here are few cleaning tips for your autos.
Routine maintenance such as washing, waxing helps to preserve the paint of your autos,
thereby helping you to restore its polished look for long time. Most people tend to ignore
tires as well as wheels of the autos, while washing the car, which is not a good thing.
Brake dust, road grime and salt get collected on tires and wheels and if you do not remove
it properly, it leads to staining as well as corrosion of aluminum alloys and steel alloys of the
wheels.
Thus, you need to remove the debris, while cleaning the autos. Use pH-balanced cleaning
solution to prevent any damage to the finishing as well as the composition of wheels. Such
cleaning solutions contain strong shine and cleaning agents, but they are mild as soaps and
safely clean cars and work on all sort of wheels.
Important Tips:
Cleaning tips for your autos also include giving priority to safety features of autos. You
need to check whether your car glass offers the same clear visibility as that of when you
purchased it. If not, then you will have to replace the glass. Change the wipers of your autos
every year.
Use hydrophobic repellent on the windshield, because it dramatically gives clear vision of the
roadway. It also seals off microscopic pores in the glass.
However, regular maintenance of the auto does not mean that you only take care of the ex-
terior of the vehicle. Cleaning tips for your autos also include looking after the maintenance
of other parts of car. With the rising cost of gas, many people auto owners are turning
towards engine maintenance, because a dirt stuffed engine consumes huge quantity of
gasoline.
Some people use cheap gas in the autos. If you use low quality gasoline in your vehicle,
it degrades the engine and its parts. So, first avoid using cheap quality fuel, fill the tank in
some reputed and credible gas station.
Cleaning The Gunk Deposit In Engine:
If your fuel system has gunk deposits, one way to remove the slug is by using fuel additive.
Additives clear off deposits of gunk from combustion chambers, fuel injector and intake
valves of an auto. Next, treating the interiors of your auto with fuel additives actively cleans
all other components too.
It restores the optimum performance of your vehicle and helps to cut down the fuel
consumption. It also protects your vehicle from future gunk buildups, reduces the emission
of carbon monoxide.
Thus, incorporating these cleaning tips for your autos in your annual auto cleaning routine
and execution of regular maintenance are two crucial steps to avert the deterioration of
your auto.

It’s natural for new car owners to obsess over their cars, especially if you’re the kind of driver who likes to stand out amongst the rest of the cars on the highway, or rich enough to change cars like you would shirts or cell phones. Now, we can’t all get regular paint jobs, whether it’s the full body type or just a nice airbrush painting on your hood. But you can still assert your personality on your automobile by using car decals.
Using decals to spruce up your car is a new and exciting way to design your car. Decals are so varied that you’ll most likely be overwhelmed by the choices you have. There are big decals that can cover the entire length of your car and then there are decals that are just about the size of your hand. There are practically hundreds of ways you can jazz up your car with decals. With decals, your car can truly be an extension of your self. There are now shops that specialize in designing car decals and applying them on the car. There are decal kits available that are highly customiz-able too.
Window GraphicsThese car decals are the see-through decals placed on a car’s glass windows. Basically, these car decals help block sunlight. They also help prevent a car’s interior from premature fading. Lastly, these car decals offer privacy. Car decals for windows are made
of micro-perforated sheets (similar to vinyl or latex). You can still see the road from the inside of your car, but people outside will only see the design.
Fullside DecalsThese car decals are artistic designs pasted on the side(s) of a car. Think of the cars in the film, The Fast and the Furious. Fullside car decals come in a variety of designs. Take your pick: flames, patriotic, tribal art, colors of the European flag, comic characters, checkered geometrics, animals and more. You can have your own design if you wish even. A number of fullside car decal designs come with matching car decals for the hood.
Hood DecalsThese car decals are big stickers placed right on the center top of the car’s hood. If you want huge and elaborate hood decals for your car, you can go for the hood decals designed to be mirror images of each other and are spread out over the entire hood of the car. Take note that hood decals are car wash safe. If you go with the magnetic type of hood decals, you can change the design every month or as often as you want.
It doesn’t matter what color your car is, fullside and hood decals come in many different colors that will complement your current paint job. Aside from the more standard colors of black, white, red and Olympic blue, stickers also come in colors like magenta, teal, yellow, beige, gun metal grey, sapphire blue, dark green, burgundy, teal, lime green, orange, even gold and silver. Given all these choices, the possibilities of owning a “new” car every now and then are endless.

When you are looking to tow a trailer, attach a cargo carrier or essentially connect one vehicle to another, you’ll find that you need to look for the right trailer hitch. After a brief consultation, though, you’ll realize that trailer hitches come in a wide variety of classes and that each class is meant for a different function. When you are try-ing to find the right hitch for your situation, you’ll find that there are several different things that you need to keep in mind when it comes to what class is best for your purposes. Remember that for the definitions below, GTW refers to gross trailer weight, which is the weight of the trailer when fully loaded, not when it is sitting empty.
Class IClass I trailer hitches are meant for the lightest towing duties. They tend to be rated up to 2000 pounds GTW, and they tend to be fitted with a draw bar or a ball mount where the accessories will be attached to the hitch itself. You’ll find that they will work with any class I accessory and that they will usually use a 1/2” pin to secure the ball mount in place. A Class I trailer hitch is ideal for hitch adapters, cargo carriers or bike racks.
Class IIClass II hitch adaptors tend to be made for light towing duty, and as such, they will be rated at 3500 pounds GTW. As the name implies, they can be used for Class I or Class II accessories, and thy will use a removable drawbar. Keep in mind that it will work with a Class I and II hitch balls, but that a 2 and 5/16” hitch ball will not work in this setup.
Class IIIClass III trailer hitches are also known as round receiver hitches and they will be rated up to 6000 pounds GTW. There is usually a 2” by 2” receiver opening, and you’ll find that these hitches tend to have the most options when you are looking at things like bike racks and cargo carriers. You’ll also find that you’ll be able to make sure that you can simply carry more gear. When you are looking at Class III trailer hitches, you’ll find that the ballmounts can be sold separate, and you’ll find that there are many available which can ensure that your trailer rides level with the tow
vehicle in question.
Class IVClass IV will more or less duplicate what has been said for Class III except that it will be rated for an impressive 12,000 pounds GTW and that it is mean to carry accessories that are Class III and below. Make sure that you get your trailer weighed appropriately, as overworking the trailer hitch can have disastrous consequences.
Class VClass V trailer hitches have a system in place that is meant to handle up to 17,000 GW without a problem, and you’ll find that a Class V trailer hitch is meant to take care of class III accessory as long as an adapter is in place. Ball mounts are frequently sold separately, and that this class of trailer hitch is designed for heavy duty trucks and vans.

Learning the CrossbowThe major difference between the compound bow and crossbow is the difference in the speed with which an archer or hunter can learn to shoot. The crossbow can be mastered in under an hour. The biggest difficulty is making sure the bow is cocked perfectly straight so the shot does not go off kilter. A few minutes spent talking with a bow dealer will provide all the shooter needs to know in terms of purchasing an arrow and a broadhead.
Learning the Compound BowMastering the compound bow can take quite a bit more time than learning to fire the crossbow. Perhaps the hardest facet of this type of bow-hunting is getting within 20 yards of the prey. With a crossbow, the shooter can be further away from the animal and still make an effective shot.
Shooting the CrossbowOne of the major complaints about shooting this bow is that the projectile fires off more like a gun and that it maintains a flat straight course instead of bowing or arching like other bows. However the compound bow also has about the same trajectory; more flat than arched.
The KillCrossbows behave like all other bows when it comes to taking down the target. The shot can be ruined just like the compound bow if the arrow deflects off of bone or hits some brush on the way to its target. In addition all bows kill by bleeding out the animal. There is no difference in the “how” of any bow.
The Weight of the CrossbowUnlike the compound bow that has its weight distributed fairly evenly, this bow is heavy at the front of the weapon. As a result you cannot hold it in position at your shoulder ready to shoot for a very long time. After a minute or two your arms will start to tremor from the strain and you will be forced to lower your weapon.
Cold Weather HuntingWhen hunting in frigid weather the advantage goes to the crossbow. It is very important to
bundle up to prevent frostbite when hunting in the winter. However, so much clothing limits movement and the compound bow requires physical steps to cock, aim and shoot. In addition most compound bows work best while sitting up in tree, subject to the wind and cold. With a crossbow you can cock the weapon and prepare to fire. You can get down out of the tree and away from wind and hunt on the ground. When you see your target all that needs to be done is a quick aim and fire. There is no cocking of this weapon as it as already been done ahead of time.
Handicapped HuntingPerhaps one of the biggest advantages of the crossbow is the ability of those with physical ailments to hunt. The work perfectly for archers or hunters in wheelchairs as the vertical length of the bow is not an issue. In addition the cocking aids that can be purchased and attached to the bow to help get the weapon cocked and ready for firing. This type of bow is also advantageous for people with bad back, arthritis or neck injuries.

If you’re new to paintball, here are some useful FAQs that can help you get to know the game better.
What is Paintball?Paintball is one of the emerging sports brought about by people’s interest in simulated combat games. In this sport, players are divided into teams
where the primary aim is to eliminate the opponents by shooting them with paintball guns. Paintball gun pellets are breakable gelatin balls filled with paint. These paintballs are usually shot from carbon dioxide powered guns or with the use of air compression.
The first game of paintball was played on June 27, 1980 in New Hampshire. This sport is different from any other sport because it does not require the players to have di-rect contact with each other.
Paintball has a large following, with 10 million Americans playing the sport religiously. In terms of safety, paintball is considered one of the safest sports with fewer injuries compared to soccer, basketball and baseball.
Paintball can also be played outdoors or indoors.
How did it start?Back then paintballs are used to mark trees from a distance and to mark cows. Initially, it was made from wax, but it was not durable so makers switched to soft gel capsules to store the paint. Soft gel capsules will be able to stand the projectile (from the shooting) and at the same time will
break easily upon contact with anything.
The game was formulated to simulate the act of hunting down of animals with the use of paint guns instead of real hunting guns.
What is the equipment needed? There are different variations of the game and of course, different equip-ment is needed. But the following are the basic equipment that needs to be used to ensure safety during a paintball game.
Mask – This protects the player’s face not only from paintball hits but also whenever the player falls down face first.
Paintball Marker-Paintballs used to mark or ‘take down’ other players.
If you are just a beginner when it comes to paintball, get ready to shell out more or less $100 for the basic equipment. If you’re on the advanced levels, there are tools out there to improve your speed, accuracy of shoot-ing and comfort. If you don’t want to spend too much on equipment and just want to give the sport a try, you can choose to rent equipment from the paintball field where you are playing and get ready to spend anywhere between $10 to $80 per day.
What are the different types of paintball games? The simplest and most traditional paintball game is to take out the opposing team’s players one by one. The game has evolved from a so-called hunting game to different variations. Some players incorporate a goal for the game. An example of which is getting the opponent’s flag to win the game. Another variation is ‘king of the hill’ in which the teams try to get the base of the opposing team in order to win. The team which gets to hold the opponent’s base for the longest time wins.

Fish eat bugs, plain and simple. So why not try to catch a fish by mimicking a bug? Thats what fly fishermen have been doing for centuries. Fly fishing began as a method to catch salmonids, which include mostly salmon and trout. Today fishermen use this method to attract a variety of fish ranging from carp to saltwater fish off the coast of caribbean islands.
Fly fishing differs from traditional lure fishing in a couple of different ways. First of all, the fly fisherman has a lon-ger, lighter rod and a heavier line. The fly fisherman will use his lines weight to cast his incredibly light weight bait: a hand tied fly, whereas lure fisherman will use the weight of their bait to cast their line.
The fly fisherman will aim to mimic a live bug by slapping their line against the water, causing a commotion on the top of the water and hopefully attracting fish to their realistically made flies. The flies come in a variety of colors and styles, ranging from felt and feather construction designs that look like frogs, minnows, and even shrimp. Additionally, flies come in two varieties: dry and wet. The dry fly, like it states, floats on top of the water and does not tip below the waters surface, while the wet fly will find itself submerged underwater thanks to the fishermens drastic cast.
Fly fishing is a genuine art. It takes time, practice, and skill to make the task look both doable and easy. A fly fisherman will start with his rod in front of him. He will hold a length of string in
his free hand, and then swing the road behind him, directly to an angle behind his head. Then he will swing the rod forward to an approximate 45 degree angle, allowing the free line to move forward and slap against the water. As stated before, he hopes that this disturbance will mimic that of a bug on the waters surface and draw his food to his line.
Fly fishermen have a variety of methods and terms for casting. Different types of casts are used for different reasons. For example, a fly fisherman may want to use a false cast to draw a different kind of lazy fish to them.
The right kind of fly will also make a difference to a fisherman. Some fisherman scratch their creative itch by creating their own flies while others rely on the experts to tie them the best kind of fish, egg, worm, or mouse for their fly.
Regardless of how they cast or what they use for a fly or even where they fish, every fly fisherman will cite the incredible benefits of fly fishing with relaxation topping out the list.

(NC)—The Canadian Diabetes Association reports that more than two million Canadians have diabetes. Though there are three types – type 1, type 2, and gestational – 90 per cent of sufferers live with type 2 diabetes. This condition occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use the insulin that is produced. Type 2 diabetes typically develops in adulthood and, increasingly, in children living in high-risk populations. There is no cure for the disease, so healthy lifestyle choices are the best bet for prevention.
A healthy meal plan, weight control and regular physical activity are keys to preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition indicates that frequent nut consumption leads to a reduced risk of developing diabetes and heart disease; this result can be attributed to the
fact that the nuts have a good nutritional profile, are high in monounsaturated fatty acids and are good sources of vegetable protein.
It’s been proven that munching on peanuts can reduce your risk of heart disease; newer studies show that eating a handful of peanuts or a few tablespoons of peanut butter five times a week can lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
In a nutshell, peanuts and peanut butter should be included in a healthy and balanced diet, not only for their delicious taste, but also because of their potential to help you lead a healthier life.
More information and great-tasting recipes featuring peanuts and peanut butter are available online at www.peanubureau.ca.
