English language summaries of last month's top Kyushu area news stories. 1

PC Saga Prefecture Soliciting AdsStarting this August, Saga Prefecture began soliciting private-sector companies to place paid advertising on the screens of the PCs prefectural employees use at work. About 4,500 computers may wind up with advertising on their screens as a result. The prefecture expects to gain about 800,000 yen in revenue annually from the ads. Shiga Prefecture is already selling ad space on its computers, but Saga Prefecture will be the first in Kyushu to do it.

30 Saibu Gas Posts First LossFukuoka City-based Saibu Gas revealed that it expects to suffer a non-consolidated loss for the year ending March 2009 due to skyrocketing liquid natural gas prices. This will be the company's first current loss in 30 years. The company originally projected 3 billion yen in profit, but has revised that downwards to a loss of several billion yen, which would make it the worst loss in the company's history.

Hard Times for Kyushu Theme ParksA Fukuoka City-based association for promoting Kyushu theme parks has compiled statistics for the number of visitors to the primary regional theme parks in FY 2007. The 12 member facilities reported a 3.5% year-on-year decline to 11.38 million visitors. This was attributed to higher gasoline prices and the impact of accidents at some parks.

Outlook Bleak for Saga AirportJuly 28 was the 10th anniversary of the Saga Airport, yet the outlook for the airport turning a profit is bleak. In FY 2007, the airport had roughly 280,000 users on three daily round-trip flights to Haneda in Tokyo and two to Itami in Osaka. The low number of flights forces the prefecture to provide several hundred million yen a year in financial support. As of FY 2006, the cumulative debt had swelled to more than 2.5 billion yen. An upturn is not expected, even with the addition of another round-trip flight to Haneda in November.

Saibu Gas to Raise PricesFukuoka City-based Saibu Gas has decided to raise its rates due to climbing liquid natural gas prices. A formal decision is expected to be made in August and take effect sometime before the end of the year. This will be the first rate adjustment since April 2006.

10%Kyushu Exports - 10% of National TotalMoji Customs has released trade statistics for the Kyushu economic sphere (Kyushu with Yamaguchi and Okinawa Prefectures) for the period from January through June of this year. Total exports rose 8.8% from the year-before period to 4.1851 trillion yen, while imports soared 24.7% to 4.6841 trillion yen. Exports have now risen for 13 consecutive six-month periods. Regional exports during the period accounted for 10% of the national total, rising from 9.7% for the previous six-month period. It is the first time exports have accounted for 10% of the national total since these statistics were first kept in 1979.

Fuel Prices Hurt Kyushu FerriesT h e K y u s h u L o n g - D i s t a n c e F e r r y Association reported the results of its survey of six companies with eight routes starting and ending in Kyushu for the ratio of fuel costs to operating expenses. The survey shows a sharp increase compared to four years ago. For some routes the ratio has doubled. All the companies are considering fare increases in either September or October.

Alliance to Reuse Rare Metals AnnouncedSony Corp. and the city of Kitakyushu formally announced they would begin trials in September to launch an enterprise for the commercial recycling of rare metals. This is the first instance in Japan in which a manufacturer will be involved in the process from recovery of the materials to reinsertion in manufactured goods. During the trial, which will last for six months, recovery boxes will be placed in 60 locations in the city. Users will be able to discard their old digital cameras, e-dictionaries, and small games, which use rare metals, in the boxes.

Tagawa to Promote Coal CultureTagawa in Fukuoka Prefecture, formerly a major coal producing area, has teamed with scholars from the municipal museum in Kushiro, Hokkaido, to create regional development schemes that utilize the coal culture. Kushiro has the only operating coal mine in Japan today. Museum officials from Kushiro recently inspected the old facilities at a former Mitsui mine in Tagawa and discussed ways to help the city have it designated as a World Heritage site. They hope to extend the cooperation overseas in the future into a North-South Coal Exchange.

JR JR Soliciting Designs for Hakata StationJR Kyushu is soliciting designs for the ceramic tile art that will decorate the interior walls of the new Hakata Station building to open in 2011. Participants will be able to submit illustrations based on one of four themes: flowers, birds, fish, and leaves. The designs selected will be baked into Arita ceramic tiles for the walls and columns. Applications are open until September 26.

6 Kyushu Exports to Middle East SoarIn its analysis of trade statistics for FY 2007, the Kyushu Economic Research Center reports that exports from the region to the 14 countries and territories of the Middle East rose by about 60% over the past four years. The increase was particularly noticeable for truck t ires, industrial boilers, and recreational boats. The value of exports to the countries in the region totaled roughly 224.6 billion yen, a rise of 30% from the previous year.

Kyushu U. Develops New CatalystA research team at the Kyushu University C e n t e r f o r F u t u r e C h e m i s t r y h a s developed the world's first nickel catalyst for extracting electrons from water at a constant temperature and pressure. Platinum is essential for the use of fuel cells as energy sources in the future, but it is extremely expensive. Creating a catalyst using nickel, which is cheaper and of which there are abundant reserves, will be a big step toward the commercialization and spread of these fuel cells.

Best Denki to Expand to Middle EastConsumer electronics mass merchandiser Best Denki, headquartered in Fukuoka City, announced its intention to open a sales outlet in the Middle East this year. The store will be opened through a franchise agreement with a Kuwaiti consumer electronics sales company. They also plan to open stores in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. They will be the first Japanese company in this industry to open a store in that region.

42 Kyushu's Tallest Condo BuiltConstruction on Kyushu's tallest tower-type condominium complex has been completed in Fukuoka City's Higashi Ward on Island City. Named the Island Tower Sky Club, the 42-story building is 145 meters high. It houses a total of 409 dwelling units.

JR Tadao Ando to Design Station BuildingKumamoto Prefecture announced that an agreement has been reached with famed architect Tadao Ando to design the new building at the JR Kumamoto Station in conjunction with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen Line in 2011. The construction costs were originally estimated at 3 billion yen, but these were reduced to 2 billion yen after Ando, the prefecture, the city, and JR agreed. The railroad will sign a formal agreement with Ando shortly, and the building is expected to be completed in 2016.

800 Toyota Kyushu to Cancel Contracts Toyota Motors Kyushu announced that it planned to cancel the contracts of 800 seconded employees, nearly 10% of its workforce, due to scheduled production cutbacks . The product ion cutbacks are a result of high gas prices and the decelerating economy in the U.S., its largest overseas market. Nevertheless, it plans to rehire 500 of those employees to work on new models before the end of the year.

White Paper for Agriculture ReleasedT h e K y u s h u R e g i o n a l A g r i c u l t u r a l Administration Office released its White Paper for business year 2007 on the state of agriculture in the region. The paper notes that profitability is down in the livestock sector due to increased feed and fuel prices. The office calls for an increase in the self-sufficiency of feed to 25%, which would result in lower costs.

Karatsu Wants One Bento-Less DayIn an effort to halt the trend toward hollowing out in the central part of the city, Karatsu in Saga Prefecture has issued a directive to employees working at the main municipal offices asking them to refrain from bringing lunches with them to work one day a week. The objective is to have them patronize restaurants in the district. The city says the request is not compulsory. The local chamber of commerce points out that pedestrian traffic in the downtown Karatsu area exceeded 27,000 people a day in 1992, but has fallen to about 5,000 a day now. Nishinippon Newspaper.

100 678 10 Billion Yen-Companies in KyushuThe Fukuoka branch of credit rating firm Tokyo Shoko Research released figures ranking the companies in Kyushu and Okinawa Prefecture with sales of at least 10 billion yen on a non-consolidated basis. Their survey reveals there are now 678 such companies in the region, the second consecutive record high. The aggregate revenue of these companies totaled 25.9877 trillion yen, 2.5% higher than the year before and the fifth consecutive annual increase.

Takeda Tetsuya Gets Honorary DegreeThe Fukuoka University of Education in Munakata announced it would present an honorary degree to popular entertainer and Fukuoka City native Takeda Tetsuya, who withdrew from the school to pursue a show business career. It is the first time the university has awarded an honorary degree. The degree will be awarded at a ceremony in September, after which Takeda will lead a performance by his band and give a talk to the students.
