    Apostle by Roger Jones

Christian Music Ministries are coming to Bethesda on Saturday 23rd Octo-

ber 2010 to lead us in learning and performing this musical. We wouldlike to invite any members of your fellowship to join us for the day.

The music is suitable for anyone to sing and we are hoping to have a choir

of all ages and abilities. There is no need to be able to read music!

Instrumentalists will of course need to read music but will have parts writ-

    ten for their particular instrument.

This is an opportunity to learn some new songs, meet some new friends and

work together to achieve an end product in the course of one day.

If you have any further questions please contact us at the church of-

fice or at the address below.

    POSTCARDS FOR MAF

Now that the holiday season is coming to an end you might like to giveyour old post cards to me so that we can raise funds for the MissionAviation Fellowship, where every yearthousands of pounds are raisedthrough the sale of these from a MAFsupporter who sorts them and sellsthem to a dealer. Every year the MAFvolunteers manager writes with gratefulthanks to all the MAF reps forthe efforts we make in raising fundsfrom the collection of these post cards.

So please recycle them to me! Its good for the environment too! Please put them on the shelf by the hymn books in the vestibule if my-self or Judith are not about, because I come to the church regularlyduring the week and will collect them.

If you would like an example of the sterling work MAF do, then pleaseread MAF's " News to Share" elsewhere in this news letter.

    Thank you and God bless

    Tearfund News

Peru an example of ongoing development work.

Deysi is now 15, but she nearly died when she was eight. Poverty plus familybreakdown, oppression and despair means her hometown can be a danger-ous place for children. She lives in Huaycan, Peru.

Deysis family received no support from her alcoholic, mostly absent father.Desperate for income, her mother had no choice but to work overnight, leavingher children alone. One night, when Deysi was 8, she was left in charge. With

no electricity, the children lit candles but fell asleep before blowing them out andthe house burned to the ground. Fortunately, the children escaped unscathed. But the family knew things had to change.

That is when Deysi started going to church and persuaded her mother to gotoo.

Tearfunds Peruvian partner, Agape, works with vulnerable families throughthe church in Huaycan and Deysis family became part of their community sup-port programme. Deysi had little education so they taught her how to make &

sell baskets so she is able make a living for herself. They helped her sister tocope with school and providing uniforms and shoes for the other children to stayin school. They have worked with her mother, Emily, supporting and counsellingher and raising her self-esteem so that she is better able to care for her family. They also taught her how to make crafts that can be sold locally so that she isable to stay with her family. Emily asks, Pray for my nine kids. I want them tobe better than me, to have better lives.

Please pray for Gods protection over Emilys family and over all vulnerablefamilies like these. Ask that they will find hope in the local church. In Peru,

Agape is teaching churches to carry out community workshops like the onethat helped Deysis family, so that more people can be helped. Pray that Godwill bless these churches.

The above is an example of Tearfunds ongoing work, but of course the recentflood disaster in Pakistan on top of the Haiti earthquake, is making great de-mands on Tearfunds resources and experience. The recent generosity of ourfellowship and visitors has been a great blessing (more than 650 has beengiven to the Pakistan appeal). I give a brief update on the situation in Pakistanand Haiti below, but do look at the Tearfund website for more information.

    Pakistan

Backed by generous giving, Tearfunds partner SSEWA-Pak is getting emer-gency supplies to those who need it. Food and other basic items, such asstoves, pots and plastic sheets for shelter, have been given to 8,000 people inthe northern province of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and a similar number are beingassisted in the same way in Sindh, further south. The situation in Sindh is wors-ening.

Please pray that more flood survivors will be reached and helped by aid agen-cies and the Pakistani authorities and pray against epidemics, particularlyamongst children. Give thanks for the support that has enabled Tearfund tobring life-sustaining aid and hope to thousands of people. Pray for efforts to helpthe millions of Pakistanis who have been made homeless and that they will haveaccess to shelter soon.

Ask the Lord to grant wisdom to those responding to the disaster and that more

governments will be moved by a spirit of generosity in their responses.

    Haiti

More than 6 months on, your support and prayers have enabled Tearfund toachieve a great deal in the devastation that is Haiti. Education is a key compo-nent of Tearfunds response and they have helped 75 schools to reopen and areworking with them to deliver health and hygiene education and to provide la-trines. More than 8,000 children have received training from Tearfund. In addi-

tion, preparations are underway for the building of 3 transitional schools, whichwill also be used as disaster centres/shelters during hurricanes. Help to individu-als and families to enable them to start earning a livelihood is also a key area ofwork and many of you may have seen a lady called Iselene featured on the TVnews. This is her story.

Iselene lost both hands and an arm in the quake and was running out of hopeuntil she met Francois Frandy, a worker for Tearfund Partner in Haiti, WorldConcern. He came up to talk to me and asked for my name. I didnt want to talkto him so I yelled at him and told him to go away. He was so polite though, Iended up talking to him and Im glad I did. Francois gave Iselene a health kitcontaining soap and toothbrushes and toothpaste and other essential items anda cash grant of 100 Haitian dollars, (approx 12 USD) which she sent to her chil-dren. Later he gave her another grant of 600 Haitian dollars (around $USD70),enough for her to start up her business. I bought dried goods like spaghetti, porridge, nuts and biscuits, sweets, oil, wine and lots of tins to sell outside mytent.

The business has given Iselene the opportunity to earn money for her and herfamily and restored her hope and dignity. She is very grateful, Id like to saythank you for everything you have done for me. Please pray for me and my chil-dren. Id like us all to live together again.

For Iselene, and for the millions of people like her, Tearfund is in Haiti for thelong-term. Its operational teams are committed to supporting Haitis recovery initially over a three year programme through local partner organisations andchurches.

Haiti was one of the worlds biggest disasters, and Tearfunds partners are

working in the most challenging conditions. On top of this there is now the dis-aster in Pakistan. Please pray for Gods guidance, strength and grace for allthose in Tearfund and its partners who have to take decisions about priorities, use of resources etc. Pray for God to bless relationships with other aid organi-zations, with the UN and other government agencies and pray that all the Tear-fund, its staff and partners do will be of real help and will let the love of Jesusshine out to those who have lost everything.

`Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lordhis God the Lord who remains faithful for ever. Psalm 146:5

    With thanks for your prayers.

    Back to Church Sunday

    26 September 2010

    10.45 amCOME AS YOU ARE

Do you know someone who attended our church, or another, in

the past but now rarely goes? Are you praying for a member of

your family or a friend who is not yet a Christian? Would you

like an opportunity to invite them to come to Rushmere with

you? If so, Back to Church Sunday will provide one suchopportunity! All over this country, churches are taking part, just as

they have in a number of years recently. Many people have returned

to church or attended for the very first time because of this special

    initiative.

A series of small postcards will be available. You will receive the

first card at the end of August. It is a simple prompt to remind you to

pray for the friend or relative you are thinking of inviting.

The second card will be available early in September and will be the

invitation card which you can hand to the person so that he or she

knows the date, time and venue for the service.

The final card (a picture called A New Day by Nigel Done) will be

given to everybody who attends the morning service on 26September. For the visitors, this will serve as a reminder of their

visit to church and may make them think about the message they

have heard or about returning to the church another day. For regular

members of the congregation, perhaps it can be a reminder to

continue praying for our friends and families throughout the coming

months and to pray for all those who came to church on Back to

    Church Sunday 2010.

    In Deed and Truth

Mission Aviation Fellowships work varies from day to day. In Deedand Truth Ministries is one of the organisations we are able topartner with in southern Sudan.

Working in Tonj, In Deed and Truth Ministries has a primaryhealthcare centre providing medical care for this region. They alsorun discipleship training for Sudanese pastors. Here they shareabout some of their recent connections with MAF.

    Medical Project

Our new medical clinic project stood untouched for six monthsdue to our work crews refusal to return to Sudan during pre-election build-up. Our greatest concern was the state and safety ofthe structure as the steel trusses were held weakly by weldingwaiting for the cross-bars to be attached. With the rainy seasonstarting we were faced with high winds which already broughtthree trusses crashing to the ground. Unsure where to turn to forhelp, we turned to the One who has all the answers and wants tocarry our burden, Jesus Christ. He faithfully connected us throughMAF Sudan with two German volunteers. Andy and Jonathancame and immediately began securing the trusses and giving in-struction to our labourers. By Gods grace and favour we wereable to lift these heavy steel trusses 40ft and reposition and weld

them in place. They have now been secured with the crossbarsand we can start the next phase of our clinic building.

    Medical flight

Issa was travelling from Rumbek to Tonj. Just 25 miles from ourcompound, the truck he was driving was ambushed by bandits. Abullet hit him and shattered his ankle. As the truck stopped, theguards he was travelling with kept firing as they, the passengersand the bandits ran into the bush. Issa found himself alone butmanaged to get out of the truck. Eventually another truck camealong and carried him to Tonj, where he was brought to our clinicfor treatment. Issa is a Ugandan and was transporting goods forSamaritans Purse.

We communicated with Samaritans Purse staff in Juba and areworking with the police to retrieve the truck and hopefully the peo-

ple and supplies. This morning, after a difficult week in the clinic, the Lord gra-ciously reminded me of the reasons we are here and the benefitthe clinic is to the community, especially as we are the only 24-hour medical facility. There literally is nowhere else for people likeIssa to go.

Issa is stable but the severity of the injury required surgery at an

adequate hospital. The Lord quickly answered our prayers. MAF diverted a flight, picked up Issa and flew him to Juba. There he was met by Samari-tans Purse staff who arranged a flight for him to Uganda. Issa wasparticularly concerned about losing his foot but we were able toreassure him.

Continue to pray for the people of Sudan and for peace to reign in

    this nation.

Extracts from a recent letter about

The Good News Stand at the Suffolk Show

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Good News Stand

Thank you for your prayers and donations to this years Stand. We had a good

Show with a larger team and busier tent than for several years. We also gave

out 1300 of our 1500 Some Suffolk Shores leaflets and over 200 DeoGloria World Cup Football booklets to young people trying to knock thedrums off the block by some impressive kicking.

The weather was comfortably warm and dry and there was a good feel to the

Stand and to the Show in general. Our new workers enjoyed their time on the

Stand. We can never know, this side of Glory, the full impact of our contactsand conversations.

We have needed to make some leadership changes to take the Good News

Stand forward into the next decade. We are grateful to God that we now have

a new Chairman and there will still be a Christian witness on the site which has

been hallowed by our prayers for the past fifty years.

The format of the Stand may be a bit different and regular visitors might find afew new faces and not quite all of the old ones there, but it will still be

thoroughly evangelistic and will continue to be known to the Suffolk

Agricultural Association as The Good News Stand. The next Suffolk Show

is a long way off and some decisions still need to be made. The Committee

members, new and continuing, will appreciate your ongoing prayers and

support as they all get to know each other better and make plans for next years

    Stand.

Having reluctantly resigned ourselves at one stage to the possibility that the

Stand might have finally come to the end of the road, we are delighted to be

asking you to support an enthusiastic new team fully in your prayers and

    tithing in future.

    With best wishes

    Jennifer Sheehan (retiring Chair)

    Charles Riddleston (incoming Chair)

    The Key

    15 St Margarets Plain, Ipswich,presents

    AN EVENING WITH

    NIGEL BENN

    Friday 24 September 2010

    at 7.30 pm

Nicknamed The Dark Destroyer, Nigel Benn won the WBO

Middleweight Boxing title in 1990, beating American Doug De Witt

in his own country. His early life was hardened by a four-year career

in the first Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, completing

two tours of Northern Ireland during the height of the troubles. His

fight with Chris Eubank was watched by 42000 people at Old

Trafford, with 18.5 million watching on TV. Although verysuccessful, he had also submitted to many dark forces. It was his

wife Carolynne who first turned to the Church and eventually both of

their lives were turned around. Nigel and Carolynne visit The Key

from their home in Majorca to share their full story. Dont miss it!

This event offers a great opportunity for Christians to invite their

non-Christian friends and family to hear a well-known celebrity whohas found true faith in Jesus Christ. In particular, it is an ideal event

for men. Depending on numbers, the evening may well be moved

    into Bethesda Baptist Church.
