PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

HIGHLIGHTS FROM HADASSAH’S 98th CONVENTION

The Power of Our Dreams

What is a Hadassah Convention? A time to be reenergized and inspired; a place to renew old friendships and make new ones; an opportunity to learn about new medical developments at Hadassah Medical Organi-zation and to be moved to tears by the miraculous healing that continues to take place not only at our own Hadassah Hospital but also at our Youth Aliyah Villages.

Here are just a few highlights.

Malcolm Hoenlein, the executive vice president/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major Amer-ican Jewish Organizations, recipient of the Henrietta Szold Award, presented a very forceful speech in sup-port of Israel and outlined some of the problems it faces.

Watching past National President, Bonnie Lipton (and Purdue U. grad) waltz through the various stations of the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower to a variation of the “My Fair Lady” tune, “On the Street Where You GIVE!”

Dr. Abed Khalaileh’s descr iption of treating Richard Lakin, his frustration with not succeeding and his unusual decision to pay a Shiva call to the Lakin family.

Watching Liana Alvarez, who had been run over by a bus rolling backward down a hill in Jerusalem, run down the aisle in high heels to greet us and tell the story of her miraculous recovery.

Break-out sessions:

I have always taken pleasure in learning, so the text study about strong women in the Bible was delightful and mostly undertaken for my personal pleasure.

Panel on Curriculum Watch with Prof. Sandra Alfonsi made my blood boil! One of the women leaving the earlier session said, “I have found my new passion in life!” Prof. Alfonsi traced the path of Saudi Arabian money which started in some California Universities, made its way into many PhD theses and from there into our elementary and high school textbooks. Her team has developed a form that you can use to submit concerns about specific textbooks.

I also tried to improve my computer skills by attending a hands-on workshop on using Facebook. For me this was an introduction and I will need more practice, but I can see how this can be a useful tool to inform young and prospective members about Hadassah’s programs.

Another session I attended was on “Jewish Perspectives on End of Life Care.” This was very informative and is one I would like to replicate for our chapter.

We were reminded many times that Henrietta Szold founded Hadassah BEFORE women could vote! And BEFORE the State of Israel was established. She was quoted frequently that, “We should dream and when we do, we should dream BIG!” which led to strong women with “the power of women who DO!” And in closing, our National president, Ellen Hershkin, did take note of the fact that for the first time a woman has been nominated as candidate for President of the United States.

I thank you for sending me as your representative to this exciting, informative and inspiring convention.

The moving finger writes, and The moving finger writes, and The moving finger writes, and The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on ………having writ, moves on ………having writ, moves on ………having writ, moves on ………

The year is almost over. “How did that happen?,” we ask ourselves, as we have done for so many years.

Some things remain pretty much unchanged. That can’t be said for Hadassah. We are a group of dynamic, full-of-life, in-the-moment while also focused-on-the-future women. Thus our tag: Women who DO!

Re-thinking and re-working the Five W’s (Who-

What-When-Where-Why) is what the hard-

working and hard-driving National Board and their staff do all the time. That’s probably something that we all do in one way or another.

All of this has to do with membership.

Who? Women who became “Gifted” Annual Members. That is, one of our Life members gave the gift of an Annual Member- ship to you during the last half of 2015.

What & When? Your Hadassah member-ship is up for renewal. You will receive infor-mation in the mail about this. Gifted members now have the opportunity to renew as an Annual Member for $36/year or as a Life member for $180. That $180 is just for our Gifted Members for this year only.

Where and Why? Well, here! And, because your presence enriches us all. As corny as that sounds, it’s true. Not that we haven’t loved each other for many years, but new members add so much to the mix. New thoughts and ideas. A fresh spin on what and how to develop programs and events is so welcome.

For most of you, your new membership is up for renewal in a month or two. Stay with us. Annual or Life member …… your choice. Be an honoree at the Annual Membership Luncheon in November!

Questions? Contact Marilyn Stark, Member-bership VP at 941-925-1852, or [email protected]

. . . . . . . .

Becoming a Life Member

Becoming a Hadassah Life member is fairly straight forward. You pay dues once and that’s that. The Life member offer for Gifted members is explained in the first column on this page. If you have been an member who pays her dues annually, you may, as always, become a Life member.

Until December 31, 2016, a Life membership is $212. As of January 1, 2017, it will in-crease to $250. Also, you may want to con-sider gifting a friend, sister, daughter, grand-daughter with a Life membership. Hanukkah is just around the corner …… sort of.

There is another kind of Life member - an eMEMBER (See ad above.) Becoming an eMEMBER may be precisely what a women needs to keep her in touch and to find her Jewish connection. The cost? $100 tax deductible enrollment fee for life. This does not prevent her from becoming a chapter member when she is able. However, the $100 only covers an eMembership.

WANTED!WANTED!WANTED!WANTED!

SaBra Chapter needs a historian, an archivist, a keeper of

all things SaBra.

I have a box of albums that go back to …… and probably be-

fore ….. the start of this chapter. The woman who maintained

these records did a great job for many years, but she was no

longer able to continue and, sadly, she passed away a few

years ago.

There are more issues of Kol Bat Ami as well as certificates &

other documents worthwhile saving.

What you see here is the front page, Volume 1, Number 1

October 1991 ….the first issue of Kol Bat Ami. The certificate

shown states that the Longboat Key Sabra Chapter of Hadas-

sah is hereby recognized as a constituent of Hadassah, The

Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. The list of Founding Members is at the left of the

certificate. We’ll have an enlarged copy at the September 22 meeting.

Contact Lee at 941-924-1338 or [email protected] if you would like to be involved in

this very worthwhile position.

The Meet & Mingle Luncheon Meet & Mingle Luncheon Meet & Mingle Luncheon Meet & Mingle Luncheon at the Apollonia Mediterranean Grill in mid July was enjoyed
