Chaplin’s full bal- letic and comedic powers are brought to bear on showing the lengths that he goes to to maintain the illusion and keep the attention of the girl. A wonderful treat in any condition but we are ecstatic to be able to present this new print! Also Screening Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3 The Great Dictator at 1:00, 9:30 (1940) dir Charlie Chaplin w/Chaplin, Paulette Godard, Jack Oakie [124 min] Chaplin’s first synch-sound film was, and remains, his most controversial. It was the first time he had ever written a script in advance, and he shot on a closed set. Chaplin stars in a dual role as a Jewish barber and the dictator Adenoid Hynkel who he is mistaken for. After the reality of Germany under Hitler had been fully exposed, Chaplin wished that he had never made THE GREAT DICTATOR. Yet, almost 70 years later, the film represents a unique attempt to laugh in the face of horror, to remain on the side of civilization when barbarity reigned. – adapted from notes for Film Society of Lincoln Center Friday, September 7 & Saturday, September 8 Fritz Lang’s Metropolis Fri at 4:30; Sat at 2:00, 4:30, 7:00 (1927) dir Fritz Lang w/Alfred Abel, Gustav Frölich, Brigitte Helm, Rudolf Klein-Rogge [124 min] Certainly one of Kino’s greatest achievements of the past 10 years has been bring- ing this fantastic resurrection of one of cinema’s masterpieces to the U.S. Amid the gleaming towers of a gigantic city of the future the pampered son of the big boss himself is smitten by a young woman and follows her into the depths of the city – where he discovers what really makes Metropolis run. As slavishly regi- mented workers with numbers instead of names toil amid smoke-belching machinery, he has a vision of slaves lining up for sacrifice. Meanwhile, his father anticipates unrest and makes plans to defuse it, inciting an eccentric inventor to fashion an agent provocateur, the ‘robot-Maria” – one of the most indelible icons of science fiction film. Inspired (or so the legend says) by his first glimpse of the New York skyline, Fritz Lang’s visionary work, with its thousands of extras, monstrous sets and cutting- edge camera trickery, was a legend almost from release. Mercilessly edited in every subsequent version, METROPOLIS was seen as Lang conceived it only by the earliest Berlin audiences. Until 2001, when an astonishing 1257 scenes were digitally restored. The result is probably the most complete version of Lang’s work that will ever be seen. Sunday, September 9 & Monday, September 10 Wong Kar Wai’s Fallen Angels at 5:30, 7:30 (+ Sun at 1:30, 3:30) (1995) dir Wong Kar-Wai w/Leon Lai, Michelle Reis, Takeshi Kaneshiro [90 min] One of Wong Kar-Wai’s most purely enjoyable films, FALLEN ANGELS follows Leon Lai as a cool-as-ice hit man who receives his faxed assignments from his agent, Michelle Reis. When the agent isn’t planning the killer’s next hit she's cleaning his apartment or rolling around fantasizing about him even though the two never meet. The genre aspects take a back seat to Chris Doyle’s fantastic camera work and the amusing subplot surrounding Takeshi Kaneshiro as a mute who breaks into closed lunch stands and forces passersby to be his patrons. Tuesday, September 11 & Wednesday, September 12 Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors at 3:30, 8:00 (1964) dir Sergie Parajanov w/Ivan Mikolajchuk, Larisa Kadochnikova, Tatyana Bestayeva [97 min] Paradjanov’s gloriously colorful and kinesthetically bracing saga of Ivan and Marichka, the Romeo and Juliet of the Carpathians. In retribution, he is transferred to a backwater town with the lowest crime rate in the country. However, when the dead begin to rise from their graves and zombies threaten to take over London, Shaun finds himself in his element and, with Ed at his side, sets off on a quest to rescue his girl and his beloved mum. Tuesday, October 2 NIGHT WATCH at 2:45, 7:30 (2004) dir Timur Bekmambetov w/Konstantin Khabensky, Mariya Proshina [114 min] DAY WATCH at 5:00, 9:45 (2006) dir Timur Bekmambetov w/Konstantin Khabensky, Mariya Proshina [132 min] This pair of Russian fantasy films uses over-the-top special effects and frenetic action scenes to tell the tale of the unseen magical cold-war that goes on under the unsuspecting noses of the residents of modern-day Moscow. An uneasy truce has existed for centuries between the forces of good and evil. The Night Watch is a sort of ad-hoc police force that keeps its eye on the evildoers (vampires, witches and other nasties) while the Day Watch makes sure that the good guys don’t tip the balance of power too far in their favor. When a once-in-a-lifetime chosen one appears on both sides of the conflict, the action comes to a head in a conflict that threatens to destroy the balance and throw the entire world into chaos. Wednesday, October 3 28 DAYS LATER at 3:00, 7:30 (2002) dir Danny Boyle w/Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson [113 min] This visceral and brutal thriller helped usher in a new wave of exciting horror films from Britain. A bike messenger named Jim (Murphy) wakes up in a London hospital and finds that a plague has rendered the city a wasteland. The only inhabitants left are a smattering of survivors and the hordes of vicious and infect- ed victims of the mysterious virus. Shot on video for added realism, the film’s first half is a terrifying new spin on the zombie genre, and when Jim and his friends finally make their way to a military outpost, 28 DAYS LATER becomes an arch commentary on the idea that hell is, in fact, other people. The sight of Murphy walking through an utterly deserted London remains one of the most memorable scenes from the last decade. 28 WEEKS LATER at 5:30, 9:50 (2007) dir Juan Carlos Fresnadillo w/Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne [99 min] Seven months after the plague devastated the country, London has become a for- tified city and refugees begin their repatriation ushered in by the US army. A sur- vivor (Carlyle) is reunited with his two children in this fortified “green zone,” but he carries a terrible secret and naturally, it will set off a disastrous chain of events. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (Intacto) stays true to the spirit of the original by sticking to handheld cameras to document the infected’s rampages. Like its pre- decessor, 28 WEEKS LATER beautifully illustrates that the monsters in our worst nightmares are no match for the casual destruction brought on by human foibles. Friday, October 5 – Wednesday, October 10 Repertory Series! COMEDY ON THE ROAD For some reason, the beginning of fall always puts us in the mind of road trips, and so, in celebration of the season, we offer this selection of classic comedic road movies. All made during or just after the period when the highway began to rule the American consciousness (with one notably silent exception), our COMEDY ON THE ROAD films cover ground from Maine to Albuquerque – with a side trip to Oz. From the dustbowl travels of Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT to the madcap treasure hunters of IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD to, yes, Dorothy’s trip over the rainbow, we’re certain that everyone will find something to love in this true cavalcade of comedy. Thursday, October 11 – Monday, October 15 The Fifth Annual BOSTON FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL It’s hard to believe that five years have passed since the inception of the Brattle’s genre film festival. Those five years have seen the rise and fall of the J-Horror craze, a surge in American ‘torture horror,’ a renewed interest in Hong Kong films, and the rise of Korea as a genre film-lovers paradise. We’re pleased that BOSTON FANTASTIC has been on the cutting-edge of these movements (as evidenced by our alumni) and we hope to remain on the edge for years to come. Previous highlights have included the Boston premieres of The Host, Saw, Tideland, Infernal Affairs, Ju-On 1 & 2, Darkon, Creep, Appleseed, A Tale of Two Sisters, Severance, Mamoru Oshii's Avalon, Robot Stories, and Undead, as well as special archival screenings and more! Tuesday, October 16 – Thursday, October 25 Repertory Series! SEVENTIES SHOOTER: A TRIBUTE TO LASZLO KOVACS American cinema lost one of the definitive cinematographers of the second half of the 20th century this year. Laszlo Kovacs passed away in July after over 50 years of being on the cinematic cutting-edge. Kovacs arrived in America from his native Hungary around 1956 after escaping the repressive Communist regime with 30,000 feet of illicitly shot film and his friend, and fellow camera man, Vilmos Zsigmond. After working in various odd jobs on the East Coast, Kovacs undertook a cross-country bus trip from New Jersey to Seattle that famously inspired the natural landscapes and lighting used in EASY RIDER. After working dozens of B- grade films (frequently for Roger Corman), Kovacs teamed up with Dennis Hopper for that legendary road/head trip and forged his place in cinema history. His sub- sequent films include major collaborations with Peter Bogdanovich, Bob Rafelson, Robert Altman, Martin Scorses, and others – only a handful of which are repre- sented here. After the new wave of American cinema faded at the end of the 70s, Kovacs continued to work and left his mark on some of the definitive films of the 80s as well, including Ghostbusters and Say Anything, but it was his place in the vanguard of American independent cinema that truly makes him a cinema icon. Though the musi- cians face each other, the audience is drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards from the all-star cast of characters seated around the table. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub into a regional institution and we couldn’t be more pleased that they’ve selected the Brattle as the site for their first ever theater gig. Satoshi Kon's films are smart and challenging and PAPRIKA's artistry and unexpectedly sweet emotional payoff make it one of the most delightful films of 2007. Saturday, September 22 GRINDHOUSE at 1:00, 4:30, 8:00 (2007) dirs Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino w/Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodriguez, Marley Shelton, Naveen Andrews, Josh Brolin, Jeff Fahey, Michael Parks, Kurt Russell, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd, Tracie Thoms, Rosario Dawson, Zoë Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead [191 min] When GRINDHOUSE failed to meet box office expectations upon its release this spring, it was dismissed as an overlong snooze from two self-indulgent filmmakers. It also happens to be one of our favorite films of the year. Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s big-budget homage to exploitation cinema is a gross, sleazy, smart and hilarious tribute to going to the movies for the sheer fun of it. Rodriguez’s PLANET TERROR casts Rose MacGowan as a plucky go-go dancer who must save the world from a zombie apocalypse. In DEATH PROOF, Tarantino gives Kurt Russell his best role in years as a psycho bent on offing a band of girlfriends with his souped-up Dodge Charger. Both feature-length movies (Tarantino’s in particular) have a smart and fresh take on the genre, and there’s even trailers for phoney upcoming films like Eli Roth’s holiday slasher Thanksgiving (“White meat! Dark meat! All will be carved!”) and Rob Zombie’s Werewolf Women Of The S.S. Explosively entertaining. Sunday, September 23 MY BEST FRIEND at 3:30, 7:30 (2006) dir Patrice Leconte w/Daniel Auteuil, Dany Boon, Julie Gayet [94 min] François (Auteuil) is a successful antique dealer who is shocked to find that those who he considers his close friends don’t actually like him. In fact, they don’t believe that he even knows the mean- ing of friendship. François’ business partner, Catherine, wagers that he can’t produce his best friend and challenges him to intro- duce them. Determined to win the bet, François enlists a friendly cabbie, Bruno, to pose as his friend and help him learn how to be a likeable person. This witty, erudite comedy is a wonderful film from one of France’s leading filmmakers and one of its most beloved stars. THE BOSS OF IT ALL at 5:30, 9:30 (2006) dir Lars Von Trier w/Jens Albinus, Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, Peter Gantzler, Benedikt Erlingsson, Iben Hjejle [99 min] An entirely unexpected office comedy from Danish director Lars von Trier, THE BOSS OF IT ALL marks von Trier's first Danish film since 1998's The Idiots. Ravn (Gantzler), the owner of an I.T. com- pany, attributes all of his company's executive decisions to a fic- tional “Boss Of It All.” Conveniently the fictional boss lives in the United States and communicates solely via e-mail. However, when a potential buyer demands to meet the company's boss he must hire Kristoffer (Albinus), an out-of-work actor to masquerade as the loathed CEO. What follows is a hilarious comedy of errors as Kristoffer is confronted with the chaos and confusion of meeting the company's staff; all of whom have been given contrasting information about their fabled boss. Monday, September 24 BUG at 7:30 (2007) dir William Friedkin w/Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon, Harry Connick Jr. [102 min] Legendary 70s director William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Excorcist) returns with this taught, claustrophobic thriller adapted from the play by Tracy Letts. Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon (who originated the role on stage) give fearless perfor- mances as a damaged waitress and a paranoid Gulf War veteran holed up in an Oklahoma motel room who imagine themselves under siege by a swarm of bugs. JOSHUA at 5:15, 9:45 (2007) dir George Ratliff w/Sam Rockwell, Vera Farmiga, Jacob Kogan [105 min] George Ratliff’s (Hell House) narrative feature debut suffered from a truncated run in Boston this summer, but this thriller is not just another creepy-little-kid movie, and deserves a second look. Joshua (Kogan) is an exceptionally gifted, albeit taciturn and morbid 9-year old who lives in an immaculate Manhattan apart- ment with his parents. Joshua’s mother (Farmiga) slides into an increasingly bleak and violent despair when Joshua’s newborn sister goes on an interminable crying jag. Is Farmiga suffering from a seriously bad case of post-partum depression – or does it have more to do with her offbeat son’s increasingly unusual behavior? Ratliff does a superb job establishing a menacing, off- kilter tone as the family implodes, and Farmiga delivers a fearless performance as a young mother in the throes of a total nervous breakdown, making JOSHUA an effective and disquieting exami- nation of the fears of parenthood. Tuesday, September 25 12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (2006) dir Corneliu Porumboiu w/Mircea Andreescu, Teodor Corban, Ion Sapdaru [89 min] This wry, funny farce took the award for best first film at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. On the eve of the 16th anniversary of the Romanian Revolution, a pretentious, small-town TV host strains to produce a show to commemorate the event but the only people he can find to interview are an alcoholic history teacher and a lonely retiree, who moonlights as Santa. As these two struggle to defend their self-professed positions as vanguards of the revolution, the TV producer sees his show disintegrating before his eyes. Wednesday, September 26 LADY CHATTERLEY at 5:15, 8:30 (2006) dir Pascale Ferran w/Marina Hands, Jean-Louis Coullo'ch, Hippolyte Giradot [168 min] A keenly perceptive, frankly sensual adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's classic novel about the turbulent love affair between an aristocrat- ic woman and her husband’s gamekeeper. It’s 1921 and Constance Chatterley, a young bride frustrated by her marriage to a wheelchair-bound veteran, has moved to one of her husband’s rural estates. Lonely and isolated in a rural environment that bores her, Lady Chatterley nonetheless finds her desire awakened by her taciturn gamekeeper Oliver Parkin. LADY CHATTERLEY tells the story of a passion that is both innocent and subversive – one that transcends, without ever ignoring, class and social conventions. As Constance and Parkin nourish their mutual love, both enter into a radical realm where nature, sex and romance merge into one powerful experience. Joined by the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man, Dorothy travels down the Yellow Brick Road in search of a way home in this Technicolor dream of a film. Sunday, October 7 It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World at 2:00, 5:00, 8:00 (1963) dir Stanley Kramer w/Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Terry-Thomas, Jonathan Winters [161 min] Quite simply one of the most madcap of madcap comedies, MAD WORLD pits teams of comedic geniuses against each other in a search for hidden treasure… and the biggest laughs. When a group of drivers stop to help an accident victim, they are incited into a riotous, cross-state race to find the $350,000 in stolen cash that he describes to them. Caustic wit and slapstick comedy careen headlong into each other and this cavalcade of comedy stars. Monday, October 8 It Happened One Night at 3:15, 7:15 (1934) dir Frank Capra w/Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert [105 min] A harbinger of the contemporary romantic comedy, IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is as hilarious now as it was when it won Best Picture in 1934. A spoiled, sheltered heiress (Colbert) flees her controlling father and hits the road. It isn't long before she needs the help of a down-on-his luck reporter played by the roguishly charming Clark Gable. They immediately drive each other completely crazy, trad- ing barbs with a comedic chemistry that is rarely replicated. In fact, Colbert and Gable find each other so infuriating that they can't help but fall madly in love. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is a romantic, hilarious, Hollywood classic that is not to be missed. Love On The Run at 5:30, 9:30 (1936) dir W.S. Van Dyke w/Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Franchot Tone [80 min] When IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT struck it rich at the box office, Hollywood churned out a number of imitators to capitalize on it, and LOVE ON THE RUN is one of the best. Gable is recast as a reporter chasing an escaping heiress, but this time, instead of Colbert, we get Joan Crawford. Crawford is fleeing her wedding and Gable is more than happy to assist but the pair wind up being chased by spies… and another reporter. Tuesday, October 9 Palm Beach Story at 7:15 (1942) dir Preston Sturges w/Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea, Mary Astor, Rudy Vallee [88 min] Preston Sturges was a comedic genius and this railway road movie is one of his best films. Nutty wife Colbert up and leaves her inventor husband and heads to Palm Beach by train to get a divorce with jilted hubby hot on her trail. Mistaken identity, a loopy millionaire, the meddling of the boisterous ‘Ale and Quail Club’ and an inexplicable pair of twins follow as well. The General at 5:30, 9:15 (1927) dirs Clyde Bruckman, Buster Keaton w/Buster Keaton, Marion Mack [75 min] Silent comedy legend Buster Keaton plays a love-sick train con- ductor during the Civil War. When his train is hijacked with his lady-love onboard Keaton must subvert the spies, rescue his love and retrieve his train! The film soon erupts into a high-speed loco- motive chase as Keaton and his love rush to warn the confederate army about a union plot. Keaton, a skilled physical comedian, per- forms his own stunts and jumps along the top of the train without missing a beat. A masterpiece of silent comedy THE GENERAL is the great stone face at his delightful best. Wednesday, October 10 The Long Long Trailer at 8:00, 10:00 (1954) dir Vincente Minnelli w/Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz [103 min] Ah, the Fifties, a time when a suburban starter home became the aspiration of millions… but what if you could get that suburban home on wheels!?! At least that’s the dream of one half of the newlyweds at the center of this classic comedy. And, when Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz play the married couple, we’ll give you one guess which half wants the mobile home. Outrageous comedic set-pieces follow as the couple tries to simultaneously live the opposing dreams of the Fifties: the call of the open road and the bliss of domestic partnership. SEVENTIES SHOOTER: A TRIBUTE TO LASZLO KOVACS Tuesday, October 16 & Wednesday, October 17 Five Easy Pieces at 7:30 (1970) dir Bob Rafelson w/Jack Nicholson, Karen Black, Billy Green Bush, Susan Anspach, Lois Smith [96 min] Nicholson’s tour-de-force performance as a talented pianist who doesn’t want to be tied down includes one of his most infamous scenes, when he tries to get plain toast in a diner by ordering a chicken salad sandwich and asking the waitress to hold the chick- en… between her knees. Classic Nicholson and a classic 70s road movie. The King Of Marvin Gardens Tue at 5:15, 9:30; Wed at 5:15 only (1972) dir Bob Rafelson w/Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, Ellen Burstyn, Julia Anne Robinson, Scatman Crothers; Cinematography by Laszlo Kovacs [103 min] Another of Bob Rafelson’s terrific tales of free-spirits pitted against a society that refuses to understand them. The underrated Bruce Dern stars as David, a wheeler-dealer who has fallen on hard times while living on the Boardwalk at Atlantic City. He convinces his brother Jason (Nicholson), a radio talk show host, to buy into a scheme to build a resort on a Pacific island but the machinations of interpersonal relationships and David’s over- confidence doom it almost from the beginning. The startling and unexpected conclusion is worth the price of admission alone. Sunday, October 21 Paper Moon at 3:00, 7:15 (1973) dir Peter Bogdanovich w/Ryan O'Neal, Tatum O'Neal, Madeline Kahn, John Hillerman; Cinematography by Laszlo Kovacs [102 min] Mose, A Depression era ‘Bible sales- man’ finds himself the ward of Addie, a recently orphaned little girl who becomes a willing participant in his increasingly illegal cons. Peter Bogdanovich’s love of classic cinema is evident in every frame of this gor- geous, poignant black-and-white comedy and Ryan O’Neal and real-life daughter Tatum turn in wonderfully charming performances as the oddball team of swindlers. The third of Bogdanovich’s many collaborations with Kovacs, this remains a highpoint for both. What s Up Doc? at 5:15, 9:30 (1972) dir Peter Bogdanovich w/Ryan O'Neal, Barbara Streisand, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendleton, Michael Murphy; Cinematography by Laszlo Kovacs [94 min] Peter Bogdanovich's hit screwball comedy pairs a free-spirited Barbara Streisand with an uptight, bespeckled Ryan O'Neal. A tense musicologist (O'Neal) travels to San Francisco in order to compete for a research grant. Unfortunately he has packed the same plaid suitcase as three other people and chaos immediately ensues as his igneous rocks are confused with government docu- ments and jewels. In the tradition of Howard Hawk's Bringing Up Baby, Streisand is desperately smitten with O'Neal only to bring utterly hilarious havoc to his life. Not to be missed by any fans of screwball comedies. Monday, October 22 Freebie and the Bean at 5:00, 7:30, 10:00 (1974) dir Richard Rush w/Alan Arkin, James Caan, Loretta Swit, Jack Kruschen; Cinematography by Laszlo Kovacs [113 min] We’ll warn you, this movie is ruthlessly un-PC. It’s filled with bigot- ed, macho dialogue between its tough-as-nails cop protagonists… It is also extremely funny and a great entry into the annals of slap- stick action – a peculiarly 70s genre. James Caan and Alan Arkin are Freebie and Bean, two San Francisco cops hot on the trail of the crime boss, “Red” Meyers and they will let no car remain uncrashed in their single-minded pursuit. Caan handles the comedic repartee with ease and Arkin is surprisingly good in a role that lets him be aggressive for once. Tuesday, October 23 Shampoo at 5:15, 7:30, 9:45 (1975) dir Hal Ashby w/Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Lee Grant, Goldie Hawn [109 min] As with many films of the period, SHAMPOO is a remarkable con- fluence of talent not only with the great Kovacs on camera but helmed by Hal Ashby (Harold & Maude) and written by Robert Towne (Chinatown), not to mention Beatty in his legendary, hilari- ous performance as a frantic hairdresser/Cassanova juggling girl- friends and clients (and girlfriends’ husbands). Few other 70s films simultaneously capture the poignant death of 60s idealisim, the joy of excess and the anxiety and ennui that accompany both as well as SHAMPOO. Wednesday, October 24 Easy Rider at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (1969) dir Dennis Hopper w/Hopper, Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson [94 Min] Legendary cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs is largely credited (alongside friend and collaborator Vilmos Zsigmond) as having created the ‘look’ of 70s film and nowhere is this more apparent than in the muted colors and sunset landscapes of EASY RIDER. Though this psychedelic motorcycle movie about two countercul- ture outsiders driving cross-country “looking for America” spawned countless imitators, nothing can compare to the image of lawyer George (Nicholson) riding on a motorcycle behind Captain America (Fonda) while wearing a football helmet. EASY RIDER, won Hopper ‘Best New Director’ at Cannes and ushered in a new era in Hollywood cinema. Thursday, October 25 Close Encounters Of The Third Kind at 8:00pm (1977) dir Steven Spielberg w/Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Francois Truffaut; Additional photography by Laszlo Kovacs [132 min] It is telling that Kovacs, who helped to create independent-minded studio films at the dawn of the 70s, was also involved in this film that helped to destroy it. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS is a great film, there’s no denying, but its blockbuster status (paired with the suc- cess of Jaws) renewed the studio heads faith in big budget specta- cles at the expense of the more intimate character driven films that had been the lifeblood of prior 70s filmmaking. Kovacs partnered with his friend Vilmos Zsigmond on the photography for Spielberg’s fascinating, beautiful film about the appearance of aliens in our midst – not for invasion but for inter-species learning and betterment. Certainly one of Kino’s greatest achievements of the past 10 years has been bring-ing this fantastic resurrection of one of cinema’s masterpieces to the U.S. Amidthe gleaming towers of a gigantic city of the future the pampered son of the bigboss himself is smitten by a young woman and follows her into the depths of thecity – where he discovers what really makes Metropolis run. As slavishly regi-mented workers with numbers instead of names toil amid smoke-belchingmachinery, he has a vision of slaves lining up for sacrifice. Meanwhile, his fatheranticipates unrest and makes plans to defuse it, inciting an eccentric inventor tofashion an agent provocateur, the ‘robot-Maria” – one of the most indelible iconsof science fiction film.

Inspired (or so the legend says) by his first glimpse of the New York skyline, FritzLang’s visionary work, with its thousands of extras, monstrous sets and cutting-edge camera trickery, was a legend almost from release. Mercilessly edited inevery subsequent version, METROPOLIS was seen as Lang conceived it only bythe earliest Berlin audiences. Until 2001, when an astonishing 1257 scenes weredigitally restored. The result is probably the most complete version of Lang’swork that will ever be seen.

When the agent isn’t planning the killer’s next hit she'scleaning his apartment or rolling around fantasizing about him even though thetwo never meet. The genre aspects take a back seat to Chris Doyle’s fantasticcamera work and the amusing subplot surrounding Takeshi Kaneshiro as a mutewho breaks into closed lunch stands and forces passersby to be his patrons.

When a once-in-a-lifetime chosen oneappears on both sides of the conflict, the action comes to a head in a conflict thatthreatens to destroy the balance and throw the entire world into chaos.

A bike messenger named Jim (Murphy) wakes up in a Londonhospital and finds that a plague has rendered the city a wasteland. The onlyinhabitants left are a smattering of survivors and the hordes of vicious and infect-ed victims of the mysterious virus. Shot on video for added realism, the film’s firsthalf is a terrifying new spin on the zombie genre, and when Jim and his friendsfinally make their way to a military outpost, 28 DAYS LATER becomes an archcommentary on the idea that hell is, in fact, other people. The sight of Murphywalking through an utterly deserted London remains one of the most memorablescenes from the last decade.

A sur-vivor (Carlyle) is reunited with his two children in this fortified “green zone,” buthe carries a terrible secret and naturally, it will set off a disastrous chain of events.Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (Intacto) stays true to the spirit of the original bysticking to handheld cameras to document the infected’s rampages. Like its pre-decessor, 28 WEEKS LATER beautifully illustrates that the monsters in our worstnightmares are no match for the casual destruction brought on by human foibles.

Those five years have seen the rise and fall of the J-Horrorcraze, a surge in American ‘torture horror,’ a renewed interest in Hong Kong films,and the rise of Korea as a genre film-lovers paradise. We’re pleased that BOSTONFANTASTIC has been on the cutting-edge of these movements (as evidenced byour alumni) and we hope to remain on the edge for years to come.

SEVENTIES SHOOTER:A TRIBUTE TO LASZLO KOVACSAmerican cinema lost one of the definitive cinematographers of the second half ofthe 20th century this year. Laszlo Kovacs passed away in July after over 50 yearsof being on the cinematic cutting-edge. Kovacs arrived in America from his nativeHungary around 1956 after escaping the repressive Communist regime with30,000 feet of illicitly shot film and his friend, and fellow camera man, VilmosZsigmond. After working in various odd jobs on the East Coast, Kovacs undertooka cross-country bus trip from New Jersey to Seattle that famously inspired thenatural landscapes and lighting used in EASY RIDER. After working dozens of B-grade films (frequently for Roger Corman), Kovacs teamed up with Dennis Hopperfor that legendary road/head trip and forged his place in cinema history. His sub-sequent films include major collaborations with Peter Bogdanovich, Bob Rafelson,Robert Altman, Martin Scorses, and others – only a handful of which are repre-sented here. After the new wave of American cinema faded at the end of the 70s,Kovacs continued to work and left his mark on some of the definitive films of the80s as well, including Ghostbusters and Say Anything, but it was his place in thevanguard of American independent cinema that truly makes him a cinema icon.

In DEATH PROOF, Tarantino gives KurtRussell his best role in years as a psycho bent on offing a band ofgirlfriends with his souped-up Dodge Charger. What follows is a hilarious comedy of errors asKristoffer is confronted with the chaos and confusion of meetingthe company's staff; all of whom have been given contrastinginformation about their fabled boss.

JOSHUAat 5:15, 9:45(2007) dir George Ratliff w/Sam Rockwell, Vera Farmiga, JacobKogan [105 min]George Ratliff’s (Hell House) narrative feature debut suffered froma truncated run in Boston this summer, but this thriller is not justanother creepy-little-kid movie, and deserves a second look.Joshua (Kogan) is an exceptionally gifted, albeit taciturn andmorbid 9-year old who lives in an immaculate Manhattan apart-ment with his parents. Joshua’s mother (Farmiga) slides into anincreasingly bleak and violent despair when Joshua’s newbornsister goes on an interminable crying jag. Is Farmiga sufferingfrom a seriously bad case of post-partum depression – or does ithave more to do with her offbeat son’s increasingly unusualbehavior? Ratliff does a superb job establishing a menacing, off-kilter tone as the family implodes, and Farmiga delivers a fearlessperformance as a young mother in the throes of a total nervousbreakdown, making JOSHUA an effective and disquieting exami-nation of the fears of parenthood.

When his train is hijacked with hislady-love onboard Keaton must subvert the spies, rescue his loveand retrieve his train! The film soon erupts into a high-speed loco-motive chase as Keaton and his love rush to warn the confederatearmy about a union plot. Keaton, a skilled physical comedian, per-forms his own stunts and jumps along the top of the train withoutmissing a beat. Atense musicologist (O'Neal) travels to San Francisco in order tocompete for a research grant. Unfortunately he has packed thesame plaid suitcase as three other people and chaos immediatelyensues as his igneous rocks are confused with government docu-ments and jewels. In the tradition of Howard Hawk's Bringing UpBaby, Streisand is desperately smitten with O'Neal only to bringutterly hilarious havoc to his life. Not to be missed by any fans ofscrewball comedies.

It’s filled with bigot-ed, macho dialogue between its tough-as-nails cop protagonists…It is also extremely funny and a great entry into the annals of slap-stick action – a peculiarly 70s genre. James Caan and Alan Arkinare Freebie and Bean, two San Francisco cops hot on the trail ofthe crime boss, “Red” Meyers and they will let no car remainuncrashed in their single-minded pursuit. Caan handles thecomedic repartee with ease and Arkin is surprisingly good in a rolethat lets him be aggressive for once.

Tuesday, October 23Shampooat 5:15, 7:30, 9:45(1975) dir Hal Ashby w/Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Lee Grant,Goldie Hawn [109 min]As with many films of the period, SHAMPOO is a remarkable con-fluence of talent not only with the great Kovacs on camera buthelmed by Hal Ashby (Harold & Maude) and written by RobertTowne (Chinatown), not to mention Beatty in his legendary, hilari-ous performance as a frantic hairdresser/Cassanova juggling girl-friends and clients (and girlfriends’ husbands). Few other 70s filmssimultaneously capture the poignant death of 60s idealisim, thejoy of excess and the anxiety and ennui that accompany both aswell as SHAMPOO.

Wednesday, October 24Easy Riderat 5:30, 7:30, 9:30(1969) dir Dennis Hopper w/Hopper, Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson[94 Min]Legendary cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs is largely credited(alongside friend and collaborator Vilmos Zsigmond) as havingcreated the ‘look’ of 70s film and nowhere is this more apparentthan in the muted colors and sunset landscapes of EASY RIDER.Though this psychedelic motorcycle movie about two countercul-ture outsiders driving cross-country “looking for America”spawned countless imitators, nothing can compare to the imageof lawyer George (Nicholson) riding on a motorcycle behindCaptain America (Fonda) while wearing a football helmet. EASYRIDER, won Hopper ‘Best New Director’ at Cannes and ushered ina new era in Hollywood cinema.

Thursday, October 25Close Encounters Of TheThird Kindat 8:00pm(1977) dir Steven Spielberg w/Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr,Francois Truffaut; Additional photography by Laszlo Kovacs [132min]It is telling that Kovacs, who helped to create independent-mindedstudio films at the dawn of the 70s, was also involved in this filmthat helped to destroy it. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS is a great film,there’s no denying, but its blockbuster status (paired with the suc-cess of Jaws) renewed the studio heads faith in big budget specta-cles at the expense of the more intimate character driven films thathad been the lifeblood of prior 70s filmmaking. Kovacs partneredwith his friend Vilmos Zsigmond on the photography forSpielberg’s fascinating, beautiful film about the appearance ofaliens in our midst – not for invasion but for inter-species learningand betterment.
