Introducing our New Staff
Mrs. Terryl Stone was born and raised in Manitoba, and now resides in Boissevain. She is a teacher and photographer, and owner of Black Dog Photography. Having lived out in Alberta for many years and taking some time at home with her two young kids, she's excited to be back teaching in Manitoba.
Hello, I am Ms. Samantha Perreault, a new Educational Assistant at Wawanesa School. I moved to Wawanesa a year and a half ago from Brandon. I decided to move for a little change and something new. Last year I volunteered at the PCH and substituted as an EA. I am happy and excited to be a part of the team and community at Wawanesa School.
My name is Ms. Taylor Hintz. I was born and raised in Boissevain. I grew up in a family of iive, with two brothers and one sister. During my school years I enjoyed being involved in extra curricular sports such as hockey, volleyball, baseball and also participated in a half marathon. I recently moved back to Boissevain from Fisher Branch where I worked as an educational assistant and assisted coaching volleyball. My future plans include becoming an elementary school teacher and I look forward to the upcoming year at Wawanesa School.

School Yard Space Many parents and community members have noticed the recent re-‐location of our second trailer at the school. We are very limited in physical space in the school and on the school grounds. The plans for the trailers are to have them become extra teaching space. The trailer east of the school is nearing completion for a small engines classroom. The one north of the school is in the plans for refurbishment upon completion of the small engines trailer and eventually will be used as classroom space.
Mr. B. Hauser
AttendanceJust a reminder to parents
to continue to contact the school between 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. regarding student absences, either by telephone (483-‐6298) or by emai l ([email protected]). This will save us from contacting your home. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
On-‐Line BankingParents are able to pay
school fees using their on-‐line banking option with most iinancial institutions. Please send an email to Mrs. Fisher ([email protected]) indicating who and what the fees are for. Families new to our school may contact the ofiice to activate this on-‐line banking. Please contact y o u r l o c a l b r a n c h f o r information if assistance is needed.
School TrafSic Trafiic at the school has been re-‐routed again this year with the busses now picking up and dropping off in the front of the school then proceeding through our parking lot and exiting east on Commercial Street. The reason for the change is safety concerns with trafiic moving through our playground. I do realize this does pose some problems with congestion and daycare drop off and pick up. We are asking that no trafiic go behind the school at any time. Daycare parents are to park in the back parking lot and walk their children to the north doors. The school and village will be looking at this in the next week or so and possible changes may occur. Please do not park along the dike in the school parking lot at any time. This will be used for bus park ing . We ask for understanding in the meantime and we are trying to minimize the congestion at drop off and pick up times.
Mr. B. Hauser

Volunteer DriversIn past years we have always depended on
parents to volunteer as drivers for our extra-‐curricular trips. This has helped keep costs down for all participants. All volunteer drivers will be required to have up to date clearance by the RCMP criminal record check and the Child Abuse Registry. Parents/volunteers interested in driving for iield trips and/or volunteering in the classroom must go to their closest RCMP ofiice to complete the paperwork for the Criminal Record Checks. You will need to bring your driver’s license and a second piece of identiiication. A letter from the school must accompany the criminal record check indicating the school is aware of your application.
Child Abuse Registry forms are available from the school or by going to the website: w w w . g o v . m b . c a / f s / c h i l d f a m / child_abuse_registry_form.html
We value our volunteers and hope that you will not mind going through this process. If you are willing to complete the paperwork involved, please contact the school ofiice.
Magazine Campaign Dates of the campaign will be from October 1 -‐ 15th. Please remember us when you are renewing your subscriptions!
Yearbooks The 2011-‐2012 yearbooks have arrived. They are $30 and available from Mrs. Lane. They will also be available for purchase during the TerryFox/Meet The Teacher evening.
Paper OverloadWe have sent many things home
with your children this week. We forwarded information through the youngest family member.
Family registration forms are very important for updating our records of parent contacts, phone numbers, emails and health concerns. These forms are needed as soon as possible.
The school calendar is posted on our website.

Notes from the Transportation Department Welcome back to school! This year has been a challenge in that we have at least one new driver in each of our communities! With new drivers taking on existing routes, it has come to our attention that the Private Lane Policy was not always followed. We intend to ensure all of our routes are in line with Division Policy. In the coming weeks we will be asking drivers to drive down lanes that may be of questionable distance, and document the length of the lane. Our information will be updated and if a change is going to be made, families will be informed. Please see the details of the Private Lane Policy below.
Policy EHH -‐ Private Lanes Bus drivers shall go into a resident’s yard to pick up students only where the residence is a minimum of 0.6 kilometers from the bus route established, the gates are open, the road is suitable for busses, and there is an unobstructed place for the bus to turn around. Any exceptions to this rule will be made by a board designate on a case by case basis.
Procedure EHH -‐ Private Lanes Under normal circumstances the bus driver will not enter a resident’s yard to pick up or drop off a student if the lane is less than 0.6 kilometers long. However, this may be allowed on a case by case basis where the following circumstances exist:
Where in the case of the lane being less than 0.6 km, the student concerned requires transportation either through medical certiiication, as a special needs student, or as a disabled student who may require transportation in accordance with departmental regulations.
The pick-‐up point would also be a turn around point on the bus route, and in the interest of safety, the school bus may be permitted to go into the yard to turn around when it is considered unsafe to do so at the end of the lane.
Where in the opinion of the board designate, the location of the student pick-‐up or drop-‐off is not suitable for reasons of visibility, trafiic level, student age or other safety consideration.
Designated Bus Stops Please be aware that our drivers are only permitted to stop at a student’s place of residence or a pre-‐designated stop.
The Southwest Horizon School Division Bus Handbook for students and parents will be published this fall.
Please direct any questions to either Glynn Warnica, Operations Supervisor, or Lori Couling, Operations Coordinator.
