It is hard to believe summer is winding down and the kids are back in school. The days are certainly getting shorter, but all in all it's been a wonderfulsummer with the monsoonal flow we experienced for an extended period thisyear. Thankfully, we did not have all the hot weather we had last year andwhich many parts of the country experienced this summer as well. WithSeptember and fall, my favorite time of the year just around the corner, I, likemany of you, am welcoming the upcoming changing of seasons. As this is thetime of year I most enjoy getting out on the golf course I hope you too willtake the opportunity and enjoy the next couple of months here at the Club.Upcoming Golf Trip: We have a golf trip planned for Wednesday & Thurs-

day, September 11th & 12th. We are going north and will play Fox Acres (Red Feather Lakesarea) on Wednesday. We will stay at the Hilton in Fort Collins on Wednesday night and thendrive east to Timnath on Thursday morning and play at the Harmony Club a new Jim Enghcourse. I have heard wonderful things about both golf courses and am looking forward to thistrip. We can take up to 20 players, so please give me a call as soon as possible if you areinterested or need additional information, 303-444-2114 ext. 22.Eldora Ski Passes: The wildly popular Lake Valley ski pass program is back for anotheryear. We will again have 8 ski passes for the upcoming 2013/2014 ski season. This greatbenefit allows you to take your family skiing for a day and keep a few hundred bucks in yourpocket. To reserve the passes or for additional information about the program, just give mea call at 303-444-2114 ext. 22 or e-mail at [email protected]. We are excited to be able tobring these passes to you again this year, and I look forward to hearing from all the skiers &boarders who want to take advantage of this tremendous member benefit.Membership News: Last year we introduced a new program whereby you can assign yourmembership on a temporary basis. Be sure to look over the article about Temporary Mem-bership Assignments in this Newsletter. We did have some members that took advantage ofthis program in 2012 and as we are approaching the time of year when some of you headsouth for the winter, I thought it is a good time to mention it to you again. As the article says, don't hesitate to give me a call if you have any questions on how this program works.Preview Membership: We are getting ready to run our successful Preview Membershipagain this fall. This is a great way for your friends to become a part of the Club for a year andto see how well a Lake Valley membership works for them. I hope you will encourage yourfamily and friends to take a serious look at this opportunity and that you will also helppromote the program by forwarding on the Preview Membership flyer we are emailing toyou. We've had a good recruiting year to this point but we really would like to add another10-15 members before the end of the year. Please take a moment and think about who youwould like to introduce to the Club and give me a call at ext. 22 or email me with their namesto [email protected]. As always, we truly appreciate all of you and the support you give tothe Club.

After the first two rounds of the Club Championship (the Men’s ChampionshipFlight plays 54 holes in 3 days) the Championship was anyone’s for the taking.Tony Greif, Jeremy Deems, Ted Kreider and others all had a shot to winalthough Ted’s second day 71 (the lowest score of the event) combined with afirst round 78 had put him in the lead by 2 strokes. Ted played even par golfon the front and seemed to be cruising along and holding the others at bayuntil he carded a double bogey on hole # and followed that up with a triplebogey 6 on #12. In a show of sportsmanship you’ll only see in golf Jeremyencouraged Ted to “hang in there “ which he did ending the round with abirdie on #18 and a smooth 75 for the day. Jeremy finished second with a 230(75,76, 79) Tony Greif was third at 231 and Shawn Mercer was fourth at 234.

In First Flight, Joe Forbes took top honors with a 36 hole total of 156 (81,75).Mitch Galnick was nipping at his heels all day, but took a triple bogey on #15and finished one shot behind at 157 (81, 76)

Mike Stein shot 156 and took won the Second Flight by five shots over TomasPurtell.

In the Third Flight Ken Baird was able to fight off the attempts of his closestpursuers, Mike Anderson and Stan Manzanares, who weren’t able to make upenough ground after the first day. Ken’s two –day total of 165 proved toomuch as he won by 4 shots.

Fourth Flight winner Stuart Kuzminsky fired a 2 day total of 177 to win grosshonors while Jerry McCarthy captured low net with a two over par 142!

Once again it was a runaway victory for perennial Champion Pam Ryan wonthe Women’s Championship Flight. This year marks an unprecedented 16thwomen’s title for Pam!

In the Women’s Regular Flight, Gaye Fairbairn carded a smooth 178 gross toclaim victory while Paula Sinn-Penfold and Joan Schempp tied for Low Netwith 147’s.

The 2013 Club Championship proved to be great fun and great test of golf.

Congratulations to all who participated!

We want to welcome the McAfee’s andhope that Kristine and Sydney catch the golf bug as well!

Peg Romano – Nicklaus TeamPeg came to Colorado from Kalamazoo, Michigan to attend theUniversity of Colorado. Forty years later Peg is still living in andloving Boulder. Peg is a newgolfer and we are excited she is now part of our Lake Valley family.Besides golf, Peg loves dogs, skiing, gardening, flower arranging, hiking and eating - at home and out!

Congratulations to our very own Vance Pollack who fired a 4under 68 on the second day of the Colorado Section Senior PGAwhich was held at Meridian Golf Club on August 19-20. Whenadded to his first round 74, Vance finished in a two-way tie for6th just four shots behind the winner. His stellar score waslargely fueled by a Hole in One on the 158 yard third hole, thesecond ace of his career. Vance’s high finish assured him a spotin the 25th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Cham-pionship which will be played at Creighton Farms and RiverCreek Club in Virginia, October 10-13, 2013. The top finishers in the Southworth willthen earn spots in the 2014 Senior PGA and the Champions Tour National Finals.

We all know the old saying, “those who can, do – those who can’t, teach” it doesn’t quiteapply to Mr. Pollock who obviously does both! Way to go Vance and good luck atNationals.

For those who haven't heard, we had a photo shoot here for Crocs inearly August. They had a team of photographers, models and sup-port folks here along with Hank Haney and spent about 13 hoursmostly on holes 10 thru 13 taking pictures of their products for acatalogue and other marketing purposes. Many members met andhad pictures taken with Hank Haney who was quite engaging andhappy to chat it up and sign autographs. Hank, who played 9 holeswhile things were being set up had many complimentary things tosay about the course especially the greens. In addition to being ahighly ranked teacher, a TV celebrity and the endorser of numerousproducts, Mr. Haney is also, in his words, a "very hands-on owner"of three golf courses. It was all a nice change of pace and interestingto observe.

Temporary Membership Assignments AvailableFrom time to time and for various reasons members have had reason to ask if they could assigntheir memberships to others during times where for one reason or another (injury or surgery, sabbatical, winter home, etc.) they were not going to be able to use them for a while. This concepthas been discussed by the Advisory Board, and we have decided to try a program where assign-ments will be allowed. The general parameters are outlined below. If you feel this program issomething that works to your benefit, please contact Rob in the membership office and he’ll helpyou set it up.Assignments will be for no less than 2 months and no longer than 1 year:

1. There can only be one assignment per 12 months. (The 12 month clock starts on the 1st dayof the first assignment).

2. The same person can only be an assignee (the one using the temporary membership) or partof an assignee family two times regardless of who the assignor is.

3. Your member account must be current at the time of the assignment and the member mustpay dues during the assignment. Any financial arrangements with the assignee are betweenthe parties.

4. There will be a $100 administrative fee charged to the member with each assignment.5. The assignee will be responsible for all charges incurred and will be required to keep a

current credit card on file with the Club.6. Any failure by either party to timely pay dues or fees will result in immediate suspension of

membership privileges.7. Once initiated the length of the assignment may not be altered.8. During the period of the assignment, the member may play unlimited unaccompanied golf

but will be responsible for paying accompanied guest fees.9. The assignee may play in any member events except the Championships (Senior, Couples

Tim Weir and Cheryl Flygare paired up to win the 2013Couple’s Mixed Club Championship by an impressive fiveshots. Their one day gross best ball score of 1 under par69 provided them with a 5 stoke victory over past cham-pions John Atkins and Pam Ryan who finished secondwith 74.

The teams of Ted Kreider and Sharon Atcheson, JoeHladky and Elaine Fritz, and Mitch and Marta Galnick alldeadlocked for low net honors with 10 under par best ballscores of 60!

Paula Sinn-Penfold rallied from a 3 down “dormie” deficit to tie Pam Ryanon the 18th hole. She went on to par the first hole of sudden death to winthe 2013 Women’s Match Play Championship!

Pam didn’t lose this match but Paula won it finishing with a natural birdie, par, par on 16, 17, and 18. Pam also parred #17 and #18 but Paula’s strokeson those 2 holes were winners.

In a repeat performance, 2012 Senior Club ChampRex Roberts proved once again that he had what ittakes to win low gross in the “young guys” flight.Shooting the same 2 day total of 143 that he did lastyear (75,68) Rex came from behind and again out-dueled Bob Groening (148, Net 142) to become the2013 Senior Club Champ. This year’s triumph waslargely fueled by an impressive 4 birdie, no bogeyfront nine of 31 in which Rex hit nothing but quality shots and sank about 75 feetof birdie putts. However, it was not all hard losses for Bob who finished 4th LowNet behind Joe Forbes (138), Mitch Galnick (140) and Tim Weir (141).In the biggest field of the event, the “older” flight (Super Seniors, age 60 to 69),last year’s runner –up John Atkins was victorious as he carded a 154 (76, 78)which was three strokes better than the 157 posted by Bob Fogoros. Coinciden-tally, Bob finished 2 strokes back of John last year. On the Net side of the SuperSeniors, Tomas Purtell prevailed with a smooth 142 (72, 70) followed closely byJim Meneely (144) and newcomer Terry Benjamin who fired a two-day total 146.In the “oldest” flight, the “Masters” (ages 70 and up), Jim Ellis bettered the fielddespite faltering a bit on day two. His 75, 83 (158) was five strokes better thanhis nearest competitor Ray Melvin 153, (137 Net) who captured Low Net honors.Second Low Net went to Joe Hladky with a 142, while Nak Young Choung wasrewarded for his recent hard work on the practice tee with a 3 over 143 net.

In the Women’s Flight Gross winner Pam Ryan carded a 155(76, 79) which was a full 10 shots better than runner-upCheryl Flygare’s 165 and a complete reversal from 2012when Cheryl shot 156 and beat Pam by 11 strokes. Low Netwas captured by Mary Davidson who ran away with thingswith a 1 under 139, some 9 shots better than Joan Schemppwho was followed closely by Cheryl Flygare (149 – 3rd LowNet) and Colene Van Winkle (150 – 4th Low Net).Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all who

played. It was a great turnout for the 2013 Senior Club Championship and wehope to see you all competing again next year!
