September Membership Meeting ReviewSubmitted by Jay Burgmann

Spencer Meagher was the presenter at the September GEAG meeting He demonstrated his approach to

watercolor painting and also contributed to the critique Spencer is also conducting a workshop

September 21st amp 22nd for the guild as well

Deep within his spirit lies a need to express himself that can only be realized through his art His paintings

are an enhanced glimpse into how he views the world around him He tends to avoid the details and let

the color and value tell the story

Spencer first discovered his love for art as a young child He found he was able to express himself

through drawing and painting He refined his skills over many decades with practice and dedication As an

adult he has attended many workshops to gain a better understanding of his craft Spencer now paints

full time and travels all over the country attending competitions and shows as well as teaching

workshops Spencer is a plein air and studio artist who works in watercolor oil and acrylic When he is not

traveling he works out of his studio in Mt Vernon IL

Spencerrsquos work has taken top awards in art competitions around the country and has been exhibited in

many notable galleries His paintings have been featured in publications such as Plein Air Magazine and

Plein Air Today He has also been mentioned in numerous online articles

Spencer has studied with renowned artists Alvaro Castagnet Graham Berry John PLasater IV Joseph

Fettingis Lon Brauer M Shawn Cornell and Sterling Edwards

For his demonstration he painted a lake scene that included a small boat and bridge in the

background Spencer prefers to use 300-pound paper as it doesnrsquot warp like 140-pound paper does He

certainly was not afraid to use heavy color During his demonstration he regaled the members with stories

of plein air painting in the heat and cold as well as a lesson in color theory Creating greens by combining

neutral tint with yellow is a favorite method to get a natural green color He adds ultramarine blue to that

mix to get a deeper green

One thing Spencer has learned is not to push the panic button Instead be patient and keep working it to

push through Most times you will be very surprised at how well the painting turns out Another

recommendation is that if you donrsquot know what to do donrsquot do anything Step back and give it time

Maybe you only see one stroke but that one stroke may lead to several more strokes Another

recommendation is to have your pallet and your painting illuminated the same so you can see paint colors

and values on the pallet as they will be on the painting A final recommendation he suggests is that you

pick up the biggest brush you think you can use then put it down and pick up the next size down This

will help you stay loose

Overall Spencer provided an enjoyable and dynamic demonstration of his watercolor process It was a

true delight to witness him work
