Mikmaq Educators Publish Language WorkbookBy Maureen Googoo
Communications Coordinator
Mi'kmaq educators with L'nu Sipuk
Kina'Muokuom, or LSK School, have published a
classroom workbook aimed at teaching school
children the Mi'kmaq language.
The workbook is titled, L'nuey Klusuaqn
Wi'katikn, which means "Mi'kmaw Work Book" in
Mi'kmaq. The authors of the workbook are:
Becky Julian, Elder and Mi'kmaq language
instructor, LSK School
Velvet Paul, Director of Education/LSK Liaison,
Shubenacadie Band
Karen Francis, Mi'kmaq language and culture
instructor, LSK School
The three educators spent four months compile
the language workbook. I had the book concept
together with the different topics as in the
alphabet, numbers, colours and shapes, Velvet
Paul explained. Karen and Becky began to
translate into Mikmaq, she added.
"I have been working in education for over 15
years with a main goal of educating our students
with a curriculum infused with Mikmaq
language, culture and tradition but there is very
limited classroom resources in Mikmaq
Language for students,Ms. Paul said."The workbook is a common tool that is used in
most schools to teach basic curriculum so we just
put our own twist with Mikmaq language and
cultural and traditional images so that a youngMikmaq student is familiar with in their
communities, she said. The age group that the book targets is early
elementary, but can be a learning tool for all ages,
Ms. Paul explained.
L'nuey Klusuaqn Wi'katikn is priced at $20 per
copy for anyone interested in purchasing the
language workbook. Please contact LSK school
staff at 902-236-3041 for more information on
ordering. Proceeds from book sales will go
towards the Mi'kmaq Language Program at LSK
School.

Tribal Organizations
During the past several months, our Chief and
Council have had a number of in-depth
discussions about tribal organizations in Nova
Scotia and in particular, the Union of Nova Scotia
Indians (UNSI) and the Confederacy of Mainland
Mikmaq (CMM). During these discussions, Chief
and Council reviewed the overall purpose of
tribal organizations and determined the main
purpose of tribal organizations is to provide
administrative support for First Nation
communities and bands.
Keeping this in mind, our Chief and Council
decided it would be in the best interest of our
band explore the types of services currently being
offered to our band by UNSI and do a cross-
comparison with the services that could be
offered by CMM, should we align with this tribalorganization. During this analysis, Chief and
Council learned that CMM already provide our
band various support services and if we were to
align with this tribal organization, we would be
able to access other program, services, and
supports above and beyond what we currently
receive.
After much deliberation, analysis, and
correspondence with officials from each of the
tribal organization, our Chief and Council
decided it would be in our Bands best interest to
leave UNSI and align with CMM.
Chief and Council do acknowledge the historybetween the Shubenacadie Band and UNSI and
our community will be ever grateful for the work
that had be done by this organization to protect
our rights while setting many different
movements in motion during the 1970s, 1980s and
1990s.
As we move forward, we wish all those involved
with UNSI nothing but success. We are excited to
begin our work with CMM and its member
communities in the future.

Halifax, NS October 2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of Mikmaq History
Month in Nova Scotia. In 1993, Premier John Savage and Mikmaw Grand
Chief Ben Sylliboy declared October as the official month to recognize and
celebrate Mikmaq culture and heritage. To commemorate the milestone, a
website was created to promote awareness, share information, and highlight
culturally related events taking place during Mikmaq History Month.
Mikmaqhistorymonth.com will officially launch September 26, 2013, and willprovide an avenue for site visitors to add events, share stories, collaborate and
showcase Mikmaw culture and history, said Chief Wilbert Marshall,
Assembly Lead Chief for Culture, Heritage and Archaeology. It is important
that everyone feels included and welcomed to our events. Mikmaq History
Month is not only a celebration of our history and culture, but also an
opportunity for everyone to learn more about Nova Scotias first people.
We are thrilled to launch the Mikmaq History Month website, it is our goal
to ensure that our communities, the people of Nova Scotia and any visitors to
our region, know about our history and culture, said Deborah Ginnish of the
Mikmaq Association for Cultural Studies, We invite everyone to visit
mikmaqhistorymonth.com and join us as we celebrate throughout October.
Everyone is encouraged and welcomed to participate in Mikmaq History
Month events. Communities, businesses, organizations and schools are ask
to share Mikmaw related events, stories, photos, creations, or musical
contributions.
Please contact Tanya Johnson-MacVicar, Mikmaq History Month Project
Officer, with your information on activities, events, stories, photos, creation

Operations & Maintenance Report for August 2013
By Stephen Knockwood
Director, Operations & Maintenance
This monthly reports includes the water statistical reports for August
2013. The water consumption levels have remained at an average of
487.96 litres per person per day during the past month.
An update further to last months report on the water supply upgrades,
CBCL (engineers for the new well and water plant upgrades) has
completed the bid process and has recommended a contractor for the
system upgrades. Prior to any contract with the proposed contractor,
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) will
need to provide its approval and complete the contribution agreement for
the band. I have explained to both CBCL and AANDC that no further
work can move forward until this funding agreement is in place.
The department has undergone the annual Maxxam Laboratory Audit of
Health Canadas Water Monitoring procedures and testing of staff. The
staff has received improved procedure results but will have to upload the
water samples weekly to the WaterTrax database and ensure recording of
inventory supplies. The audit letter is attached for your review.
The department has assessed the cost of cleaning up ground zero again.
Last spring the total cost for a contractor to use their equipment was
$5,450. To rent a small excavator for a week, the cost will be $1,040 and it
is more cost effective to do the work in-house. This work should be
completed by month end. As reported last month, a decision needs to be
made whether ground zero and the garbage pick-up by our own crew w
continue as it is a huge financial strain for the O&M budget.
I attended an Information Session with Chief Copage in Membertou Firs
Nation last month regarding the proposed First Nation Water Utility.
During a recent technical committee meeting, we have brought to the
attention of the Atlantic Police Congress of First Nation Chiefs (APC) of
the funding policy of AANDC regarding Operations and Maintenance
funding and that the funding ratio is not 80 per cent, Aboriginal Affairs
20 per cent band own-source funding, that this is the maximum funding
and it subject to funding availability. I will be in attendance with Chief
Copage for the upcoming Chiefs meeting at Dalhousie regarding this
proposed First Nation Water Utility to review and the draft incorporatio
terms and bylaws.
The annual Community-based Water Monitors training is scheduled for
November 5-7 in Dartmouth, N.S. This year we have been invited to ma
a presentation to the delegates regarding the cause and ensuing correctiv
measures of last years water crisis. Upon your approval, my staff will
develop a PowerPoint presentation and I am recommending that our
Director of Operations make the presentation on behalf of the band.
If you have any questions regarding my monthly report, please dont
hesitate to discuss with me.

Mikmaq Teen chases her hockey dreams
By Joan Paul
At the early age of five, my daughter, Kreshia E. Robinson-Paul, was
introduce to hockey. Her very first thoughts were of fear for the sport but
after learning that hockey gear would protect her from any potential injuries
she immediately fell in love with the sport of hockey. Throughout her years,
she and I spent countless hours on the road traveling from rink to rink,
tournament to tournament which finally landed her with the opportunity
she is now enrolled in, a full time student at the OHA (Ontario Hockey
Academy). Just days after her 15th birthday, my first born left her home and
all that she knew to pursue her lifetime dream as an elite female hockey
player.
The first two years were very trying for both her and me, physically,
emotionally and financially. I sought out for various funding through
numerous organizations and companies and considering that many
organizations did provide sponsorship many were very skeptical,
considering her age. Now in her third and last year Kreshia has not only
proved to the people who had their doubts but she also has proved to hers
that if you have a dream, a passion, you can do the impossible.
This academy is a high performance academic-athletic school located in
Cornwall, Ontario. OHA teams play across Canada and the USA and train
in one of the best facilities in the country. Kreshia have received a few
awards at tournaments since she has been at the school and she has beenaccepted back to the school for the 2013-2014 season, September June. Th
season will be a very important year for her as she will be attending her
grade 12th year and final year and she is anticipating that she will receive a
Hockey Scholarship from a university neither in Canada or the United
States.
Since she has attended OHA, Kreshia has experienced so much. Living on
First Nation Reserve, you have such trying hardships to battle as a young
person. So for her leaving her home at a young age (15) and to see that ther
is so much more to experience was a blessing to her.
Kreshia has played on a number of teams which included: East Hants
Female Penguins Rep Team; Nova Scotia Raiders Elite Spring Hockey Team
Atlantic Selects Elite Team, just to name a few. She has also traveled and
played all over the Atlantic Provinces, Montreal (where she was scouted foOHA), Niagara Falls, Boston and Saskatoon, to name a few.
Since she has attended this school, she has played hockey in a lot more
places in Canada and the United States. Now, that she is offered this great
opportunity to further enhance her skills and to pursue her lifetime dream
as a female hockey player who could possibly be given the chance to play
with the female Team Canada with the Olympics and can be picked up by
universities anywhere in Canada or USA.
Upon receive numerous funding over the past few years and although we
(Kreshia & I) are very grateful we would like to express our gratitude to the
Dreamcatcher Charitable Foundation for their generous donation. Withou
your kind donation, Kreshia might not have been able to pursue her
academics at the OHA for the year of 2013-14. Once again, Kreshia and I
thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
A message for any young athlete out there who are pursuing their dreams,
please remember, if you have the heart, passion for any sport or goal in life
follow your dream, regardless what other may say because time and time
again the impossible has been broken.
Kreisha E. Robinson-Paul, left.
