Labour Day public holiday to move to OctoberAttorney-General and Minister for Justice, Jarrod Bleijie has introduced the Holidays and Other Legislation

Amendment Bill 2012 to move the Labour Day public holiday to the first Monday in October.Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the amendments will reverse the previous government’s

decision to move the Queen’s Birthday public holiday from the second Monday in June to the first Monday in October and instead move Labour Day from May to this date.

“We made the decision to keep the Queen’s Birthday public holiday consistent with all other states and territories with the exception of Western Australia,” he said.

“By moving the Labour Day public holiday to October it will break up the concentration of public holidays that generally fall in the April-May period and provide a break to workers during the second half of the year because of an even spread of public holidays.

“It will mean that the Labour Day public holiday in Queensland will now be the same time as it is in New South Wales, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.

A review of the 2011 amendment to the Holiday Act 1983 found that most people were in favour of Labour Day being moved to the latter part of the year instead of the Queen’s Birthday public holiday. In the review 95 per cent of the respondents supported the move of a public holiday to the second half of the year.

Mr Bennett said the reinstatement of the Queen’s Birthday public holiday back to June will also boost tourism in a traditionally quiet time of the year.

“Having the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in early June makes sense from a tourism perspective as it encourages people to make the most of the extra day off and take a mini-break away to come and enjoy the beauty and excitement of Bundaberg and our region,” he said.

“This change should also result in little, if any, additional costs to business in relation to penalty rates or paid days off as the number of public holidays per year has not increased - it is simply changing the time of the year in which Labour Day is observed.”

The changes to Queensland’s public holiday schedule will come into effect for 2013.

August turned out to be a hit and miss affair with a few real good days for a window of opportunity for some to grab trips outside, including yours truly. Anyone who ventured out was rewarded with some real good catches with Snapper being the fish on the menu.

I was taking the wife and Mother-in-law for a short day out on Tuesday the 14th to 1770 so we stocked up with a picnic, flasks etc. and set off, when I was just entering the town of 1770 at about 11.30am my phone rang. Jenny, my wife, answered the phone and said it’s Kev he wants to know if you want to go fishing at

1.30pm for an overnighter? Well that was a no brainer and after a quick U-turn I headed straight home to grab my gear. To cut a long story short the trip was fantastic with all on board catching a real good feed mainly Snapper, Spangled Emperor, Jacks, nice sized Hussar, Nanighai, Red Throat, and Sweetlip. It took three days and a promise of dinner plus a trip to the movies for the wife to talk to me, the mother-in-law is still scowling at me. I think it’s because I took the flasks and all the picnic goodies for the trip!

All the rivers from the Baffle to the Burrum have been fishing well for Bream with some Bream going to 40cm and near a kilo in weight. Fish real close to the rock walls and up the rivers, remember these fish have migrated into our river systems to breed; they do not breed in the mouths of river but into the river system itself. One example is some fantastic catches in the Baffle at the Ferry Crossing. The better fishing has been up river, in the Burnett the town reach is the go. The bait of choice is fresh Mullet strips fresh Prawn, and Yabbies, and don’t forget the berley. Included in the catches are a few Flathead and some have been oversize so, unless you want to feel the force of the law, throw them back. I personally believe like the big Jenny Mud Crab, plus Flathead over a metre are barren and unable to breed anymore, the oversize Jenny Mud crabs have been proven to kill any smaller buck crabs looking to breed with her.

I do all types of fishing although I must admit I am unable to go kayaking, mainly due to knee problems, but those that do have fantastic success and are able to get where boaties can’t, this advantage lifts their strike rate heaps. I was talking to two young fellows up at the Ferry Crossing who had a nice bag of Bream a couple of beaut Flathead plus a Barra, yep a nice Barra, they reckoned that it was cheaper than a tinnie, easy to launch anywhere, and keeps them fit, although they did have electric motors attached.

The dams are still a bit slow with the Barramundi still sluggish due to the cold nights, they should pick up this month. The Barra are sunning themselves in the shallower water near drop offs, the Fred Haig dam also called Monduran Dam is fishing OK for Barra and Bass although still schooling. Due to the few weeks of warmer weather Bass are starting to show signs of coming on the bite and some good sizes have been recorded. Fishing for Bass and Golden Perch in the timbers, worms down deep mid to late afternoon and hard bodied lures have been doing the damage, mainly Halco hard bodied on the Barra, also spinners alongside the weed beds and edges of the timbers has worked well for Bass and the odd Saratoga, most dams are fishing the same.

Best fishing days for the month of September from Thursday 30th August to September 3rd and Friday the 14th to Wednesday the 19th also Friday the 28th to October the 3rd, all these dates have big high tides between 7 and 10am. Checkout: www.bundysportfishing.com.au.

Tickets will be available at the gate or alternatively tickets can be pre-purchased from the Lomani Au Tent at this years’ Bundy in Bloom Family Fun Day at Alexandra Park on Sunday, September 9. All monies raised from this evening go direct to the Lomani Au Childrens Home.

Naturopathic Information by Rebecca Lang BHSc (Comp Med)Insomnia and Sleep

At this time of the year, with so many viruses and flus around it is important to keep your immune system functioning at its best. Along with a healthy diet, reducing stress and introducing herbal supplements, sleep is another essential factor that needs to be considered.

Human sleep is possibly one of the least understood physiological processes. Sleep is absolutely essential to both the body and mind. Many health conditions, particularly depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety and fibromyalgia are either entirely or partially related to sleep deprivation or disturbed sleep.

As with other health conditions, the most effective treatment for insomnia is based on identifying and addressing the causing factors. The most common causes are psychological: depression, anxiety and tension. Other causes may include various foods, drinks and medications, acute or chronic pain, hormonal factors, along with being disturbed by a partner with snoring etc., sleep apnea, restless legs etc.

The functions of sleep include: rejuvenates our body renewing energy, through the process of self-detoxification; recharge the immune system and repairs any damage done to the body; helps process, sort and store experiences learnt, felt, or experienced during the day; promotes growth, enhances memory, sharpens the mind, stabilisers the emotions and slows the aging process......so why wouldn’t you want to know about how to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep?

Exactly how much sleep an individual needs various from one person to the next. We do know that sleep needs tend to decrease with age and that women require more sleep than men (so us girls should be allowed to sleep in!!). Teenagers require a lot more sleep and the elderly tend to sleep less at night but doze more during the day. Recent studies indicate that our best time for sleeping, from a healing and weight loss point of view, is from 9pm to 5am, so ideally we would go to bed early. Adenosine and growth hormones start to be produced after 9pm. Half hour sleep before midnight = 2 hours of sleep after midnight. The body will actually burn fat during sleep so enough

restorative sleep = weight loss. Set the time to go to bed at night and wake up in the morning and stick to it.

Beginning a regular exercise program that elevates the heart rate by fifty to seventy five percent for at least twenty minutes per day will assist with sleep. Just be sure to do it during the day and not at night time.

Part of ‘Sleep Hygiene Tips’ would include: unwinding at night; adding lavender essential oil to a bath, shower or pillow; meditation; breathing exercises; low level lighting; relaxing music; counting as you are trying to fall off to sleep; avoiding TV (especially in bed) or using computers or phones one hour before bed as the light stops melatonin from being released and stimulates the wakefulness chemicals – cortisol; preferably remove all electrical items from the bedroom as electromagnetic radiation disrupts sleep and restorative hormones; and avoid Tyramine rich foods.

Tyramine rich foods should be avoided after 5pm as tyramine increases cortisol and can exacerbate insomnia. These foods include: bananas (the riper, the higher in tyramine), pizza, processed and cured meats, avocado (the riper, the higher in tyramine), liver (especially pate), caviar, cheese (except cream and cottage cheeses), chocolate, alcohol (especially red wine and champagne), and soy, soya sauce, tofu, miso and tempeh.

Anxiolyic and hypnotic herbs can be quite powerful in treating insomnia and sleeplessness. They can assist with duration in time in falling asleep as well as frequent waking. The correct combination will also allow a person to awake refreshed and not groggy. It is important to receive advice from a qualified Naturopath if you would like an effective response. Correct and treatment dosages are essential to receive therapeutic benefit.

Valerian will assist with sleep onset and maintenance, as well as assist in waking refreshed. There are two species of valerian which are European and Mexican. Children and people with vivid dreams respond best to the Mexican species. Other sleep herbs include Lemon Balm (stress); Passionflower (sedative); Zizphus (irritability, palpitations and night sweats is hypnotic); magnolia (anxiety and depression) etc. A qualified

naturopath can also dispense Kava (except in Western Australia). Kava needs to be dispensed only by a naturopath as it is essential that it is only extracted with water or may cause health problems. Kava is the one herb that is the closest to a pharmaceutical sleeping tablet, in the Herbal Kingdom. A combination of three herbs enhances the quality of each herb. Some herbs can be taken throughout the day to calm the nervous system down and prepare the body for rest at night.

Calcium, especially in food, has a sedative effect and a deficiency will cause restlessness and wakefulness. In tablet form, it is best to avoid the carbonated form of calcium, as most people have difficulty with absorption. Calcium will assist in regulating melatonin levels.

And the Old Wives Tale about having a glass of milk helping with sleep is actually true, that is, providing you do not have a dairy intolerance. L-tryptophan is found in milk and turkey and will convert to serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a sleep inducting neurotransmitter. L-tryptophan also enhances the brain’s ability to produce melatonin. ELECTRICAL AND DATA

Finding the right home lighting for your needsWhen it comes to home lighting, the choice of

lights, lamps, fittings, fixtures and finishes is endless, but the friendly staff at Hayman’s Electrical can help you get the very best result for every part of your home, both inside and out.

These days, recessed down lights are among the most popular choices for living areas, contributing a stylish, modern feel to any home. Down lights can also be used to highlight architectural features, even an attractive ceiling moulding, or just to add different effects with the use of different colour temperature lamps. Dimming is another way to create different moods for the various areas in your house.

Pendant lights and oyster lights are other practical and attractive options for living spaces and bedrooms, as are lights incorporated into ceiling fans.

Kitchen - Of all the rooms in the house, the kitchen lighting requires the most attention to detail. Food preparation and cooking areas must have plenty of clear light to ensure safety and there must also be adequate general light. A good approach is to use reflected light for general lighting throughout the kitchen and a combination of cabinet lighting or pendant lights to achieve stronger levels of light in the work areas.

There is a huge range of decorative energy efficient light fixtures for kitchens to choose from. Whether you’re looking for something traditional or modern, economical or expensive there are light fixtures to suit your needs.

Children’s bedrooms - It can be great fun decorating a child’s room, but as these rooms can serve many functions, depending on the age of the child, there are a few considerations when it comes to lighting.

As a general room light, a ceiling mounted oyster or pendant light with a single or twin clear light bulb is ideal. For young children, add some fun with a novelty light fitting or coloured shade. There are also wall lights and spot lights in a range of colourful designs and shapes children will love - the options are virtually limitless.

Study area - choose a desk fitting to provide focused light for homework, reading and hobbies. A desk or study fitting that uses a LED lamp source is proving to be very popular.

Whatever your lighting requirement, contact the staff at Haymans, no job is too big or too small.

Phone the friendly team now, on 4152 2755 or call into the showroom at 26 Burrum Street.

1. Insert a disc into your CD or DVD drive, the autoplay box will appear. 2. Click burn files to disc. 3. Type in your title for the disc. 4. Click like a USB flash player. 5. Click next, at this point Windows will automatically format the disc and a box will appear showing you its progress. When it’s formatted an autoplay box will appear. 6. Click the x and close. 7. Open the file/folder you want to copy to the disc. 8. Select the files, at this point if you clicked show more detail you will get the total size of the files etc. you have selected. 9. Click burn.

Most CDs can hold around 650MB of information, a normal word document A4 size is approximately 50KB so on each disc you can store around 12,000 or up to 13,000 1MB files on a single disc. Normally with CD-R and DVD-R discs after you have done your copies and finalised the disc you can’t copy more files etc. to it, well with Windows 7 it has a brand new system that will let you copy, recopy, and also delete files folders etc. it is more user friendly.

If you use a CD-RW or DVD-RW here’s an easy way to clear the info on it you no longer require. To erase the disc:1. Click start. 2. Click computer. 3. Right click the disc icon. 4. Click format, at this point the format dialog box will appear. 5. Type in the name of your new project. 6. Click on start, Windows will give you a warning that you are about to erase all the info on the disc. 7. Click OK and your disc will be wiped clean for further use.

Windows 7 allows you to burn more info or details to the disc and deletes files; this is particularly useful for most businesses that back up each night. It not only saves on discs but they don’t have to copy to a say Thumb Drive and then transfer that to a file at the end of the week then burn it to disc.

It seems there is a new wave of backyard operators at work in Bundaberg, there are more and more people coming in with tales of woe, losing vital information, email contacts, photos etc. or computers being returned in a worse condition than when they went in for so called repairs. Be aware if the person that is going to work on your computer has NO business address except his backyard shed, or operates by mobile phone or offers the job at lower cost in exchange for a cash payment and no receipt, do not take the chance. Use a legitimate computer repair business.

There are cases of people trying to get a four to five-year-old computer repaired, the price of a new motherboard a CPU etc. plus labour and installation of programs you may as well get a new system with new components, after four years of age it’s hard to obtain new parts so most parts are cheap and nasty, recycled second-hand parts which, frankly, AMS Computers will not use because the solder used to repair the boards etc. is inferior so they don’t last

long. The market is flooded at the moment

with cheap computers, that’s exactly what they are cheap computers, this type of advertising is to get you, the customer, into the store so that the sales person can upsell you. The advert is what’s called a leader advert, why buy a pair of plastic shoes made in China for $29, when you can get a pair of leather Julias Marlow shoes for $39?

AMS Computers had a lady come in to get her Laptop fixed it was four days over warranty and the shop she purchased it from said too bad it’s out of warranty here’s a number to ring. Jenny, from AMS Computers, rang the agent in Brisbane explained the situation, removed and downloaded the information the lady wished to keep, parcelled up the Laptop and sent it down on the Tuesday, the laptop was promptly repaired free of charge, AMS replaced her information, and she had her computer back by Friday now that’s “service” that’s why AMS Computers is Bundaberg’s No1 Independent computer store.

AMS Computer Services donates approximately 50 used computers every month to Wide Bay Volunteers so that they can bring some of them back to life, these are then donated to others less fortunate than ourselves, this in turn helps people get jobs and kids with school work. The volunteers at Wide Bay Volunteers also get experience in repairing computers so everyone is a winner for AMS Computers it’s Locals Helping Locals.

If there is something you are not quite sure of with Windows7 just send an email to [email protected] with your questions and problems and we will, with the help of the trained technicians at AMS Computer Services, be sure to answer it.

Do Not Let Your Pool Become a Victim of Salt Attack!

The damage caused by salt attack around swimming pools can be catastrophic but thankfully we can assist in assuring this type of damage never occurs to your pool surround and coping.Below are a few examples

of SALT WATER ATTACK to PAVERS and SANDSTONE around a pool environment.

The reason salt attack causes so much damage is that once a salt crystal rehydrates after drying out it can expand upwards of 200 times its original size. That means that if it gets into a tiny space/hole in the paver or sandstone surface (this can be as small as a pin head) & is allowed to re-hydrate (which is unavoidable), your pool surrounds and/or pavers will be exposed to rapid deterioration.

The solution is as simple as a ONE stage treatment process with SYNERGY a Klen International (74) Pty Ltds a Natural Penetrative Sealer.

One in five Queenslanders has a disability of some kind, and disability touches the lives of most Queenslanders in some way—through the experiences we have with friends and family, at school, in the workplace and in the community.

Everybody has a role in creating a truly welcoming and inclusive community, from businesses and government to community organisations and individuals. Disability Action Week, September 9 to 15, is our opportunity to come together in our communities to achieve this vision.

The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring our community is safe, welcoming and inclusive of people with a disability, their families and carers. This includes providing equal access to housing, health services, education and work, sport and recreation, the arts and cultural activities.

During Disability Action Week the All Abilities Sports and Health Expo will be held at the Bundaberg Civic Centre on Wednesday, September 12 from 9am to 12pm.
