Look to our September windows for the latest efforts of two of RAL’s

most productive artists.Ann Vliet, who turned 84 in August,

is a dynamo whose constant flow of top quality art is ever evolving. Her win-dow features portraits of people in their environments, powerful works that tell the subject’s life story through color and expression.

Sukey Starkey, known for her whim-sical mosaics, has included abstract se-

lections in the September win-dow. “I’m trying to branch out and try new things”, she says. “It keeps your work fresh and exciting. You need that.”

Starkey’s materials, arranged in bins in her studio, include stained glass and tiles ordered on line and bits of china donated by friends.

From the mosaic courses of-fered in Maryland where she lived prior to moving to Ophelia, Starkey say that she learned that all ages, men and wom-en, could do mosaics and quickly, too. That a project could be completed in a weekend was amazing she says.

Vliet has painted in oil, watercol-or and acrylics. (She switched from oil to watercolor, she says, when she found that the latter was “easier on the lungs”.)

She is particularly proud of her pio-neering achievements in digital art.

Her digital art entry in an early Labor Day show was made fun of, she says, but the picture of a little bird on a bird-house got a red ribbon.

She remembers that the RAL mem-ber who congratulated her on her win asked “Did you know what you were doing?” “The truth was that I didn’t,” Vliet says. “I just jumped in and tried it for fun.”

Since the 1890s, the name Cartier has been synonymous with sparkle, glamour, and opulence. But behind the

iridescent jewels lies a tale of multiple inventions, famous clients, cutting-edge design, and a love affair with material, color, and fashion. In this lecture, you’ll explore these tales and see examples of the various styles Cartier popularized from 1900 to the 1950s.
