CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION ELMA, NEW YORK

On August 22nd, the feast of the Queenship of Mary, individualsand prayer groups around the diocese began praying a novena (9days) to Our Lady “Undoer of Knots.” It comes at a painfultime for the Church at Buffalo as we go through the valley ofdarkness keeping our eyes fixed on Christ. St. Paul writes:"Where sin abounds, grace abounds more." (Romans 5:20.)

The history of this devotion goes back to the 17th century whenthe marriage of a German couple was reconciled. Pope Francishas done much to popularize the devotion. He discovered theimage of Mary while he was studying in Freiburg, Germany inthe 1980's. Upon his return to Argentina, he spread the devotionfor its efficacy in the resolution of seemingly unsolvableissues of marital, family, community and church strife. You canfind the novena online: Our Lady Undoer of Knots. CardinalJorge Bergoglio, future Pope Francis, composed and added thisprayer to the novena.

Holy Mary, full of God's presence during the days of yourlife,

“PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN”WORKSHOP- VIRTUS TRAINING

The Church of Annunciation will be hosting a “ProtectingGod’s Children” Workshop on Saturday, September 7, 2019from 9 AM - 12:30 PM. Parish and Catholic school employees andvolunteers, over the age of 18, who work with children and youngpeople in the Diocese of Buffalo, are required to attend a sexualabuse awareness session. TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 1, 2019

Parents and children often enter into “negotiations” over how muchallowance is to be earned at certain ages. Typically, when a childseeks an increase in allowance, parents will attach an increase inchores and responsibilities for them to better earn the increase. Talkabout what kind of allowance you received as a child and what kindof responsibilities your parents expected of you to earn your allow-ance.

Explain that in this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus talks about doing gooddeeds for others and expecting nothing in return. Read aloud Luke14:1,7-14. Ask your children how they would feel if you told themto take on more chores without ever expecting another raise inallowance. Emphasize that Jesus teaches us that it is our duty as hisfollowers to take care of the needs of others and to do so withoutexpecting repayment. Discuss what other types of rewards we canfind when doing good things for others.

Point out that we sometimes fall into the trap of wanting too manythings and that, in the Our Father, we pray for “our daily bread,”meaning that we pray for only that which we really need in life.Conclude this time together by praying aloud the Our Father.
