“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” –Robert Frost
AFOC STUDENT SUCCESS STORY We congratulate graduate Ramon Castro on his new endeavor. His success story was recently featured on the WEAREDACE website. Mr. Castro completed three classes: Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning 1, 2 and 3, which fulfill the I-train course entitled “Air Conditioning Technician Trainee.” The caliber of training that Mr. Castro received at Abram Friedman Occupational Center was such that he was able to not only secure immediate employment from an HVAC company, but in a span of a few months after being hired, was able to venture into establishing his own successful HVAC business. Looking back on his training at AFOC, Mr. Castro values the hands-on experience he had in class under the guidance of his instructor, Eric Pena, saying, "I read the book at home and came to class ready to learn how to handle HVAC problems in the real world.” He is also grateful to his career coach, Jessica Fuentes, of Vernon-Central WorkSource Center, who guided him through the process from start to employment. We are very proud of Mr. Castro and wish him the best.
PATRIOT DAY AND NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE
In memory of the nearly 3, 000 people
who were killed in the September 11,
2001, terrorist attacks, each year in the
United States we observe Patriot Day
and National Day of Service and
Remembrance.
MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
September 16 is Mexico's Indepen-
dence Day. On this day in 1810,
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rallied
Mexicans to rebel against Spanish
colonial rule. Mexico pulls out all the
stops to celebrate its culture, pride,
history, and, most importantly, its
independence.
CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH The National Council of Hispanic Employ-ment Program Managers (NCHEPM) announced the 2018 Hispanic Heritage Month theme: “Hispanics: One Endless Voice to Enhance our Traditions.” The theme invites us to reflect on Hispanic American's tradition, history and culture. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The Hispanic Heritage observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. Visit www.nationalhispanicmonth.org for the full article and useful resource links.

District encourages the cultivation of
positive relationships with students,
employees and all individuals who work

reminded that they must be mindful of the
fine line drawn between being sensitive to

or perceived breach of responsible, ethical
behavior. Employees and individuals who
work with or have contact with students
are expected to use good judgment and are
cautioned to avoid the situations indicated
in the "Code of Conduct with Students."
When allegations of inappropriate conduct

NATIONAL ADULT EDUCATION AND FAMILY LITERACY WEEK
The 2018 National Adult Education and

public awareness about the need and value
of adult education and family literacy in
order to leverage resources to support
access to basic education programs for the
