The Power of Prayer Disaster has struck with the devastation brought on by Hurricane Harvey. High winds, flooding, power outages, and fires have led to people losing their homes, their family members, their way of living, and even their own lives.

They have lost everything that many of us just take for granted.

What is left for them now is to somehow pick up the pieces, and somehow rebuild their lives and their homes. We need to support these people any way we can and keep them in our prayers. Jesus said, “Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.”

This is one of these sayings of Jesus we need to probe, or else we will be left with heartbreak and great disappointment. I am sure the people of Houston were praying that Harvey would not hit their city. So we just cannot take this saying of Jesus literally at face value. There is no point in refusing to face the facts of the situation, nothing but harm can result from teaching people to expect what does not happen. God is not Santa Claus. When we come to see what this saying means, there is precious depth in it.

This saying means that prayer must never be selfish. Selfish prayer cannot find an answer. We are not meant to pray for only for our own needs, thinking of nothing and no one but ourselves. We are meant to pray as members of a fellowship, in agreement, remembering that life and the world are arranged not for us as individuals but for the fellowship as a whole. It would often happen that if our prayers were answered, the prayers of someone else would be disappointed, especially if you are praying for the Vikings to win the Super Bowl. Effective prayer must be the prayer of agreement, from which the element of selfish concentration on our own needs has been wiped away.

When prayer is unselfish it is always answered, not in the way we desire, but in the answer which God in his wisdom and his love knows to be best. Because we are human beings, with human hearts and fears and hopes and desires, most of our prayers are prayer for escape. We pray to be saved from some trial, like the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey. God’s answer is not the offer of escape, but of victory. God does not give us escape from a human situation. God enables us to endure what without him would be unendurable. God enables us to face what without him would be beyond facing. The perfect example of all this is Jesus in Gethsemane. He prayed to be released from the fearful situation which confronted him. He not was released from it; but he was given the power to meet it, to endure it, and to conquer it. When we pray unselfishly, God sends his answer—but the answer is always his will and not necessarily ours.

So, we send our thoughts and prayers to all who are affected by Harvey. When we do this we are following the second greatest commandment, echoed by Saint Paul in today’s second reading from the Letter to the Romans: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” “For the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. When we love our neighbor as ourselves, we maintain solidarity with our neighbor. When we pray for our neighbors we express our love for them and God.

So let us pray in thanksgiving for the gift of prayer, that we use it to help ourselves and others in time of trial.—TB

Stewards Among Us

Deacon Kevin Downie

Deacon is out of the Hospital! I was able to have my neck surgery on this past Thursday at St. Mary's in Rochester. I was able to come home just a couple days later, on Sunday afternoon. I am rehabbing at home for however long it takes. I am keeping Linda's John Deere gassed up for her! They removed all my cancer, located in my left tonsil and lymph node and I now am left to heal up for a couple weeks. I think there will be a minor plan to follow up with some low dose radiation to the area as a prudent action to catch any leaker cells. Linda and I want to send out our THANK YOU! to all of you at both parishes for your best wishes and prayers, cards and flowers. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Until I return to altar, I will count on all of you to keep Fr. Terry on his toes. GO, AND ANNOUNCE THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD! Thanks be to God! Deacon Kevin

Living as Disciples 3

Prayer For Protection During a Storm

Loving God, maker of heaven and earth,

protect us in your love and mercy.

Send the Spirit of Jesus to be with us,

to still our fears and give us confidence.

In the stormy waters,

Jesus reassured his disciples by his presence,

calmed the storm, and strengthened their faith.

Guard us from harm during this storm

and renew our faith to serve you faithfully.

Give us the courage to face all difficulties

and the wisdom to see the ways your Spirit binds us

together in mutual assistance.

With confidence

we make our prayer

through Jesus Christ

our Lord.

6 Our Parish Community

We are blessed to add one more talented, creative, and dedicated person to our team. Welcome, Mrs. Wentzler!

Mrs. Brandy Wentzler, Pre-Kindergarten Hi, my name is Brandy Wentzler and I am excited to be joining the St John's School PreK team! I am an alumni and parish member of St. John's. I've had roles in this parish as a youth leader, volunteer faith formation teacher, and cantor. For 17 years I worked as an American Sign Language interpreter for the classroom, business office, hospital, and stage. These days I work part-time for the Pleasant Hill Library. I have three kids, two of whom are or have been St John's students. My husband is a long-time music educator. We all live together on the family homestead, Stoney Knolls, along with one dog, four cats, thirteen chickens, big gardens, and a blueberry patch. I look forward to all of the growing and learning our new PreK students will be doing this year.

Ready for another year of personal growth.
