The parish office will be closed on Monday,
September 20. Thank you.
Why is it so important that we register in a parish? Isn't it good enough that we go to Mass?
Registration is the official way we join our parish community. Many people think that because they attend a
particular parish they automatically belong. At times, young adults who have moved away for years think
they are still signed up under their parents. But membership requires signing up, formally enrolling yourself
in our parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social, and
ministerial activities of our parish. Your registration affects our parish in many ways. Census numbers can
determine how many priests are assigned to our church, what benefits and obligations the community has
to the diocese, and how Masses, Confessions, and devotions are planned and scheduled. Registration shows
you belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certifi-
cates, and getting donation statements for taxes. Most importantly, it lets our parish count on you, to call on
you to assist in our mission. Registering in our parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and
work of our parish.* You can register online at ourladyoflourdes.org under the tab “Parish Life” Become a
Member. *Reprinted with permission from Our Lady of Lourdes, Pittsburg KS

As we observe the 20
th
Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks
on our nation, we keep in prayer those who were
affected by those attacks, those who serve in our
nation’s military and protective services today, those
who continue to suffer from violence, and the desire
for peace throughout the world.
I’ve received occasional questions and observations
about the reception of Communion during the time
that Covid has impacted our Masses. Primarily, in
relation to receiving the Host in the hand, the
appropriate way to receive and consume the
Communion Host while wearing a mask. The most
important thing is to consume the Host right away,
when you are standing before the altar. You can
lower your mask just before receiving the Host, or
receive the Host and then lower your mask and
consume the Host. At all times, a Host shouldn’t be
taken back to one’s pew and then consumed.
Receiving at the altar makes the important
connection between the consecration and offering of
the sacrifice that takes place at the altar and the
receiving of the one who is now present. It also avoids
any accidental dropping of the Host or other
situations that could occur along the way. This
reminder isn’t meant to criticize anyone who did not
realize this, but to remind and provide clarification
about this important way of acknowledging and
respecting the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
All are invited to the Basi Family Concert Fundraiser
for Down’s Syndrome in church this Sunday
afternoon. Details are elsewhere in this bulletin.

The 33
rd
Annual Oktoberfest is back! This event,
brought to you by Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, will be
held Sunday, October 3
rd
, from 11:30 a.m.–5 p.m. It
promises to be a fun-filled day of food, music, games,
and — most importantly — community! Live music
from Zach Simpson and Scott Denson will lift your
spirits while you enjoy delicious food and a refreshing
drink under the shaded beer and dinning tents. The
kids will stay entertained with carnival games, and a
bounce house, while enjoying cotton candy and root
beer floats. And don’t forget to purchase your raffle
tickets in advance for a chance to win $5,000! Mark it
on your calendar, and plan to enjoy the company of
fellow parishioners on a beautiful October day while
also supporting Our Lady of Lourdes Parish!
Volunteers will be needed to staff the many activities
and make this event a success — and we need your
help! This is an excellent stewardship opportunity
and way to give back. Be looking for a volunteer
signup in the near future, or reach out to Dave Ries at
[email protected] or text mobile at 913-707-

Thank you to the generosity of the OLL parishioners
who donated food for the Loaves and Fishes meal
on August 30 and to the numerous people who
called to donate. A special thank you to the Hart-
man and Tembrook families for donating the hot-
dogs. Thank you to Fr. Chris for allowing us to col-
lect food donations in Flanagan Hall. Approximately
140 people were served a meal at Loaves and Fishes
on August 30. A big thank you to Mike Maag who
took the time to grill over 200 hotdogs. Thank you to
the following who prepared and packaged the
meals: Carol Nierling, Carol Fay, Anna Franklin,
Leticia Pulley, Cheryl Scherer and Geri Pederson,
Diana Hartman and Samantha Hartman. Thank
you also to MU student volunteers, Makenna,
Makayla, and Jasmine for their help. As always,
those we fed were very appreciative of the meal. We
will serve a meal again on November 29. Please
watch the November bulletins for more informa-
tion. For more information about Loaves and Fishes

The OLL Music Ministry is looking
for additional musicians, especially
those who are proficient at piano
and/or organ. We also need
additional singers, both
independent Cantors and choir
members, so you don't have to
sing solo to help the Parish. If you

G O S P E L M E D I T A T I O N
We need to get our bearings straight and properly lay life’s cornerstone.
Otherwise, the rest of our journey will be skewed, and our judgment
clouded. We can recall Jesus’ famous rebuke of Peter, “You are thinking
not as God does, but as human beings do.” Even he, as one of Jesus’
closest friends struggles with understanding things and grasping the
big picture. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) a renowned and
learned French Jesuit priest often has these words attributed to him:
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual
beings having a human experience.” Whether they were actually from
his lips, they certainly mimic his thought. These wise words orient us and
capture the essence of who we really are.
Many people consider spirituality an option. It is no wonder that they
come to this conclusion when they predominantly define themselves
using human terms and concepts. Immersed in this world view, they
struggle finding any semblance of God because God does not work
according to human expectations! This is especially true when suffering
and death enter life’s picture. If we are only human beings having a
spiritual experience, then we wrongly expect our spirituality to serve us
as we desire. The human expectation is that my spiritual life is
something that is useful in avoiding pain, hardship, and death, not
something that gives the courage to live through it!
So, when we protest and get upset with God because our journey is
becoming difficult, painful, treacherous, disappointing, and even
pointing us toward death, Jesus rebukes us as he did Peter and gently
reminds us how to see. It is God who inspires and opens hearts to see
truth and beauty. In God, the true meaning of things is understood, and
we receive a depth of insight and understanding that is not found
following purely human paths. It is not our task to understand God, as
God is beyond human understanding. Ours is the joyful privilege of
simply resting in God’s presence simply because God is God and we are
who we are. As spiritual beings having an exciting and adventurous
human experience, it is in our DNA to do so. Through prayer we can let
go and let be. This is how we lose our lives but then save them.
