ABOUT OUR ORATORIANS PRIESTS AND NEW YORK ORATO-

RY OF ST. PHILIP NERI

There are 75 Oratories of Saint Philip of Neri planted in many conti-nents and nations of the world. In the United States there are 8 of them. The oldest is in Rock Hill, SC, founded in 1947, the youngest in New York estab-lished in 2007. All Oratories of Saint Philip Neri have something in common, and also characteristics that make each of them unique. Each Oratory wants to reconnect with the exemplary life of the first disciple of Jesus and relive their Spirit-driven enthusiasm and love. Each Oratory cherishes the joyful spirit of Saint Philip and his loving concern for the salvation of all. The Oratories are like Benedictine abbeys. They en-joy their own autonomy, self-government, and stability where one is born into a loving spiritual family, works as member of a team with his brothers and sisters, is free to leave at any time, but because of community's love chooses in freedom to stay until death. The priests of the Oratory do not make religious vows, but commit to live in community. The foundation of New York Oratory was initiated by Cardinal O'Connor in 1999, and established by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007, while Cardinal Egan was Arch-bishop of New York. There are at the present 9 priests in New York Orato-ry, a special grace of the Lord indeed. As you already may know, they serve the pastoral duties in 4 parishes in Rockland County, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Tappan, St. John the Baptist in Piermont, St. Paul in Congers and St. Ann in Nyack. Besides this pastoral work New York Oratorians are also involved in communications, and healing minis-tries. What is unique to the New York Oratory is the inter-national make up of its community, and its freedom to undertake any form of evangelization, provided it glori-fies God and saves souls. The Oratories are not made of priests alone. As a matter of fact, the first Oratory of St. Philip was made up of lay people. In every church served by Oratorian priests, a lay Oratory is formed as well. It is a commu-nity where lay people, aware of their unique responsi-bility to spread the Gospel values in our society, search how to find ever renewed ways to serve their brothers and sisters. May the Lord help us "to do something beautiful for God!" Fr. George – Provost of Oratory
