Preparation for WorshipWelcome to Second Presbyterian Church! If you are visiting with us, we are especially glad you are here. You will notice that Scripture suffuses every part of our worship services. For example:

• We call one another to our awesome task of worshipping God with Scripture.• We sing God’s praise with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs in order to

make God’s Word memorable and vivid.• The Spirit uses God’s Word to convict us of sin and to show us our fresh

need for His forgiveness and grace.• We use the precious promises of God’s Word to assure us of His pardon.• We give attention to reading His Scriptures because faith comes by hearing

the Word of God.• His Word equips us to live for Christ and to make an impact for His

kingdom during the perilous times in which we live.• Lastly, God sends us out with His blessing to serve a needy world.

Why do we make such a big deal about the Word saturating all of our worship? Because “All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:6b, 8).Therefore let us prepare to give our undivided attention to the reading, hearing, and singing of God’s Word!

Morning Worship8:15 & 11:00 a.m.

• The order of worship for the evening service begins on page 7 of this booklet.• It is helpful for us to know who is worshipping on campus. If you haven’t registered to

attend, please visit 2pc.org now and use the buttons at the top of the homepage to let us know you’re here!

• To help everyone keep proper distance when exiting, please exit by row to the closest exterior Sanctuary door (back rows to the North doors; front rows to the South doors). Also, please keep masks on throughout the worship service and while on campus.

• A live stream of services is available at 2pc.org/live for those unable to attend at this time.• Please take this order of worship with you as you exit. Hint: You can bring it back for

worship this evening at 6:00!

Words: Isaac Watts / Music: John Hatton; arr. Metzger / Psalm 72:8

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more.To Him shall endless prayer be made, and praises throng to crown His head; His name, like sweet perfume, shall rise with ev’ry morning sacrifice.People and realms of ev’ry tongue dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on His name.Blessings abound where’er He reigns; the pris’ner leaps to lose his chains, The weary find eternal rest, and all the sons of want are blest.Let ev’ry creature rise and bring peculiar honors to our King; Angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud amen!

Trust Jesus, Our Only RedeemerCORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Most merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess that we are prone to evil and lazy in doing good. All our shortcomings and offenses are against You. You alone know how often we have sinned by wandering from Your ways, in wasting Your gifts, and in forgetting Your love. O Lord, have pity upon us. Teach us to hate our errors and cleanse us from our secret faults. Forgive all our sins on account of Your dear Son, our Savior. Send Your purifying grace into our hearts, that we may live in Your light and walk according to the commandments of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

I am a pilgrim of sorrow, I’m left in this wide world, this wide world alone! Oh, I ain’t got no hope, got no hope for tomorrow trying to make it, make Heaven my home.

Sometimes I’m tossed and I’m driven, Lord. Sometimes I just don’t know which way to turn. Oh, I heard of a city, of a city called heaven. I’m trying to make it, make Heaven my home.

Follow Jesus, the Light of MenWPRAYERS OF INTERCESSION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WHYMN OF PREPARATION: “Psalm 67: O God, Show Mercy to Us” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . THAXTED

Music: Gustav Holst / Psalm 67

O God, show mercy to us and bless us with Your grace; And cause to shine upon us the brightness of Your face, So that Your way most holy on earth may soon be known, And unto ev’ry people Your saving grace be shown. Let all the peoples praise You; let all the nations sing; In ev’ry land let praises and songs of gladness ring. For You will judge the peoples in truth and righteousness, And on the earth all nations will Your just rule confess. Let all the peoples praise You; let all the nations sing. Then earth in rich abundance to us its fruit will bring. The Lord our God will bless us; our God will blessing send, And all the earth will worship to its remotest end.

SCRIPTURE LESSON. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Exodus 34:1–14

The Lord said to Moses, “Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. No one shall come up with you, and let no one be seen throughout all the mountain. Let no flocks or herds graze opposite that mountain.” So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first. And he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand two tablets of stone. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. And he said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us, for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.” And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.

“Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a snare in your midst. You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and cut down their Asherim (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God).

CALL TO WORSHIPFor the protection of our community during the pandemic, singing along to hymns is discouraged.

WTHIS IS AMAZING GRACEWho breaks the power of sin and darkness; Whose love is mighty and so much stronger? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder; Who leaves us breathless in awe and wonder? The King of Glory, the King above all kings.

This is amazing grace; this is unfailing love; That You would take my place, that You would bear my cross. You laid down Your life that I would be set free! O, Jesus, I sing for all that You’ve done for me.

Who brings our chaos back into order; Who makes the orphan a son and daughter? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. Who rules the nations with truth and justice, Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance? The King of Glory, the King above all kings.Worthy is the Lamb who was slain; Worthy is the King who conquered the grave.

Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that

they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this:Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. The Liturgy of the Table

INVITATION TO THE TABLEThis is the Lord’s table. All who profess their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ are invited to receive communion. If this is not your faith, we would still encourage you to walk forward, knowing that no one will make you take the elements. Any of our elders or pastors will be happy to talk to you about questions or doubts you have about faith in Christ. We encourage children not to take communion until they have joined the church but do welcome them to come forward with their parents to receive a blessing. All communion wafers are gluten free.

WHEAL USHeal us, Emmanuel, here we are. We long to feel Thy touch. Deep wounded souls to Thee we fly. O Savior, hear our cry.

Our faith is feeble, we confess. We faintly trust Thy word. But will You pity us, the less? Be that far from You, Lord!Remember Him who once applied with trembling for relief.

“Lord, I believe,” with tears he cried. “O help my unbelief!”She, too, who touched You in the press and healing virtue stole, Was answered, “Daughter, go in peace. Thy faith has made thee whole.”Like her, with hopes and fears, we come to touch You, if we may. O send us not despairing home; send none unhealed away.

WALL I HAVE IS CHRIST

I once was lost in darkest night, yet thought I knew the way. The sin that promised joy and life had led me to the grave. I had no hope that You would own a rebel to Your will. And if You had not loved me first, I would refuse You still.

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life.

But as I ran my hell-bound race, indiff’rent to the cost You looked upon my helpless state and led me to the cross; And I beheld God’s love displayed, You suffered in my place, And bore the wrath reserved for me, now all I know is grace.

Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone and live so all might see The strength to follow Your commands could never come from me. O Father, use my ransomed life in any way You choose And let my song forever be: My only boast is You.
