Wholistic Mission Training TEARFUND PRE-CONFERENCE SESSION

Tearfund is working with local churches world-wide to equip them to bring restoration to those living in poverty in their communities. The interaction with churches and denominations indicates the importance of theological institutions in equipping pastors

CHURCH AND COMMUNIT Y

MOBILISATION PROCESS (CCMP)

TRAINING AT THEOLOGICAL

INSTITUTIONS IN AFRICA

and leaders theologically and practically in transforming their communities holistically. Tearfund has been working with a number of theological institutions in Africa to provide training in the church and community mobilisation process (CCMP). Tearfund reviewed CCMP training at a number of these institutions. We will discuss the review in this webinar.

An overview of the Church and Community Mobilisation Process (CCMP)- CCMP has been facilitated by Tearfund for more than 20 years in 23 countries in Africa.- An introductory booklet into CCMP in Africa can be downloaded from https://learn.tearfund.org/en/resources/tools-and-guides/ccmp-in-africa- CCMP helps the Church build relationships with the immediate community and work hand and hand to address common issues.- CCMP has five clear stages – Church awakening, Description, Information Gathering, Analysis and Decision Making- The Church is the beginning point - Church must “Awaken” first so as to “stir up” the community- The Church and community “walk” together to identify needs and resources available, and to improve the situation holistically

CCMP training at 7 theological institutions in Anglophone and Lusophone AfricaClear impact in a number of areas:- Community Development: On average, there is evidence of institutional involvement and participation in community development initiatives.- Community Driven Projects: In 6 out of the 7 institutions studied, there is some evidence of community people’s involvement in initiated projects. - Adaptive Programming: All the 7 institutions are adapting CCMP training to fit their local contexts.

- Capacity Building: 5 out of the 7 institutions studied are excelling in training facilitators, coaches and trainers as reflected by numerous workshops, seminars and conferences conducted at the institutions.- Holistic Transformation: Holistic transformation is indeed taking place, albeit, at different paces depending on whether all the six stages of CCMP training were taught.

Recommendation Theological Institutions should consider offering CCMP courses in a wide range of options i.e. as a short-term course, a full-time course but also as a co-streamed course at certificate, diploma and degree levels depending on the institutional curriculum framework and contextual needs

REFLEC TION QUESTIONS

1) What do you think about the concept of the church and community mobilisation process (CCMP)?2) How could CCMP be used in your church, denomination, organisation and theological institution?3) How could CCMP training be provided at theological institutions in Africa?4) What do you think about the recommendation that theological institutions in Africa should consider offering CCMP courses?5) How should the curriculum of theological institutions in Africa be adapted to accommodate CCMP training?

GMC AFRICA IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY

The Global Institute serves as catalyst for program innovation as to how to empower and capacitate the Church in the Global South to fulfill the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20), The Great Commandment (Matt. 22:36-40) and the Great Concern (Matt. 25:31-45) by unleashing the capacity of national/indigenous missional leaders and organizations through mutual earning and collaboration.

Driven by the emerging realities and challenges on the missional landscape in Africa and the Caribbean, some of the matters we address are: •Unleashing the capacity of Global South Christian leaders and organizations, beginning in Africa, to pursue wholistic impact in their communities and on to the ends of the earth.•Megaphoning the cause of mission and the growing importance of the role of Africa and the Global South church to fulfill the Great

Commission through respectful Global South and Global north partnerships •Tackling the remnants of paternalism and post colonialism that are still present in missiological conversations as well as the decolonialization of aid; •Establishing criteria for accrediting/certifying the many smaller but fruitful “fragile” national missions, especially in the Horn of Africa by building their capacity in 7 domains so they can also enter meaningful partnerships with global North partners to support their effective missionary work in difficult Christian minority settings: o Missional Health o Spiritual Health o Governance and leadership Health o Management Health o Programmatic Health o Resource mobilization and partnership Health o Financial Health
