Bible Study The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy
It will draw you closer to your heavenly bridegroom. If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the church is his bride, then the Prophets can be seen as “spiritual mar-riage counselors.” Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly bridegroom and show us how to share him with others.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 16, 2018
FOCUS: As the Christ, Jesus is the one that Israel has long waited for.
Scripture contains many important questions. Chief among them is the one Jesus asks today, Who do you
say that I am? How we answer that question goes to
the heart of our faith. Can we, like Peter, say You are
the Christ? And how deep is our commitment to this
confession of faith?
LITURGY OF THE WORD: Describing the Serv-ant of the Lord, Isaiah emphasizes his total trust in God, even in times of trial and persecution. Saint James emphasizes that our faith must always have a practical dimension to it. We can demonstrate what we truly believe only through our actions and deeds. Jesus chastises Peter for failing to understand the true purpose of his mission.
REFLECTION: Doing the right thing doesn’t guar-
antee we’ll succeed. It’s not about success, but about being faithful. But how can we be faithful when suffer-ing is the price we sometimes must pay for doing what is right? What will keep us from yielding and turning in another direction? Isaiah has a piece of wisdom and assurance for us today, "The Lord God is my help,
therefore I am not disgraced."
So we ask ourselves:
Have I ever suffered or been penalized for doing what was right?
What gave me the determination and strength to stay the course?
