Editorial

Loving the ‘pay what you like’ Letters to the Editor Special: Kulin Shire initiative a hit with ‘Grey Nomad Times’ readers A few weeks ago, an article about Kulin’s new ‘You Set the Price’ scheme for the Caravan Park appeared on the front page of the ‘Grey Nomad Times’, a fortnightly e-newsletter which gets sent out to over 12,000 subscribers. The Editor was so overwhelmed with emails praising the initiative that this week, the Grey Nomad Times published a two page special with all the letters. Download the edition here and check out pages 4 and 5! - http://www.thegreynomads.com.au/GreyNomadTimesIss104P.pdf

Silverleaf Nightshade Weed

(Solanum elaegnifolium)

Silverleaf nightshade is a summer growing

noxious weed that has caused problems for

many farmers over a long period. It was

introduced in the early 1900’s and is a

perennial that can dominate pastures and

cropping areas. It can reduce crop yields by

as much as 20- 40% by taking moisture and

nutrients over summer and autumn that

could otherwise be used by the following

crops. In pasture paddocks it can reduce

growth of productive species and render

areas useless for livestock grazing. It

reproduces from both seed and root

fragments so can be difficult to control by

conventional means. Many common farm

activities such as livestock movement and

cultivation will spread this weed. Laboratory

tests have shown that all parts of the plant

are toxic but stock are often reluctant to eat

the leaves but will often nibble the berries if

there is not other feed available.

Research has shown that a systematic “Dual

Action” approach over the growing season

from spring to autumn is needed. In many

cases residual herbicides may be required to be used in

conjunction with normal summer weed programs to give

effective control of silverleaf nightshade. For long term

control a competitive pasture or crop is needed to choke

out the weed and reduce the moisture and nutrients that

it can access.

An MLA funded project will utilise the Landcare networks,

private agronomists, farmer and weed groups to build

local knowledge and to foster the adoption of the

research by farm communities. Demonstration trials

carried out on local farms will compare current research

with the standard farmer practices. A series of workshops

and field days complimented by more publicity about the

weed is planned to raise awareness of the problem and to

get wider adoption of best practices.

A workshop will be conducted at Dumbleyung on the 30th

September 2015 hosted by Dumbleyung Landcare and

project officer Phil Bowden from NSW to show the latest

research and discuss best control options for SLN in the

local area. As it is not well established in many areas of

WA there is the opportunity to keep it out of many areas

before it causes economic damage, if farmers are familiar

with this weed.

For more information contact Phil Bowden (mob. 0427

201 946) or Claudia Hadlow from the local Dumbleyung

Landcare group ((mob. 0429 612 447)

Dementia-Friendly Communities

Creating a dementia-friendly nation A dementia-friendly community is a place where people living with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value. This Dementia Awareness Month, September 2015, we are highlighting the changes that people can make to work towards a dementia-friendly nation. They don’t have to be big changes, sometimes it is the small changes that make the biggest impact, it might be changes in the types of language that we use, talking to your staff about dementia, talking to your local MP about dementia, or keeping spaces clean and clear of clutter. Alzheimer’s Australia has developed a number of resources to assist all Australians to get a better understanding of what they can do to contribute to a dementia-friendly nation. Individuals: It starts with you. If we are going to create a dementia-friendly nation, it starts with the individuals who live there. Below are a few tips that can show you how you can A toolkit for members of the community who want to become dementia friendly A booklet with some examples that have been undertaken around Australia Is It Dementia (link is external) is a training resource to help you identify dementia in different settings Communities: Communities by their nature are designed to sharing and having certain attitudes and interests in common. It can be inexpensive for businesses and organisation's to

become dementia friendly. It can be as simple as

Tin Horse Highway Competition

Can you believe it is August again already? Horses

have all had another birthday- August 1- and it is

time to get those new ones completed for the 2015

competition.

Entries need to follow the guidelines on the

webpage as far a size and durability go- but the

design is totally up to your imagination.

There is also a great competition going which asks

for you submit your ideas if not able to actually

build the horse yourself- check out our facebook

page!! We already have a few amazing ideas to

hand.

This might also assist those who would like to build

a horse but can’t come up with an idea of their

own.

So no excuses …register your horse with Wendy

Gangell before end of August and horses will be

displayed trackside on race day for judging.

Tin Horse Highway Announcement

The Kulin Bush Races Committee are very excited to announce that the Lions Club of Kulin have agreed to take on the

maintenance of the wonderful Tin Horses that reside on the Tin Horse Highway. Our committee wish to extend a big

THANK YOU to the Lions Club for taking on this task.

The Tin Horse Highway is an incredibly important asset for Kulin and we cannot under estimate this. As a community,

we need to keep it looking amazing 12 months of the year. It is not just a feel good thing but provides a real economic

benefit to our town, our town’s brand and the promise we make to visitors who make effort to come and visit them.

The Tin Horse Highway is recognised as a ‘must see and do’ when travelling through the Wheatbelt. We spend so

much time and money on promoting it and creating the facilities to support it (like Discovery Zone , book, signage etc)

and whilst we are not sure how we put a dollar value on it, in terms of the amount of customers it brings through our

town for 12 months of the year but it is a lot!

You just have to look on the WikiCamps app (THE place to get info about where to stay and visit around Australia) too

see how popular it is. There are so many comments about the Tin Horse Highway and what an amazing town Kulin is.

There is no question that it is bringing thousands of people through our town each year and it is so incredibly important

that we look after it.

People are travelling vast distances to visit it, going out of their way, plus they are marking it on their map thousands of

kilometers in advance to them actually arriving. The last thing we want is people starting to say “Don’t bother going to

Kulin to see the THH - All the horses look great in the pics but in reality are all falling apart”.

THANK YOU LIONS CLUB

Kulin School Centenary

News

Contributed by Sharyn McAdam

With only 6 months to go our group have been

very busy keeping things on track for the

celebrations next year on Saturday 12th March

2016. The journey to date has been a really

amazing collaborative effort and we have

appreciated the support and sponsorship of

many groups. Recently our group did some

catering for the Kulin Kondinin Football Club

Grand Final dinner and we were overwhelmed

with the support via food donations and help.

We will be running the sausage sizzle at the

Kulin Markets on Saturday 28th November

2015.

If you are planning on coming to the centenary

next year you can pre-register now via email, online or in

person at the Kulin CRC. When you register you can also

place your order on our centenary memorabilia. For sale

we have Travel Mugs for $12, Tea Spoons for $10 and

Stubby Holders for $6. Stock is very limited. The first 500

people to register will receive a very special centenary gift

pack and enclosed in it will be some unique and

commemorative gifts for you.

If you have some Kulin School related photos and

memorabilia we’d love to use them in our display next

year, please feel free to get in touch with Tess at the

school or Sharyn. Our next meeting is going to be this

Friday 18th Sept at the Freebairn Centre at 6.30pm,

everyone is welcome and we’d love you to come along

and be involved. If you want to keep up to date then feel

free to join our group on face book ‘Kulin DHS 100 Year

Centenary Celebrations 2016’ or email our secretary

Sharyn McAdam [email protected] and receive

all updates and information directly!

Fitness Facts

It's Not That Hard to Find Time for Fitness.

The key, says Atkinson, is to use your time more wisely.

Think about killing two birds with one stone.

Take your kids to the park or ride bikes together, and

you're getting physical activity while enjoying family time,

he says. Beyond that, go for a hike, take the kids

swimming, or play hide-and-seek, tag, softball, or

horseshoes in the backyard.

At work, he says, schedule a meeting on the jogging track

or on the golf course.

Also, forget the idea that you have to trudge to the gym

and spend an hour or more doing a formal workout.

Instead, you can work short spurts of physical activity into

your day.

"Everyone has 20 minutes," Atkinson says. "Everyone has

10 minutes to jump rope, and sometimes that's better

than 20 minutes of walking or running."

Indeed, squeezing in two or three bouts of 15 or 20

minutes of activity is just as effective as doing it all at

once, says Astorino. Vacuuming the house in the morning,

riding bikes in the park with the kids in the afternoon,

then taking a brisk walk in the evening can add up to an

active day.

Recent U.S. government guidelines say that to lose weight

and keep it weight off, you should accumulate at least 60

minutes of exercise a day, says Astorino. But half an hour

a day is all you need to reap the health and disease-

fighting benefits of exercise.

Sports News Kulin Netball Club

Contributed by Tessa Silver KU3 started strong getting the first 2 goals on the board to set the game up which was close at every change. Going into the final quarter teams were a draw. With the teams going goal for goal until Kulins defence Deirdre managing to intercept and cause a turnover sending the ball down to our ever reliable shooters Amanda and Christie. With a very vocal home crowd KU3 won 22-19.

Well done to all team members and a special mention to

Deirdre who took out a well deserved Fairest and Best on
