WELCOME LETTER
Dear colleagues,
We are very pleased to welcome you at the ESPA conference 2019. We have designed an exciting program with excellent and well known international speakers. The theme of the conference fits perfectly with the modern architecture of the city of Rotterdam: New Horizons for Paediatric Anaesthesia. The conference is being in the modern conference centre DeDoelen in the heart of the city-centre Rotterdam next to the Central-Station. Rotterdam is easily connected to the rest of the world via Amsterdam-Schiphol-Airport. There is a high speed -train connection from Amsterdam-Schiphol-Airport to Rotterdam Central-Station which takes about 26 min and runs more than 4 times per hour.
For the first time, the conference will be preceded with three excellent intensive and hands-on workshops on: Advanced Airway Management, Advanced Haemodynamic Monitoring, and Paediatric Anaesthesia Safety Quality Improvement Program which will be organised in the ErasmusMC – Sophia Children´s Hospital on 18 September 2019 from 13:00 to 19:00.
Our Opening Session on Thursday 19 September 2019 will include Anneke Meursing former president of FEAPA, most recent president Francis Veyckemans tackling recent ESPA activities, and President-Elect Laszlo Vutskits on the Future of Paediatric Anaesthesia. Following this we have a session with Visiting European Speakers (Joe Brierley, Dick Tibboel and Erik Ramon Isern) who will be discussing aspects of perioperative and intensive care in cooperation with the European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care ESPNIC.
After the lunch-symposium break we will continue with concurrent sessions on Anaesthesia related to Trauma (Xavier Moors, Sol Soriano) or Cardiac Conditions (Dick Tibboel, Francis Veyckemans), followed by Quality Improvement (Dean Kurth, Paul Stricker and Elena Fernandez) or Pharmacology (paediatric intensivist and pharmacologist Saskia de Wildt, Karel Allegaert and Lonneke Staals).
On Friday morning we celebrate the second lustrum of ESPA with a morning run for charity! This will be a touristic run tour of about 6 km through the city guided by professional runtrainers.
The scientific program will continue with the keynote lecture of Prof. Dick Swaab on “Anesthesia during development: needs for research”. Prof Dick Swaab is nationally and internationally a well known and highly respected physician and neurobiologist.

The keynote lecture will be followed with session on Neuro-anaesthesia (Antonia Gonzales, Markus Klimek, Irene Mathijssen and Sol Soriano). After the lunch symposium, concurrent sessions will include the Best Abstract presentations and symposium on Education (Mathias Johansen, Mary Lane and Jonathan Smith). After the poster walk break, we have parallel sessions on Anaesthesia for Airway Surgery and the classical session Editors Picks with selection of best papers on Paediatric Anaesthesia (Andrew Davidson), PICU (Brian Anderson) and Pain (Suellen Waker).
On Saturday the main session will relate to Haemostasis (Andreas Machotta, Fany Bonhomme), followed by the always enlightening and interactive session entitled “My Worst Nightmare” which again will be led by Nigel Turner.
During the conference you are welcome to attend various (hands-on) workshops on: How to write and review a paper, Single Lung Ventilation, Sedation by the Paediatric Anaesthesiologist, Ultrasound for Loco regional Anaesthesia) in cooperation with DARA-ESRA), Big Data Analysis and Introduction in Quality Improvement. We are pleased to include both a range of international and European anaesthesiologists a well as specialists from other fields to ensure sessions cover a range of practical management tips and cutting -edge topics, as well as summarizing the evidence-base and scientific basis for current practice. The program has also been planned to provide additional time for viewing posters as we believe this will be of great benefit for both delegates and the poster presenters, as well as additional time to visit the trade display and network with colleagues.
The Social Program will include the Welcome Reception on Thursday evening, and the Conference Dinner held on Friday evening on the memorable Cruise boat SS Rotterdam. This Grande Dame is a former ocean liner and cruise ship built in 1958 for immigrants from the Netherlands to travel across the Atlantic to the USA. It was completely restored in 2008 into its original luxurious style and now serves as a combination museum/hotel.
We are looking forward to welcome you in Rotterdam!

POSTERS
Posters will be displayed during the whole meeting. Posters will be organized in one of two rooms (Zaal 3 and Zaal 4) according to numbers (Zaal 3: P-01 to P-44; Zaal 4: P-45 to P-89).
Posters should be set up in the Poster Area from 8:00 on Thursday, September 19, 2019 and must be removed by 14:30 on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the latest. Any posters remaining in the Poster Area after this time will be discarded.

GENERAL INFORMATION
How to travel to RotterdamBest way to travel to Rotterdam is via Schiphol Airport and thereafter take the high speed train to Rotterdam (intercity direct) in 25 min which runs every 15 min. The taxi will be 1 hour (or longer) and cost 200 EUR whereas the train is 25 min and costs 13 EUR.
LanguagesDutch. Many Dutch people speak English as well.
CurrencyEuro (€)
MoneyYou can exchange cash at Banks, post offices and GWK exchange offices. Also, many hotels have an option that visitors can change cash there. There are many ATM machines throughout Rotterdam. Credit cards including Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in Rotterdam but American Express card is less accepted than these two. By credit card you can pay restaurant bills, hotel bills and in department stores. In smaller shops, paying by credit card is less common.
TippingTipping is not expected in the Netherlands. Many services include the service charge added to the bill. In restaurants, bars and cafés, leaving extra charge is common. If the service in restaurant was good or exceptional, around 5-10% tipping is expected. The best option is to give the tip directly to the service person. In café or bar, it is suitable to leave small change or round-up the bill. In hotels, there is often a 15% service charge already added to the hotel bill. If you want to tip your porter you should tip 1 or 2 Euros per bag.
Time ZoneThe Netherlands is in the Central European Time Zone. Central European Standard Time (CET) is 1 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1). Like most states in Europe, Summer (Daylight-Saving) Time is observed in the Netherlands, where the time is shifted forward by 1 hour; 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2). In the year 2019 the Daylight Saving Time starts on 31st March and ends on 27th October.

Telephone CodesIf you want to call out from the Netherlands, you need to use IDD code (International Direct Dialing) or ISD code (International Subscriber Dialing) which is 00 for the Netherlands. Country code is needed when you need to dial in to the country. Unique dialing code for the Netherlands is 31. If you want to call to Rotterdam, it has it´s own area code 10. So the dialing code for Rotterdam is +31 – 10. To provide an example, from outside the Netherlands, a caller would dial their international call prefix (typically 00 in Europe and 011 in North America), followed by 31 (the country code for the Netherlands), then the area code, which is 10 for Rotterdam.
ShoppingRotterdam is the best shopping area in the Netherlands. There are many major department shops, fashion stores as well as specialized shops. Most shops are located in down town Rotterdam. Except this, there are two huge shopping malls outside the city centre – Zuidplein mall and Alexandrium mall. Shops in Rotterdam are opened 7 days a week. Well-known shopping streets in Rotterdam are Lijnbaan, Koopgoot, Hoogstraat and Meent as well as the exclusive shopping street Van Oldenbarneveltstraat.
VAX (Tax)Value added tax of 21% is added on to the price of all consumer goods and services. If you live outside the European Union and make a purchase in the Netherlands, in many cases you are entitled to a VAT refund. The conditions include that the item purchased is for personal use, not used and in cabin baggage, transported to your own country within three months from the purchase. The minimum amount specified on the invoice is 50 EUR in the Netherlands.
SafetyRotterdam is like any other big city and basic common sense rules apply. To avoid theft it is good to not carry money or bis sums of money, bank/credit cards and your passport in the same bag or pocket. Making a photocopy of your passport and itinerary is also a good practice.
Emergency ServicesIn case of emergency, there is general emergency number 112 for fire, police and ambulance. In case of an emergency you can contact Fire service and Medical service by dialling 100 and Police service by 101. The number 112 can be dialled to reach all emergency services – medical, fire and police – from anywhere in Europe.
