The Youth Centre has been the target of repeated vandalisms, which has hin-dered the progress the Youth Club of Strathmore has been trying to make since signing a lease agreement with the town in June.

“We’ve been working with the town try-ing to come up with a game plan. It’s re-ally a matter of what do we need to have happen and that kind of thing. The town council has been phenomenal,” said Ryan Tongs, Chair at Youth Club of Strathmore.

“Are we discouraged? Not for the pro-gramming, for the building, yeah it’s a little frustrating. We’re trying to do some-thing good for the community. Somebody is trying to fight us, and we don’t know who it is. My big thing is this, if they don’t like what we’re doing come and talk to us and let’s figure it out.”

The Youth Club is trying to offer pro-grams for kids aged 6 to 18, which they will do with or without the building.

“From a safety perspective we’re not going to use the building, but we’re not stopping,” said Tongs.

“The building has become a distraction to programming, so we’re moving for-ward with programming, and the build-ing will come to pass when we get it to come to pass.

“We’re definitely at a point now where the building is not a priority for us, the programming is, as much as we can offer. We’re going to focus there and then work with the town to come up with some long term opportunities with the building.”

He is confident the organization will be successful with or without the building, but said they are a little more restricted by what all can be offered without the building.

The Youth Club of Strathmore building has been a continuous target of vandalism, something which has become frustrating to those trying to repair and re-open the building. Spray painted obsceni-ties and sentences such as, ‘this won’t stop’ and ‘big mistake’ can be seen all around the building.

“So we’re going to work under those guidelines as far as volunteering, pro-gramming…as if we are a Boys and Girls Club because they have the standards and expectations that have proven successful in numerous com-munities. That’s how we’re going to function, we’re not just going to make up our own rules. If it’s not something they would do, we’re not going to do it.”

One thing Tongs is fairly certain of is, it isn’t the kids using the skate-board park. He said they are generally a good group of kids who are very receptive, and the issues are coming from the kids who have nowhere to go and nothing to do.

“We are going to do everything in our power to stop this vandalism. I suspect that it’s probably youth that are a little older, that know better and that their parents should take some re-

sponsibility of this and find out them-selves how this is happening, or why it’s happening,” said Mayor Steve Gra-jczyk.

“They should be penalized, if not punished severely, because it’s costing everybody money, tax dollar money and that’s why therefore the parents should take some responsibility.”

The town has been in contact with the RCMP, and plans to do as much as they can to prevent future vandalism by putting up some cameras or maybe even fences. Grajczyk said maybe if a chain link fence was placed around the whole building, with only certain hours to get into it, then maybe the culprits would realize it’s serious busi-ness. Tongs is available to speak to anyone who has a problem with the building or his organizations and he encourages people to contact him at [email protected].

Fall of 2001 was the first time Sa-cred Heart Academy, SHA, had opened their doors, and when they opened earlier this week it marked the 10th year students have filled the hallways. The staff and parents have a number of things planned this year to com-memorate the landmark, one of which is a big birthday celebration.

The birthday will be Oct. 14 after ev-eryone has had a chance to settle into the new school year.

“It’s just a day full of fun. We’re go-ing to have a candy corn and pop-corn machine, we’re going to have carnival games set up, we’re going to

feed everybody. We’re going to have cupcakes, and just a big birthday cel-ebration,” said Kilee Dovichak, parents council chair.

Some of the kids will still have to catch the bus home, so the morning will be about feeding the kids, having cake and doing a blessing, though ev-erything will run into the afternoon.

The same day as the party, Rita Sweere will be making a presentation about the school. Sweere who was one of SHA’s strong supporters, has also kept a scrapbook of everything the school has done since its inception.

Another thing the school will be do-ing is having each classroom host a tea for one of the founders and original supporters of the school. They also

want to have someone come in every day, whether it’s parents, grandpar-ents, or high school students, and read to the students.

A mosaic is in the works, a picture has been designed to put on a canvas and each student in the school will help paint the picture that will later be displayed in the hallway.

“Something we are going to look at is school council will purchase some sort of commemorative gift for the school and that will either look at possibly in our field doing something to represent the stations of the cross or to beautify our school sign,” said Dovichak.

“Hopefully the details of that will come this year and get something in place for next year.”

A&W restaurants from all over took part in the annual MS (multiple scle-rosis) Day, which took place Aug. 25. In Strathmore there was a kid’s car-nival, a Baby Burger-eating contest, a car and bike show, celebrity appear-ances and a root beer shop contest.

“It went really well. We had lots of kids at the kid’s carnival, we’re esti-mating between 50 and 75, which the year before we only had about 10, so it’s gone up. The kids really loved it, they were having fun with the games,” said Kristel Lang, an employee with A&W and one of the organizers.

For the last few months the Strath-more location has been working on meeting their goal of $5,000 for char-ity. They held a garage sale and car wash Aug. 20, and have done fund-raising in store, through silent auction and other initiatives. For every teen burger sold on Aug. 25, $1 went to MS. The Strathmore A&W sold 521 teen burgers.

“We raised $7,339.75. We were the number one store for Canalta in Al-berta,” said Lang.

“Over half of the staff are teenag-ers, and they got out and did bottle drives, and penny drives, and they ran the garage sale and car wash. It was the teenagers that work here that did

it all, they were really good.”There is still a painting waiting to

be bid on, which was collected as a silent auction item. Lang thinks no one had bid on it due to it coming in late. Even though this years MS day just ended, Lang and the staff already have a goal set for next year.

“We’re going to soon start our Mil-lion Pennies for MS for 2012. We’re go-ing to try to collect a million pennies between now and next year. Which is equal to $10,000. We’re setting our goal for $10,000 next year,” said Lang.

There will be coin collection con-tainers set up for the pennies, and as they are filled, there is a sealed barrel that they will be put into.

MS Day a bigger success than expected

A&W held their annual Cruise for a Cause this past Thursday. The day was dedicated to mS awareness and consisted of lots of fun at a kiddie carnival followed by fun for the adults in a burger-eating contest and a root beer shooter contest. Fifteen-year-old marcus won the burger eating contest by eating 12 baby burgers in fifteen min-utes. The cruise night was one of the best turn-outs they have had all summer and all proceeds went to help find a cure for mS. For each teen burger that was sold $1 was donated to the fund.

Earlier this year Bevan Daverne was appointed the new Superintendent of Schools and Chief Executive Officer for the Golden Hills School Division, GHSD. While still somewhat new to this particular role, Daverne is not new to the division.

“I’ve worked in Golden Hills, and the old Three Hills School Division for 18 years. My last role here was as division principal, and as part of my job as division principal I was in charge of technology services for the district,” said Daverne.

He has also worked with all of GHSD colony schools, with the vir-tual school and with the international program. He said GHSD has a kind of reputation, and history of doing ex-cellent things for students. Daverne is excited about being involved with that in different ways, which is partly why he put his name in for the role of su-perintendant.

The new school year has begun and Daverne credits his co-workers, and having good people to work with, for making the learning curve a little easier.

“We have a very good group, and so any anxiety I might have over a new role and the challenges in that

position…I’m always reminding my-self that in some ways nothing has changed, because I still have such a good group of people to work with,” said Daverne.

“That makes coming up with solu-tions and working through challenges and difficult problems much easier

when you have a good group of people you’re working with.”

Daverne holds a Bachelor of Arts degree as a history major, a Bachelor of Educa-tion degree with a science and social sciences spe-cialization, and a Masters of Education degree with a leadership focus. He is com-

mitted to moving the division forward by creating enhanced educational op-portunities for the students.

“I think we have some really good momentum within our AC initia-tive, and our focus on assessment for learning, and outcome space assess-ment in the classroom level. So we’re going to continue that work…we’re seeing some really good results from the beginning that we had there, so we’re looking forward to that,” said Daverne.

He said with the situation of enroll-ment in Hussar and some of the small-er communities GHSD will continue to look for a solution, which works for the community.

Having a summer BBQ?Rule #1 – Don’t poison the

guests! Make sure that your food is fresh and properly prepared. Do take the dishes that can spoil off the table and put them back in the fridge for later.

You are responsible for the health and safety of your guests. This extends from the moment they step onto your property to getting home safely.

If you are going to have a fire then here are a few tips to help keep you out of court:

· Screen the fire pit· Consider where you put

the lawn furniture around the pit

· Be careful mixing liquor and fire. Keep an eye on your buddy who is wobbling by.

· Be alert when small

· Have an adequate source of water nearby for thoroughly dousing the fire when done.

A new healthy initiative is coming to Strathmore, one designed to bring the family closer together while being healthy. The Sobeys 21 Days to Healthy Eating Challenge begins on Sept. 6 and will go until Sept. 26. The main focus of the challenge is to have families eat at least one healthy meal together for 21 consecutive days, which, accord-ing to experts, is the amount of time it takes to change behaviour.

“I’m going to have a bunch of these calendars, they’re called Healthy Eat-ing challenge, the Family Log Book,” said Robert Breitwieser, with Strath-more’s Healthy Eating, Active Living, HEAL, coalition.

“It’s a big calendar, and log book with all kinds of information in it for healthy eating suggestions, and how families can kind of spend some time together at the table.”

He has dropped off 50 copies of the calendars and logbooks at Sobeys, and will be taking another 50 with him to REVS. If 100 Strathmore fam-ilies signed up and took part in the challenge, Breitwieser would feel they have reached their goal. The challenge is province-wide and is in conjunc-

tion with Sobeys, the Alberta govern-ment, Healthy You, ChooseWell, and in Strathmore with HEAL.

“It has all kinds of interesting stuff in it. It has different things like healthy food choices, vegetables, fruits, grain products, milk alternatives, meat alter-natives,” said Breitwieser.

“It’s got all kinds of tips to bring your family back together at the table, it’s got different things like barriers to eating breakfast, barriers to eating to-gether. It’s got a calendar where you actually check off the number of meals you’ve eaten together with you family, and the family can be two people or more.”

Experts suggest that eating healthy meals together can increase overall wellbeing, while improving communi-cation between families and numerous other benefits.

By registering for the challenge fam-ilies can also be entered into a draw to win one of 12 prizes totaling $5,500. Strathmore can also be entered in for a chance to win a $2,500 grant for the community.

Head to Sobeys between now and Sept. 6 to pick up your calendar and log book. More information can be found on the website at www.arpaon-line.ca/choosewell/events.

Road safety for our kids

It’s that time of year again when the streets are filled with kids; so during those crucial hours before and after school, pay attention to the road. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through residential areas and to adhere to speed limits in school and playground zones.

To keep children safe, motorists should:

• Scan farther down the road and obey posted speed limits. Always be prepared to slow down or stop.

• Avoid loud music and other distractions when driving.

• Pay attention to road and surroundings -Distracted Driving law in effect September 1st - $172 fine

• Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks. Parked or stopped vehicles may hide a pedestrian who is crossing the road. The fine is $575 and four demerit points for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk or passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk to permit a pedestrian to cross.

• Watch for the school safety patrol in their orange vests and stop as directed. Patrollers play a vital role in directing children safely across the street.

• Be very cautious in parking lots or when backing out of a parking stall or driveway.

• Watch for kids between parked vehicles and on the sidewalk. They may dash out into the street after a friend or a toy.

• Adhere to school and playground zone speed limits in your community.

Parents and/or guardians should use the crosswalks with their children to act as an example, as one day these children will be on their own.

From the office ofKevin SorenSon

Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is warn-ing constituents that NDP Deputy Leader Libby Davies, MP’s Motion M-141 amounts to the same thing as former Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla’s Bill C-428 that caused considerable concern in the 40th Parlia-ment.

Sorenson says, “Eliminating the 10-year residency requirement for Canadian citizens to qualify for Old Age Security benefits would cost Canadian taxpay-ers a billion dollars annually and give expensive taxpayer funded benefits to those who may have never paid any taxes in Canada and do not deserve them.”

The Liberals and NDP apparently want OAS to be paid out to new residents within a few years. This would mean that someone who only recently ar-rived in Canada would receive Old Age Security and a Guaranteed Income Supplement, just like some-one who has worked hard for 10 years or more, paid taxes, and contributed to Canadian society.

“My constituents, and I believe a majority of Cana-dians, are angered to see the return of this attempt to ‘grab’ hard-earned tax dollars. Human Resources Minister Diane Finley ‘crunched’ the numbers on this proposal years ago and concluded that Cana-dians can’t afford it. But Bob Rae, MP endorses it – and so do his former NDP colleagues as the Official Opposition,” Sorenson continues.

“In a poll on my website; a survey in my House-holder; and on the campaign trail, constituents young and old told me that you have to earn the Old Age Security benefit – and it takes years of hard work. M-141 insults Canadians’ deeply in-grained sense of fairness and fiscal responsibility. This continues to be a ‘crass’ attempt to get votes from new Canadians – but it will continue to back-fire as an insult to Canadian Senior Citizens who have worked hard building Canada over the course of their productive lives. The NDP, like the Liberals before them have no respect for the hard work re-quired to qualify for Canada’s Old Age Security ben-efit. Our Conservative majority in Parliament will prevent passage of M-141,” Sorenson concludes.

MP warns about NDP motion to extend OAS benefits

Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs, Jonathan Denis and Mayor Steve Grajczyk, will be joined by Nancy Kameneski of Genworth Financial Canada and Kelly Wagar from Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation as Classic Communities hosts a Rib-bon Cutting Ceremony at Bayside Villas, Strath-more’s first Perpetually Affordable Housing venture on Sept. 6, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This year something new and exciting is happening five km east of town. There will be a fundraiser for the Strathmore Food Bank. A family has decided that they wanted to give back to the community, so they - with the support of local businesses - have put together the first an-nual Watermelon Crawl and Fill The Postal Van for the Food Bank event.

This event is jam-packed with things to do for two days and even a dance.

This is the time of the year that the food bank needs donations the most. The goal of this fund-raiser is to fill the back of the postal van with food for the food bank. Cash donations will be ac-cepted too.

Organizers have worked around the clock to make this a huge success. The event will start at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 and go till 3 p.m. Sunday.

Now, to the fun part, the events! The schedule is subject to change, but here is an idea of what’s going to happen the Sat-urday and Sunday:

Saturday at noon will be reg-istration. At 2:30 p.m. will be a dance contest for the kids with prizes. At 3 p.m. there will be a name that tune, and 3:30 p.m. will be a line dance. At 4 p.m. will be time to bring your items for the potluck supper over to set them up. The burgers are sold for a food donation and the fire department is providing the BBQ.

At 6 p.m. there is a dance contest for all ages, as well as a raffle, and at 7 p.m. another line dance. At 8 p.m. there is an air guitar contest and two more line dances. At 9 p.m. there will be a 50/50 Draw and raffle. And at 10 p.m the dance starts and goes till 1 a.m. The music is supplied by All Genres DJ Service.

On Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon there will be a continental breakfast. And 1 p.m. there is a

dance contest for kid followed by a raffle. At 2 p.m. there is a dance contest for all ages. The huge prize of tickets to the 2012 Heritage Days Rodeo will be given away, a 50/50 Draw and much more.

At 3 p.m. it will be time to say your goodbyes and see you next year!

Over the two days there will be karaoke all day and sing with the back as well as face paint-ing for the kids, dancing all day, raffles all day. This event is for a good cause so bring a can of soup and enjoy the fun.

This will be a lot of fun and benefit many people that use the food bank. There is day parking and camping for both RV’s and tents. The cost of camping is $10 and you must call ahead to re-serve.

Call and talk to any of the or-ganizers at 403-901-1449. If you are a local business that would like to help, feel free to call 403-901-1449 and see what you can do.

After the success of last year’s fundraising steak-and-lobster night at Holy Cross Collegiate, HHC, organizers have decided to host the event again.

“This year we’ve tried to get more people involved. We’re going to be selling tickets at Sobeys from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting on Tuesday (Aug. 30) up until the event,” said Laurie Bratt, organizer.

A steak or lobster plate is be-ing sold for $35 a plate, and there will be salad, baked pota-toes, buns and cake to go with it. For only $45 people can get a plate with both.

There will be a cakewalk, and other games for the kids. Two volleyball nets will be set up

outside with a mini volleyball tournament taking place. Bratt said they are also thinking about having a floor hockey tourna-ment outside weather permit-ting, and if the weather isn’t co-operating then they will have it inside. Bratt said it has not been fully determined yet if the floor hockey will take place.

The Catholic Women’s League, CWL, will be showcasing their best pie recipe as a part of the pie-baking contest

“Last year I think we had 12 pies entered. It’s just something to get the whole community to-gether, and it’s pie season so we thought we would do that. We have our judges, and they pick who the winner is,” said Bratt.

This year there are different seating times available for those who want to enjoy dinner. The

times are 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

It helps give the people run-ning the BBQ an idea how many steaks they have to have ready for a certain time. Students will also be instrumental in making sure the evening runs smoothly.

“They will be making the salad and washing the potatoes and the Knights of Columbus will do the grilling and the kids will be running the food, like buffet-style, and they will be do-ing the set-up and the clean-up,” said Bratt.

The school band will be play-ing and she said the committee plans to ask Kirstyn Johnson to play a couple of numbers too. The dinner takes place on Sept. 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the HCC field. All proceeds will go to HCC athletics department.

A new history book is in the works for the Town of Strathmore and the call is out to all residents to help come up with a name.

“It’s kind of a neat concept that got thrown around during a conversa-tion I was having with the author,” said Bob Sobol, town councillor and member of the centennial committee.

“We’ve basically given the author pretty wide berth in regards to where he can go with this thing, and (we) certainly have no objections to him coming up with a name for the book and rightfully so.”

Sobol said it was the author, Paul Sonsteby’s idea to ask the public what they would think about a title for the book, which is how the histo-ry book-naming contest came about.

Sobol approached the centennial committee to see if they would be interested in taking it on. Sobol said members of the committee were ea-ger to do it, and almost immediate-ly began coming up with ideas on how to put the process together that would see people submitting sugges-tions.

“We have put the ballots in the newspapers and of course there’s some available at the town office if anybody wants to stop by there and grab that,” said Sobol.

“Basically it’s anyone from the gen-eral public that can do it, that can submit names. Council and members of the committee are not allowed to, but anyone else is.”

The ballot box is located at the town office. There are three judges who are all members of the centen-nial committee, and none of whom are members of council.

“We’re fairly excited about it be-cause we were having some trouble ourselves. We were trying to think an appropriate name and we want something different, something that will hopefully encompass not only Strathmore’s past, but Strathmore’s future,” said Sobol.

“That’s what we’re hoping for. That’s what this book is all about, it’s a book about recognizing your past but putting a little bit of hope for the future in, and that’s basically what the end of the book is in regards to the celebrations 2011. We’ve come a long way and we’re going to go a long way.”

The contest closes on Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m. and all entries must be sub-mitted on an official ballot before being put into the ballot box at the town office. The person who submits the winning name will be given two tickets to the gala on Oct. 15, and will be recognized in the history book as having picked the successful name.

Take a chance at being a part of history

Have you ever wondered why two people from almost identical beginnings can end up so different later in life? Both of them raised in a good family with decent schooling and opportunities. Both of them intelligent people who understand the fundamentals of investing and wealth.Yet one of them goes on to create millions of dollars in net worth by the time they are 45... while the other continues to struggle with money every single payday. Why is that? My name is Darren Weeks and I am fortunate to have created a substantial amount of wealth for myself and my clients. I certainly wasn’t raised with a silver spoon in my mouth. I had a humble beginning, but I discovered some very important lessons early on that helped me become a multi-millionaire by the time I was 35 yrs old. I was born and raised in Edmonton, earned a University degree and learned it doesn’t make you wealthy. You need to study money in order to become rich. Come to this FREE event and learn two things: how to save taxes and get better returns on your investments. My company, The Fast Track Group was just ranked 40th Fastest Growing Company in Canada by Profit Magazine for 2011. In 9 years I have taken it from 5 employees to over 100. I have helped 50,500 Canadians save $898 MILLION in taxes alone in the past 9 years. Those who I helped also donated $1.6 billion to charity in this same time.My greatest pride in all of this? Seeing my clients, students and peers succeeding and thriving in the current economy.

A true story of 3 unlikely underdogs

who mastered the money game. They each came to me at different times for unique needs in creating, growing and protecting their money. The Principle: Rick Seutter grew up a hard working boy on a dairy farm. Rather than dreaming of his son taking over the farm, Rick’s dad encouraged him to go to school and aim for a good solid career. Being a good son, Rick did just that. He finished high school, went on to get his Bachelors degree, and become a school teacher. The perfect ‘secure’ career as many would like to think. Rick spent 22 years in the education system as a high

school teacher and then as a principle. As the years got on, Rick started to see the cracks in the traditional school => career => retirement plan that everyone was so convinced on.

Note one thing about the education system...

...the lack of focus on money, investing, leverage and business.

...Which explains why Rick soon became so frustrated with this ultimate lifestyle his father told him to pursue. The pension plan offered to teachers and principals was hardly enough to live a life of relative freedom.

Rick started reading about the Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad philosophy and ultimately discovered my events in Canada. One thing led to another and Rick ended up investing in real estate and starting a few businesses on the side while maintaining his job as a principle. Now Rick and his wife operate a very successful real estate investing company and Rick has entered into an agreement with the Fast Track Group to share his own strategies and formulas for getting rich in uncertain economies. As Rick says: “I am just an Average Everyday Canadian who educated myself on the right kind of money mindset that creates financial independence, and took massive action to make it a reality. I am VERY concerned about all the people who will be at retirement age in the next

10 years, yet have nothing saved for their retirement. Learning about money from those who have made lots of it was the greatest investment I ever made in myself... and it’s now my turn to pass that knowledge and experience on.”The Welder: Rob Chaulk came to one of my events in the Spring of 2008. He grew up in a family with a poor dad, and a rich dad (his uncle). So Rob had been given a good start on his money education. But it wasn’t enough. Rob Chaulk was a blue collar worker that knew his job wasn’t going to make life any easier. He held careers as an Ironworker, a welder, a heavy equipment operator and a crane operator. He dabbled in some businesses along the way in the restaurant and towing business. When Rob read the Rich Dad book, he took it serious and within 30 days he bought his first rental property. He was hooked. He put together a plan for 10 properties in 10 years... his key to retirement. Right around this same time he had lunch with his rich dad (his multi-millionaire uncle). Not exactly an easy guy to talk to, his uncle “Frank” was self-made and not easy to approach about money. But Rob did approach him - and Frank told him how stupid he was being and how little he still understood about money and leverage.

Frank then went on and shared with Rob one of the greatest lessons he

had ever learned.Money is ALL about leverage. When your money makes more money for you than your job does... then you are well on your way to financial freedom. If you make $20 an hour at your job - true financial independence begins when the money you invest is making you $25 an hour, without you having to do anything more. Frank showed him how to turn his rental property into 10 properties in just 12 months. Rob then came to a Get Rich event, hosted by myself... and was able to create a $4 million dollar property portfolio in just 24 months. As Rob says “Money is just the scorecard. When you understand the rules of the game - and how the game works - the money will find you!”While he was building his portfolio of properties, Rob also took his health very seriously. Rob was overweight, had

high blood pressure, sleep apnea and was sluggish every waking hour. After dropping over 100 pounds, Rob found a new lifestyle that had been long lost, and a money mindset that continues to help him and his family with all of the retirement and dreams. The Protege: Sam Ammar grew up in a very unusual family and location. Sam’s dad moved to Canada speaking very little English, a grade 8 education, and just a few dollars saved to start his new life. Sam’s father ended up starting a

janitorial business, which then opened the doors to investing in a hotel, which his mother helped run. They were quick to leverage the janitorial business and hotel into a portfolio of businesses that now includes a Laundromat, a liquor store, a fencing company, commercial real estate investments, and a number of residential real estate companies. One of Sam’s interests was the real estate side and Sam was able to take their 2 residential properties and quickly leverage them into 18 properties. The real estate business grew quickly thanks to The Fast Track Group. Today, Sam continues to help run the family businesses, as well as his own rapidly growing portfolio of investments and businesses. Sam quickly learned that his upbringing

and non-reliance on a career-based paycheque was the only way to create true financial independence. “Learn about money and leverage, and you will never again worry about your future, your freedom, or your independence. Anyone scared of their financial future NEEDS to understand the proper mindset of those who have created real wealth in the current economy.”Is it your turn to master the money mindset?I am proud to share that my system has worked for everyone who aggressively applied it. You could be the one with a large real estate portfolio and a business or two that runs without you.

...Most people are broke, and will stay that way for the rest

of their life. My company has organized an event coming up in your city and I would like you to join us. Commitment needs follow through and my team is here to make sure you get the tools you need for creating the independence you crave.Which of these would you like to put a permanent end to?• Worrying about how you will EVER get ahead when the government continues to take what you make. • The fear that your children will not have solid opportunities to create wealth, as the present generations seem to be wasting it all away.• The jealousy you feel when someone else ends up doing exceptionally well financially, knowing FULL WELL you are as smart, or smarter, than they are.• Arguing with your spouse about money and the challenges that come with growing and protecting it.• Constantly fretting over the fine balance of saving, investing and playing with your money.• Dreaming about that long vacation you have always wanted and needed, yet knowing it may never happen at the rate you are going now.Give us 3 hours of your time and we’ll give you powerful strategies that are guaranteed to change your life.Find out how to get out of bad debt

Local lion receives prestigious awardManny EvErEttTimes Contributor

The Standard Lions Club proudly nominated Al McKinnon to receive a Melvin Jones Fellowship award. The fellowship is awarded for exemplary service to the club and community.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship is named after the founder of Lions Club International. It is largely due to the growth of the fellowship program that LCIF has been able to meet humanitar-ian needs in communities around the world.

Fellowship contributions help to bring medication to prevent river blindness to people like 67-year-old Hilario and her family, or teach chil-dren like 12-year-old Stefan to avoid drugs through Lions Quest. Each Mel-vin Jones Fellowship contribution can restore the sight of 167 individuals or provide Lions Quest to 67 youth. LCIF is able to continue and expand pro-grams through the generous support of fellows such as McKinnon.

Al McKinnon has been a member of both Rosebud and Standard Lions Clubs. He served as President of both clubs and has also served many terms in other executive positions. Lion Al is one of the thoughtful leaders of dis-cussion at club meetings in Standard and his opinions are carefully consid-ered and well respected.

A devoted family many, in partner-ship with his wife Rita raised a fine family and is now at least once, a great-grandfather.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship repre-sents the dedication of McKinnon to humanitarian service of the highest degree.

Craig Koch and his fiancé Joyce Rossiter were all smiles as they welcomed everyone to the ninth annual charity golf tournament for Families of Spinal muscular Atrophy on Aug. 20.

Shannon LeClair Photo

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

The ninth annual charity golf tour-nament for Families of Spinal Mus-cular Atrophy, FSMA, Canada took place Aug. 20 at the Strathmore Golf Course. SMA is degenerative neuro-muscular disease, which can result in muscular atrophy and weakness.

There are three types of SMA in children and an adult version, type 4.

Strathmore resident Craig Koch started the tournament to raise mon-ey for a cure after his daughter Cas-sidy was diagnosed at three-years-old.

“Fifty per cent that are diagnosed as infants with SMA type 1 will die before they’re two years old because the disease basically fully paralyzes everything, including their breath-ing,” said Koch.

“Type 2 kids never walk and are usually in motorized wheelchairs, and I believe the mortality rate is 40 per cent or something along that line before they are teens.

“Then type 3, which Cassidy has, is the most variable version of the disease. She can’t run, or climb stairs very good or jump or anything like that but, her diagnosis since she was three was that worst-case scenario, she could be in a wheelchair, best-case scenario she’ll have a relatively normal life.”

Cassidy is now 12 and still gets around on her own power, and though she does have some trouble with uneven ground and stairs, she

is able to swim, and bike and par-take is some of the things children her age love to do. There is still a chance, though, that some day things could become worse for her.

One in every 40 people carry the gene that causes SMA, and the gene must be present in both parents in order for a child to be at risk of be-ing born with the disease. It is the leading genetic killer of children un-der the age of two. To date there isn’t an approved therapy for the treat-ment of SMA, which affects one in every six thousand children.

In May of this year the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, in the U.S. approved the clinical trial of a drug which will treat the disease, which Koch said brings hope to the families of SMA.

Next year will mark the tenth an-nual golf tournament, and Koch said it would also be the last.

“Ten years is a long time to run the event and it’s just time to move on to other things,” said Koch.

“I’ll still be involved obviously with SMA, but it’s a big commit-ment for everybody…after 10 years I think a lot of tournaments kind of run their life cycle you might say, un-less they’re really corporate run or something of that nature. When it’s a smaller, community run tournament like this one, or many others, it’s just time for me to say thank you to everybody and to move onto other things with SMA.”

To date the tournament has raised over $100,000 for SMA research.

At 1:40 a.m. on March 22 a fire raged through a home at the corner of Briar-wood Road and Briarwood Crescent in Strathmore. Four neighbouring homes were evacuated for the safety of the occupants due to the severity of the fire and wind direction. The occupants of the residence where the fire started were not home at the time. A second residence next to the first, was dam-aged by the fire.

All three of Strathmore’s football teams have been busy practicing five nights a week to prepare for this years season, which starts next week for some.

While all are excited to battle on the gridiron, the peewee team is like-ly looking forward to their first game the most. The team will be facing Inn-isfail at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Sept. 10.

“It’s all they can talk about. I’m hav-ing a hard time getting the focus on playing football, rather than just play-ing football at McMahon Stadium,” said coach Doug Klauck.

“We’re playing Innisfail and they initiated it. They looked it into it, and we’re able to rent the field for the day, for the three hours, and we’re split-ting the cost on it. Just something a little different, something special for the kids.”

Klauck said when he coached the Atom division in Calgary, every Atom team had a chance to play at McMa-hon. He said for this team to be able to play there as peewee is special for the kids.

While it can be hard to believe for those who have been to McMahon and seen the field, it is a regulation-sized field, something Klauck said they are trying to get across to the parents.

“It just looks so much bigger. I was there on Saturday, and it still looks so much bigger,” said Klauck.

This is the third year Strathmore has had a peewee team. Last year it was a tentative start for the team, who by the beginning of November were not quite where they wanted to be in the standings.

The team came out on top, pulling off two playoff wins by the end of the season. This year Klauck is hoping they will do the same, but with only five returning players, he said, only time will tell.

“We’ve got a rookie team, and it’s going to take us a few weeks to get going but, I think once we get a game under our belt it’ll be okay,” said Klauck.

If the team makes it to the provin-cial finals they will be able to play on their home turf, which is a goal Klauck said they have set for them-selves this season.

Nearly two dozen 15-20 year old hockey players began their 2011-2012 season when they attended the Wheat-land Kings Conditioning Camp Aug. 28-30 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

The four-on-four camp is designed to get the players ready for the upcom-ing Junior Selection Camp, Sept. 2-4, before the annual Black & Gold game Sept. 5 (1:30 p.m.).

“It’s a sort of a way to get guys conditioned without running them through a whole bunch of drills,” said head coach and general manager Doug Murphy. “You can get guys skat-ing harder when they’re having fun and being a little competitive, rather than when you’re running drills over and over. There is enough of that dur-ing the season.”

According to Murphy, the camp is strictly for conditioning purposes, but some players can definitely catch the eye of the coaching staff with a solid performance.

“There are some guys that stand out and we’ll talk to them,” said the coach of the camp. “It’s more just to get ev-erybody back into shape and ready to go for Friday. Some of the guys gradu-ated school and have gone to work for the summer and are working full-time, so they haven’t trained like they may have in other years.”

“After the first session, the thing that stood out is how bad of shape every-one was in,” joked Murphy. “(By the end) of the camp, it should look how it should look.”

With the player selection camp start-ing Sept. 2, Murphy is optimistic of this 2011-2012 squad. He believes the team is built with speed and has a strong

nucleus of defence and goaltending. He hopes to find some players who can put the puck in the net during the main camp to supplement his forward ranks.

“(I hope) we can build on what we had last year,” said Murphy. “This year the schedule is a little more intense and only the top four teams in each division make the playoffs, so every game is an important game.

“I think we’re kind of going in with expectations that we will be in they playoffs … hopefully be battling for home ice advantage.”

The Kings will hit the ice every night from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. (Friday-Sun-day), before taking the top 30 players to the Black & Gold game.

The team will open the regular sea-son on Sept. 23 in Didsbury before hosting Coaldale in their home opener the following night.

Kings conditioning camp begins

The Wheatland Kings hosted their annual condi-tioning camp Aug. 28-30 at the Strathmore Family Centre, in advance of their main camp, which begins on Sept. 2.

Strathmore Minor Hockey, SMH, held their annual Girls Hockey night on Aug. 25. It was open to girls of all ages and skills levels, beginning at 7 p.m.

“What Strathmore Minor Hockey is doing with girls night is to just give some girls the opportunity to try hockey before they register to see if they want to join up,” said Fern Pagenkopf, one of the female hockey di-rectors.

She said they give them they opportunity because sometimes girls are a little more tentative about register-ing and SMH wants to give them an opportunity to give it a try with no obligations before registering

They had to have minimal equipment, helmet, gloves sticks and skates

“We just provide some basic instruction on what they can expect at a regular hockey practice,” said Pagenkopf.

This year there wasn’t a spring girl’s night, though Pa-genkopf said they try to hold them twice a year, provid-ing the opportunity at both the beginning and end of the season.

“There’s been girls that have played in the main stream program switching to the female program, there’s been girls in ringette that have come over to play hockey and there’s girls that decided they just want to play hockey, and its just an opportunity for them to do it without be-ing intimidated by the boys,” said Pagenkopf.

In Strathmore there is a peewee, bantam and midget female team. Registration wrapped up at REVS on Sept. 1 but SMH will still take registrations after that date. More information about SMH and any of their programs can be found at www.smhockey.com.

Strathmore resident and horse show jumper Tamie Phil-lips recently competed in the Rocky Mountain Grand Prix on Aug. 27. She may not have taken home the $50,000 prize, but was still happy to see her name in both second and third place with her two horses.

“It was really fun, both of my horses did really well. My old partner Lucas was the one that was second just by three tenths of a second, so that was pretty good,” said Phillips.

“For both of the horses to do that well, and be that con-sistent was fantastic, it’s a really nice way to end the sum-mer. It was extremely exciting because I went first in the jump off with my horse, and there were 11 other competi-tors to follow. It was the second to last competitor that just ended up sneaking in under my time, so it was very excit-ing, it was a great class.”

Eric Martin and his horse Kumano from Oakbank, Mani-toba were the ones who took home first place. This year Phillips was named the Western Canadian Champion of the Jump Canada Talent Squad Series. At the Rocky Moun-tain Classic there was a talent squad who was scouting the team, and they chose Phillips to win the Western Division of the squad this year.

“It really recognizes sort of the success that I’ve had basi-cally over the entire season, so I’ve been really consistent and that consistency has paid off and won the western division of the talent squad so that was great,” said Phillips.

“What that does is, it means that we become, or whom-ever wins it becomes a carded athlete for sport Canada.”

These days Phillips is mostly focusing on competition

Successful jumping weekend

and said she might put her name in to see if she can go to Buenos Aires to take part in the Nations Cup competi-tion. She may also head to Las Vegas and California for the fall and compete in some of the world cup qualifiers. She said her competitive future is a little bit up in the air at the moment but there are suddenly a lot of opportunities out there. For now, though, Phillips said she will likely take some time for herself and her horses after having such an intense season, and regroup in the fall.

Tamie Phillips, and her horse, Lerche 37, were named the Western Cana-dian Champion of the Jump Canada Talent Squad Series. Presenting are Karen Hendry-Ouellette, left, manager of Jumping, equine Canada and Terrance millar, right, chef d’equipe of the Canadian Show Jumping Team. Both Karen of Ottawa and Terrance of Toronto flew out to Calgary specifi-cally for this event.

Shick , William Murray

William Murray Shick lost his battle with cancer on August 16, 2011 with his

family by his side. He was one month shy of his 75th birthday. Murray was born on September 11, 1936 in Swift Current, SK where he grew up, got married and started a family. After several moves, the family settled in Stettler, AB where Murray started his own oilfield services business. After 20 years there, Murray and Kay moved to the Calgary area to be near their children and grandchildren. Murray enjoyed nearly 20 years here in the sign and decal business. He and Kay were active members of the Rocky Mountain Good Sams RV Club, where they enjoyed meeting new friends. Murray was a generous supporter of the Langdon community groups, especially the Langdon Youth Council. Above all, family was cherished by Murray – he

Obituariesloved spending time with his grandchildren. Murray was also an avid Edmonton Oilers fan and although he moved from Saskatchewan in 1967, you can’t take the Roughrider out of the boy. He remained loyal to his Riders through thick and thin.Murray leaves to grieve, his loving wife Kay, of 54 years. Also his daughters Terri Finnegan and Brenda (Rod) Cheresnuik and his four grandchildren Jennifer, Kimberly, Michael and Sydney. He also leaves behind his sisters Jean, Myrna and Marjorie, his brother Lyle and their families.Special thank you to the compassionate nursing staff at the Strathmore Hospital and to palliative care nurse Marie Webb.In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation(www.albertacancer.ca).
