August 6, 2008 Truck vs. School Bus On our regular monthly training night, the AVFD and Ashland’s MECCA crew were dispatched to a scene we all hope never happens. The scene was set up with a city truck, driven by Ron Cave, which had hit the rear end of an A-C Central School bus - approximately 20 students on board. With smoke, fuel leaking and multiple injuries, a night of training was set in place. Injuries included: broken arms and legs, back and head
injuries. Many of the students had to be stabilized and re-moved from the bus by backboard to awaiting more personal-ized care. We haven’t been through a mass casualty accident since the tornado hit our town. With new members being added to both departments, it was time to retrain. After approximately 2 hours at the crash site we spent another hour at the fire sta-tion critiquing what had just happened. As volunteers, and parents of children riding busses, we hope to never have to do this for real. But, if there ever is a time, we will be better trained for the situation. Thanks again to Ron Cave, Keith Gregory, Larry Cave, and especially to all the students who volunteered for our training.

A GREAT IDEA – AND YOU CAN
HELP GET IT STARTED!!! Many of know friends and relatives who have moved
out of Ashland to be closer to doctors, relatives, shopping, etc. With the rising cost of fuel, we will see
this happening even more. It is not just disabled or older folks, but all of us who are affected.
Cass County leaders are aware of grants which are available from the state and federal governments to create a transportation system. Again, this would be
usable by everyone - from young people with no ve-hicle who need to go shopping or to appointments, to elderly who no longer drive. The next meeting of the county transportation group
will be Thursday September 25th at 6:30pm.
The meeting place is to be announced. __________________________________________

ASHLAND U-HELP Any student may apply for up to $500 loan with an interest rate of 3%. Applications are available at the State Bank of Ashland. ONE MINUTE EACH NIGHT We have never been more desperate than now for God to heal our land. During WWII, a group was organized who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace. This had an amazing effect. There is now a group organizing the same thing here in America. United States needs prayer now more than ever!!! If you would like to participate: each evening at 8:00 PM Central time, stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, for peace in the world, the up-coming election, that the Bible will remain the basis for the laws governing our land and that Christianity will grow in the U.S. Most people know the power of prayer. We here in Ashland do!! Our prayers are the most pow-erful asset we have. Pass this on to anyone you think will want to join us. May God Bless You!!! UNITED METHODIST WOMEN HOLD ANNUAL FALL SOUP LUNCHEON The last Saturday in October represents a SPECIAL DAY. October 25 is the date for the UMW Fall Soup Luncheon. Of course, there will also be a White Elephant sale as well as “Bread for the World” sale. There will be several varieties of soup, sandwiches and yummy homemade desserts. You remember how delicious it is, so mark your calendar so you won’t forget. Time will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and cost will be $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for kids aged 5 through 12 and age 4 under will be served free!! OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY,,, goes out to the McVay Family for the recent loss of their daughter, Olivia, who was killed in a car accident. The McVays were the former owners of the Crock Pot restaurant in Ashland, who moved to Dalton City. Our hearts and prayers are with their entire family during this difficult time.
Please join us on our annual shopping trip. We will be taking the big bus to Osage Beach, MO to spend the
night and shop at the Osage Beach Premium Outlets. Tuesday evening we’ll enjoy a dinner cruise on the Celebration and then enjoy walking around Dog Patch, which was the original part of the Ozarks.
Price for this trip is $190 (Double Occupancy) which
includes transportation, one night stay and a dinner cruise. Celebrate being 50 or over by inquiring about our new First Gold Club Travel Group.
Join us Saturday, October 4 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at State Bank of Ashland to hear details about upcom-ing trips. For further details, contact Linda Klauber at 476-3325 or Activity & Tour Co-Director, Nance Bryant at 476-3508.
