Rules – they’re everywhere and apply to everything we do in life. We had rules at home growing up and rules in school, rules in our careers, and driving rules on the road. Rules are there for a reason, and although we may not like them, they are necessary.

Sun City Anthem has rules that apply to all homeowners as well. Your CC&Rs, By-Laws and Design Guidelines contain rules that apply to what you may do to the exterior of your home, how the Association is run, and who is responsible for what parts of the property. We also have Rules, Regulations and Policies that govern the day to day operation of the Association and the community centers.

An important rule in maintaining the use of the community centers for residents and their guests is the rule that requires each homeowner to carry their membership card with them when they enter the buildings. This is to be sure that everyone enjoying the centers actually has a right to do so. Sometimes residents have asked staff to look them up in the computer when they have forgotten their card. Staff is not able to look up each resident in the computer as that would cause a large delay in processing entrance to fitness areas, classes, etc. Additionally, when random checks are done in the gallery, there is no way to look that person up. Some residents have even made multiple copies of their membership card so they can have one in each bag they might bring to the center. On the surface, one might think that this would not be a problem; however, counterfeit cards can be altered to contain the picture of someone who is not a resident, allowing unauthorized individuals to use your facilities. These cards are confiscated by the monitors when presented.

Other rules that seem to be an issue at Sun City Anthem include showering before entering the pool. This rule is a Health District requirement, and is in place to be sure that the pools and spas remain sanitary. Please be sure to shower off in the locker room or in the outdoor shower before entering the pools or spas.

Our monitors are the frontline staff that is required to enforce most of the rules. These staff members are tasked with making sure that everyone follows the rules approved by the Board of Directors. They are not trying to be difficult or lessen your enjoyment of the facilities, so please understand their position and treat them with respect. Remember, most of them are residents of Sun City Anthem as well, and may be

your neighbor.

About Your Association

When I moved into this age-restricted community I had no clue about Home Owner Associations (HOA). Of course, from friends and co-workers, I had heard hor-ror stories about how restrictive they could be. The CC&Rs reminded me of a childhood game where we stood at attention and asked “Mother may I?” As a resident I eventually learned that HOAs are much more than laws, rules and regulations. HOAs are actually a living, breathing entity, and they have a purpose that is beneficial to its residents.

We move into a community and we find the streets are clean, the common-use buildings are in good repair, the landscaping is lush, and there are plenty of recre-ational activities. Maybe we don’t give much thought to what makes all that happen. Except we know we are paying for it through our association fees. But out there – making it all happen – is the Home Owners Association. It is made up of the people who live in the community. The board of directors who oversee the HOA live in the community and are elected by their fellow residents.

Over the course of time, as a member of the nation-al organization Community Association Institute, I learned something remarkable about HOAs. The HOA board of directors has the responsibility and fiduciary obligation to MAINTAIN…PROTECT…ENHANCE the value of the HOA’s assets – the property value of the community’s home owners.

HOAs are private corporations. They do not operate for profit. HOAs are prevalent because it costs less for cities and counties to provide these communities with services. There are 300,000+ HOAs across the United States; 3,000+ of these are in Clark County. Without HOAs communities would be managed by their local city government. This very likely would mean the com-munities would not be able to create their own unique life style.

When first confronted with what appeared to be the HOA’s mantra – MAINTAIN, PROTECT, ENHANCE – I thought that is much too simple. And it is. These words have a much broader impact on home owners.

First, these words are an integral part of the fiducia-ry obligation of a HOA’s board of directors: (a) to oversee cost savings in legal and financial budget line items…in order to ENHANCE property values for all residents; (b) to operate the association and enforce the governing documents…in order to PROTECT property values and MAINTAIN the property.

Second, maintaining, protecting and enhancing also relate to building a sense of community. A place in which everybody feels comfortable living there. So there are questions to be explored individually: Is what I am doing going to hurt my neighbors from sell-ing their houses? Is my HOA maintaining, protecting and enhancing our property values and what can I do to help?

Third, maintaining, protecting and enhancing encom-passes building the social and civic well being of the community. To accomplish this requires leadership; a sense of civic pride and shared responsibilities in all residents; resolving situations that would create nega-tive media attention.

Finally, “Mother may I?” Rules are important to HOAs because they provide certainty and order; PRO-TECT the freedom and safety of residents; MAINTAIN the commonly owned resources; ENHANCE residents’ property values by restricting the behavior of those who might reduce the worth of the property.

September and my year as Chairperson is closing fast so I would like to discuss the bane of our community - Walls and Fences. Sadly there are more misunderstandings regarding walls and fences than almost anything else. This month we will address Fences and next month Walls. Only “wrought iron “ is permitted for perimeter fences and gates and is to be colored in Victorian Garnet or, as some say, Anthem Brown. If perforated screening is used for privacy, it must be attached to the inside of the installing homeowner. A maximum height of 6 feet is allowed subject to required setbacks and adjoining homeowner’s approval. Courtyards with gates and wrought iron are restricted to a total height of 4 feet and must be painted the same color as the front door, one of the house colors or Victorian Garnet. As can be seen from just the complexity relating to basic rules for fences, the need for reading and understanding the guidelines and consulting the ARC is essential.

All Finance Committee meetings are open to the public. We encourage residents to attend these meetings to understand more about the financial workings of our community.

LifestyleRoy Montambeau, ChairpersonPhone 896-0095 Email: [email protected]

The Lifestyle Committee meets the first Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m. for a workshop. The agenda for the coming regular meeting is discussed and audience participation is encouraged. The workshop provides a chance for the Committee and Association members to be aware of an agenda item and gain a sense of the issues involved. No votes are taken on topics. However, action is commonly taken on requests for room usage to prevent delays.

On Friday of the following week at 9:00 a.m., the regular meeting is held and the Committee takes action.

The Property and Grounds Committee is currently considering technology and design ideas to monitor non-association visitors to our facilities. Completion of this process will allow the Lifestyle Committee to complete its recommended policies regarding guests and other non-association people using our facilities. The policies rest heavily on the ability to identify non-members.

Meetings are held in the Penn room.

The committee reviewed and modified the planned presentation for a BOD workshop to be held August 20th.

Properties and GroundsTuesday, Sept. 1 at 10:00 a.m., Anthem CenterLinda Krivec – ChairmanE-Mail: [email protected]

P & G supports the Board of Directors in the management and development of our common amenities. We meet the first Tuesdays of the month at 10:00 a.m., and residents are always welcome to attend, and to offer comments on our Agenda items, or other concerns.

We are pleased to announce the election of Carol Siebel as our Vice-Chair. Carol has been on the committee since September of 2006; and served as the Chair of the Safety and Security Task Force, which recently offered recommendations to the Board for enhanced security measures in our Centers. Carol is part of a terrific team of volunteers who spend many hours working on behalf of all of our interests in maintaining and enhancing our property. Other team members are Marge Pierzchala, Celeste Bove, Gary Fox and Stan Lenci. When you see them around, please give them a thank you for all their efforts!

At our August meeting, we reviewed several items, including shade cover for the bocce courts; a new phone system to link our Centers (including the soon to open Liberty Center); and a contract to hire an architect to design shaded area for the tennis courts. (I can’t tell you if they actually got approved by the Board because I am writing this in advance to meet the publication deadline!)

I told you last month that I wanted to use this column to answer some FAQs. Well, the most frequent of FAQs is always something about landscaping around the Loop road. The fact is that Sun City does not own or control most areas on the Loop. They are controlled by the Anthem Council, a consortium of all the communities in the Master Plan, which is still controlled by Pulte. Someday soon we will have more of a voice on the Council as we transition to homeowner control. Other areas, including along the Loop road running adjacent to the golf course, and the corner of Alexandria right below Anthem Center, are controlled by the golf course, and we cannot enhance or improve the maintenance of those areas, unfortunately. Send me any other questions you have, and I will try to get you the answers. See you around our grounds!

In light of some recent incidents, I felt this would be a great time to remind all our residents of an important service that your Security Patrol provides for your protection.

The Security Patrol maintains a database of resident phone numbers listed by street address. These numbers are kept in a notebook that is carried in each of our patrol cars during each shift. This file allows our drivers to contact a homeowner anytime there’s an emergency observed at a home. The emergency could be an outside water leak, or as happened several times during the past month, water coming out from under the garage door. A result of a broken water heater. We’ve also had two leaks on rooftop solar heating units, resulting in lots of water running off the roofs and flooding the back yards.

In each of the above mentioned incidents, there was too much elapsed time due to the fact that we could not contact the homeowner. If we notice it after hours or on a weekend, and the resident is not in our Reverse Directory, we have to wait until Monday when the office is open to have them contact the resident. As you can see, it is imperative that we have contact numbers for all our SCA residents.

In conclusion, our Reverse Directory is proprietary information and not ever shared with anyone outside of the Security Patrol. Additionally, all of our members are bound by a confidentiality clause in their membership file.

In an emergency, it could take three days or longer for professional help to get to you. You may have to ad-minister medical care to yourself, your family, neigh-bors, etc. You may not be able to get first aid or medical supplies as stores may be closed, damaged or empty.• It is important to have a basic knowledge of First Aid.• It is important to have First Aid Supplies in your home. • If you or family members have any special medical needs as prescription drugs or special equipment, get an extra supply of these for an emergency.• Each person should fill out a Personal Medical Infor-mation Sheet.• Each person should keep their immunizations current.• Each family (person) should compile an Emergency Medical Contact List.

HAVE A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF FIRST AID

1. You could be dealing with heart attacks, bleeding, broken bones, shock, burns, and infection control is-sues in an emergency.2. Knowing First Aid allows you to provide effective care to an injured person until professional help is available.3. It could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.4. Get a basic First Aid Book and keep it with your Medical Supplies. (Boy Scout First Aid Merit Badge Manual is good and inexpensive).5. Take classes on First Aid and CPR. (Local hospitals and city adult education programs usually offer class-es). CPR class is offered by Meg Poulson, 614-5873 at SCA Fitness Center.6. Several family members should be trained in Basic First Aid and CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation).

FILL OUT A PERSONAL MEDICAL INFORMATION SHEET*

1. This is a brief medical history that gives emergency personnel vital information on your medical condition, prescription drugs, and any allergies you have. It is es-pecially important if you live alone.2. Put a copy of this medical sheet in your 72 Hour Kit.3. Put a copy of this medical sheet in a Ziploc bag or Medical Vial and label it “Important Medical Infor-mation”.

4. Place this bag (or Vial) in an easily seen spot in your refrigerator (refrigerator is fire and waterproof).5. Put a note on the outside of your refrigerator indicat-ing that your medical information is inside.6. In an emergency, trained personnel know to check the refrigerator for medical information.7. Put a note on your medicine cabinet to alert emer-gency personnel of your special needs and medica-tion.8. If needed, get a “Medic Alert” bracelet or necklace that lists your medical condition and always wear it.* A “Medical Vial” with a Personal Medical Informa-tion Sheet & Magnetic Red Cross is available from the receptionist at the Anthem Center Front Desk.

KEEP YOUR IMMUNIZATIONS CURRENT

1. Your immunizations should be up to date (both chil-dren and adults). Check with your doctor on what you need.2. It is recommended that everyone have a Tetanus Booster every 10 years.3. A yearly Flu Shot is also recommended.4. Pneumonia and Shingles vaccinations are recom-mended for adults 65 years old and older.5. Have a current record (list) of your immunizations (type and date). Put a copy in your 72 Hour Kit and on your Personal Medical Information Sheet.

COMPILE AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL CONTACT LIST

1. This list should have the names and phone numbers of people that may need to be contacted in an emer-gency.2. Laminate or seal it in a Ziploc bag. Post a copy where it can easily be seen by emergency personnel.3. Put a copy in your 72 Hour Kit and First Aid Kit.4. Update the list as needed to keep the information current.

A Medical Vial and Emergency Flags (with instructions) will be available at the Reception Desk at the SCA Anthem Center from August 1, 2009 on. They are FREE so “pick up a set” - one per home.

Fitness CornerBy Meg Poulson GETTING OLD

Local injuries, like bursitis, are often dismissed as “just getting old, I guess.” It is true that more older people than younger people have these problems, and they do have something to do with the way our bodies’ age.

But they do not need to happen. These problems are sometimes due to abuse of the body part. Much more frequently, however, they are due to the lack of use. In our society, as you get older you are expected to be less active. And then you get the kinds of health problems that happen to inactive people of all ages.

So you need to be ACTIVE. If your muscles are trim and in good tone, your heart and lungs are conditioned, your body weight is normal and constant at that level, and you have a regular exercise program, you will have fewer of these problems, and your body will not grow old as rapidly. These simple measures can slow down the aging process by as much as ten years. These measures will keep calcium in the bones, your bursae free and well lubricated, your ten-dons firm and strong, and your joint cartilage well nourished.

You can control a lot of the aging of your body. The worst mistake you can make is to consider bursitis or another local problem to be a signal to slow down. It is a signal to speed up, because your body is drifting out of condition.

If you have questions or need help with your fitness goals; contact a personal trainer, the St. Rose Wellness Center, or take a group exercise class. Let a professional safely assist you.

ENFORCEMENTEnforcement Department

MISCELLANEouS INFoRMATIoN:

Christine Wikoff, Enforcement Manager

Bird feeding devices are NOT prohibited. However, the feeding of birds or other wildlife may be the cause of a mess or nuisance for others because it attracts animals such as rats and rabbits and undesirable birds to their lot. If/when a homeowner submits a written complaint alleging that the bird or animal feeding is causing a nuisance and/or a mess on their lot, then that action that is causing a nuisance and annoyance on another lot may be interpreted to be a violation of C&R 3.6 (h).

Noise complaints must be documented and verified in writing by the complainant and two other households who are bothered by the noise. Documentation packets and forms for declarations are available at the Enforcement Department Office in Anthem Center.

If you are comfortable with familiarizing yourself with your neighbors and exchanging phone numbers then these types if issues could be easily resolved through polite discussions. The Association does not “enforce” or regulate these items as they are not part of the Governing Document requirements. Some examples of “Neighbor to Neighbor” issues are:

• Neighbor above you in back has a leak or is “over watering” and the wall on the back of your property is becoming covered with white stains or may be damaged.

• Neighbor has trees or shrubs that are not blocking any part of a sidewalk but you believe they should be trimmed especially where they encroach on your property.

• Neighbor has a plant or tree that blocks your vision when backing out of the driveway.

• Your neighbor has a tree that is blocking the street sign or stop sign. Contact City of Henderson if you cannot work this out with the neighbor. The web site has a form you can fill out to describe the problem.

• Neighbor is gone and you notice a leak. Contact the Water District. You may also contact the Association Membership Services desk at 614-5817 and they will try to contact the owner if a current phone number is available. However, we cannot guarantee we will be able to reach the owner so the Henderson Water District is probably the best bet for getting this resolved.

The following are police matters so please contact the Henderson Police Department: Suspected theft, violence, gun discharge, trespassing, verbal abuse, threats, excessive noise after ten in the evening, fire threat, reckless driving, vandalism, animal attacks, and public intoxication.

On street parking issues belong to the City of Henderson Police Department, Traffic Division (267-5099 or 267-4795). They also have a web site where you can “contact” someone and report your concern. Do not contact the Association regarding on street parking unless you live in the gated Community of Pinnacle. Legislation passed several years ago prohibited HOA’s from maintaining any rules regarding street parking. Therefore, any provisions that were formerly being enforced regarding on street parking can no longer be enforced except in Pinnacle Village.

MaKE a DIFFERENCE BY VOLUNTEERINg aT HINMaN ELEMENTaRY SCHOOL Sun City Anthem residents are invited to volunteer at Hinman Elementary School during the 2009-10 school year. Many of the previous volunteers will be returning to work with the students and staff, but more volunteers are needed to provide valuable assistance and support. Anyone considering helping students in kindergarten through fifth grade should plan to attend an orientation meeting on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. in the Concord Room to find out if this is something you might like to do. Volunteers do not need to be former teachers, they just need to have a desire to make a valuable contribution to the success of the students at Hinman School.

September – Time to set Irrigation Clocks

FaCILITIESFacilities/Landscaping

As of September 1, we will be on the SNWA mandatory water schedule for fall. All residential and commercial irrigation clocks need to be set to water only three days a week. For all of us in Anthem, our watering days are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Failure to adhere to this schedule could result in a water-waste fee or citation from SNWA. This is a good month for pruning and cleaning out dead wood in existing landscape and checking for signs of and treating insect damage and/or fungus. Since the ground is still warm it is also a good time to plant new trees and shrubs as there is adequate time to establish new root systems before the Winter chill sets in,.

Here in our Community we are still seeing some more evidence of problems from last winter’s storm. In the spring we had replaced quite a bit of damaged landscape, but as we continued through the summer there were additional trees

and shrubs that started to decline and did not make it through the heat. Therefore, you may still see new landscaping being set during September.

As most of our duplex homeowners know, I’ve been busy walking and monitoring your landscaping issues and the homes that are being painted this year. Most of you have had your damaged and missing landscape replaced and if new landscape issues surface, we’ll handle accordingly. Because your trees have matured so much, we are having problems with grass not getting enough sun and roots surfacing from the Fan-tex Ash Trees originally planted in lawn areas by the developer. We are working on solutions for this ever growing problem.

The duplex painting project took longer than we expected and we do appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by our duplex homeowners. In order to provide you with the best paint job possible, it was necessary to call off the paint crews on the many windy and rainy days we had this Summer, therefore the

delays. The newly painted homes look great due to good painting and the fact that we worked with the painter to restore the faded colors to the color used when the homes were originally built.

Featured photo is a perennial flower called the Aster, which is the birth flower for the month of September. This beautiful flower comes in pink, red, white, lilac and mauve. The tradition of giving specific flowers for a person’s birth month dates back to Victorian times. During these times, giving someone an Aster held a special secret message which was “take care of yourself for me.”

If from time-to-time you have questions, comments or concerns regarding any of our properties, please don’t hesitate to contact me. We always welcome your calls and emails. [email protected] or (702)614-5814. Thank you,

BOCCE

League Play: As the heat of summer fades into memory our thoughts turn to bocce. The fall 2009 season is upon us and with it lays the challenges of old rivalries and new contenders. Your bocce board invites you to forget the fun of watching your utility meter spin endlessly, get outdoors and bask in the cool bocce season. Remember if you are a green new player or rusty old player you can check out the balls at the fitness center and practice until you are skilled. The season kicks off the week of September 14th and we wish everyone good luck, good fun and good natured competition.

Captains’ Meeting: Mark your calendars for the Captains’ meeting scheduled for Thursday, September

10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Anthem Center. The meeting is mandatory for all captains or their designees. This meeting will arm you with all the information you need to be well informed this season. Avoid the confusion and perplexion that occurs when well intentioned players are uninformed. We encourage all represent-atives to stay for the entire meeting and learn of the changes in rules and policies. In addition, you can meet the board and greet old friends, and adversaries.

Anthems Got Talent: The Bocce Board is searching for new candidates to serve on the 2010 board. If you have a little time and the enthusiasm, get involved and speak to a member or attend a meeting. You will work with a fun group of people and have the satisfaction of enhancing the club.

Website: The bocce website www.scbocce.com is the best source of information, news and current standings thanks to our Webmaster Al Mimran. Make it a favorite place and save time and energy.

BOOK

Have you ever wondered who takes care of the Sun City Anthem Library in the Independence Center? The members of the SCA Book Club volunteer to shelve the books that are donated by residents. The library operates on the honor system and hundreds of books come in an out each day. We have a paperback and hardback section along with puzzles and some videos. We are

NOT a reference library. The Book Club meets on the third Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the Penn Room at the Independence Center.

Dues are $2 for the year.

Our selection for September is “Midwives” by Chris Bohjalian. In an isolated farmhouse in Vermont, seasoned midwife, Sibyl Danforth, is forced to make a life and death decision where she takes desperate measures

to save the life of a baby. The birth mother dies after Sibyl performs a cesarean section on the woman she believes has died of a stroke during a long and a painful labor. Sibyl’s subsequent trial is hauntingly told by her fourteen year old daughter, Connie. Through Connie’s eyes we witness the tragic effects of the mother’s death and Sybil’s trial. No easy answers are provided for the reader in this courtroom thriller.

FINANCIAL

Ensuring a Future for Southern Nevada

The Sun City Anthem Financial Club, on Sept.9, 7:00 p.m. in the Delaware Room, will present Mrs. Patricia Mulroy.

Pat Mulroy oversees the operations of the Southern Nevada Water Authority and the Las Vegas Valley Water District. The Water Authority is responsible for acquiring, treating and delivering water to local agencies that collectively serve 2 million residents and 40 million annual visitors.

The topic is ensuring a future for Southern Nevada. This is her second timely appearance before our residents within the past four years. The value of your real estate will be affected by Mrs. Mulroy’s plans and actions.

This visionary lady and her fight for water will be of prime importance to your beneficiaries. In the next six years, either nature has to change its patterns, or the lack of water lowers your house values drastically.

All residents are invited and encouraged to attend this important meeting.

To join us as a new member, or renew membership (it’s only $5 per year), just come to a meeting. The Financial Club’s web site at http://www.anthemfc.com/ has a wealth of information on future speakers, as well as archived presentations.

MEN’S GOLF

The Men’s Golf would like to offer condolences to the family of Bob Johnson. Bob, who was president of our Men’s Club 2004-2006 passed away on June 19th. He was instrumental in starting the Ryder Cup competition against Siena Men’s Golf Club. A tree has been planted behind the 18th green on Lexington, in Bob’s memory. He will be dearly missed.

We were honored to have Sue May speak at our July meeting. Sue is a U.S. Open rules official, a member of the USGA Senior Women’s committee, and head rules director for the Butch Harmon Vegas Tour. She answered many questions on rules of golf. As a result, the Men’s Club will be playing the desert as “Through the Green”, except where marked otherwise. Also, new “Local Rules” have been posted for our club.

We are now starting to have a few Men’s Day events on Sundays. For a complete schedule, and other news about our club, check out our website at www.mensrevere.org We welcome any new member to join our club. Results of our Tee Party will be in the October Spirit.

OPERA Thursday, September 10. 7:00 p.m., Freedom Hall, Independence Center. This month we are showing “Carmen” by George Bizet, directed by Francesco Rosi. All the passion and spectacle of Bizet’s Carmen comes to life in this dazzling screen opera starring Placido Domingo and Julia Migenes-Johnson. In 19th century Seville, the lusty, tempestuous Carmen (Migenes-Johnson) seduces a naive Army corporal, Don Jose (Domingo), newly assigned to the village fortress. Jose abandons his career, his fiancée and even his dying mother for the love of this sultry gypsy. But soon she spurns him in favor of a toreador, Escamillo (Ruggero Raimondi). Crazed with jealousy, Jose begs Carmen to return to him, but her taunting declaration of independence results in tragedy. Shot entirely on location in Andalusian Spain, Bizet’s Carmen has been hailed as the definitive version of this classic opera. 155 minutes. English subtitles. All members and guests are invited.

PAN

Mondays, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.& Saturday, 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

If you like having fun, making new friends and enjoy a good fast paced and exciting game of cards, “Pan”, is for you! A very popular rummy-style game in the Western part of the United States and Florida.

We have been working on something very interesting; here’s the program. Once a month, similar to the poker club we will have mini tournaments. On the last Saturday of the month, there will be no more than 24 players who will participate in this tournament. That’s eight players per table, or the possibility of only seven per table (21 players.) The entry fee will be $10.00 and there will be four money places. Whoever has the most chips at the end of the second hour will become the winners. The time will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Two hours). Anyone that does not want to play in this tournament will still be able to play at club times, which starts at 12:30.p.m. All monies that are collected for the entry fee will be paid out. If you are interested in this activity, please contact Lynda Kleinman, at 685-9511 or Rita Berman at 617-1551, Gloria Matusow at 454-5011 or Sandy Katz, at 617-8661. We will collect the entry fee in cash only, and need to know five days prior to the participation date. We will not be serving any food, all noshes to be brought by the players. I think this is a terrific idea and gives us another dimension for our club.

We’d love to have you join in the fun! If you have any questions about lessons, please call Rita Berman, President at 617-1551 or Fay Schoenfeld at 227-9908. Any questions about membership, please contact Carol Franklin, Communications Chair at [email protected].

PET

Pet Club Event: The September event will be a trip out to the Shiloh Horse Rescue Ranch near Sandy Valley. Please see the website below for details.

Pet of the Month: Jan Bosco received the following e-mail from Connie at the Nevada SPCA NO-KILL animal sanctuary: “Jan, would you and Joe be willing to foster Nettie, a 2-year old female lab mix, who is dangerously thin even with our attempts to constantly feed her? All the blood work came back normal. We think getting her into a foster home will help her gain weight and feel better. Even if you could foster her for as little as five days, we would appreciate it.” Nettie had been in a KILL shelter, and the NSPCA rescued her and brought her to their sanctuary; all efforts to get her to eat had failed. Jan and her husband, Joe, had never fostered before, but this dog needed their help. Jan picked her up that day, and she hasn’t stopped eating since. Nettie has gained over 8 pounds in 3 ½ weeks. Jan says, “she is a wonderful, sweet natured, active dog, who loves playing with her rope toys and wants to be near us at all times. Nettie was so stressed and afraid in a shelter environment that she couldn’t eat, and to see her come alive has been wonderful. Nettie may have found a permanent home, as we can’t think of not having her with us. There are so many animals needing a foster home for short term recovery, especially the babies – puppies and kittens. For anyone thinking of fostering an animal, we highly recommend it.”

Found Animals: The SCA Pet Club has purchased a micro-chip reader to assist in re-homing lost animals. As a community service, we have presented it to the Security Office. If residents find a lost animal, please take it to the Security Office, next to the bocce ball courts, to have it scanned. You can also contact Henderson Animal Control , 702-267-4970, or any local veterinary clinic to determine if the animal has been micro-chipped.

The Pet Club is open to all Sun City Anthem residents. Our members have dogs, cats, birds, turtles, etc. Some of our members don’t have a pet of their own, but love animals and enjoy our informative and fun meetings. For information, please contact President Shelly McCann at 614-4895 and visit the Pet Club web site at www.siteskins.com/scanthempetclub for upcoming events.

SEWING AND QuILTING

We are finally coming out of the heat of the summertime and are able to look forward to enjoying the beautiful autumn temps. What a perfect time to begin a new hobby or to return to one that you have put aside to enjoy the outdoors and summertime fun. With the holidays just around the corner, we are busy preparing for all of the fairs and events that are held here in Anthem.

Our club meets every Thursday afternoon to work on items that will be for sale in our window or at the various craft fairs held here in the community. You will find a vast array of merchandise that is sure to fit the bill for your early holiday shopping. Please stop by the room and check us out. There is also a full schedule of classes and activities and loads of helpful information on our website, www.scasaq.org. Here you will learn about our special interest groups for quilting, crocheting, knitting, garment sewing, doll clothes construction, and machine embroidery.

The Sewing and Quilting Club prides itself on donating to various local charities, helping to support at-risk schools, and giving their time and talents to worthwhile causes. One such cause is ConKerr Cancer, LV chapter, which is brand new to the area. Our group, headed up by member Natalie Fleischer, has been making pillowcases which are given to children and young adults who are hospitalized for life-threatening diseases or who are receiving cancer treatments. Pictured are three of our club’s members, Natalie Fleischer, Muffy Harris, and Peggie Riccio, as they present the first delivery of pillowcases to the ladies of the Pediatric ICU at St. Rose Hospital here in Henderson. The effort could not have succeeded without the help of the members of the Sewing and Quilting Club. Many thanks to all who helped out and we look forward to your help in the future. Congratulations, ladies!

Here are the top 10 reasons to join us at softball each week:

10. What else do you have going at 8:00 in the morning?

9. Everyone needs a good laugh at least twice a week.

8. Only the “real” athletes in SCA play softball.

7. Those that believe #8 are still living in the past.

6. It’s fun to watch certain players try to run, catch, throw and bat.

5. We have ice packs on hand for those “sore” muscles.

4. We do have two hours of fun and lots of stories to share.

3. We haven’t been raided by the police for some time now.

2. You can see some of the greatest legs in Nevada each week.

And the number one reason is:

1. We have the best people out here that you would ever want to meet.

See you at softball this week!

WOODCHIPS

The Sun City Anthem Woodchips Woodworking Club was formed in 2003 to provide a dedicated woodworking venue within the SCA Community. The Club welcomes everyone who has an interest in working with wood and creating any wooden project from jewelry boxes, carved items, entertainment centers or turned spindles and bowls. The shop has approximately 2,000 square feet, and training sessions are conducted to qualify all club members on the safe operation and proper use of the shop’s tools and procedures before using any of the machines. Advanced and specialized training will be given as required. The Woodchips website contains complete information for all training, schedules, operational procedures, member projects and meeting minutes.

Woodchips works with the Home Owners Association and other SCA clubs, to provide assistance with their projects. The club also participates in charitable causes pertaining to woodworking. Additionally, the joy of woodworking is enhanced through various woodworking seminars, field trips and special projects.

The shop, which is located at the rear of Independence Center, is open Wednesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Membership is open to all SCA residents for only $25.00 a year. After mandatory safety training you will be on your way. Check the Woodchips website at: scawoodchips.org for information on the club. You can also contract Val Podmolik at 269-8607 for information on becoming a member.
